Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt for Jenn Bennett’s Always Jane, which is out now!

Eighteen-year-old chauffeur’s daughter Jane Marlow grew up among the domestic staff of a wealthy LA rock producer, within reach of bands she idolizes, but never a VIP. Every summer, Jane and her father head to the Sierras to work at the producer’s luxury lodge at Lake Condor—a resort town and the site of a major musical festival.

The legendary family who runs the festival are the Sarafians, and Jane’s had a longtime crush on their oldest son, Eddie—doltish but sweet. So when a long-distance romance finally sparks between them, she doesn’t hesitate to cross class lines.

But Jane’s feelings about Eddie are thrown into question after she returns to the lake and reconnects with his alluringly intense brother, the dark horse of her placid summer plans. A fellow lover of music—and hater of the game—Fen Sarafian has been ousted from the family and is slumming it at a vinyl record shop. He burns for Jane like a house on fire and will do anything to sabotage his older brother, even if it means taking a wrecking ball to a multi-million-dollar music festival. Or Jane’s heart.

I am pretty sure I wrote this in my last review of Jenn Bennett’s novel Serious Moonlight but really, this woman must have sold her soul to the devil. I just don’t understand how she could consistently write these charming, remarkable novels that keep me entertained but also make me question certain things I’ve always taken for granted. Honestly, Jenn, just tell us your secret. Please!

Anyways, let’s talk about the actual book.

This time around, we dive into the world of budding photographer Josie Saint-Martin, who has spent most of her life fleeing from one city to the next with her single mother. The Saint-Martin women are said to have been cursed when it comes to love and so far, Josie can’t help but agree. Everywhere they go, her mother leaves behind a trail of distraught men, forcing the both to up and leave. When the both of them return to their hometown, Beauty in Rhode Island, to run the family bookstore, Josie knows that it’s only a matter of time until her mother will make them relocate again and Josie is counting down the days.

For the first time ever, though, it’s not because of her mother. Josie has her own plans that will take her far away from this place – becoming an apprentice to her father, the famous photographer, to be exact. Cue the run-in with the resident bad boy, Lucky Karras, who used to be Josie’s childhood best friend and is now considered the outsider and most definitely not willing to let her go again. When fate puts the both of them together all these years later, sparks begin to fly and Josie has to ask herself whether fleeing town at the end of her senior year really is the right decision.

Chasing Lucky, like all of Bennett’s books, has the magical trifecta: atmospheric writing, a tension-filled will-they-won’t-they-storyline, and banter that will make you crack up.

To no one’s surprise, this book drew me in from the very first page when Josie talks about the Saint-Martin’s curse. Josie has her own plans on how to get out of this town and out of her mother’s difficult trysts with love and I was rooting for Josie all the way, from getting the internship with a magazine to develop her photography skills to getting out of Beauty where she was only seen as her mother’s daughter (read problematic) instead of the young, fierce woman she actually is. Her love for photography was also mirrored in the little excerpts at every chapter describing what she had photographed around Beauty and added a lot of nostalgia and whimsicalness to the story (I don’t know if there will be actual photos in the finished copies but that would be amazing!).

The love interest, Lucky, is mysterious and snarky but also kind and selfless. Taking the fall for Josie, he doesn’t care what the town thinks about him as long as Josie knows he is one of the good ones. There is a lot of back and forth between him and Josie (and I wouldn’t expect anything different from this author) but even though we all know these two lovebirds will get together, Bennett still manages to infuse the “chase” with tons of tension and anticipation. With uncanny and eccentric side characters, not to mention the fact that I am waiting for a spin-off on Josie’s mother’s wild years because that would be so interesting to read, this cast of characters just up and stole my heart.

Still, what I love most about this book is the atmospheric writing. It felt like I was right there with Josie in Beauty, watching tourists window-shop and sit in between the stacks of the St. Martin’s bookshop. Can you be homesick for a place you’ve never visited? Because that’s what I’m feeling when I think about Beauty, Rhode Island.

