The Queen of Days released on 24 October 2023 and it’s an epic adventure that weaves together a flawed-but-lovable family of thieves, a battle between fallen gods, and stakes high enough to cause vertigo.

The allure of the trickster is always rooted in the will-they-won’t-they pull of right versus wrong. It’s what makes watching the new Loki series so irresistible. It’s not just the gleefully mischievous mayhem wrought by Asgard’s second son, but also the question of whether he will ever manage to do the right thing. And the secret hope that he will keep skipping gleefully into the shadows. So, if morally grey is your favorite color, read on to find five books that might scratch that trickster itch.

THE BLACKTONGUE THIEF by Christopher Buehlman

Kinch Na Shannack is no one’s idea of a hero. Deeply indebted to the Taker’s Guild that trained him, he makes the ill-fated choice to steal from a lone woman on the road. Except the woman is a knight on an epic journey across monster-infested lands and Kinch is going to help her whether he wants to or not. Delightfully irreverent and brimming with all the banter you could ever hope for, THE BLACKTONGUE THIEF is an instant classic that had me laughing out loud time and again.

GODKILLER by Hannah Kaner

The world of GODKILLER is rife with gods, but that doesn’t make them welcome. Or invincible, thanks to godkillers like Kissen. But when Kissen discovers that Skedi, the God of White Lies, has bonded himself to a young girl named Inara, Kissen finds herself unable to do her job. For a God of White Lies, Skedi’s point of view chapters reveal him to be surprisingly devoted to young Inara, and the mystery of how they became connected will keep you turning pages. In addition to some unique worldbuilding, this fantasy quest story also has some major Witcher vibes thanks to the friendship that grows between Kissen and Inara. This is a highly unique tale and a must-read for those who enjoy books with no easy answers.

ONCE UPON A BROKEN HEART by Stephanie Garber

Calling all YA readers! When broken-hearted Evangeline makes deal with Jacks, the Prince of Hearts, to stop her boyfriend’s wedding, you just know things are going to end badly. Garber fans will recognize Jacks from the CARAVAL series, but by some mysterious authorial alchemy, the often-villainous, always untrustworthy, and occasionally heroic Jacks becomes someone that you want to root for. Just don’t think you can ever guess what he will do next. Or why.

AMONG THIEVES by M.J. Kuhn

This high-stakes fantasy heist novel is positively chock-full of trickster-type characters. Like many a heist novel, this crew is out to make the score of a lifetime. Unlike many, every single member of the crew goes in planning to betray the others. Readers will have their pick of morally grey rascals to root for: from the slightly bumbling Tristan, an assassin with a surprising secret, to the terrifyingly and shark-like Callum. This multi-point of view tale is intricately plotted and makes for a fast-paced page turner that will have you immediately grabbing for book two.

LOKI by Melvin Burgess

What list of books featuring morally questionable characters would be complete without an appearance by the original trickster himself, Loki? Burgess’s debut into the adult space, LOKI has something of an experimental and quasi-autobiographical feel to it. Sharply funny, Loki paints a portrait of Norse mythology that is rife with intensely human-like gods and a Valhalla that doesn’t seem quite so heavenly as we’ve been led to believe. This book is a fantastically weird take well-known source material, with a voice that will leave you laughing.

Bonus Reading! The Old Kingdom Series, by Garth Nix

Okay, so this one is a deep cut (hence the bonus entry), but can we all just remember how cool Mogget is? First appearing in SABRIEL, and returning many times since, Mogget is introduced as a talking cat begrudgingly bound to serve the line of Abhorsens—necromancers tasked to put down the dead. But Mogget isn’t a docile house pet, he’s more like a fallen god/demon in disguise. And in Mogget, Nix just spells out what we are all thinking: all tricksters are cats at heart. Though Mogget may serve the Abhorsens, and might be wooed with promises of fish, only a fool would test that theory by removing his collar.

The post 5 Books To Read If You Love A Good (Or Not So Good) Trickster appeared first on The Nerd Daily.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Greta Kelly about The Seventh Queen, along with inspiration, book recommendations, and more!

