Hi, Margaret! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hello, and thank you so much for hosting Knight Eternal’s cover reveal! I’m incredibly thrilled to be here. I’m a New York Times bestselling author of mostly standalone fantasy novels for young adults. My most popular book, Sorcery of Thorns, has been translated into over a dozen languages. When I’m not reading or writing, I enjoy hiking, watching documentaries, and teaching tricks to my one-eyed rescue cat, Commodore.

Knight Eternal is out April 6^th 2027! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

A Knight/Lady forbidden romance.

What can readers expect?

For this book, I wanted to capture the elements of a classic forbidden love story between a lady and her sworn knight protector, with all the devotion, restraint, formality, and unspoken yearning that the dynamic entails. Readers can expect a slow burn, dual POV romance in which the mere touch of a hand has the intensity of a kiss. The story takes place against a fairy tale-esque backdrop replete with castles, ivy-covered ruins, dragons (including small dragon species flown in this setting’s equivalent of falconry), and a deadly curse that strikes at midnight.

Where did the inspiration for Knight Eternal come from?

I’ve wanted to write a book about a knight for what feels like an eternity! I specifically wanted to explore the idea of an immortal knight who was bound by a vow that included not being able to remove his armor, since I’ve always been drawn to that trope (the Mandalorian being a well-known example). So the Knight’s character came first, long before anything else. I came up with the idea of a story to insert him into all the way back in 2022 while looking at the painting The Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Frederic William Burton. All at once, his world expanded to include a forbidden romance with a lady, and a tower with a spiral stair as a place of central importance to the setting. It took me years to finish the book, which evolved through several different iterations, including a first draft as an adult novella written solely from the Knight’s perspective. But that moment was when it all began.

Tell us about the cover!

Where can I possibly start? Charlie Bowater is a master illustrator capable of rendering characters with incredible emotion and dramatic impact. Her work on my covers has been the luckiest development of my career. She and the art director, Sonia Chaghatzbanian, are an absolute dream team. I’ve been staring at this artwork for months and I’m still in awe of it.

Here, I love how formidable the Knight looks, but as the viewer, you can tell that his menacing appearance must be misleading to some degree, because Ophelia clearly has complete trust in him as he carries her in his arms. Since Ophelia has been physically impacted by the effects of her curse, he carries her like that quite often in the book. And by the way Charlie has illustrated her, you can see the intelligence, open-mindedness, curiosity, and determination that define her personality shining through on her face. He might be the one carrying her, but she’s the one in control. I love that contrast and the immediate sense of intrigue that it creates for the viewer.

Are there any other 2027 releases you have your eye on or that our readers should have on their radar?

If I’m allowed to cheat and include a couple of books that are coming out later this year, I’m very excited for Adam, Mine by Kayla Ancrum and Hawk & Sparrow by Ayana Gray. I’m still in the process of assembling my 2027 TBR as a consequence of being an internet hermit, but so far I’m greatly anticipating Emily Wilde’s History of Dark Faerie by Heather Fawcett.

Chapter One

The letter in Ophelia’s ink-stained fingers made no sense whatsoever. She read it a third time, just to make sure she wasn’t hallucinating. She hadn’t devised any new chemistry experiments recently, but occasionally the fumes lingered. 

His Highness Crown Prince Tristan requests the honor of attending upon Lady Ophelia Argent, proclaimed the letter’s script, its gilded ink shimmering against thick, cream-colored paper. As she drew it closer to her nose, the blurry words resolved into sharper focus. He has long heard tales of her unsurpassed beauty and charm, and it is his dearest wish to at last meet her in person.

Ophelia glanced down at her dressing gown, which had several holes in it and was spattered with the birdlike droppings of her tiercel, Credence. “He must not have heard about the time a curtain came alive and tried to throttle me,” she remarked. “Or the incident with the medieval great-ax. That one was especially bad, don’t you think?” Frankly, it was a wonder they hadn’t heard the screaming all the way from the palace.

Ophelia’s aunt, uncle, and four cousins stood in the doorway of her room, staring. With the exception of Violet, the youngest, they seldom visited Ophelia’s tower. In fact, this was the first time that all six of them had stood in her chamber simultaneously. Their rare convergence was the result of the remarkable turn of events that had begun that morning when someone had slid the envelope under Ophelia’s door, its paper sealed with the palace’s crest of dueling dragons in sky-blue wax. Who had done it still remained a mystery.

