Hi, Erin! Welcome back! How have the past three years been since we last spoke?

To be honest, a little nuts, but I’m so happy to be here with you, chatting about this book!

Your latest novel, Catch and Keep, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Cozy, easy, sexy, charming and autumnal.

What can readers expect?

A warm and fuzzy, up north, lakefront setting, real characters with real problems who fall really in love and a bit of tropey goodness, including one of my favorites: falling for your big brother’s best friend!

Where did the inspiration for Catch and Keep come from?

Every summer since I met my husband, I’ve travelled with his family to a lakefront resort in Northern Wisconsin. And every year, I think “this would make a fantastic setting for a romance novel.” I’ve known all along, Maren, the heroine of Catch and Keep, would find her love story in the great outdoors. It’s just who she is and what she’s always been about.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I really enjoy writing kids… Joe, the male lead, is a single father and it’s the first time I got to explore the parenting dynamic in one of my stories. I also had a blast writing all the scenes that included the couples from the previous standalone books in the series, most especially the three guys. There is a moment when Cameron Riggs (Built to Last) and Craig Boseman (Friends Don’t Fall in Love) have a funny heart to heart with Joe, welcoming him into the fold, that I adored writing.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing?

Not this time! This book was almost too easy to write, maybe because it was so close to my heart. I was second guessing myself at every step in the process because it felt like it was going too smoothly. So maybe that was the challenge? A bit of reverse psychology from the literary gods.

Your last few published novels have been romances. Did you envision stepping into adult romances? When did you find you were being drawn to the genre?

No! I never in a million years thought I would ever write adult romance. I’ve always loved reading them, but constructing them, including the spicier scenes, felt way above my skill level. I met my husband while we were still teens and YA romance has always been relatable to me for that reason. But I’ve lived just as long as an adult as not, at this point, and it was time my love stories reflected that. Its been a wild ride bringing these grown up characters with their grown up insecurities and careers and personalities to life!

What’s next for you?

I don’t know! I’ve released seven books in six years and think its time to recharge the creative battery for a while. There are some genres, like fantasy, thrillers and historicals that I’ve been curious to try writing, and I hope to give them a shot before long. However, I think for now I just want to absorb the world around me for a little bit and see what stirs my soul.

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed so far this year and are there any that you can’t wait to get your hands on?

I’ve been reading a lot of darker stories this year. I’m pretty obsessed with Brynne Weaver’s Butcher and Blackbird and Leather and Lark. The combination of serial killers and romance is bananas in the best way. I also really enjoyed Avenging Angel by Kristen Ashley. I love all her books, but this “second generation” story really appealed to me. The character growth was *chef kiss*.

On my tbr, I have a a super special sneak peek at Joy Callaway’s Sing Me Home to Carolina on my ereader and I cannot wait to start it. I believe it releases spring of 2025!

There are two types of people in this world: the ones that think “barn” is the best smell ever invented, and those who are wrong. Joanna Gaines could bottle this up, combine it with beeswax, drop it in a refurbished tin can, and make the Target crowd go spare. It’s that good. And it doesn’t change! English style, western style, north or south, mountains or plains, a stable is a stable is a stable, and it always smells like coming home. Getting your shit together. Finding your center.

As I said, two types. Some people aren’t horse people. They don’t get it. Couldn’t possibly. They’ve never experienced the feeling of strolling down the center aisle just after sunrise. The soft nickering of horses, the swish-flick of their tails against solid wood, the creak as they shift, their soft noses pressing their greeting. The air is heavy and wet with the scent of freshly mown grasses, worn leather, rich manure, and decades of dust, swirling and settling in the beams of dawn. The clinking of bridles dancing in the powerful breeze of a massive fan. The scuff of work boots on packed dirt and concrete. The warm and weirdly gooey feel of slobbery lips lapping up carrots and sugar cubes.

I digress. It’s just . . . it’s my favorite place.

