Hi, Lyla! Welcome back! It’s only been about six months since we last spoke, but how have you been and what have you been up to?

Hi! Thanks for having me again. Honestly I’ve been very busy, since I have four books releasing this year. So I’ve been traveling a lot, for both work and family reasons, and busy working on my next book!

Your latest novel, The Cuffing Game, is out November 18th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

LOVE ISLAND meets PRIDE & PREJUDICE. Sorry, I know that’s technically six if you count the “and.”

What can readers expect?

Readers can expect a fun, zany remix of not just Pride & Prejudice but also some of my favorite K-drama rom coms and reality TV dating shows like Love Island, Love is Blind, and Single’s Inferno. It’s a bit chaotic and the last thing I want people to think is that it’s a totally serious and faithful retelling or adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Because it’s not. I mean, Noah, my Darcy is in a frat and dances to K-pop. And Mia, my Elizabeth uses her astute observational skills to create a reality TV dating show as a college freshman. If anything, The Cuffing Game is a love letter to Pride and Prejudice and all the other things I love and got me through some of the hardest times of my life.

Where did the inspiration for The Cuffing Game come from?

It’s funny because despite the above, I never really set out to write this book. I actually had a bunch of different ideas that I submitted to my editor and turned this particular one in on a whim, with an off handed note about how I “went to film school and maybe that could be an interesting point of topic to write about.” My editor at the time, Mabel Hsu, told me to jump on that idea, and the rest was history, especially once I snowballed my teen self’s obsession with Pride and Prejudice (especially the 2005 adaptation with Keira Knightley) and my adult self’s love of reality TV in there. I had a lot of fun with this project and I hope readers do too.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

Not to spoil too much but I really enjoyed the quiet, off-camera moments between Mia and Noah where they just talk by the fire pit and slowly catch feelings while learning about themselves and the other person.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

This book itself was actually one of the easiest for me to write, just because of how quickly everything went. If anything, I had a lot of trouble juggling, well, life in general because around the time I worked on this book, I had to juggle not just multiple deadlines but a family emergency and wedding planning (!), too. The last couple of years have been super stressful and the only reason I overcame them is because of my loved ones, who have provided an amazing support system throughout the years. So cling tight to your friends and/or family, fellow writers!

What’s the best and worst writing advice you’ve received?

Best: Write what you’re passionate about

Worst: Write what you know.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on my next adult romance, a steamy enemies to lovers book set in both the K-drama industry and Hollywood.

Lastly, what books are you looking forward to picking up in 2026?

I’m looking forward to The Shippers by Katherine Center, Last First Kiss by Julian Winters, and The Starter Ex by Mia Sosa.

Hi, Lyla! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m Lyla. I’m an author of books for all ages that are inspired by my love of pop culture and my Korean American heritage. I was born in South Korea but have primarily lived in the US (although I do go back home every year), residing in states like California, Florida, and Texas. Love in Focus is my debut adult romance novel.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

Well, I was always an avid reader, and my mom likes to tell people that I was “writing books before I could even read,” coming up with my own stories using the pictures in books even when I was too young to understand the words. But I began writing when I was in fourth grade. I had an awesome teacher named Mrs. Brown who was an aspiring author herself. She’d come up with the wildest stories and somehow insert all the people in our class as characters in her tales. I don’t remember much about the plot of these stories, but I just remember how my classmates and I were always at the edge of our seats, and that’s when I first fell in love with storytelling as an artform.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

The first book you ever remember reading: The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. I was so upset by the Snowman dying at the end (and the fact that the story was about just a boy meeting a snowman) when I read it in first grade that I made my own gender bent version of it where the snow girl and human girl walk off into the sunset together. No wonder I grew up to be a queer romance author, haha.

The one that made you want to become an author: The Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne. I loved those books so much that in fourth grade, I made my own spin off series where the two siblings fall into a portal in their basement and travel to another planet. Are you sensing a pattern here?

The one that you can’t stop thinking about: Recently, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, because of all the anniversaries (Iike the 20th anniversary of the 2005 cinematic adaptation) going on this year. And yes, I did write my own version of that as well, as The Cuffing Game, which is coming out on Nov. 18th from HarperCollins.

