But who decides who gets remembered? Which rebellions are quiet and which continue to echo? Which victors we do celebrate and which do we forget?

The dominant forces of empire, propaganda and cultural capital govern which stories are kept, which changed, diminished or burned. This is some of the story that I wanted to tell in Sunbringer, the second book in the Fallen Gods series. Where rebellion and text, pacifism versus violence, unrest versus suppression comes into the foreground.

This story has many precedents, ancient and more modern. For example, changing religious schema in medieval Europe and the influence of the papacy elevated certain religious texts and politicians and had others destroyed. “Heresy” was a campaign tool used to launch crusades not only in what is now called “the middle east”, but in France and Ireland, against cultures that challenged the status quo.

And this is even before we focus on the knowledge of and memorialisation of historical women, many of whom, under similar dogma, were written out of the narrative. Then, further colonialist expansion destroyed, ignored or outright lied about the histories of the cultures western Europe sought to dominate.

Now, historians like Archana Garodia Gupta in The Women who Ruled India and Janina Ramirez in Femina and are working to bring the stories and histories of women back to life.

No more unvisited tombs.

However, where there is absence and suppression comes invention as well. There is the history of our world, and then in fantasy the reimagining of our world through other lenses. This is the power of fantasy, to take inspiration from the real and twist it in a new and powerful way.

In this way, fantasy and speculative fiction reflects both who we are and who we could be through connecting to old stories and telling them new. My Fallen Gods trilogy is about faith and family and the corruption of power, but it is also about a refreshed, diverse and more vibrant reimagining of elements of European history.

Therefore, I will use this article to highlight historical women whose stories are less well known and, if you like the sound of their stories, fantasy books that may delight and intrigue you as well!

Rebel and Queen Amanirenas

After Cleopatra’s death, the Roman Empire stated its intention to move south into the Kingdom of Kush, present day Sudan. Amanirenas, their queen, struck first. After ransacking two cities, Rome retaliated brutally. Still, Queen Amanirenas continued to lead incursions against the Roman army till a peace was finally agreed, pinning Rome back in Egypt and halting their southern campaign.

What we know about this war from the Kush peoples themselves is very little, as much of their history has been lost or erased, but the story is one of a powerful woman leading rebellion against a larger empire, despite Strabo’s attempts that time to record a history more favourable to the Romans.

If you like stories about rebellion, altered histories and women against an empire, I would recommend The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi. It’s one of my favourite books depicting the pain and danger of rebellion and its impact on the rebels, while also taking inspiration from Ghanaian, Sudanese and other African histories.

Pilgrim and Mystic Margery Kempe

Written in the 1430s, one copy of the autobiographical Book of Margery Kempe survives, discovered in 1934 in a private library while the owners were looking for ping pong balls. We have few insights into the minds of women from the middle ages, and even fewer from those of the merchant and middle class (even fewer to none of working class). Margery travelled thousands of miles, at great personal risk, to make pilgrimages to holy sites and then returning to King’s Lynn to terrorise her neighbours with her visions. Margery’s self-advocacy and independence is astonishing, and so is its survival through the purges of the English Reformation and the changing role of women in Christian Europe.

It is only in the last century that we’ve learned more about the role and power of women in the middle ages, unpainting the role they have been put in as quiet, meek and put upon.

If you like the story of Margery Kempe, I would recommend For thy Great Pain Have Mercy on My Little Pain, by Victoria Mackenzie, where Margery’s story is reimagined and recreated in mirror with another medieval woman: Julian of Norwich.

Philosopher and adviser to monarchs: Hypatia

Hypatia was a philosopher in Alexandria, one of the first whose lives were fairly well recorded. She advised Alexandrian prefects, counselling for tolerance between Christian and ‘pagan’ beliefs, being pagan herself. She wrote commentaries on mathematical and astronomical treaties, though her own works have long been lost in the preservation of and translation of Alexandrian texts after the city declined.

However, her influence gained her enemies as well as friends, and was killed in a horrendous attack by a Christian mob. Since, Hypatia’s story has been wrung out of her own hands, adapted and adopted into Christian sainthood as Catherine of Alexandria.

If Hypatia’s story is of interest, you may enjoy Sunbringer, the sequel of the Fallen Gods trilogy. The story takes us back to Lesscia, the city of knowledge, where the archivists fight to preserve the legacy of their history, and their god.

AMONG THIEVES by M.J. Kuhn

This high-stakes fantasy heist novel is positively chock-full of trickster-type characters. Like many a heist novel, this crew is out to make the score of a lifetime. Unlike many, every single member of the crew goes in planning to betray the others. Readers will have their pick of morally grey rascals to root for: from the slightly bumbling Tristan, an assassin with a surprising secret, to the terrifyingly and shark-like Callum. This multi-point of view tale is intricately plotted and makes for a fast-paced page turner that will have you immediately grabbing for book two.

