About The Love Haters (out May 20th 2025): It’s a thin line between love and love-hating in the newest laugh out loud, all the feels rom-com by New York Times bestselling author Katherine Center. Swim lessons, helicopter flights, conga lines, drinking contests, hurricanes, and stolen kisses ensue—along with chances to tell the truth, to face old fears, and to be truly brave at last.

If I could ban one word from all romance novel reviews, it would be the word “predictable.”

As a writer of love stories who reads lots of reviews (for my books and others), I see this word all the time.

The problem is, it’s not useful. In fact, most of the time, it’s misleading.

Because stories of any genre always have two components going at the same time: the big picture (the overarching structure), and the little picture (the scenes and details). The big picture is kind of where the story’s going, and the little picture is how it gets there.

In any genre novel, the big picture will be predictable. It just is. It’ll head in a certain predictable and genre-specific direction, and it’ll use some basic tropes we’ve seen many times before. Those familiar things are, in fact, essential to the pleasure of reading a genre book, and giving the readers the experience they showed up for.

In a mystery, the detective will solve the mystery—possibly while staying at a large country estate. In a thriller, the hero will get to safety in the nick of time—possibly while grieving his murdered wife. In a spy novel, the spy will outsmart the villains—likely while sporting a tuxedo.

And yes, in a romance . . . the two lovers will fall in love—probably after sharing Only One Bed. If we’re lucky.

Of course they will! It’s why we’re here!

How unsatisfying would it be to open up a love story and not . . . find any love there? How frustrating to spend three hundred pages waiting for these two people to overcome all obstacles and get together, already . . . only to watch them lose interest in each other? Or move to Antarctica? Or get hit by two separate busses?

How appalling.

It’s a constitutional guarantee in a romance: you will arrive at a Happily Ever After by the end. If it doesn’t end happily, it’s not a romance.

Is that predictable? Sure.

But is that really worth talking about? I mean, it’s a given.

Yet we talk about it anyway.

“Predictable” isn’t a neutral word. It’s always got a hint of an eye-roll about it.

We’ve been taught that a good ending must be—has to be—surprising. But I don’t always agree. A surprising ending is one kind of satisfying ending, yeah. It can be terrifically fun to expect one thing in a story and then get something different.

But guess what else can be satisfying?

Oh, for example: being driven into a frenzy of longing over the course of an entire novel—and then, at the end, getting the exact thing you were longing for.

That might even be more satisfying, honestly.

So I’m not sure we need to be upset if a genre ending is exactly what we expected. The author wasn’t trying to trick us. Especially in a romance! Romances are built on a delicious, rising feeling of anticipation. That’s the engine that drives those stories forward and keeps us turning pages.

I’ll point out that anticipation and surprise are opposite emotions. You can’t not be surprised by something you’re anticipating, and you can’t anticipate a surprise.

A romance writer’s most important job is to create a swoony feeling of anticipation for that happy ending. And there’s no way to do that and also surprise people with that ending at the same time.

So surprise—for the ending, at least—has to go out the window.

This really bothers some people.

They saw it coming in Chapter One! They called it!

Yeah. They were supposed to. That was a gift the story gave them. Three hundred beautiful, blissful pages of looking forward to these adorable leads falling into each other’s arms.

A great love story makes you want that HEA so bad—and then it gives it to you.

How glorious.

Did the writer write a “predictable” ending? Or . . . did she create a fantastic feeling of anticipation—and then totally frigging deliver?

All to say . . . at their core, book reviews are about helping other readers decide if they will like a book. And “predictable” is a confounding word in that context—because “predictable” implies failure.

While romance novels have no choice but to be predictable in the big picture—leads meet, fall for each other, lose each other, and then overcome it all—in the little picture, it’s a different story.

Where we’re going is —and has to be—predictable.

But how we get there?

That’s what makes or breaks a romance.

The details of the story—the places they go, the gestures they make, the ways they tease each other, the things they’re afraid of, the nervous habits they can’t shake, that pebble he always carries in his pocket, the ring her grandmother gave her that she spins on her finger—those elements of the story should be endlessly new, and specific, and surprising.

If those things are predictable? That’s not good.

That’s a deal breaker, honestly.

A really great love story has to be about people who feel utterly real—people who we come to care about and root for. People who need each other desperately and who spend a whole book figuring out how to get together.

