I relished Cooper and Johnson’s previous collaboration—the ingeniously titled Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village. If you haven’t already picked this darkly comic gem up, improve your shelves and your day by doing so. This showed off both creators’ love of classic murder mysteries and the wry way they skewered standard tropes and tricks of the genre. Their focus turns to the genre once again in another dynamite collaboration. As the title for this book suggests, this is a bit of a different detective story where the reader is placed firmly in the central role. Can you piece together the clues and crack the case?

It is such a fun and disarming idea that completely upends your expectations going in. You are pouring over these pages, looking for the smallest detail and in Cooper’s illustrations, there is plenty to discover. These are so wonderfully realised and readers with a keen eye for detail will delight in going back through and seeing exactly what you may have missed. There is a warmth and sense of heart and humour in every illustration, even when you may be confronting some pretty nasty people. Cooper’s skill brings these people to life and you can exactly picture how they may speak or move through the world from just one drawing. These illustrations are vivid, characterful and sometimes ominous—offering so much in so little space. I also relished the inclusion of detailed maps which helped give you a sense of the setting without revealing too much (and also made me envision different routes through the house for various characters).

The plotting of the book is as ferocious as you can expect from Johnson, whose Stevie Bell series remains a hallmark of the YA mystery genre. You are led down several different rabbit holes in trying to unravel this closed-circle, seemingly impossible mystery. It is beyond entertaining as you follow along and meet all of these complicated people with their own secrets held close to their chest. There is a wonderful sense of fun and playful humour that permeates the pages, poking fun at several character types and tropes that you may expect to see in the archetype of these stories. The historical setting complements that Golden Age feel, but has a distinctive spin. At once it pays homage with love and takes knowing jabs at certain beats you may be expecting it to hit. Both creators have constructed a well-plotted and fast-paced story that has plenty of layers and intricacies to it, keeping the pages flowing even as you spend time entranced by these gorgeous illustrations. It had me scribbling down notes, clues and theories—making it such an immersive and intensive reading experience. Fret not, there is a solution to be found but trying to get there yourself first is infinitely more rewarding.

I hope this kickstarts a new series or we are at least treated to more collaborations from these fiendish, twisted minds. That blend of dark humour and mystery is utterly captivating and stands out from the crowd.

As expected from Johnson, it is packed full of great characterisation, sparkling dialogue and plot twists that will keep you up until the early hours.

Hi Maureen, thank you for joining us today! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and your latest book Death at Morning House?

Between upstate New York and Canada, there is a massive river called the St. Lawrence. Along a stretch of it there is a scattering of almost two thousand islands. For some reason they decided to call it the Thousand Islands, robbing themselves of hundreds more. The water is glass-bottle green and very pure and clear. It looks like the tropics.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, this was the playground of the ultra-rich. Wealthy families bought up the islands and built mansions and even castles. They’d spend the summer yachting from door to door. Death at Morning House takes place on Ralston Island, a recently reopened manor that has been falling apart since 1932, when two of the Ralston family’s seven children died on a sunny afternoon and the house was shuttered. There were always questions about what happened that day.

In the present, the house is reopened to tourists—repaired, wallpapers reproduced, furniture removed from storage. Enter Marlowe Wexler, just a girl trying to woo another girl and who accidentally burned down a house in the process. These things happen. Marlowe is brought in from out of town to take an empty post as a tour guide. No one bothered to tell her that’s she’s filling in for a dead guy.

There have been a lot of deaths on Ralston Island. There will be more.

This is a murder mystery and a queer romance. It’s a cautionary tale as well. The stories that affect us the most are the ones we refuse to tell or share, the ones we suppress. These are the stories that can heal us if we take the time to listen to them—or could doom us if we try to push them away.

Also, it’s about the danger of scented candles. You really have to watch those.

Death at Morning House spans two timelines and two gripping mysteries. What draws you to meshing the past and the present in your mysteries?

Well, mysteries are all about unpicking things that have come before and setting them in order, working out motives, figuring out where the evil set in and why.  It’s also important to do in general—how did we get where we are? What story have we told ourselves about our own history, and what parts did we conveniently leave out?

Both plot lines are so complex with plenty of clues to uncover. What’s your plotting process like?

Organized whimsy. I’m sort of a mad clockmaker. I always start with why. I never care about how or who until I work out why. I work intensely on the mechanism of the crime. I often write up a solution document. Then I start drafting, working back and forth between these, tweaking each. And then I go into a fugue state at some point, and then the book is due in three weeks and then the screaming starts. That’s when I shine.

What was it like returning to a standalone book after spending time with Stevie Bell and co in the Truly Devious series?

I wanted to step to the side for a minute and do a classic, one-and-done mystery. Sometimes you have to move around a little. That being said, the next Stevie was also on the sketchpads next to this book while I was working.

What surprised you while writing this book?

I went to the Thousand Islands for research for the book, well after I was underway. I always try to go to the place I’m setting a book in, which means that I have driven myself up mountains in tiny cars, wandered down dark alleys in London, looking for sewer tunnels and listened for the places where the water drips. This was a particularly nice location.