LOKI by Melvin Burgess

What list of books featuring morally questionable characters would be complete without an appearance by the original trickster himself, Loki? Burgess’s debut into the adult space, LOKI has something of an experimental and quasi-autobiographical feel to it. Sharply funny, Loki paints a portrait of Norse mythology that is rife with intensely human-like gods and a Valhalla that doesn’t seem quite so heavenly as we’ve been led to believe. This book is a fantastically weird take well-known source material, with a voice that will leave you laughing. 

Bonus Reading! The Old Kingdom Series, by Garth Nix

Okay, so this one is a deep cut (hence the bonus entry), but can we all just remember how cool Mogget is? First appearing in SABRIEL, and returning many times since, Mogget is introduced as a talking cat begrudgingly bound to serve the line of Abhorsens—necromancers tasked to put down the dead. But Mogget isn’t a docile house pet, he’s more like a fallen god/demon in disguise. And in Mogget, Nix just spells out what we are all thinking: all tricksters are cats at heart. Though Mogget may serve the Abhorsens, and might be wooed with promises of fish, only a fool would test that theory by removing his collar.

Hi, Hannah! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hello! I grew up in the countryside in the north of England, and now live in Edinburgh in Scotland by a river. My pronouns are she/her, and I’m queer, in love, and have been writing since I knew how to hold a pencil.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I’ve been making stories for longer than I can remember. From climbing trees and conversing with the faeries, fancy-dressing adventures (and forcing friends and family to play along), to waging war with swords on my cousins. I consumed books like they’d turn to smoke in my hands, and was notorious for telling tales. It was only the next step for me to begin to write them down.

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

This would be like trying to find a piece of hay in a haystack. My parents used to read to me, Edward Lear’s nonsense poems, my dad would go wild with the voices.

Maybe the first book I remember reading was because it got me in trouble. I took a book from the upper class’s bookshelf rather than the nursery, maybe The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper? Still one of my favourites. Of course, I would have struggled with it, but I knew a few words, and I got a right telling off from my teacher. I remember the absolute terror and fury that I wasn’t allowed to just. . . read a book? My parents were told, it was a whole thing. I think that inspired me to write more than anything else, because I felt that I was stuck with stories I didn’t want I would write my own.

Your debut novel, Godkiller, is out September 12^th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Big, badass woman kills gods.

What can readers expect?

The story is a quest at its core, because I love a quest and the fellowship that comes from it. You get to move through a world and explore it with our chracters. The world itself is varied and complex, queer norm and gender equal, and it has a strong theme of found family, love, faith and resilience.

Where did the inspiration for Godkiller come from?

I wanted to write a book in the tradition of older fantasy books, but write it fresh. And at its core I wanted to write a powerful, difficult woman. The position of women, womxn, and tran women in this world is under constant threat; our bodies, our lives, our pay, and our pain is under scrutiny, and every corner we turn could contain danger.

This comes out in many fantasy books as well, where women and queer folks are often threatened with assault, imprisonment and isolation. I wanted to write a book with a queer woman at its core who was exactly who she was, and had no reason to be afraid. I wanted her to be irreverent, and unmovable, and what’s more irreverent than killing gods? So the book was born from these thoughts.

However, there’s a lot more inspiration in the bedrock: the trade routes around Arabic, Mediterranean, African and North European empires, the medieval cult of the saints, the capricious and brutal gods of Greek, Roman and Celtic folklore, and traditions of storytelling.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I love the gentle moments, like havens in a storm. Where folks gather around a campfire and break bread, or swim under the stars, and all the threat of the world falls for a moment away. I think this is where you see the real heart of people, and are so important to the warmth of the text.

On the other side of the equation, the moments of betrayal are both brutal and delightful to me. I can’t say which specific one(s) without spoiling, but those moments where the world falls out from under a character’s feet are so interesting to write and explore.

And, finally, my favourite scenes are the delicious combinations of sex and fighting. Apparently I’m unusual in some author groups because I just love a fight scene, perhaps because I’ve dabbled in martial arts over the last thirteen years, and have an interest in historical military strategy. For me, both love and fight scenes are such an intimate clash or combination of wills; a meeting; a dance. 

Can you share with us a little teaser for Sunbringer, the sequel to Godkiller?

If Godkiller is A New Hope, then Sunbringer is The Empire Strikes Back. I take everything I have made out of the characters in book 1, and then I make them all worse.

What’s next for you?

Inevitably, the third book in the trilogy, which is yet to be named. I’m also interested in exploring a trilogy about the darker sides of war, a kind of fantasy Fullmetal Jacket… but we’ll see.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Always. If you like sweeping, speculative fiction with a love story at its centre, I loved The Surviving Sky by Kritika H Rao, or something more of an epic and brutal fantasy adventure, I’ve got to say The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi. They’re the kind of books that remind you why you love reading so much.