If the details of that story are predictable? If the characters say the same things you see over and over, and they do the same things, and they go to the same places—and it all just feels overdone and cliché and fake? That’s a bad love story.

So there’s a good predictable in a love story (the ending and the time-honored tropes), and there’s a bad predictable (everything else) . . . and the problem is that nobody ever specifies.

Which one is it? Is the ending predictable? Because that’s a good thing! Or is the dialogue predictable? Because that is most definitely not.

Let’s just ditch ‘predictable.’ altogether. Even when you mean it “in a good way,” it doesn’t sound good.

Let’s talk about anticipation.

More important than saying a rom-com book had a happy ending is letting us know whether or not it built properly toward that ending. Did it stair step its way up higher and higher toward a frenzy of love-longing? Did it zig-zag your heart all around until it cracked the armor around it so you could truly feel all the feelings? Did it make you desperately, madly, salivatingly want these two people to get together—and then blissfully give you that very thing?

That’s worth mentioning.

But that’s not “predictable.” That’s creating a fantastic feeling of anticipation. And it’s not easy to do.

The central question in a rom-com is never “will they or won’t they?” Because they will. They definitely will!

The central question is how much will we all enjoy the ride.

And the answer to that is never predictable.

The Rom-Commers is both unlike anything I’ve ever read and at the same time, was simmering with this underlying vein of familiarity that stayed ‘til the very last word. There’s something cosy, warm and moving about this story of a young amateur screenwriter who’s talented but pushed to a corner in life, who then gets something of a break when asked to work with her favourite (and very famous) screenwriter.

The Rom-Commers reads like an interesting and perfect blend between a book and a movie. The author has, somehow, pulled in elements you’d find in a movie and tied those with the aspects you’d find in a book and managed to pull it off. The best kind of books are those that play on the back of your mind until you finish them; so any quick break you need to take from them only further fills your mind about them. The Rom-Commers was one of those books for me and perhaps that’s why I finished this book in nearly one sitting.

I would describe Center’s book as a heavily character driven narrative. Written in single person perspective, The Rom-Commers delves into the psyche, circumstance and life of Emma Wheeler, the FMC of this story. With humour, anxiety, courage, and emotion, Emma draws the reader in with every single thought in her mind, telling her story in a non-linear fashion that works with a charm that I’ve found only in some other romantic comedies I’ve read thus far. Her story is tinged with a note of sadness and pain that you can’t look past, even before you discover the reason for it. However, her voice is coated with grit, smart quips and a strong sense of duty that will touch your heart without doubt.

The MMC, Charlie Yates, was a wonderful character to watch interact with our heroine. The book—almost like a movie here—showcases a bunch of snippets of their interactions; each one building on its predecessor until there’s almost a beautiful canvas of friendship painted before the reader. One of my favourite tropes in a book is watching two strangers becoming friends and then something more and The Rom-Commers truly hit the mark for me on that front. Another aspect of this book that stood out to me was watching the main characters interact with one another with what’s-evident-to-the-reader as an imbalance in power (work experience-wise) and how beautifully that was handled. This encapsulates a large part of the first half of the book.

It took me by surprise that there were quite a few secondary characters in this story. The surprise was because I didn’t realise it; as each and every one of them was so well defined and fit so wonderfully in their roles, it never felt like there were too many. I would say they were definitely props in their own way to the primary characters and their story (I mean, who isn’t?), but they bring their own little something to their scenes that’s hard to miss or forget. There’s lots of interesting relationships that The Rom-Commers has, from siblings to exes, to friends and rivals and the characters working with and around them is an equally important part of their journey in this book.

The plot of this story is as simple as it’s complex. Just like any other book in it’s genre The Rom-Commers is about two very unlikely people finding out just how likely they are to never want to spend another day without the other. This, of course, is an over-simplification of any rom-com. The emotional complexities that make them who they are, the circumstances and fears that pull them apart, the traumas and vulnerabilities that bond them and how all this is written is what makes or breaks any book. There were many of these in The Rom-Commers and the way some of them squeeze your heart…you may not be ready for.