Your latest novel, Love in Focus, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Cute, sexy, sapphic, and exes-to-lovers.

What can readers expect?

They can expect a book with the vibes of a Halsey song and Chappell Roan song fused into one story. Two exes who still love each other after all these years but are too afraid to admit it. They can’t keep their hands off each other but they have to work on a project about love and interview other people about their love lives while their own relationship histories lie in shambles. Sapphic yearning and drama at its finest. But also? Strong female friendships like the ones in 2010s shows like The Bold Type and Younger, but queer and diverse. There’s only one prominent male character in this book and he’s the villain, not so much because “I hate men” but because this was a book I wrote for women, and especially the ones who are queer.

Where did the inspiration for Love in Focus come from?

My love for the above shows, which aren’t the most accurate in depicting various industries, haha, but had such great “girlhood” themes and female friendship dynamics. As for the romance in Love in Focus, that was inspired by a Halsey album, hopeless fountain kingdom (2017), which featured songs like “Bad at Love” and “Strangers.” “Bad at Love” is the first song I ever listened to that was so unapologetically bi (Halsey sings about her bad experiences with both men and women), and in such a “disaster bi” way, too. I heavily related with that song since I also had comedically disastrous experiences with both men and women in my twenties, so I always wanted to write a book about that. “Strangers” is a duet with Halsey and Lauren Jauregui. It was the opposite of a love song, a “lovers to exes” rather than an “exes to lovers,” but it was the first time I’d heard a romantic duet between two women and had so much sapphic yearning that it also inspired Love in Focus.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I loved all the moments that Gemma and Celeste connected with one another through their shared heritage and similar experiences. I also loved writing the dynamic between Gemma and her best friends since I put a lot of the love I have for my own chaotic queer friends into the book.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

I didn’t experience any challenges while writing the book, itself. But I did have to write it while also working on three other books (two middle grade releases—Mindy Kim and the Fun, Family Vacation and Gigi Shin, Live from Manhattan for Simon & Schuster—and a YA release—The Cuffing Game for HarperCollins, all of which are also 2025 releases). Throw in some personal and familial health crises and other real-life challenges that popped up, and last year was a really tough year for me, professionally and personally. It was a wild way to turn 30, haha. And I overcame everything by…not sleeping, sadly. And pushing through. But I also took breaks and found joy in the small mundane things (like ice cream! Walks outside! Hanging out with friends—when I could see them!).

What’s next for you?

I have another adult romance coming out next year. I can’t say much about it yet other than the fact that it’s a bi4bi romance (both the male and female leads are bi) and it’s very sexy. In the YA realm, I have The Cuffing Game coming out in November. As I mentioned before, The Cuffing Game was inspired by Pride and Prejudice, but in its final form, it’s more of a modern-day K-drama remix that’s Pride and Prejudice meets Love Island.

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed reading this year?

As a long-time fan of Emily Henry, I’m currently enjoying her latest, Great, Big Beautiful Life.

I’m also trying a new thing this year where I’m trying to rediscover my love for reading for fun by participating in various local book clubs. For those clubs, I’ve enjoyed reading Messy Roots by Laura Gao, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, and A Banh Mi for Two by Trinity Nguyen.

After absolutely loving Lee’s debut novel I’ll Be The One, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Flip the Script. In this story, we follow Hana, who has landed her dream role in a new K-drama. She’s about to make her big K-drama debut and things couldn’t be better. However, when things don’t go as planned and the series ratings and reviews drop, Hana and the studio need to come up with a solution to save the show. Suddenly, Hana not only finds herself fake dating her annoying male co-star, but also facing a problem at work when the studio hires a new girl to challenge Hana’s role as main love interest and it turns out to be none other than Hana’s former friend who she trumped in the casting process early on. Can Hana fight for her position on the school while falling in love for her on-screen rival in real life?

I really enjoyed reading a book that is set on the set of and surrounding a K-drama. While I’m not the most avid watcher of them, I felt like the vibes really represented the drama, glitz, and glam yet harsh downsides of being in the spotlight as a Korean actress. We also get to see so many different aspects of Seoul since Hana is taken to quite a few places on fake outings with her fake boyfriend and later on with Minjee while they’re trying to keep their relationship secret. Lee describes these lesser known places in Seoul with so much detail that you can really imagine what it must look like which I definitely enjoyed.

