1347: Hannah and her village are starving to death in a brutal winter. Hannah seeks out food and salvation in the baron’s castle. If she is caught stealing, she will surely hang. But if she and her friends succeed, she’ll save everyone she holds dear.

NOW: Jordan isn’t sure what to believe, and Hannah has even bigger problems: if she doesn’t make it back, her sister will die, but if she keeps going back, she might never escape.

We’re thrilled to be revealing the cover for James Patterson’s City of the Dead, which is the sequel to Hawk, as well as an excerpt! Last year, Hawk, the story of Maximum Ride’s daughter coming into her own, spent 10 weeks on the New York Times bestseller’s list. The series continues with mother and daughter leading an unlikely revolution to independence and freedom for all humans — including those of us with wings. Releasing on November 29th 2021 from JIMMY Patterson, City of the Dead is available for pre-order.

In the City of the Dead, life happens in the shadows. That’s why a war is brewing against an enemy no one can see. Hawk and Maximum Ride never back down from a conflict, or from each other, and they argue more than they agree. But as the dead begin to outnumber the living, a mother’s experience and a daughter’s instinct can make one powerful arsenal.

Best Nerds Forever is James Patterson’s latest novel, which is co-written with Chris Grabenstein. It’s a brilliant and timely story unlike any other, as two teens meet for the first time in the afterworld to work through unfinished business on the other side. Full of life lessons and laughter for kids and adults.

We had the pleasure of chatting with the incredible James Patterson about this new middle grade release, as well as memorable books and learn he was told to stay away from fiction…

Hi, James! You certainly don’t need much of an introduction, so let’s go with what are three interesting facts readers might not know about you?

I love rock and roll. Was an usher at the Fillmore East. Went to Woodstock.

I have a cat named RedBoy.

I write every book with a pencil.

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

I really loved comic books as a little kid, and also Treasure Island, Peter Pan, and Lord of the Flies. In terms of books that made me want to become a writer, it’s hard to pick just one. I think each of these titles had a hand in shaping the kind of writer — and person, really — that I am. I read each of them at different times in my life, but they’ve all stuck with me.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth

Mrs. Bridge and Mr. Bridge by Evan S. Connell

Best Nerds Forever is your latest novel which you co-authored with Chris Grabenstein! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Insightful. Hilarious. Surprising. Adventurous. Unforgettable.

What can readers expect?

This story is truly unique in that it touches on some pretty serious topics through the eyes of a kid – which made for a fun writing experience. I think everyone has an inner “nerd” and this book celebrates what makes us different. I guarantee readers will be able to see themselves in the characters and their quirks – which (spoiler alert!) end up being their biggest strengths. Although this story is definitely a hilarious one, it also shines a light on how to overcome fear in times of uncertainty. I think kids and parents could use that right now.

What was the inspiration for Best Nerds Forever?

Everyone wonders what it would be like to travel to the afterlife and look at your friends and family from the outside in. My coauthor compared this book to the classic movie, It’s a Wonderful Life and I would agree. The inspiration came from learning to live each day to the fullest.

Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

There are some great moments when Finn first realizes all the things he can do as a ghost that he would normally get in major trouble for doing. He can stay up all night playing video games and sneak into ice cream shops to try every single flavor without getting caught- just really fun experiences to spark your own imagination and make you wonder what you would do as a ghost.

What’s the best and the worst writing advice you have received?

The most memorable advice I’ve received came from a creative writing professor when I was an undergraduate. He told me, “You write well enough, but stay away from fiction.”

But generally, my advice to all aspiring writers is outline, outline, outline!

What’s next for you?

My next middle-grade title, ALI CROSS: LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON goes on-sale next month. It is the upcoming book in the Ali Cross series and continues to follow Ali taking a step into his famous father’s footsteps as a genius detective.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

BECOMING MUHAMMAD ALI is a recent book I wrote with Kwame Alexander. It details the incredible childhood of Muhammad Ali, including his friends, struggles in school, and the racism he faced through prose and verse. It’s an important story all ages can learn from and appreciate.

The Vampire Academy and its spin-off Bloodlines also have a big set of characters, lots of drama, forbidden romances and very swoonworthy characters. It follows Rose Hathaway, the protector of Lissa Dragomir who is a vampire. Rose starts developing feelings for an older guardian and they are faced with a greater enemy. Bloodlines follows Sydney Sage who is an Alchemist. She has been brought up believing that vampires are evil, but when she is sent to protect the princess, she discovers that there is more to these ‘evil’ vampires.

If you were itching to get your hands on a new story set in the Maximum Ride universe, then look no further! It’s got action, teen rebellion, and of course you get to see some of your favourites from the original series again. Hawk is an interesting young woman, and I love the amount of promise this story showed. It’s a quick read, and I think that lovers of the Maximum Ride series will definitely enjoy getting into this world once again. If you’re easily triggered by violence, murder, and gore, this one might be one to read cautiously.

Maximum Ride saved the world ten years ago, but has since vanished without a trace. She’s a legend slowly fading away in stories. Meanwhile, Hawk is a young girl who doesn’t know anything about her past, only that she was abandoned by her parents at 5…with some instructions to wait on a street corner for an hour every day until they come for her. She survives by staying under the radar, until she’s forced to face destiny head on and the mission she’s on isn’t a rescue. It’s an execution.

