We chat with co-authors Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige about The Monarchs, along with writing, book recommendations, and more!

Hi, Danielle and Kass! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourselves?

KM: In addition to being a writer, I’m also a book editor! So I essentially have two full-time jobs. It’s a lot but who can complain about having TWO dream jobs?! I grew up in NY and California and currently live in Brooklyn. I love horseback riding, hiking, inventing new cocktails, biking, petting strangers’ french bulldogs, and people-watching at coffee shops. I have a Master’s degree in Victorian Literature though I’m not sure I would’ve finished all those novels if Twitter and Instagram had existed when I was in grad school.

DP: I live in NY but I have spent most of the pandemic down the Jersey Shore with my fiancé. I share Kass’ love for coffee shops and people watching and cocktails and I love television and film and fashion and art. I love to draw and paint. Art was my minor in college. I got my start as a writer in soaps. I wrote for Guiding Light and Days of Our Lives. It was the absolute best/most fun entryway into the world of writing and taught me so much about the business of writing. It also taught me that I can (and anyone can!) write just about anything. I love trying new genres and new mediums – I am so lucky to have gotten to write television, comics and novels. I love being a writer, but this year I am desperately missing getting to see our readers.

Welcome to 2022! What are you hoping the year will bring?

KM: I’m hoping we get a handle on the pandemic and keep American democracy from collapsing. I’d also like to learn to bake.

DP: I want us all to be happy and healthy, physically, emotionally and politically! Also, learning to bake. I made chocolate chip cookies and a key lime pie from scratch last month. Who are we, Mallory?

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

KM:

First book—The Twits by Roald Dahl

Book that made me want to be an author—Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Book I can’t stop thinking about—My Year of Rest and Relaxation

DP:

First Book: Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tales.

Book that made me want to be an author : Great Expectations.

The Monarchs, which is the sequel to The Ravens, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

KM: Glamorous, twisted, irreverent, romantic, magical

DP: Sorority. Witches. Save. The. World?

What can readers expect in the final installment in the duology?

KM: Darker magic, bigger spells, rival sororities, more elaborate costume parties, creepier villains!

DP: Darker, scarier, sexier…

Can you tell us a bit about the challenges you faced while writing and how you were able to overcome them?

KM: The backstory for the villain took a while to iron out but our editor, Laura, pitched us a MIND-BLOWING twist that made everything fall into place. Hooray for editors!

DP: Not getting to see Kass for the entirety of this process except on screen! I miss you, Kass. Thank goodness for Zoom. I still want us to go an our epic tour someday. Maybe there will be a Ravens, Part 3?

Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

KM: Our witch sorority throws an Alice in Wonderland-themed party and it was SUPER fun to imagine how they’d use their magic to bring it to life. I wish I could hire a witch party-planner in real life.

DP: Creating a new villain with Kass. I can’t tell you who.

What’s next for the both of you?

KM: I have to fix the “e” key on my computer before I can start writing a new book. That one turns out to be rather essential.

DP: My fairy godmother origin story, The Wish of the Wicked is out end of the year. And I am working on another DC Comic and an audio script with my fiancé (late night writer, Chris Albers.)

Lastly, do you have any 2022 book recommendations for our readers?

KM: This Might Get Awkward by Kara McDowell

DP: Once Upon a Heartbreak by Stephanie Garber

Post contributed by Catherine Lowe

Lovers of young adult fantasy novels may expect Kass Morgan’s and Danielle Paige’s The Ravens to follow the lines of other YA fantasy novels in the genre. However, readers will be pleasantly surprised that this thrilling young adult is much more than a story of sorority sisters that happen to be witches. The Ravens proves to be a heart-racing tale of love, sisterhood, friendship, and betrayal.

The first in The Ravens series, the novel follows the stories of Vivian Deveraux and Scarlett Winters as they navigate a new semester at Westerly College in Savannah, Georgia. Vivi, a freshman who has been stuck fleeing from an unseen enemy with her seemingly deranged mother, is happy to begin a new life away from the chaos at home. However, once Vivi crosses the threshold of the elusive Kappa Rho Nu sorority house everything changes. For Scarlett, this semester is one in the same with only one major difference—Kappa’s search for who will replace their current president, Dahlia, when she graduates from Westerly in the spring. Becoming president of Kappa is everything that Scarlett has been working toward, especially since her sister and mother were both presidents of the sorority when they went to Westerly years before. When Scarlett’s and Vivi’s worlds collide when Vivi is given a bid to the Kappa sorority, strange things start happening to each of the girls and an unknown entity lurks in the darkness waiting to snatch each of the Kappa witches up.