Charming as ever, Bennett dives into universal topics such as falling in love and trying to reconcile your family’s expectations with your own dreams for the future. With a deft hand for storytelling, Bennett proves once more why she is one of the most sought-out YA contemporary authors out there. A wonderful and emphatic YA romance perfect for long-time fans and those new to this author alike!

Synopsis | Goodreads

Budding photographer Josie Saint-Martin has spent half her life with her single mother, moving from city to city. When they return to her historical New England hometown years later to run the family bookstore, Josie knows it’s not forever. Her dreams are on the opposite coast, and she has a plan to get there.

What she doesn’t plan for is a run-in with the town bad boy, Lucky Karras. Outsider, rebel…and her former childhood best friend. Lucky makes it clear he wants nothing to do with the newly returned Josie. But everything changes after a disastrous pool party, and a poorly executed act of revenge lands Josie in some big-time trouble—with Lucky unexpectedly taking the blame.

Determined to understand why Lucky was so quick to cover for her, Josie discovers that both of them have changed, and that the good boy she once knew now has a dark sense of humor and a smile that makes her heart race. And maybe, just maybe, he’s not quite the brooding bad boy everyone thinks he is…

The Lady Rogue is a story about adventure, redemption, and forgiveness. Theodora “Theo” Fox is a seventeen-year-old girl recovering from a broken heart and harboring resentment towards her father who stashes her in fancy hotel rooms while he goes off on wild adventures. Ever since her mother passed away, her father will not let her tag along on his adventures to find anything and everything someone may pay him to find. Theo is upset about this when the book starts and is out doing something she shouldn’t when things seem to fall apart. When she gets back to her hotel the last person she expects is there, Huxley “Huck” Gallagher. The boy who broke her heart when he left without a word and there is more to that story that Theo learns a little later. Huck showing up throws Theo’s life into chaos and she finally gets to go on an adventure across Romania to find her father. She learns about her heritage, secrets that she was never privy to, and that all the things she thought were true—witches, magic, curses, etc.—were all real. And it’s up to her to come to terms with all she’s learn to save the ones she love most.

I enjoyed this book as it jumped right into the action with Theo being accused of stealing a ring she was photographing and her tutor leaving her stranded in Istanbul, stealing all of her money. I thought the action kept up from there and I found it hard to put the book down but after that, it seemed to slow and I had a hard time reading the rest of the book. It was slow going in the middle until Theo and Huck met the hermit, but I still thought it was a well-written story that perfectly interspersed history, magic, and adventure. I was so happy to learn more about Vlad Dracula, Romania’s—and surrounding countries—history, and some of the other myths that are floating around, plus the twist on the history and how Bennett interpreted it was quite enjoyable. The ending of this book was kind of a surprise for me as I did not put it together ahead of time and did not see Theo being the key to everything even though I probably should have. I loved the ending and how even though things worked out, Theo, Huck, and Richard did not come out unscathed.

I liked Theo as she is stubborn, fierce, loyal, brave, and intelligent. Sometimes that stubbornness had me wanting to throw my book but I could get behind her decisions. She was determined to save her father and no matter how scared she was or how difficult and hopeless the situation seemed she never gave up. She chased her father’s trail across Europe and she was willing to do whatever it took and I admired that. I liked Huck a lot too. He never shied away from saying he was scared or uneasy or unsure of their plans. He was loyal, sweet, and caring. It was clear that he cared for Theo and took his responsibilities to keep her safe seriously. He followed along with her plans even when he wasn’t sure about them and even when he was beyond frightened of what could happen. I also enjoyed the people Theo and Huck met along the way to finding Richard—Theo’s father. They met some characters who were instrumental in helping them figure out the mystery of the Vlad’s bone ring. I liked the twins and the hermit the most.

The Lady Rouge was fun read full of action and a touch of romance that did not overshadow the overall plot of the story. This book showcased female empowerment at its finest and Theo did not need anyone to save her. She was strong enough to find her father and rescue and him and herself when they got into a bind. Theo was a heroine I rooted for throughout the book even though she frustrated me at times. The Lady Rogue explores grief, familial histories, friendships, first loves, and father/daughter bonds all wrapped in adventure and a race against the clock to find answers. This was an engaging read that kept me engrossed everything I picked it up.