Aunt Miriam paled at the reminder of the great-ax. “We’re sure the palace has sent this letter by mistake, dear.” She spoke in a sweet, coaxing voice, as one might negotiate with a wild animal hiding beneath a bed. “Prince Tristan is soon to come of age, you see, and he must secure a marriage before he can be crowned. His advisors seem to have mistaken you for the eldest daughter of House Argent. You can turn down the request, of course,” she went on a little desperately, perhaps seeing that Ophelia wasn’t convinced. “No one would think less of you. After all, your condition is so awfully taxing. In fact, you needn’t even reply. Isn’t that right, Lord Argent?”

Ophelia sent an inquisitive glance at Lord Argent, wondering if he thought it was possible that the prince’s advisors had gotten her mixed up with Amaryllis. At nineteen, Ophelia and Amaryllis were the same age, but otherwise had little in common. Amaryllis took after her father, dark-haired and stern-featured. Ophelia might pass for Aunt Miriam’s daughter instead of her niece, having inherited the same fair hair and wintry pallor. However, the fact that the Argents had taken Ophelia in after her parents ’deaths was common knowledge, as was the fact that she was dreadfully cursed and had spent the past ten years locked away in a tower.

Ophelia didn’t expect Lord Argent to come to her rescue. He was absent for long stretches of time attending to his duties as lord of the Mosswood, and a result, she barely knew him. Of the two, Aunt Miriam unquestionably ruled the household. Whenever he returned home, Lord Argent deferred to his wife’s wishes like a drakehound being bullied by a lapdog. Even so, Ophelia was surprised to watch him uncomfortably look away instead of replying.

They want me to decline, she thought. In fact, had someone not slid this letter beneath  my door, I may never have even known it existed. And then with dawning amazement, What if it isn’t the first? The prince could have tried to contact me before, and I would be none the wiser.  Is that why someone snuck this letter to my tower?

She searched her cousins ’faces, but found no clues. Amaryllis stood gloomily by the door with a book tucked beneath her arm, avoiding Ophelia’s eyes. Flora and Poppy, the twins, hovered behind Lord Argent on the landing, their blonde, beribboned heads turning to gawk at the bundles of dried herbs hanging from the rafters, the anatomical diagrams of dissected drakes fixed to the stone walls, and Ophelia’s soiled, threadbare dressing gown. It wasn’t clear which of these horrified them the most.

Meanwhile Violet crouched in front of the bookshelves that lined the walls, making faces at her reflection in a jar of pickled salamanders.

“I suppose I would have to come down from my tower to meet him,” Ophelia ventured, struggling to imagine a prince braving her room’s barely-navigable clutter of books and beakers.

“That’s right,” Aunt Miriam hastened to reply. “And those terrible things would start happening again. I would hate to see you in danger, dear. Why, merely taking a fright could be disastrous for your health….”

Her exhortations faded as Ophelia’s mind drifted into the past. For a moment she was a child again, shadows stretching crooked tendrils across the parquet as she wandered Castle Argent’s ancient halls in her nightgown. Mists gathered in her presence; mirrors cracked down the center of her reflection. Eerie whispers trickled from the floorboards, and antique swords rattled threateningly above mantelpieces as she passed.

All of that had stopped the day Lord and Lady Argent shut her away in her tower, a decision that no doubt saved her life. Her curse’s daytime manifestations were disturbing yet harmless, but at the stroke of midnight, when it reached the height of its power, its dark magic would stop at nothing to see her dead.

The open ending of Sorcery of Thorns, which was released as a standalone, allowed us to imagine whatever future we wished for our beloved characters, but that is cold comfort compared to actually witnessing their happily-ever-after. After all the upheaval and angst of the climactic conflict in Sorcery of Thorns, many readers wished for just one extra scene to set our hearts at ease that all would be well…then in the midst of COVID isolation, while searching for an escape from depression, Margaret Rogerson found her way back to this world and thus, Mysteries of Thorn Manor was born and all our prayers answered.

Welcome to a cosy, heartwarming novella whose premise echoes the enforced isolation that everyone who has been through the pandemic will be familiar with, but in a fantastical context far removed from its inspiration and with low-stakes drama that never makes you fear true harm will come to our heroes. The author’s intention was to write a comforting slice-of-life story to catch us up with Elisabeth and her companions when they’re going about life as normal without being under the threat of imminent death or forced to thwart a catastrophic plot against the kingdom. Of course, there must be a little conflict for the protagonists to resolve, which comes in the form of malfunctioning wards magically trapping the residents of Thorn Manor indoors and preventing them from leaving with animated topiaries and a forceful magical gale to keep them imprisoned. This is a bothersome predicament, but you get the sense it’s just another Tuesday from the mild irritation and resigned determination displayed by the main characters.

