Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Lauren Oliver’s What Happened To Lucy Vale, which is out September 1st 2025.

Who in their right mind would move into the Faraday House, with its grim history and a generation spent rotting and untended? Rachel Vale and her daughter, Lucy.

They’ve arrived unexpectedly, yet with peculiar purpose, to Woodward, Indiana, to rent the most infamous house in town. Here, sixteen years ago, Nina Faraday vanished without a trace and her mother was found hanging from an apple tree in the front yard. It was the stuff of ghoulish fascination and dark imaginings. Old rumors are stirred up all over again by an online community of teenagers now fixated on Lucy, the new girl in school…especially when Lucy’s shattering romance with the swim team star becomes another small-town obsession.

This time the kids in Woodward will be asking: What happened to Lucy Vale?

Parallel mysteries soon converge―about two teenage girls, nearly two decades apart, both consumed by the stories and suspicions of others. Only a mother can bring the truth to devastating light.

Eleanor & Park: A Novel by Rainbow Rowell
Goodreads

The relatability of two teens falling for each other over a mutual love of comics and The Smiths is a testament to Rainbow Rowell’s ability to tap into the teenage experience, where first loves are sweet, awkward, and all-consuming. Rowell’s young adult debut goes nicely with Green’s, launching them both into superstardom among teens.

Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Sara Shepard and Nicola Yoon
Goodreads

Speaking of meet-cutes, here’s a whole slew of short stories about teens who seem almost destined for each other after being brought together serendipitously. Some of the biggest names in YA, from Nicola Yoon to Sara Shepard, contributed to this swoon-worthy collection.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Goodreads

How would you make the most of your last day on Earth? Part high school mystery, part poignant coming-of-age story, Lauren Oliver’s propulsive novel about a teen who is forced to live her last day over and over again (à la Groundhog Day) will surprise you. It’s a beautiful exploration of how we can be kinder to those around us — one that will make you think twice about the daily choices we all make.

Every Day by David Levithan
Goodreads

Every Day has a set-up with an extreme hypothetical premise: What if you became a different person every single day? A touching, thought-provoking look at what factors really matter when choosing to love someone and a contemplation on moral responsibilities.

Quiet implications of deep distress and profound happiness litter this epistolary novel, penned by outsider Charlie, who makes inroads with various cliques to move past cliches.
For me, the moment I read the synopsis, I knew I had to read this book. Mystery has never been one of my go-to genres, but I figured this one sounded like it would be definitely worth a try.

The story is told from two perspectives: Brynn and Mia. Both were best friends to Summer Marks and we alternate between the two characters’ perspectives with chapters broken up with quotes from The Way Into Lovelorn.

Brynn is easily a favourite. She was funny and her points of view were the funniest in my opinion. She admitted to the mistakes that she made even if she didn’t voice them out loud. She had flaws, but so does every character. Mia was a lot more quiet and didn’t really say much to most people. She stood up when something wrong was done or said so that’s one thing. Both girls had their own things to deal with in this story and it was enjoyable getting to know how different they both were from one another.

The story was really easy to get into. I was interested from the beginning until the end and you’ll find yourself playing detective and keeping a mental profile of all the characters trying to guess who the murderer really was. Personally, I guessed who really killed Summer early on in the book but kept it aside. At some point, I was 100% sure I was right. Turns out I actually was. I felt like guessing the killer really dimmed the magic of the story for me a little bit. For many other readers though the killer was a complete surprise so it really depends on the person. That being said, I’d still recommend this book! Overall, the story was really enjoyable, especially the writing style too.

It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped. She drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother. But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin.

Before I Fall follows a teenage girl when she is tragically killed in a car accident and forced to relive the same day over and over—Groundhog Day-style.

The film is based on Lauren Oliver’s novel of the same name, who has also written the best-selling Delirium trilogy. When it comes to book-to-film adaptions, I fall into the category of those who prefer to read the book prior to watching the movie and typically the book is always better, however, sometimes the film can surpass its original source material.

With the Groundhog Day concept done many of times in both television and film, Oliver did a commendable job with the book, but this may not be this case for the film.

The film follows Sam (Zoey Deutch) who is your typical high school student until she is killed on February 12th. After the car accident, instead of dying, she instantly wakes up to have the day replay again and again until something changes. Her character is considered to be part of the well-known clique in her high school and their clique are praised as if they are the ‘Regina George and minions’ of the school.

In the novel, Oliver did well to depict the high school setting, which isn’t always achieved well in all young adult novels. In many high school based plots, it’s always one of the outcasts who beat the popular kids, but in this story, Sam turns on her friends in order to understand what’s going on.

As she relives each day over, she discovers there has been some drama involving a girl named Juliet, who later commits suicide. Eventually the conflict is resolved, but does it end happily? Read or watch to find out!

The film stars Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy), Halston Sage (Paper Towns) and Elena Kampouris (My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2). Before I Fall is out in most cinemas worldwide.