There are many enjoyable aspects to The Ravens, one of them being the spitfire character that Vivi is through her sarcastic humour and headstrong personality. Vivi carries much of the novel through the different predicaments the finds herself in including fooling around with a boy that is particularly off limits. Scarlett, on the other hand, provides much insight to the values and traditions that Kappa Rho Nu believes in and prides themselves on. Another strength that is present are the descriptions of the scenery. From Westerly’s campus to the elaborate parties at Kappa House, Morgan and Paige are able to paint a whimsical picture of the magic that The Ravens has to offer.

There are many aspects that readers may enjoy, one of them being the diversity among the novel’s characters. From Scarlett being an African American main character, to other people of colour from across the world being included in this novel pushes the fact that anyone could pick up this book and find someone they can relate to. Several secondary characters represent minorities as well, especially two witches, Juliet and Jess, who are in a committed relationship. The way these people from different walks of life are represented and accepted in the Kappa Rho Nu sorority is so important for young readers to be aware of and the different events that happen to all of the characters in The Ravens will push readers to continue turning the pages.

While the majority of the novel was fast-paced and filled with the mystery surrounding Westerly’s campus, some scenes leave more to be desired. The magic that comes to the sisters of Kappa Rho Nu is merely explained through generations of witches and tarot cards, which may leave readers questioning how a witch may discover her powers. Additionally, it is mentioned several times throughout the novel that the Kappa sorority is the most exclusive on Westerly’s campus. With knowing that, it would be helpful for readers to know what the other students thought of the Kappa sisters for some perspective of their life on campus.

Overall, The Ravens is a spectacular read for those looking to find a novel with good representation, humour, magic, and just the right amount of horror during the fall and winter seasons.

The Ravens is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

Synopsis | Goodreads

From New York Times best-selling authors Kass Morgan and Danielle Paige comes a thrilling, dark contemporary fantasy about a prestigious sorority of witches and two girls caught up in its world of sinister magic and betrayals.

At first glance, the sisters of ultra-exclusive Kappa Rho Nu—the Ravens—seem like typical sorority girls. Ambitious, beautiful, and smart, they’re the most powerful girls on Westerly College’s Savannah, Georgia, campus.

But the Ravens aren’t just regular sorority girls. They’re witches.

Scarlett Winter has always known she’s a witch—and she’s determined to be the sorority’s president, just like her mother and sister before her. But if a painful secret from her past ever comes to light, she could lose absolutely everything . . .

Vivi Devereaux has no idea she’s a witch and she’s never lived in one place long enough to make a friend. So when she gets a coveted bid to pledge the Ravens, she vows to do whatever it takes to be part of the magical sisterhood. The only thing standing in her way is Scarlett, who doesn’t think Vivi is Ravens material.

But when a dark power rises on campus, the girls will have to put their rivalry aside to save their fellow sisters. Someone has discovered the Ravens’ secret. And that someone will do anything to see these witches burn . . .

Eleanor & Park: A Novel by Rainbow Rowell
Goodreads

The relatability of two teens falling for each other over a mutual love of comics and The Smiths is a testament to Rainbow Rowell’s ability to tap into the teenage experience, where first loves are sweet, awkward, and all-consuming. Rowell’s young adult debut goes nicely with Green’s, launching them both into superstardom among teens.

Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Sara Shepard and Nicola Yoon
Goodreads

Speaking of meet-cutes, here’s a whole slew of short stories about teens who seem almost destined for each other after being brought together serendipitously. Some of the biggest names in YA, from Nicola Yoon to Sara Shepard, contributed to this swoon-worthy collection.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Goodreads

How would you make the most of your last day on Earth? Part high school mystery, part poignant coming-of-age story, Lauren Oliver’s propulsive novel about a teen who is forced to live her last day over and over again (à la Groundhog Day) will surprise you. It’s a beautiful exploration of how we can be kinder to those around us — one that will make you think twice about the daily choices we all make.

Every Day by David Levithan
Desperately looking for a solution, the ark’s leaders send 100 juvenile prisoners back to the planet to test its habitability. Having always lived in space, the exiles find the planet fascinating and terrifying, but with the fate of the human race in their hands, they must forge a path into the unknown.

Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as the three prominent “mothers of Monterey.”

Catching a criminal often requires the authorities to get inside the villain’s mind to figure out how he thinks. That’s the job of FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench. They attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their damaged psyches. Along the way, the agents pioneer the development of modern serial-killer profiling. The crime drama has a strong pedigree behind the camera, with Oscar-nominated director David Fincher and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron among the show’s executive producers.

Intense grief has divided families and turned faith to cynicism, paranoia and madness, leading some of the traumatized to join the Guilty Remnant, a cultlike group. Kevin Garvey, a beleaguered police chief, must keep peace between townspeople and the cult, a task made tougher with concern about his kids. His daughter alternates between apathy and rebellion, and his wayward son befriends a charismatic prophet. “The Leftovers” is based on the best-seller by Tom Perrotta, who is one of the series’ executive producers.
