We chat with author Katy Rose Pool about her latest release Garden of the Cursed, which follows cursebreaker Marlow Briggs who reluctantly pretends to be in love with one of the most powerful nobles in Caraza City to gain entry into an illustrious—and deadly—society that holds clues to her mother’s disappearance.

Hi, Katy! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I’m Katy Rose Pool, author of The Age of Darkness series and, most recently, Garden of the Cursed. I’m originally from Los Angeles and now live in Oakland, California with my incredibly orange cat Curry (named for the basketball player, not the food). When I’m not writing about curses and magical speakeasies, I enjoy cooking, hiking in the redwoods, and browsing the shelves of the Bay Area’s many excellent bookstores.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

Very, very early on in my life I knew that creating worlds and making up stories was something I was going to do for the rest of my life. I used to make up elaborate pretend games with my sister and friends, transforming our backyard into a prehistoric jungle, our bunkbeds into a spaceship bound for new galaxies, our family vacations into a quest for magic items and hidden treasures. It was just always something I was doing, wherever I was, and it wasn’t long before I started trying to commit those fantastical daydreams to paper.

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

The first real book I ever remember reading was Nancy Drew (there’s that mystery influence!). The book that made me want to become an author was KA Applegate’s Animorphs series—I loved how imaginative and immersive it was, and how it didn’t shy away from difficult topics just because it was a “kid’s series”. I still think about the ending to that series on like, a monthly basis. The book I haven’t stopped thinking about since I read it is Piranesi by Susanna Clarke—for how short a book it is, it definitely made a huge impact. The narrative voice is so lovely and it’s one of those books that feels magical, like it’s casting a spell on you with every page.

Your latest novel, Garden of the Cursed, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Magic, mystery, grit, glamor, romance.

What can readers expect?

A crackling romance. A fantastical city steeped in magic and danger. A hard-boiled mystery with secrets and schemes around every corner. There are two mysteries at the heart of this book–one revolves around what happened to Marlow’s mother, whose disappearance upended her entire life. And the other is the mystery of who cursed Adrius Falcrest, the scion of the most powerful family in the city—and the boy who once broke Marlow’s heart. Unraveling these mysteries means navigating a world filled with dark curses, enchanted speakeasies, and spells that can be bought, sold, and traded on the black market.

Garden of the Cursed is a book about the truth, and what it’s worth. It’s about the human cost of capitalism and how greed begets greed. Mostly, though, it’s about a girl who refuses to give in to a worth that wants her to feel powerless. Marlow is one of my favorite character’s I’ve ever written—she’s tough, tenacious, hates being vulnerable, and is absolutely relentless when it comes to finding the truth. This book was a lot of fun to write, and I hope it’s a lot of fun to read!

Where did the inspiration for Garden of the Cursed come from?

Honestly, as with most of my books, I couldn’t really tell you! I definitely drew a lot of inspiration from hardboiled mysteries and the noir genre. I really loved Veronica Mars as a teen, and that idea of a cynical, teen girl detective always stuck with me as a really interesting character to explore. I also think a lot of times the projects I feel most drawn to are kind of a rebellion against the book I was most recently ensconced in. So while my first series was epic and almost cosmic in scope, Garden is much more intimate, dealing with the politics and workings of a single city. While The Age of Darkness trilogy was pure, high fantasy, Garden has a bit of an urban fantasy feel and noir elements. I like to challenge myself in a new way with every project, and I definitely did that with this book.

Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

Oh man, so much of this book was just a blast to write. But I definitely really enjoyed getting to play around with the fake dating trope—Marlow and Adrius have a really fun push and pull relationship to begin with. Add to that the layers of trying to convince the rest of the world that they’re in love while desperately trying to convince themselves that they aren’t—it made for some very fun, dynamic scenes. A lot of this book deals with the cost of secrets and façades, but it’s the moments when the truth bursts out that end up being the most devastating.

Can you give us a little teaser for book two?

Without spoiling too much, I will say that Marlow and Adrius are in a very different situation in book two than they are in book one. I’ll also say there are a few new players in Caraza that are definitely going to cause more trouble for both of them.

Someone—and I’m blanking on who it was—once told me that the structure of a duology should really be that the first book poses a question that the second book answers. That’s how I approached this series. If the first book is all about solving these mysteries, then the second book is about how solving a mystery doesn’t necessarily mean justice has been served—in fact, sometimes solving the mystery creates even bigger problems.

What’s next for you?