The Lady Rogue is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.

Synopsis | Goodreads

The Last Magician meets A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue in this thrilling tale filled with magic and set in the mysterious Carpathian Mountains where a girl must hunt down Vlad the Impaler’s cursed ring in order to save her father.

Some legends never die…

Traveling with her treasure-hunting father has always been a dream for Theodora. She’s read every book in his library, has an impressive knowledge of the world’s most sought-after relics, and has all the ambition in the world. What she doesn’t have is her father’s permission. That honor goes to her father’s nineteen-year-old protégé—and once-upon-a-time love of Theodora’s life—Huck Gallagher, while Theodora is left to sit alone in her hotel in Istanbul.

Until Huck arrives from an expedition without her father and enlists Theodora’s help in rescuing him. Armed with her father’s travel journal, the reluctant duo learns that her father had been digging up information on a legendary and magical ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler—more widely known as Dracula—and that it just might be the key to finding him.

Journeying into Romania, Theodora and Huck embark on a captivating adventure through Gothic villages and dark castles in the misty Carpathian Mountains to recover the notorious ring. But they aren’t the only ones who are searching for it. A secretive and dangerous occult society with a powerful link to Vlad the Impaler himself is hunting for it, too. And they will go to any lengths—including murder—to possess it.

The Last Magician meets A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue in this thrilling tale filled with magic and set in the mysterious Carpathian Mountains where a girl must hunt down Vlad the Impaler’s cursed ring in order to save her father.

The Lady Rogue is an upcoming YA fantasy by Jenn Bennett that has such an intriguing premise! She was kind enough to answer some questions from our writer, Teralyn, discussing her new novel, writing, and more.

Hi Jenn! Can you tell our readers a little about yourself?

I’ve been a writing fiction for about ten years, both for adults and teens. THE LADY ROGUE is my twelfth published book. I currently live outside of Atlanta, but I’ve moved around quite a bit; my father was in the U.S. Army, and I’ve spent a lot of time in Europe and the Far East. My background is in art. I wanted to be an Egyptologist when I was a kid. I paint. I draw. I sew. I write.

If you had to describe The Lady Rogue in five words, which words would you choose?

Lively. Mysterious. Adventurous. Romantic. Fun.

The Lady Rogue has such an intriguing premise! Can you tell us a little about the book?

My heroine, Theodora, finds out that her father—a wealthy treasure hunter who has been searching for a legendary ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler—has gone missing. She sets out across Romania with someone from her past, a boy named Huck, who she grew up with…and for whom she also developed feelings. Huck’s been out of her life for a year, but he’s the last person to have seen her father. Together they follow a series of clues that leads them into the Carpathians, where they follow both the legendary ring and her father’s trail.

Are there any secrets from the book (that aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?

Though the book is focused on the medieval warlord, Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Vlad Dracula, “son of the Dragon”—and more popularly seen as potential unproven inspiration for the fictional Count Dracula—there are no vampires with fangs and batwings flapping around in my book. However, my protagonists find themselves facing other unexplainable supernatural phenomena…

What was the inspiration for the story?

I’ve always been attracted to the 1920s and 30s, and I’m especially fond of films inspired by pulp fiction from that era, like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and especially The Mummy (1999) with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. I wanted to write something that captured that same kind of pulp sensibility: travel adventure, a mystery with supernatural elements, a bantering couple…lots of atmosphere and action.

What kind of research did you do for The Lady Rogue?

History books, old maps, train schedules from the time period, travel guides. Historians who were willing to answer my questions about Romania.

Chasing Lucky is your next novel (releasing April 2020). Can you tell us a little bit more about it?

I’m still writing it, so I can’t say much. Except that it’s a different setting for me—small town in New England. But I hope that readers who liked ALEX, APPROXIMATELY will feel like this its spiritual East Coast cousin…and maybe a bookend to my contemporary romances from the past few years.