Elisabeth’s trusty sword Demonslayer proves no match for the lively topiaries and it becomes evident that neither weapon nor sorcery will free them from the wards, which bizarrely react with even greater violence whenever Elisabeth and Nathaniel engage in more than a chaste kiss with one another. Their search for answers turns inwards as Nathaniel hunts down family grimoires that have recorded every update to the wards for several centuries to try and determine what has triggered the magical maelstrom.

This mystery is a fun background story element with heaps of humorous potential and tasty world-building tidbits, but it comes second to the character dynamics and relationships. Elisabeth and Nathaniel have a tentative unspoken understanding between them, but they are still dancing around those three little words, a slight amount of nerves about the extent to which their feelings might be reciprocated or not as well as uncertainty as to what the future might hold in store for them both. It’s a delightful state-of-affairs that allows for swoony romantic clinches along with a very light sprinkling of pining before heart-melting love confessions. And of course with sardonic, self-deprecating Nathaniel Thorn as half of our pairing, there is no shortage of witty banter and hilariously mocking commentary along the way.

As for Silas, he truly is the emotional anchor of this novella. After his sacrifice in Sorcery of Thorns, we mourned for him alongside Nathaniel and Elisabeth, then rejoiced at the hint of his return on the final page, but were left without satisfactory proof of his survival—well, what a feast we are given in Mysteries of Thorn Manor with all the additional Silas content a fan could hope for! There are wonderful found family sentiments entwined throughout the story as he readjusts to his place by Nathaniel and Elisabeth’s side with the new servant Mercy an initial thorn in his side until he comes to accept her presence. The most poignant scenes in this story revolve around Silas, particularly in relation to his immortal nature meaning that he is always the one left alone in the end after typically short human lifespans are snuffed out. It’s commonly believed that demons view humans as no more than insects, but Silas’s behaviour betrays the exact opposite with the depth of caring and concern he displays to a chosen few. The audience will savour every moment of platonic intimacy in his scenes with his Master and Mistress.

Mysteries of Thorn Manor is an unexpected gift to readers who will rejoice at the prospect of spending more time with the beloved characters from Sorcery of Thorns in a light-hearted fantasy romp brimming with fun, whimsy and romance.

The Book of X by Sarah Rose Etter

Etter’s debut novel is one of the most visceral, mind-bending reading experiences I’ve had in a very long time. Since reading it in May, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book! The story follows Cassie, a girl who is born with her stomach twisted into a knot, from her childhood living with her family on a meat farm (yes, you read that correctly – a quarry where they mine meat) through her adult years out on her own trying to navigate her way through the world. Etter’s blurring of surreal elements with real life experiences works tremendously well as both symbolism and commentary on issues including body image, beauty, acceptance, and expected roles. The emotional impact of Cassie’s loneliness, sadness, and pain have stuck with me and it is this immersive reading experience that made me choose The Book of X as my favourite book of 2019! – Beth Mowbray

From falling head-over-heels for the single most adorable love interest, to the tears you’ll cry when one of the girls will meet the dad that abandoned her, there’s just a whole lot of laughter and tears to be shed while reading this.

Witty, upbeat and filled with healthy relationships and the conflicts that arise when you grow up but don’t want to grow apart, this is Zentner’s strongest work to date. The best description I can give you is that it makes me feel the way I do when I binge Gilmore Girls and that is the highest compliment I can think of. – Mimi Koehler

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

Erin Morgenstern’s highly anticipated second book is an exquisitely written ode to stories, storytelling and storytellers. Multi-layered and multi-linear, its stories nested like a set of Matryoshka dolls, with different narrative threads weaving in and out, proving that all stories are different and that all stories are ultimately the same story, and packed to the brim with old-school fairy-tale symbolism; symbols, as the book reminds us, being interpretive not definitive, meaning that everyone can take away something different. The icing on the bee (or key, or sword, or heart, or crown, or indeed owl) shaped cake are all the little references to other works (be they literature, film, game etc) sprinkled throughout and one of the joys of re-reading will be trying to spot them all. The Starless Sea is a gorgeous book that builds on the magic of The Night Circus and even manages to exceed it. There is nothing better than falling in love with a new genre. And this book made it easy to fall into a deep historical romance binging hole. The lack of wit and banter in this book is nonexistent. When you don’t stop smiling the entire time you read a book you know you have found the one. What is even better is when you realise that the author has written multiple series that all intertwine perfectly (one of which is being made into a Netflix series) . Julia Quinn will not disappoint to make you laugh and tug on heart strings. – Emma Knight

Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavours by Sonali Dev

A classic retelling with your favourite characters in a modern day setting done right. Very similar to Bride and Prejudice (if you have not seen it go now and let your mind be blown) but with a dash more food and a pinch of current realism that paints DJ and Trisha’s trials and triumphs perfectly in a new contemporary fashion. Even though I knew what would happen next it was still thought provoking and heart clenchingly amazing. A book that I would happily reread and highly recommend to everyone. – Emma Knight

Margaret Rogerson offers readers a lush library setting full of living books and a thrilling magical fantasy adventure with a librarian and magician in Sorcery of Thorns.