Hi, Greta! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I’m Greta Kelly, author of adult fantasy novels: THE FROZEN CROWN and THE SEVENTH QUEEN. When I’m not reading or writing, you can probably find me watching Critical Role, knitting something terribly misshapen or cooking with an overly-helpful kid or two. I currently live in Wisconsin with my husband EJ and our daughters, Lorelei and Nadia, who are doing their level-best to take over the world.

As the year draws to a close, how has 2021 been for you?

This year has been utter madness! Not only did I publish two books this year, but my youngest, Nadia was born in January (the day after THE FROZEN CROWN debuted!) Nedless to say, I’ve had my hands full figuring out how to fit writing as a career in between diaper changes and nap times… don’t ask me when I showered last. But I still can’t believe the year is almost over. As the saying goes, the days are long but the years are short.

When did you first discover your love for writing?

It really wasn’t until High School. I had a tight-knit group of really creative friends and we were absolutely obsessed with the Aborhsen series by Garth Nix and Harry Potter and we all just had to start writing stories of our own. It’s a passion that I haven’t been able to shake.

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

First Book: GONE WITH THE WIND. Sounds odd, and it is, but I was very dyslexic as a child and so reading was a huge struggle for me. I vividly remember the summer before sixth grade thinking that there was no way I was going to middle school being the kid that couldn’t read. So I grabbed the biggest book I could find, and it was GONE WITH THE WIND. And I hated every word. But I got through it.

Book that made you become an author: There are many, many books that made me want to become an author, but one of my favorites among them was THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J Maas. I speed read that book on my phone at work and by the time I got to the end, I just remember thinging, what am I waiting for?

Book I Can’t Stop Thinking About: A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES by Deborah Harkness. Witchy fall vibes. Academia. Magic. Romance. Need I go on?

Your new novel, The Seventh Queen, which is the sequel to The Frozen Crown, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Warrior witch gets her revenge.

What can readers expect?

THE SEVENTH QUEEN picks up right after the…intense… ending of THE FROZEN CROWN. Askia is surrounded by enemies, and with her own magic all but useless, she knows there is no rescue coming. But Askia’s no damsel in distress. She’ll save her own damned self, or die trying. Either way, Radovan is going down.

Where did the inspiration for The Seventh Queen come from?

I dedicated this book to my daughters, not only because I love them, but because they are the ones who inspired me most. Unsurprisingly, I’ve been thinking a lot about the world they’re inheriting and the messages they’re receiving about who and what they are allowed to be. Pretty or strong, smart or funny. Always or never and. Then it hit me—what an opportunity I had with this book because there are so many female characters. Through characters like Askia and Ozura and Qaden you see women who are strong and intelligent, firecly loyal and extremely flawed. But they are never just one thing.

Can you tell us a bit about the challenges you faced while writing and how you were able to overcome them?

Lets see here… While writing this book, I moved three times, changed careers, and had two babies within about twelve months. Oh, and that whole COVID thing. My husband likes to joke that I run our schedules like a German train station. It makes me laugh, but he’s not wrong. When life gets crazy find a routine and cling to it with all your strength.

Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring further in the final book?

Qaden took my completely by surprise. She is such a complex character because she is not one of the good guys—she’s the captain of Radovan’s guard. But she and Askia are so alike in so many ways. And so figuring out what led her to Radovan’s side—and what’s keeping her there—really deepened the story as a whole and made it so much more three dimensional. I love her so much… I mean, she needs a hug, but I love her.

What’s the best and the worst writing advice you have received?

Worst: Don’t use adverbs. I think I read that in Stephen King’s ON WRITING years and years ago, and I followed it like gospel because… Stephen King. Is is surprising that I have an overwritten 800-page behemoth of a first novel gathering dust on my shelf? Nah. Sometimes a person just smiles sadly.

Best: Learn to plot things out ahead of time. A lot of writers worry that outlining their story will take away all those magical moments of inspiration, but it doesn’t. An outline is just a guidepost. You can always veer away from it. And lets face it, inspiration and passion for a project always wavers somewhere in the middle. That’s where the true value of an outline shines. It’s the crutch you lean on until you find your writerly feet again.

What’s next for you?

I am at work on something completely new. I can’t say much about it just yet, but I’m really, really excited for it. Stay tuned!

Lastly, what have your favourite reads of 2021 been?