Right now I’m hard at work on the sequel to Garden of the Cursed. After that, we’ll see! I definitely have a few ideas I’m eager to explore, but nothing has been set in stone yet. I always think that’s kind of a fun place to be in though, and I trust that the right idea will grab hold of me when the time is right—after all, that’s exactly what happened with Garden of the Cursed.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Some recent reads I’ve enjoyed immensely are The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi and The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. Both are more on the adult side but are incredibly immersive and beautifully written. I also want to shout out The Grimoire of Grave Fates anthology, which is perfect for anyone who likes fantasy mysteries and also has an incredibly cool structure—each chapter is written by a different contributor, but they all form one cohesive story.

Will you be picking up Garden of the Cursed? Tell us in the comments below!

There’s nothing more satisfying than finally finishing a series. It’s a bittersweet moment as you close the book, knowing you’ve been on an incredible journey with amazing characters. As I stepped back into the world Katy Rose Pool built up, I couldn’t help but hold my breath as I discovered what fate would fall on this beloved cast of characters. I’d been waiting for Beru to come into her own for two books, and her journey was one of the most satisfying I think. They all are, but for whatever reason, Beru’s really stuck with me as I was reading this time. There’s no excuse not to add this trilogy to your TBR as it’s a completed series and I honestly think if you’re a lover of YA fantasy with a complex world and characters, then this is perfect for you. There’s a lot of intrigue and political plots afoot, there’s slow burning romance, and romance that sizzles, so it has a little bit of everything.

Now, if you haven’t picked up the previous books in this series, you should go read them now! I’ll attempt to keep this review as spoiler free as I can, but I might spoil some of the previous two as I talk about Into the Dying Light.

With the City of Mercy destroyed and an ancient god awakened inside of Beru, things seem bleak. Everyone, including the newly awakened god are at the mercy of the Prophet Pallas. He’s using the god’s power to subjugate the Six Prophetic Cities, but every day, the god’ power is growing stronger…and it’s a matter of time before he breaks free. Meanwhile, Anton is learning how to use his powers as a Prophet, while also discovering the truth on how the previous Prophets were able to kill the god the first time. He uncovers a secret that could cost the group their entire mission to save the world. Hassan, Ephyra, Beru, Anton, and Jude will have to form alliances in a race against time to save the world, or bring it to ruin.

With how the story has built up in the first two books, it’s no surprise that the final book in this trilogy is fraught with tension from the beginning. I worried that with how it was starting it might decrease over time, but it did not disappoint. From start to finish, this book just kept building into something better at each turn. Each character is going through some sort of mental or physical anguish. Mental health has deteriorated, and it seems like every single one of them is out to be the hero. While the trust they have in one another is tenuous at best, they still have to have some sort of faith that they might succeed.

There’s so much character development in this book, and it was all so thoughtful. I noticed a lot of personal reflection happening, some of it for the better, and some of it not. I do think readers will be able to identify with some of their choices. Now that relationships have been established, how far are you willing to go…how much will you sacrifice to make sure they stay safe? Beru and Ephyra’s sibling relationship development was by far the most important to me. I think each reader will have a specific person/group/couple they might focus on. For me, it was how these two sisters came to an understanding of one another.

The worldbuilding in this book is absolutely incredible, and continues even into the third book. Not only do we get our character perspectives, but we get glimpses into what happened when the god was killed the first time. It’s a vital point to the story, and I love how each piece of this story interconnected in a way that not only made sense, but drove the current plot forward. It made the revelations later on in the story so much more satisfying.

For those of you interested in the romance side of the story, there’s a bit of everything for each reader. There’s quite a lot of mostly honest and open communication happening for characters, and I loved the way that Pool wrapped up the romance in the book. There’s quite a lot to love here, and I shipped them all. There’s also some redemption for a character I’d been skeptical about over the previous two books. I was so determined not to like them…and Katy had to go and make them vulnerable! Sigh. Haha, all in all though, I loved every aspect of this story.

If we were to compare the books, there’s no doubt that this third book was everything I was looking for and more. Everything wrapped up well, and I believe in a satisfying way. I’m sad to say goodbye to these characters. This was a series that I didn’t have to go back and reread to remember exactly where I’d left off, and I can see myself going back to it again and again. I cannot wait to see what else Katy Rose Pool has in store for readers. With the whole series out now, it would also make an excellent gift to an avid reader!

Into the Dying Light is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

In the jaw-dropping conclusion to the Age of Darkness trilogy, hearts will shatter, cities will fall, and a god will rise.