Which is why I wasn’t thrilled to hear he’ll be here today, invading my sanctuary. Sure, he’s the boss’s kid and has every right. One might even argue it’s his duty to be here cleaning stalls and leading trail rides and exercising the stock, except in the eighteen months I’ve been working here, I’ve only ever seen Case Benton Michaels the Third in the stables twice. First, when he was looking for the specific medicine ball he prefers to use for his balance training. Second, on the day of Walker Gibson’s funeral.

Neither time did he notice me. Which was perfectly fine. I have enough on my plate. I don’t need to add “babysitting the arrogant rich kid” to the stack.

That is, until approximately twenty minutes ago when I was sucker punched with the realization of why the famous Case Michaels is being forced to slum it today.

He’s . . . not doing great. According to the rumors, he climbed up on the Richardsons’ corn silo drunk last night. He could have died. Sure, Case rides bulls, which is about as reckless as you can get, but despite his many, many faults, Case is known around the rodeo circuit for his measured brand of reckless. His singular focus on riding is one of the things that makes him stand out. In the chute, he’s all business.

He and Walker Gibson were like two sides of the same champion-worthy coin. They balanced each other perfectly. Walker was hilarious and easy and up for anything, while Case was earthbound. He kept Walker grounded and as safe as he could.

More than once, I saw Walker step up to the chute without his vest or his helmet or, ew, his mouth guard while Case ran after him. I wonder if it had to do something with the fact Walker was terminal and Case was in denial.

People like Case Michaels and Walker Gibson were born for rodeo. Grit in their bones, bravery oozing from their pores.

People like me, too. Not that I would ever say that out loud and not that I could ever in a million years act on the impulse. But deep down inside, I know it’s true. Queen Mab confirms it. Camilla, my mentor and the stable manager here at the ranch, only purchased Mab six months ago, rescuing her from an auction where she was sickly thin and dull-coated. Camilla said she saw a special fire in Mab’s eyes that begged and pleaded for wide open spaces.

It’s what Camilla said she saw in my eyes the first time we met.

And when Mab and I gallop out of the stables, we find our freedom together. No responsibilities, expectations, or restrictions. Just endless blue skies. The Michaels ranch spans thousands of rolling acres, and Mab and I have covered them all.

Regardless of my earlier slip of sympathy toward the boss’s kid, it’s not until I’m bringing Queen Mab back from her (our) workout that I remember the rodeo boy is even around. Still cleaning stalls from the look of it.

In my defense, riding Queen Mab is akin to a religious experience and often has the promising effect of completely emptying my brain of any and all bullshit.

Mab hesitates at the entry to the stables where the ground transitions from a fine gravel to concrete. It’s one of her weird quirks. She can take it at a bit of a trot, but when it comes to a slow stroll after a hard workout, she does this little stutter step, and I need to coax her through with a click of my tongue and a gentle hand to her shoulder.

I have no idea why she is the way she is, but it doesn’t bother me much. Mab runs like the wind, has the most stunning form of any horse I’ve ever laid eyes on, can turn on a dime, and seemed plenty put off by Case Michaels.

That makes two of us.

I recall the way he leaned in, all slick, holding out his hand to introduce himself as if I didn’t already know his name. Even now, I flare my nostrils and lead Mab past him to her stall (which I note is spotless, but seriously, that’s the least the idiot could do; I’m not about to give the dude props for doing his job).

“Does the Queen approve of her quarters?” Case croons over the wall that separates Mab’s stall from a tall, dark, and handsome Thoroughbred named Jose Swervo. I wipe the scowl from my face as he pops his through the bars.

He is not cute. Not even with flushed cheeks setting his blue eyes to sparkling. Not even with straw dust in his hair making him look like a little kid.

Mab, the traitor, nuzzles him through the iron bars. He chuckles low, and I ignore the way it makes the little hairs on my arms stand straight.

“Okay, okay, I thought you might be into Honeycrisp. You minx.” He pulls a handful of apple slices from his shirt pocket and holds them out in his flat palm.