The day I was scheduled to go was the great Northeast summer fire (the first, I worry, of many). The sky in New York City turned a glowing orange but was also dark, like we were in a reverse jack o’ lantern. We had most of the smoke, but the bulk was over Syracuse, which is the city I was supposed to fly into. All flights were grounded over both. It was another reminder—look at where we are and ask how we got here.

I made it there the next week. It’s such a beautiful, extraordinary place. The St. Lawrence is everything, and people go from shore to island to island through this beautiful, clear water. It glows kind of a tropical green in places. And you float along, past islands only big enough to hold one small house. You see the history of the rich of the early 20^th century—people who built themselves castles. It’s wild and incredible and I want to go back tomorrow.

I loved Marlowe as a protagonist with her passion and willingness to put her all into something, no matter the consequences. Which elements did you love writing for her and which were more challenging?

Marlowe is a romantic, which I am not. She is, however, also ridiculous, which I am. She is in love with a beautiful girl, and in her love and heartbreak, she is always ready to make the biggest possible mistakes. I respect that.

The Ralston family are somewhat unnerving from their first appearance and things only get darker as the book goes on. Were there any real life influences behind them and their case?

Many. There were a lot of historical things I could have put in (and did at points) and had to pull back because they were so grim that it would have set the whole book off balance. Phillip Ralston is a committed eugenicist, which was not only accepted at the time, but regarded as wholesome. There were eugenics tents at state fairs. I’ll just say the story of American “hero” Charles Lindberg comes up again. Once you read the book, look up what he spent his time doing after his famous flight.

At the risk of getting on my soapbox, we always need to ask ourselves who told the stories, or who picked which stories would go into the textbook, or—as we see now—who tried to take the book from the shelf. The information is out there. The stories are waiting for us. And if we don’t learn from them, it’s to our own peril.

What books have you enjoyed so far this year and are there any that you can’t wait to get your hands on?

My TBR pile is a pile of a monster. Lots of murder! And history!

If possible, can you share a little about what you are currently working on or any upcoming projects you have?

I’m going right into the next Stevie Bell mystery. And I just finished (literally) a new dossier mystery I’m making with my friend Jay Cooper. It’s called You Are the Detective: The Creeping Hand Murder. It’s a case file—a collection of documents and photographs (illustrated by Jay), and you solve the case. The solution is sealed in the back.

Finally, if you could only use five to describe Death at Morning House, what would they be?

Maureen Johnson just knows how to write the kind of stories that keep you reading until the early hours. They are incredibly well paced, with stellar characterisation and terrifyingly good twists. Many of us have fallen in love with Stevie Bell across the Truly Devious series and while we await the next thrilling instalment, Johnson has concocted something to whet your mystery loving appetite in the meantime. This is a great standalone mystery from Johnson—pivoting across two timelines to create two compelling and complex cases.

In the present day, we follow our protagonist Marlowe who is smart, driven and passionate—following her heart and her head in equal measure. I loved her sometimes sardonic sense of humour and the asides Johnson includes in her thoughts are hilarious. Marlowe is outcast within her own community after gaining a bit of a pyromaniac reputation due to an unfortunate accident. This injects a touch of humour into the narrative initially and we all recognise that drawn out teenage longing and angst. She is the type of person that puts their all into something, consequences be damned. I liked the relationship throughline in the novel, particularly because of the sapphic representation. It added some levity and hope, but also stayed messy and authentically flawed as teenage relationships often are. There are a few different dynamics to keep track of here and the sort of web that came from friendships and relationships and flirtations was enjoyable. Marlowe works as our outsider looking into this close knit group and trying to work out precisely what happened last summer.

As to be expected from Johnson, the mysteries are top class. The modern plot line is gripping and so well executed. It builds gradually, feeling that hair raise on your arms like when you know a storm is incoming. The isolated setting, like a classic Golden Age mystery, really adds to the atmosphere and the foreboding feeling in your body. I loved how it meshed the historical into the present—you have Marlowe essentially trying to solve two mysteries simultaneously. That research and unpicking at long buried secrets clashes with the more recent events and the way those are manipulated. The two collide and intersect in really interesting ways as well.

The 1920s storyline instantly has that kind of uncanny feeling to it—easy to create when you already know it will end in tragedy. There is something so off about the forced routines and the strange feeling of this entire family. You can recognise hints and clues that feed into the wider picture. Johnson just has this knack for pulling the rug from underneath you every single time. You are led on a merry dance but it all pays off in the end. With this, it helped that our 1920s perspective shifted occasionally so we saw a new angle on previously established events. All of it feels predestined because we know the ending, but we do not know the details and therefore do we truly know the ending at all?

It also adds this meta layer of exploring the impact of true crime upon a place and its community. The mysteries we are captivated by involve real people with genuine feelings and consequences for their actions. This book does a great job at encapsulating the way that ricochets throughout the community and stretches out for years beyond. We all love a good story and often the bloodier, the better. It also does a good job at exploring that tension between locals and visitors, particularly driven by a tourism around tragedy.