And one final question: do you have any book recommendations for us?

I’ve been on deadline for the last two weeks, writing for twelve, sometimes sixteen hours a day, and I can say in all honesty that the last thing I’ve had time for is reading. But when I’m finished writing this book, it will likely be the first thing I do. I have two books on my bedside table: THE BEAR AND THE NIGHTINGALE and THE MAD WOLF’S DAUGHTER. I look forward to reading both!

The Nerd Daily contributor Mimi recently had the pleasure of getting to sit down with acclaimed YA contemporary author Jenn Bennett and talk about all things writing, book recommendations, and unique quirks!

Keep on reading to find out more about Bennett’s upcoming release Serious Moonlight, her first venture into YA historical fiction, and her writing process!

If you had to describe Serious Moonlight in five words, which words would you choose?

Awkward, family, mystery, independence, romance.

The protagonist of Serious Moonlight, Birdie, has a passion for detective stories and solving mysteries. Did you grow up with Nancy Drew and the like? What draws you in about detective stories?

I did grow up with Nancy Drew, yes, and I especially love historical mysteries like Amelia Peabody. But the mystery aspect of this book actually came from my mother’s love of mysteries. She’s always been an avid detective/mystery reader, so this was my small way of honouring that.

It’s undeniable that your books are filled with unique characters. How do you come up with their unconventional occupations and unusual traits?

I suppose I’m the original quirky character (artist, nomad, lover of all things weird), so I populate my stories with quirky people…because that’s what I know.

Which Hogwarts houses would you sort the protagonists of your novels into?

They’re all wildly different and would likely be sorted into different houses.

Out of all the characters you’ve created, who resembles you the most? Who is the most unlike you?

I probably have the most in common with Bailey from ALEX, APPROXIMATELY (love of old movies, love of museums, hatred of the beach)—or perhaps Lennon from STARRY EYES (goth tendencies). Least like me might be Birdie from SERIOUS MOONLIGHT.

What’s your favourite part about writing a book? And the least favourite?

There a moment that usually occurs when I’m about twenty or thirty percent finished with the book. It’s something I call the Golden Moment, when I suddenly realise what the book is all about. Unfortunately, it also sometimes means that I need to trash several weeks’ worth of writing and start over again…which is the part of writing I hate the most.

Tell us more about your writing process. How do you write a novel? Do you write chronologically or jump around in a story? Do you listen to music while writing?

I write chronologically and don’t understand writers who jump around. That makes no sense to my brain. I need absolute silence to write: no music, no busy coffee shop, no television in the background. I generally complete a first draft in about two months, and that means writing for six to twelve hours a day, every day, in order to meet my daily writing goals.

The publishing process is somewhat of a mystery. Was there anything that shocked or surprised you when your first book was picked up by a publisher?

Is it a mystery? I feel like now, more than ever, aspiring authors are banding together and helping each other through the submissions process, mentoring other writers. Social media chats. Websites that tell you how to query a book. Twitter advice from seasoned authors. Private Facebook groups. If you want to know how to break into publishing, the most important secrets you need to know are these: (1) write compelling stories and (2) don’t give up.

Any advice for any aspiring writers out there?

If writing is the most important thing in your life, find a boring day job that will keep you afloat and allow you time to write. Because it can take years to start earning enough money to live, and even then, nothing is guaranteed.

You’ve recently revealed that your next novel (The Lady Rogue, releases September 2019) will be set in 1930s Romania. Can you tell us a little bit more about it?

It’s about two teens who travel through Romania in search of the girl’s father, a treasure hunter who has disappeared while looking for a medieval ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler. This book has it all: travel on the Orient Express. Medieval Transylvanian castles. The Carpathians. Witches. Dangerous occultists. Magic. Cursed objects. Romanian folklore. And a forbidden, banter-filled romance.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for us?

I recently just finished UPROOTED by Naomi Novik, and it was an outstanding fairytale-esque YA fantasy.

Serious Moonlight hits shelves on April 16th and it will be available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.