Center did a fantastic job creating, developing and nurturing the many plot threads that make this book what it is. I followed each and every thread with anticipation, sometimes fear and most times excitement and couldn’t wait to see where they would lead us. The pace at which all these threads drag us along is wonderfully even—dare I say, fast—and builds with the promise of a mighty conclusion. However, this is the only place for me that the book felt like a movie in a way that didn’t work 100% for me. Like in a movie, there were some gaps in the way some things were resolved. Big fights or drastic decisions that dredge up a lot of past trauma sometimes fell a little on the side of swift resolution that bordered on not being dealt with, both internally by the character and externally within relationships.

However, what I’m very grateful for is a good parent representation that I will forever hold close to my heart. The Rom-Commers is a sweet clean romance with lots of fluff, however it deals with many difficult topics including, but not limited to, emotional trauma and major health struggles that I hadn’t realised was a part of it. It’s no secret I’ve always loved romantic adventurous stories. Half of the TV shows or movies I watch usually fit this genre. I consider it the perfect blend. After all, what’s not to like? Action, romance, comedy? You can’t go wrong! Put them all together and you’re bound to be entertained. It’s the same thing with books, so if you’re like me, I’ve put together some of my favorite reads that I think you should try:

The Bodyguard by Katherine Center

This lighthearted read flips the script and has the woman protecting a famous male celebrity. In order to best protect him though, she has to pretend to be his girlfriend, so if you like the fake-dating trope, put this one at the top of your list. There’s plenty of action too, as Hannah (the main character) tries to protect Jack (the hero) from his stalker. The funny moments hit just right and none of the stakes ever get so serious that you feel like you need a break. It was also a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee, so I’m not the only one who thought it was great.

Soulless by Gail Carriger

This is the first in the Parasol Protectorate series, and I’ll admit, when I first heard what it was about, I was skeptical. Vampires and werewolves in a reimagined steampunk Victorian England? It seemed so far-fetched and I usually read more contemporary books. But I do love adventure rom-coms and it came recommended.

This series is worlds of fun. It never takes itself seriously,  pokes fun at society and always leaves you wondering what will happen next. The main character Alexia Tarabotti has no soul and this gives her a unique ability that no one else has. I’ll let you read the book to learn more, but I admired Gail Carriger for the way she was able to blend not only action and romance but also multiple genres as well.

To Have and to Heist by Sara Desai

Who doesn’t love a good heist novel? And when you do that heist in the middle of a wedding, with a ragtag crew that is keeping secrets? That’s the stuff dream books are made out of. I loved reading about Jack and Simi, the two main characters, as they fell in love, but where this book really shines is its humor. You won’t be able to stop laughing. Trust me.

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton

If I could describe this book in one word and one word only, it would be “witty”. This book is a romping good time. Cecilia is a Victorian lady, but she’s also a thief and pirate. This is another book that straddles genres and does it marvelously. There’s plenty of action and humor (flying houses anyone?), lots of romance (I adored Cecilia and Ned together), and overall felt like everything was perfectly paired to keep me entertained.

Something Wilder by Christina Lauren

Written by Christina Lauren, the pen name for writing duo Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, Something Wilder is the story of Lily who takes tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah, using her absentee father’s maps as a guide. And then one day her ex shows up with a bunch of his friends in tow, and everything about the trip goes completely sideways (that’s where the action comes in. And the romance). Maybe I love this story so much because I currently live in Utah and I could imagine the red rock canyons vividly, or maybe it was the Indiana Jones vibes, but this one was such a charmer.

The Takedown by Carlie Walker

With my latest book being about a CIA operative, you knew I had to include at least one spy rom-com on this list, didn’t you? This one is Christmas themed, which makes it super fun for the holidays. Sydney Swift is a CIA officer who is sent home at Christmas to investigate her sister’s new criminal fiancé. But Johnny, the fiancé in question, has a handsome bodyguard named Nick. As Sydney and Nick grow closer, Sydney has to dodge her family and the bad guys. I loved the banter, the way it stayed light while still having action and suspense, and of course, the romance. Make sure you pick this one up!

Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura

If you liked the movie The Lost City, you need to pick up this book. It also gives off Indiana Jones vibes with a character that is a lot like Laura Croft from Tomb Raider (that’s a lot of movie references, I know, I’m sorry). Basically, if you like archeological women who know their stuff, mixed with romance and adventure? This book is for you. There’s a lot of witty banter between Corrie and Ford, who are two rival archeologists on the same dig site. Popular tropes in this one to consider are, only one tent, rivals to lovers, and rule-follower vs rule-breaker.