Death at Morning House is the YA mystery of the summer, potentially the year. Miss it at your peril.

Firstly, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview! Truly Devious is a series that has truly captured my heart and the hearts of so many other readers. Could you briefly describe the series for anyone who is not familiar with it?

Sure! Truly Devious is about Stevie Bell, a true-crime aficionado who wants to be a detective. She loves every true crime show. She’s read about all the famous cases. She’s on the biggest cold case forums. She’s got a curated mystery collection. She’s come to Ellingham Academy, which is one of America’s most prestigious and unusual schools, with the hopes of solving the 1936 kidnapping of the founder’s wife and daughter and the murder of a student. The founder’s wife, Iris, was eventually found dead, but their daughter Alice was never found at all. This is an extremely famous case, considered the crime of the century, so the idea that a high school student is going to solve it eighty years later seems absurd to many. But Stevie is determined. Shortly after her arrival, though, students start dying in the present day—and it has everything to do with what happened in 1936.

That’s where Stevie’s story begins. In Nine Liars, she’s on a new, stand-alone case. While visiting the UK, someone approaches her about the 1995 murder of two Cambridge students at a county house called Merryweather. They were visiting with their friends—all were part of their comedy sketch group called The Nine. The murders were thought to be part of a burglary gone wrong. But one of The Nine let something slip in the present day. This was no burglary.  Stevie and her friends have a week to figure out what happened with the ax in the woodshed in 1995—and also to solve a present day disappearance—all while convincing the head of their school that they are doing a week of study aboard and absolutely nothing else. Definitely not solving a cold case.

Stevie is obsessed with solving the unsolvable – particularly cold cases. What is a true crime case that you would love to solve?

That’s tough. Maybe the Jeffery MacDonald case? (Which, in the eyes of many is solved. It’s a question of really knowing if the solution was correct. I tend to think it was.)

What five words would you use to describe Nine Liars?

English manor house ax murder.

Nine Liars brings Stevie across the pond to the UK. Why did you choose this location for her next outing?

Two reasons. The first is that so many mysteries I read and loved took place in England. The second is that my husband is English, so we are an American/English household. England is our other home. I spend a lot of time here and I love it.

Theatre has been a huge part of your life and has definitely woven itself into your books. Would you ever consider adapting the series for the stage?

Probably not for the stage. Some other form, though…

Which songs would you consider to be the soundtrack for the series?

I’d like to answer this one for Nine Liars in particular, because of all the books I’ve written, this one has a soundtrack written right into the book. The cold case takes place in 1995, so there is Britpop everywhere in the story. Here’s a starter list:

It is no secret that I adore the Truly Devious series with my whole heart. The way this series has grown and adapted is brilliant, with these new stories adding so much more to our characters and their development over the series. Johnson keeps adding these new layers that enrich your reading experience, particularly in superb character work and these incredibly well-plotted mysteries.

Maureen Johnson’s work just always hits that sweet spot for me. There’s that sense of cosy crime, a familiarity and a comfort to the characters and the world. It is genuinely like a modern day Agatha Christie, but way more diverse and updated to suit our world now. Johnson has that touch of something so special and unique, but also always with a sense of something so fresh and new. She is just impeccable at constructing overarching plots that will totally destroy your mind and everything you thought you knew. Though Stevie and the gang may have moved away from the Truly Devious case, I would love to continue reading about their exploits evermore. Every book offers a totally original and fascinating mystery, while continuing to develop these characters and relationships we have come to know and love.

Stevie Bell is an icon. This has already been clearly established. She’s Sherlock Holmes for the Instagram generation, with a discerning wit and a mind that moves at a million miles an hour. Her powers of observation are mind-blowing and watching her piece together the puzzle, or reveal everything in a lengthy speech is endlessly entertaining. That classic denouement and unveiling of every last detail is always a moment that makes me drop my book in shock. Minor details you had not picked up on earlier become earth-shattering revelations. Nine Liars is no exception to this rule, with an exceptional finale that had me staying up into the early hours to complete. Of course, she is joined by a stellar cast of supporting characters, all of whom have grown so much since their first introduction. It feels like settling back with old friends and that tension of evolving and moving on is one that drives a lot of character dynamics here. There is a natural end in sight to their days spent together, with university looming, and Johnson threads in those fears of being left behind or not quite knowing where your future lies perfectly.

Johnson always makes setting play such an important part in the story, almost becoming its own character. This is such a quintessentially British mystery. I loved all the English references, though they are very much with an American tourist gloss on them. The bubble of London is burst with a rustic countryside estate, complete with an unsolved murder to boot. Of course, I ate it up! For me, it felt like a love letter to the Golden Age of Crime and the British cosy crime mysteries that Johnson is inheriting from. There are plenty of meta references and woven in tropes, though these are often challenged and undermined. The homage is clearly there but Johnson never takes the easy route. Instead, you are lured in with that sense of familiarity, but nothing is ever as it seems in the world of Truly Devious.

Nine Liars is essential reading for anyone who enjoys a good old fashioned mystery, but with a distinctively modern twist. Prepare for Johnson to fool you all over again.
