Here and Now is a provocative and darkly comic meditation on the disparate forces polarizing present-day American culture, as experienced by the members of a progressive multi-ethnic family — a philosophy professor and his wife, their adopted children from Vietnam, Liberia and Colombia and their sole biological child — and a contemporary Muslim family, headed by a psychiatrist who is treating one of their children.

When Alan Ball, the creator of the series, approached HBO, they asked if it was a family show or a supernatural show, to which he simply replied “yes”.

Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter play the idealistic couple who see themselves as “social justice warriors”. The couple adopts Duc (Raymond Lee); Ashley (Jerrika Hinton); and Ramon (Daniel Zovatto). The trio of adopted children are older siblings to the couple’s biological child Kristen (Sosie Bacon). But even as a close-knit family, there’s plenty of secrets, neuroses and trauma.

Over the course of the season, the series will focus on Ramon’s strange visions, which may lead to a metaphysical connection with his psychiatrist (Peter Macdissi) who’s dealing with his own personal issues.

The series stars Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption), Holly Hunter (The Big Sick), Jerrika Hinton (Grey’s Anatomy), Daniel Zovatto (Lady Bird), Raymond Lee (Mozart in the Jungle), Sosie Bacon (Thirteen Reasons Why), Andy Bean (Power), and Joe Williamson (Grey’s Anatomy).

The 10-episode season premieres February 11th at 9pm on HBO.
