Director Zack Snyder is a filmmaker who seems to be either loved or hated. Getting his start in music videos, he soon moved over to directing feature films, and made waves in Hollywood for his thrilling action sequences and imaginative visuals. One of the only blockbuster “auteur” Directors, every film he makes has his own unique stamp on it. 

In December of 2023, Netflix will be releasing the first of a two-part science fiction epic titled Rebel Moon Directed, produced and written by Zack Snyder. Set in a dystopian universe, it follows a woman on a planet who is forced to fight an evil empire that has come to strip the planet of all its resources. She must take up arms and gather a team of mercenaries to fight for freedom and defeat the empire. The trailer that was released promised some cool action and sets, as well as the being “Full Snyder.” 

Now if you are not familiar with his work, now is the perfect time to catch up, here are five Zack Snyder movies to watch before Rebel Moon releases.

5. Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead was Zack Snyder’s grand return to cinema after a long hiatus after tragedy struck his family. It tells the story of a group of mercenaries who are hired to break into a zombie overrun Las Vegas and rob a casino vault before the government nukes the city. Of course, things do not go as planned, and they soon discover they have been sent in for more than just gold and cash. It stars Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell and Tig Notaro. If you enjoy bloody action horror movies, that are filled with tension and drama, yet still have a strong focus on characters and family, Army of the Dead will be for you!

4. Watchmen

In 2009 Snyder released his adaptation of the iconic graphic novel by Alan Moore, set in an alternet 1985. Watchmen followed a disbanded team of superheroes as they investigated a murder of one of their own. Widely considered one of the most influential comics of all time, the source material was thought for many years to be unfilmable. Snyder’s version of the story starred Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Billy Crudup, and many others. It brings the comic to life in all its R-rated glory, with tons of blood, sex, and nudity, while controversial at the time of release. The film has gained a huge cult following and is included on many “Best Comicbook Films” lists.

3. Man of Steel

Man of Steel was Snyder and Christopher Nolan’s ambitious reintroduction of Superman to the world, it takes the washed-out and realistic look from The Dark Knight and mixes it with high-octane action. Its cast is very good, seeing the likes of Amy Adam’s, Kevin Costner, Henry Cavill, and Michael Shannon. It’s not the Superman everyone expected but it really helped to showcase that Clark is not only a man, but a god as well. 

2. 300

The film that put Zack Snyder on the map, 300 is the loosely told true story of the 300 Spartans who fought the Persian invasion of Greece. It stars Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, and Michael Fasbender, it’s an epic action film with insane set pieces and now iconic one-liners. The film is also well known for being one of the first to be entirely CGI besides the actors. It’s filled with cool action scenes, blood, gore, and heroic speeches. It’s a celebration of freedom from tyranny and a perfect Saturday night movie! 

1. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Arguably Zack Snyder’s magnum opus, the director cut of 2017’s Justice League is a totally different movie than what the studio released in theatres. Bright to life by the largest fan campaign in Hollywood history its 2 hours longer, with close to a dozen new characters, the film is a glorious celebration of all things DC. It finishes the story started in Man of Steel and finally sees Clark Kent fully take on the mantel of Superman for the world, while also solidly showcasing DC Superheroes as today’s Greek Myths. Zack Snyder’s Justice League really feels like the culmination of Zack’s comic-book director career, it was also a landmark victory for artistic freedom and support for filmmakers being allowed to release their original visions.

The Justice League are the most well-known group of the DC universe and many have been waiting a long time for a Justice League to come to theatres, and luckily, it is almost here! With high anticipation for the film, many fans have been analysing trailers and thinking about what could possibly be lying ahead for the film and this has led to a few popular theories about what we may see!

Darkseid Will Be Introduced

This super-villain is common foe of Superman with a cameo Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 (1970) followed by his first full role in Forever People #1 (1971). Darkseid wants to conquer the world (like most villains) and to eliminate all superhumans. We already know he will eventually play a big role in the future DC films as it has already been confirmed that his servant, Steppenwolf, is the main villain of Justice League, so what’s to say Darkseid won’t make an appearance? Perhaps after the big fight scene we may learn if his arrival is impending.

Green Lantern Joins The Team

If you know even just a little about the Justice League, then you most likely know Green Lantern is a member and some believe it to be strange that he isn’t in the upcoming film. Green Lantern’s first appearance with the Justice League of America was in The Brave and The Bold #28 (released in 1960) and continued to be a member from then on. DC has announced that there will be a new Green Lantern and the film is scheduled to come out in 2020, although many fans think it would be a mistake to wait that long. However, with Aquaman, The Flash, and the often forgotten Cyborg making their first appearance with their origin stories coming later, it seems unlikely we will see him in this film.

A Tie Into The Multiverse

The CW’s The Flash and Arrow, alongside its growing list of spin-off television series, is known as the Arrowverse and it is connected to the multiverse. The multiverse is just an infinite number of realities that then have an infinite number of the DC superheroes, which is used to create different versions of the same characters and elements such as Clark Kent and Dark Clark Kent in The CW’s Smallville (2001-2011). All of this leads fans to think it will tie-in with the multiverse because of how Batman receives a warning from the Flash about the future. So potentially, this means we may see different versions of the main characters of the Justice League, which is always fun to see the actors play usually a darker version of themselves or portray the character with a different personality.