Following the destruction of the City of Mercy, an ancient god has been resurrected and sealed inside Beru’s body. Both are at the mercy of the Prophet Pallas, who wields the god’s powers to subjugate the Six Prophetic Cities. But every day, the god grows stronger, threatening to break free and sow untold destruction.

Meanwhile, far away from Pallas Athos, Anton learns to harness his full powers as a Prophet. Armed with the truth about how the original Prophets killed the god, Anton leads Jude, Hassan, and Ephyra on a desperate quest to the edge of the world. With time running out, the group’s tenuous alliance is beset by mounting danger, tumultuous romance, and most of all by a secret that Anton is hiding: a way to destroy the god at the price of an unbearable sacrifice. But the cost of keeping that secret might be their lives—and the lives of everyone in the Six Prophetic Cities.

The Age of Darkness trilogy is perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Children of Blood and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes.

This story is definitely going to hit you where it hurts, and I need a romantic comedy to read after finishing it! As the Shadow Rises was definitely a magnificent novel that continues to build on these stunning characters with some pretty serious expectations on their shoulders. Again, we get to see the story from five perspectives, which continues to provide phenomenal insight as to what is happening around their world and how it might shape them into heroes or fall from grace into something much darker. This is certainly not one you’ll want to miss, but I would advise if you are easily triggered by violence and murder to read this with caution. I personally loved this sequel, but it also tackles some heavier topics.

Before we get into the summary of this story, please keep in mind that this is a sequel, and although I try my best, there might be some spoilers for There Will Come A Darkness.

As the Shadow Rises picks up where There Will Come A Darkness left off. The prophet has been found, but the kingdoms are beginning to fall to a doomsday cult that will do everything they can to get their claws into the prophet. Anton is having terrifying visions of the Age of Darkness, while Jude is having trouble with his feelings toward Anton and his mission as the Keeper of the Word. Ephyra is on a journey to try and do anything to save her sister from a second death, even if it means watching the world burn. Hassan, now a prince without a home, has formed a risky alliance to try and regain his throne. Light and dark are on a collision course, and the end of the world will begin.

I’ll admit that it took me a little longer to get into the story than I thought and I think this was partially because I’ve been going through a reading slump, but also because it felt like there was a bit of set-up/retelling that was happening to get readers up to speed with everything going on. For me, it started to pick up around a quarter of the way in, and then never stopped. Boy did I love Ephyra and Beru’s perspectives in this one! All of the characters are having to do some hard growth, but these two really clinched it for me. Jude too, because of his continual issues. He’s lost his power, but in keeping his secret, he’s damaging himself more than anything.

The amount of desperation that these characters experience is palpable on a level that made me cradle this book to my chest and hope they’re going to be okay. The betrayals happening in this book feel next level at times, because it hurts so much more. Readers have already been on this journey with our characters, and watching them struggle feels like an actual blow. My heart went out to Hassan especially, because I felt like the poor prince can’t catch a break!

Let’s talk about the antagonists in this book for a second, because man, did it hit different this time. There’s no doubt that there’s some not great shenanigans afoot, but wow, did Katy twist this story up. That ending left me with SO MANY QUESTIONS, and not enough answers. One thing is for sure, we don’t have the entire picture yet, and I can’t wait to uncover it in the next book. There’s also a bit of redemption going on with one of the characters, and I can’t decide if I love it yet. But I definitely feel like it’s going on the right track.

Now the romance in this book kept kindling that blaze from the first one. Those relationships are growing, changing, and evolving into very interesting things. I’m honestly curious what will happen from here because some of them felt a little unexpected, but very right in my head. My favourite development was between Jude and Anton. I’m so ready to see what’s going to happen between those two. I probably shouldn’t ship all of our characters with who they’re with, but the romantic in me really wants to just push them together and go “just say you love each other already!!”.

Aside from a slow start, this book has really built up to an epic climax. I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the next book, but we can rest assured that Katy Rose Pool will definitely wow us with what’s to come. Go and put it on your TBR!

As The Shadow Rises is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

Six of Crows meets Graceling with a dash of Winter is Coming in this second installment of the action-packed and swoon-worthy Age of Darkness series!

The Last Prophet has been found, yet he sees destruction ahead.

In this sequel to the critically-acclaimed There Will Come a Darkness, kingdoms have begun to fall to a doomsday cult, the magical Graced are being persecuted, and an ancient power threatens to break free. But with the world hurtling toward its prophesized end, Anton’s haunting vision reveals the dangerous beginnings of a plan to stop the Age of Darkness.