Now, Hana is struggling with the fear of disappointing her parents who moved to Seoul for her career and that influences a lot of her decisions throughout the book. One of them being the studio forcing her and her co-star Bryan to enact a fake relationship to make viewers guess at the outcome of both their characters’ arc on their K-drama as well as their personal relationship. I think this highlighted fandom craze and possessiveness of fans quite accurately as Bryan is also a known K-pop star and has very devoted fans who aren’t always…cordial to Hana. While I often didn’t understand Bryan’s motives and didn’t quite believe him falling for Hana in the few short interactions we get with them on their dates that always seem to end in chaos, I did really enjoy Bryan as a character and think he was such a sweetheart for the way he supported Hana when she came clean about her feelings for Minjee.

Speaking of Minjee, perhaps because of the book’s heavy focus on the somewhat initially reluctant friendship between Hana and Bryan, the rivals-to-lovers and overall romance aspect fell a bit flat. Minjee and Hana are friends and the only rivalry they really had was for the role that Hana snagged. Likewise, when Minjee first appears on the set, there is no sense of true rivalry and it’s glossed over pretty quickly as we learn that Hana has had a crush on Minjee for a while. Unfortunately, their friendship and eventual romance almost felt like an afterthought since so much focus was on Hana and Bryan and their struggle with pleasing the studio while also not alienating Bryan’s fans or making Hana the target of hate crimes, and we rarely get to see Minjee and Hana interacting beyond retellings of their phone calls or short bantery interactions. There was more potential to explore their relationship and their dynamic with Bryan that would have added more to the story. I also would have wished for a bit more depth to Minjee’s character as well because we often only get to hear what Hana thinks of Minjee and of the expectation Minjee’s parents and the studio have for her which felt like a missed opportunity. Nevertheless, the few moments we actually get between Hana and Minjee were absolutely adorable and I really liked their bonding on the set as well as their fight for more queer representation in Korean media.

The resolution of this story as well as how the script of the K-drama the three characters are on is flipped was super sweet and definitely made me wish that more K-dramas (and television in general) would give the spotlight to queer characters and change up the same old narrative. I think it’s so validating to see representation change and hope that life imitates art when it comes to how the K-drama ended, but no spoilers.

A love letter to K-dramas, Flip the Script is a fluffy, breezy romance, offering behind-the-scenes looks at K-dramas and a fun queer twist on the fake dating and secret relationship trope.

Flip the Script is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of May 31st 2022.

The first rule of watching K-dramas: Never fall in love with the second lead.

After all, she promised the producers a contract romance, and that’s all they’re going to get from her.

But when showrunners bring on a new girl to challenge Hana’s role as main love interest—and worse, it’s someone Hana knows all too well—can Hana fight for her position on the show while falling for her on-screen rival in real life?

Both a primer for teens eager to be allies as well as a reassuring testimony for young queer men of color, All Boys Aren’t Bluecovers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy. Johnson’s emotionally frank style of writing will appeal directly to young adults.

Saoirse doesn’t believe in love at first sight or happy endings. If they were real, her mother would still be able to remember her name and not in a care home with early onset dementia. A condition that Saoirse may one day turn out to have inherited. So she’s not looking for a relationship. She doesn’t see the point in igniting any romantic sparks if she’s bound to burn out.

But after a chance encounter at an end-of-term house party, Saoirse is about to break her own rules. For a girl with one blue freckle, an irresistible sense of mischief, and a passion for rom-coms.

Unbothered by Saoirse’s no-relationships rulebook, Ruby proposes a loophole: They don’t need true love to have one summer of fun, complete with every cliché, rom-com montage-worthy date they can dream up—and a binding agreement to end their romance come fall. It would be the perfect plan, if they weren’t forgetting one thing about the Falling in Love Montage: when it’s over, the characters actually fall in love… for real.

The reason why we have placed these two together is that sometimes, a character will have relationships with men and women without their sexuality explicitly stated.

That said, we have found a wonderfully array of reads for you that we hope you will enjoy as much as we at The Nerd Daily did. Again, we have divided our recommendations into genres so that hopefully everyone can find something to their interests, or perhaps expand into new genres!