The Movie Will Represent The Flash and Flashpoint

Flashpoint is a popular DC comics storyline involving Barry Allen, or the Flash, going back in time and drastically altering the timeline of events causing the New 52 relaunch. Many say we have already seen a Flashpoint consequence in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, so we could very well see another occur in the Justice League movie. If we do see another consequence in the film, this could lead to a multitude of opened doors for this storyline.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl Will Make A Guest Appearance

Again, if you are familiar with Justice League, you may be aware there was a Justice Society of America before the Justice League of America. Hawkman and Hawkgirl were part of the JSA with Hawkman as their ‘leader’, so it would make sense for them to appear. In the trailer where we see the Amazons and Atlanteans battle it out against Darkseid’s Parademons, if you look closely you can see two figures with wings flying high in the sky, thus leading many to believe that they could be Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

The Movie Will Take Place In Two Different Realities

A large majority of the DC universe is set in alternate realities so it is highly likely DC will cross over between two in one movie, sooner or later, and perhaps it might be this movie. In the trailer released at San Diego Comic Con, we see the Batmobile chasing the Parademons, but then a few seconds later, the sky changes and it remains the same chase. Could it be that this film will take place in two alternate realities? Only time will tell!

The new trailer begins with Lois Lane dreaming of the dead Superman after the events of Batman v. Superman: Dawn od Justice, followed by a world in apparent chaos. Ben Affleck’s Batman says he has dreamed about the end of the world, so he gathers some familiar, and some new, heroes to aid him.

For those trying to keep track, this is the fourth trailer released for the film with the first dating back to San Diego Comic Con last year.

Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Ray Fisher (Cyborg) introduced the new trailer for Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, which finds the five lone heroes uniting in the face of a new danger. While Henry Cavill (Superman) was not in attendance, the trailer still teased Superman’s return after his in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The new trailer introduces us to the movie’s main villain, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) and features a return to Diana’s home of Themyscira where Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) and the rest of the Amazons come face-to-face with the film’s threat. It also promises many badass action sequences for each character, albeit not all the CGI is up to scratch as one might hope. As assumed, Ezra Miller’s Flash will be providing the comedic relief, which more than likely will be a downfall for the film if too many scenes are filled with his character’s trademark humour.

Let’s hope Justice League can learn a thing or two from the Wonder Woman film.

Everyone knows that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to meet Warner Brothers’ expectations for its box office and critical performances. Suicide Squad faired a tad better with the box office because the film had some positive word of mouth from audiences, which got rid of any negative feedback the film received from critics. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice reviewed a twenty-seven percent on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, while Suicide Squad received a twenty-five percent.

Generally, fans enjoyed both films with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice receiving a sixty-three percent audience score and Suicide Squad getting a sixty-two percent on Rotten Tomatoes. This pales in comparison to Wonder Woman, which has a ninety-two percent score on the Tomatometer and a ninety-one percent audience score from Rotten Tomatoes. While both Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($250 million budget and $873,260,194 worldwide box office gross) and Suicide Squad ($175 million budget and $745,600,054 worldwide box office gross) both made back their budgets and more with profits for the film, Wonder Woman ($149 million budget and $571,801,730 thus far in worldwide box office gross) eclipsed them in that area too.

So, can Wonder Woman truly change the reputation of the DC Extended Universe? Many critics have indicated their approval of this film, which seems to have changed the face of this cinematic universe. Bob Grimm of the Reno News & Review stated this was what the DC Extended Universe needed: “The DC Universe gets the blast of fun it sorely needed with Wonder Woman, a film that gets it right on almost every front, and features a performance from Gal Gadot that makes it seem the role was her birthright,” Grimm stated. Steve Persall, writing for The Tampa Bay Times, says the film gets right what every other DCEU film got wrong. “Not only Wonder Woman winning World War I, but director Patty Jenkins righting a DC Universe burdened by Batfleck and other less-than-super men.”

They are not the only ones calling Wonder Woman‘s praises. “The DC cinematic universe has up until now been wobbly at best, but there was a glimmer of promise in Israeli actress Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, whose brief appearance was the best thing about the lumbering, overstuffed ‘Batman v Superman,’” Matthew DeKinder, writing for the Suburban Journals of St. Louis, stated. It seems Wonder Woman has already been impressing critics. This has undoubtedly helped the Amazon princess’ solo journey and could it happen for Justice League?

Recently, the film lost its director and switched composers with only a few months before its release in November. Looking at the way the DCEU’s first films have faired, it seems one would think no because its previous films up until Wonder Woman have not been successful 100 percent. However, with the successful debut of the film focused on the princess of the Amazons, maybe the course correction DC undertook could lead it to its success. We will have to wait and see once November comes around to see Wonder Woman once more team up with her fellow Justice Leaguers.