There are so many amazing books out this year! Two of my favorites are AMONG THEIVES by MJ Kuhn and HALL OF SMOKE by H.M. Long. Give me morally grey characters or a warrior fighting gods any day.

The post 48 Fantasy & Sci-Fi Book Releases To Look Out For In 2021 appeared first on The Nerd Daily.

Fantasy readers may expect Greta Kelly’s The Frozen Crown to follow the lines of other fantasy novels meant for young adult readers that are popular within the genre. However, the amount of action, politics, adventure, and much more keeps readers interested and rooting for our cast of characters as they try to navigate the conflicts at hand.

The first in a new fantasy series by Greta Kelly, The Frozen Crown follows the story of young Princess Askia, heir to the Frozen Crown of Seravesh. After the evil Emperor Radovan killed her parents and began his tirade into Seraveshi lands, the task of finding an army to save her people fell into Askia’s hands. Her army has been able to keep the Roven Empire’s forces at bay, but after the discovery of a town burned to the ground Askia realises her time is running out and she needs to make some important moves in order to secure her peoples’ safety. After riding to the desert lands of Vishir and spending time amongst the court trying to figure out a way to convince Emperor Armaan to join her cause to save her people. However, shortly after Askia becomes accustomed to her life in Vishir she realises that one of her biggest secrets could be revealed—and get her killed.

Through the dense politicking throughout the novel, there is a lot Askia needs to learn about the customs of the Vishiri Empire and through the conversations Askia has in and out of court the reader is provided with important insight when it comes to each of the important leaders Askia comes face to face with. In addition, the heated discussions Askia has with Prince Enver of Vishir proves to the reader that her journey in this territory is not going to be an easy one—it will take a lot of willpower and negotiating to get these people to stand with her cause. These discussions that take place throughout the entirety of the novel proves to keep readers interested and wondering what could come next.

Through Princess Askia’s cutthroat attitude and compelling story, readers may find her and her many friends easy to fall in love with. From watching Askia’s development from the beginning of the novel in Eshkaroth to watching her fight and win over the Khazan Guard in Vishir, each twist and turn in this novel shows the true development of a young princess turning into the queen she needs to become. In addition, the conflict of heart Askia faces throughout the novel provides tension and mystery that compels readers to continue turning the pages to see just who Askia will or will not end up with in the end.

While there is a lot of information revealed about Askia’s past throughout the novel, there is more information needed in order to really understand Askia’s rage. It is known that the Shazir, a group of believers of The Day Lord who seek to expel witches from the world are the people who killed her parents. However, when the Shazir pledge alliance to Askia it seems very suspicious and out of context. This could just be more court politicking, but it would be helpful for readers to understand the Shazir’s intentions a little bit more without revealing too much.

Overall, The Frozen Crown is an epic tale of love, loss, and how much a young princess will sacrifice herself in order to save her people. Readers who enjoy adventure, action, and just the right amount of politics may find this novel the perfect read to keep them warm and excited in the impending cold winter months.

The Frozen Crown is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of January 12th 2021.

Synopsis | Goodreads

A princess with a powerful and dangerous secret must find a way to save her country from ruthless invaders in this exciting debut fantasy, the first novel in a thrilling duology packed with heroism, treachery, magic, and war.

Askia became heir to the Frozen Crown of Seravesh because of her devotion to her people. But her realm is facing a threat she cannot defeat by sheer will alone. The mad emperor of the Roven Empire has unleashed a horde of invading soldiers to enslave her lands. For months, her warriors have waged a valiant, stealth battle, yet they cannot stop the enemy’s advancement. Running out of time, she sets sail for sun-drenched Vishir, the neighboring land to the south, to seek help from its ruler, Emperor Armaan.

A young woman raised in army camps, Askia is ill-equipped to navigate Vishir’s labyrinthine political games. Her every move sinks her deeper into court intrigues which bewilder and repel her, leaving her vulnerable not only to enemies gathering at Vishir’s gates, but to those behind the palace walls.

And in this glittering court, where secrets are worth more than gold, Askia fears that one false step will expose her true nature. For Askia is a witch gifted with magical abilities—knowledge that could destroy not only her life but her people. As her adversaries draw closer, Askia is forced to make an impossible choice—and no matter what she decides, it may not be enough to prevent Seravesh’s fall.