The Maximum Ride series started when I was a teenager, and something that I have noticed since then is that they didn’t necessarily age well. It was definitely great for the market at the time, but I don’t know, maybe my tastes changed, but I just couldn’t get into it the way I did the first time. However, I don’t think you need to re-read the original series to start reading Hawk. This story definitely has an interesting beginning and builds up to some very explosive battles. Hawk herself is a very interesting character, and showed a lot of promise, but at times, her personality seemed to clash with what we had seen previously in the story. This was an issue for me personally because she’s had a hard life, making it difficult to trust many, but then later we see this turned on its head. I loved that she has a hawk named Ridley, and I genuinely wished to see more of the fierce bird throughout the book.

I want to be completely honest here, the pace of the book felt all over the place for me. There were very fast paced moments, where I was dying to turn the page, and others where it definitely felt like it took forever to get where we needed to go. It took me a few days to get through this book because of this and because I wasn’t really in love with the first person narration of the story. Having Hawk and Max act as narrators works well, but I definitely feel like this story would benefit from being told in a different perspective. There is a bit of a switch up at the end that I truly liked much better, and wished the whole story had been written this way because it gave readers a much bigger insight into the world and what’s happening.

Dialogue-wise, this story definitely felt like it was written for the teenagers (now adults), and doesn’t feel authentic to how teens would talk now. For the sake of argument, the story obviously isn’t taking place in today’s world but the slang and some of the conversations feel very disjointed and a little dated. I personally enjoyed them, but I don’t know how well a teenager could connect to this.

Speaking more to the characters, I did love certain dynamics going on between them, but I was honestly frustrated with a good portion of the book because of the questions that I wanted answers to. I didn’t feel the greatest about the parental relationship either because it didn’t get a chance to develop in a way that was good for the characters (I’m honestly not sure I’m making sense, but this was as close to an explanation I could get to).

Overall, this story did keep my attention, and I definitely wanted to find out how it ended. In comparison to the original Maximum Ride, I can’t say that it compares too well. Part of it is partially because of nostalgia, and the other part of it is because I just couldn’t connect as well to this story, which is a shame because I was very excited for it! However, that doesn’t mean that others won’t fall in love with it just as much as the original series.

Hawk is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

Synopsis | Goodreads

A story for a new generation of Maximum Ride fans! 17-year-old Hawk is growing up hard and fast in post-apocalyptic New York City . . . until a perilous destiny forces her to take flight.

Where is Maximum Ride?

Ten years ago a girl with wings fought to save the world. But then she disappeared.

Now she’s just a fading legend, remembered only in stories.

Hawk doesn’t know her real name. She doesn’t know who her family was, or where they went. The only thing she remembers is that she was told to wait on a specific street corner, at a specific time, until her parents came back for her.

She stays under the radar to survive…until a destiny that’s perilously close to Maximum Ride’s forces her to take flight. Someone is coming for her.

But it’s not a rescue mission.

It’s an execution.

The book opens with Billy mourning his wife, Siobhan’s death, along with the residents in their inn, in a small town. They’re a motley crew, but as the book progresses, it quickly becomes apparent that they’re more like family, brought together by Siobhan. Her loss affects them all and leaves a hole in their lives.

Billy’s grief is palpable and his method of grieving is to retreat into himself. However, when he discovers that a drug dealer has moved into their little town, and his reach has extended to the people in the inn, Billy decides to step up and protect the people he considers his own.

It is the people in the inn that make this book so compelling: Nick, the soldier back from Iraq who still has PTSD flashbacks, Susan the ex-FBI agent, and her friend Effie, whose throat has been cut so she can’t speak. There’s the ex mafia gentleman, the town Sheriff, and a doctor — and then there’s Marni. The young girl who Billy very much wants to step up for and guide more than anything.

Despite the large cast of characters, the book manages to give each character enough attention, background and all, while also drawing readers into their world and revealing more about them all and Billy too. The book’s focus is the action, with the characters working together seamlessly (and sometimes not so seamlessly) and revealing more about themselves in the process.

I almost feel like this is an action movie in the making, which honestly made it all the more interesting for me. Sometimes, you need the action, the speed with which things happen can be just as effective in building a story, supported by great characterisation.

The Inn is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.

A gripping stand-alone novel from the world’s bestselling thriller writer

Ex-Boston homicide detective Billy Robinson has retreated to a quiet life on the New England coast. Struggling to cope following the death of his beloved wife, he must now run the inn that Siobhan took care of so well.

The inn’s quirky residents help keep Billy on solid ground as he grieves, and the group soon become an unconventional family. But this small town is in the grips of a growing opioid epidemic, and when a young resident gets hooked into the crisis, Billy knows he must act to save the people in the inn that he has grown to care so much about.

With his secretive past in Boston catching up to him, can Billy survive long enough to save the town – and its beloved inn – from ruin?

Drawing inspiration from an actual kidnapping plot hatched in 1776 by a member of Washington’s own Commander-in-Chief’s Guards, Charles Rosenberg has written a compelling novel that envisions what would take place if the leader of America’s fledgling rebellion were taken from the nation at the height of the war, imperiling any chance of victory.

As Vera becomes more and more enmeshed with the young radicals, the fragile local government begins to split at the seams. When a betrayal leaves her stranded in the wake of a coup, Vera learns war makes for strange and unexpected bedfellows, and she’s forced to take extreme measures to save herself.

Then again, how well does she know them? When Jan awakens in utter darkness, chained to a wall, she desperately tries to reconstruct what happened and determine who is holding her prisoner.