It is in one of these Great Libraries that we meet Elisabeth, a young apprentice hoping to one day become a warden, protecting the citizens from the dangers of the grimoires. Raised a foundling, the one thing that she knows to be true is that sorcerers are evil. However, after an act of sabotage releases a powerful grimoire and her attempt to intervene only implicates her in the crime, she must rely on the help of sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn and her demonic servant. Finding themselves in a conspiracy spanning centuries, they must unravel the threads of lies and help save not only the Great Libraries, but the world. Everything that Elisabeth has known about the libraries, sorcerers, and the grimoires will be challenged, and she’ll also find out she’s more powerful than she thought she could be.

Now that I have poorly summarised a story that I enjoyed from beginning to end, let’s talk about some thoughts that I had while reading this story. I saw a tweet somewhere that gave them Howl’s Moving Castle vibes, and I 100% agree with that tweet.

I loved the characters, they felt very genuine, especially Elisabeth. There’s a naivety to her that isn’t stupidity, but mostly due to the circumstances around which she has been raised. The most important aspect about her is that she grows, learns, and adapts from the situations she’s put in without losing herself in the process. Nathaniel was a character I was surprisingly charmed by, although I did feel him to be a tad curmudgeon-ish at times.

The story flows very quickly, and I found myself devouring page after page with longing to find out where the journey was headed. Something that I loved about Sorcery of Thorns was that it felt very unexpected. Darkness hides in very surprising places, and of course we can never forget about those grimoires. I adored them. They’re some of the best objects in the book, at times ferocious and definitely to be feared, and at other time like petulant puppies nipping at your heels. I kind of want one. Ms. Rogerson gave the grimoires such unique personalities, I’m sure each reader will finish the book with a favourite.

There were a couple of things that I would have loved to see further explored in Sorcery of Thorns, especially Elisabeth’s origins. There were a couple of parts where I feel knowing a little more about her would have been great explanations to some of the things that are going on in the book. And this is just the librarian in me, but I would have loved to get some more descriptions of the other great libraries. Buuuut, that’s a personal thing.

The romance did not overpower the story, and I really liked that. The moments were perfectly sprinkled throughout the story, teasing little tidbits that I loved. Like with An Enchantment of Ravens, I feel like this would be perfect to turn into a duology, or a little longer to explore the world. This book leaves the reader wanting more. This is one of those stories you really don’t want to end, although the ending of this story is delightfully perfect. It was unexpected, or for some it might be, but I felt it was a perfect ending to the book. I felt very satisfied with the ending, and I think other readers will appreciate it as well.

I’m going to rate Sorcery of Thorns a 9/10. It was a story full of adventure, magic, whimsy, and with a delicious smattering of romance that kept me going until the last page. If we had a little more story about Elisabeth and explanation of some of the mysteries surrounding her, I think it would have given the book more depth, and flow even better. However, as a standalone book I’m excited for it to hit the shelves in June. With the cover art by Charlie Bowater, it will make a stunning addition to any shelf…and will look especially beautiful next to An Enchantment of Ravens!

The Iron King is more of a lighter fae book, but still filled with the self-obsessed fae you all know. It’s a retelling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare and many of the characters are featured in this book. An Enchantment of Ravens uses Celtic folklore elements such as the Wild Hunt and their fae worshipping nature, along with fae characters who are vain and overconfident and those who wear glamours in order to conceal their true appearance. The writing is gorgeous and the story is very well-developed which makes it an excellent read for anyone craving some fae.

Set in Scotland, The Falconer is filled with stabbing, murderous girls and faeries. The Falconer is the name for a female warrior who is born to kill the fae. Aileana is the last one of them and her reputation and social life are in shatters. It includes many major things fae lovers adore and I highly recommend it.

So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

The last book on this list is a fairly popular one. A Court of Thorns and Roses is a Beauty and the Beast retelling that has an abundance of faeries, curses and romance. Feyre is struggling to provide for her family who is pretty useless. When she kills a wolf who turns out to be a fae, she is forced to live in the Spring Court under the protection of Tamlin who is under a curse. This is a book that you will dive into and won’t want to leave.