As Jude, Keeper of the Order of the Last Light, returns home in disgrace, his quest to aid the Prophet is complicated by his growing feelings for Anton. Meanwhile, the assassin known as the Pale Hand will stop at nothing to find her undead sister before she dies for good, even if it means letting the world burn. And in Nazirah, Hassan, the kingdom-less Prince, forms a risky pact to try to regain his throne. When the forces of light and darkness collide in the City of Mercy, old wounds are reopened, new alliances are tested, and the end of the world begins.

That is not the case in There Will Come A Darkness by Katy Rose Pool. She cultivates this stunning world with an impending age of darkness, and characters who will collide in all sorts of ways to save it, or bring about the destruction. I’ve never felt such an impending doom, or been so excited for the conflict that is to come as I have been in this book. I felt like the story played out like an intricate game of chess, and as each character moved, you could see the resulting consequences of their actions. There’s plenty more I will say later, but for now let’s get into what this story is about. A quick warning before we continue, this story does have some traumatic events, so if you are easily triggered by themes of assault, death, or torture, this might be a story to approach with caution.

In There Will Come a Darkness, seven Prophets guided and united humanity, leaving it free from wars until 100 years ago, when they disappeared. At the time of their disappearance they left one last prophecy, one that tells of an Age of Darkness to come, and a new Prophet who could save it, or bring the world to ruin. With chaos taking hold, five people are destined to cross paths in potentially disastrous ways: a prince exiled from his kingdom, an assassin known as the Pale Hand, a faithful leader torn between duty to the people versus his heart, a gambler with the power to find anyone or anything, and finally, a dying girl who’s ready to give up. One or all of them could bring about the destruction to their world, the question is, what will they choose?

The five main characters in this story are Ephyra, Hassan, Jude, Anton, and Beru. We begin in Ephyra’s point of view, and for me was both a brutal and satisfying first scene (as someone who is not easily triggered by assault, death, or torture…at least in books). I’m not sure if I can disclose who exactly these characters are, so in fear of spoiling it, I won’t. What I can tell you is that most of these characters have gone through, or are currently going through some sort of trauma. It’s terrifying, and you get to see how these traumas and happenings are shaping these characters in good or potentially bad ways. It makes the clashes between characters all the more complex and dramatic. The further you go into the story, the more layers you’ll have to unpack, and you may not have all of the pieces of the puzzle.

All of these characters display in incredible amount of growth, but this felt especially true for Hassan and Beru. I’ll admit that my favourite character was Anton though. Of all the characters, he put up this strong facade, but was ultimately the most vulnerable. Jude and Ephyra were the ones that frustrated me the most, if only because some of the choices they made were questionable, but definitely had or will have consequences in the future. On the other side of it, that’s what I loved so much about it. It’s all about the choices here. The characters are making moves that may not have an effect upon the current storyline, but somewhere down the line, there is a consequence for their actions.

Some characters that you’ll certainly love to hate in this story are the antagonists. They are just as complex as the characters that I had almost missed them…until I wound up with a knife in the ribs. They’re masters of deception, and will break your heart in all kinds of ways, leaving you with a monster of a grudge. There was one particular character I loathed, and it’s because of the psychological trauma they put another character through.

You’ll find some romance in this book, a slow ember that will eventually become a roaring blaze. I felt that it was well cultivated and diverse, and I can’t wait to see it continue to grow in the next book. The magic system was so cool, I liked the idea of being graced and of esha. It was interesting, and I felt it was adequately described. The pacing was moderate, and I think it was perfect for the book. If it was any faster, readers might miss something that could be incredibly important to the story.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this story is a 10/10. The world building is spectacular and it’s a perfect stormy night or fall time read. It’s a harrowing journey of a cast of characters that may or may not survive until the end, but they’re damn sure going to try. I cannot wait for the sequel, because we’re building up to some epic conflict! Please check it out if you have the opportunity!

Synopsis | Goodreads

The Age of Darkness approaches.
Five lives stand in its way.
Who will stop it… or unleash it?

For generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of the future, they ended wars and united nations―until the day, one hundred years ago, when the Prophets disappeared.

All they left behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world’s salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set on a collision course:

A prince exiled from his kingdom.
A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand.
A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart.
A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone.
And a dying girl on the verge of giving up.

One of them―or all of them―could break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer? Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Children of Blood and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes.