Mab gobbles them up, giving his fingers a couple of licks for good measure, then allows Case to stroke her soft nose. She looks every inch the royal. He laughs again, and his dimple pops.

Damn.

Friends Don’t Fall In Love is about long-time friends, taking chances, and finding out that, sometimes, your perfect person was right there in your corner all along.

A year or so back, I was texting in my favorite group chat about, what else, romance novels, and I asked my best friends what they wanted in their love interests? We’re a diverse group of 40-year old women with complex backgrounds and preferences, but the feedback was unanimous: they wanted, no needed, regular guys. We all love an alpha billionaire with cut abs and a growly bedroom voice, but none of us have ever met one of those in real life. They wanted someone they could actually see themselves encountering at the grocery store, or who might pack their lunch with a note about kicking ass in their board meetings… and not only that, they wanted that to feel just as hot as the (oft toxic) alpha stories they were reading.

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever written an alpha male in my life, so this was good news for me. I married my college sweetheart who is the most secure beta male you’ve ever met. He’s my partner, my best friend, and my biggest fan… and he’s inspired every love interest I’ve ever penned.

Out of this conversation, Craig “Huckleberry” Boseman was born. I’d initially planned for Lorelai’s love interest to be her superstar alpha ex Drake Colter, but… I couldn’t stand the guy. Certainly not enough to put Lorelai through the task of falling for him. Craig had just the tiniest cameo in my debut Built to Last. A paragraph or two, tops. He was just some guy I threw in there as a space holder.

And hold space he did. Craig writes erotic poetry, wears reading glasses, has a motorcycle, and likes to hang out with his 12-year-old nephew. He owns his own indie record company, has a soft middle, and loves to give over receive in the bedroom. He drinks good wine, takes care of Lorelai when she’s sick, and wants nothing more than for her to realize her worth. He thinks she hangs the moon and loves her for exactly who she is, and isn’t threatened by her potential.

If you know me, you know I’m a reader first, writer second. So I asked Craig to help me put together a list of our Top 10 “Secure AF Beta Love Interests” for all of you. Mind, these are in no particular order because, obviously, it’s not a competition for these fellas (unless we were comparing how their ladies rank… then they might, I don’t know, raise their voices or write a strongly worded email, I guess).

West Ravenel in “The Devil’s Daughter” by Lisa Kleypas

Ah, West. Ruggedly handsome, utterly masculine, with a voracious appetite for food, life, and sex. Former childhood bully and wastrel, West doesn’t think he could possibly deserve Lady Phoebe even though he’s built his own small empire, complete with a glowing reputation as a fair and honorable man of the people. Despite his self-deprecating ways, he’ll stop at nothing to give Lady Phoebe everything he has if only to make her smile.

Beck Ryder in “America’s Geekheart” by Pippa Grant

Former boyband member and current underwear model and fashion mogul, Beck Ryder has it all. Except for the ability to impress the smart and beautiful girl next door, especially after he accidentally insults her in front of his millions of social media followers. You’ll fall in love with Beck’s heart, unwavering goodness, sense of humor, and appetite as he convinces Sarah to take a chance on him.

Sebastian Malheur in “The Countess Conspiracy” by Courtney Milan

Notable rake Sebastian has been best friends with the Countess, Violet Waterfield, since they were children and he’s probably been in love with her just as long (though he’d never admit it). After becoming a widow, she wants to publish her scientific research, but, of course, times being what they were, she couldn’t. Sebastian and Victoria concoct a plan, and for five years, Sebastian puts his name on Violet’s work, sharing it widely, speaking about it and often taking the heat for her controversial findings. Until one day, Sebastian is forced to quit and the two friends must discover who they are, really, when they aren’t hiding behind their separate masks and Sebastian takes on the daunting task of helping Violet discover her worth within the safe confines of his big love.

Malkom Slaine in “Demon from the Dark” by Kresley Cole

Is it strange to have a demon on this list? Maybe. But Malkom Slaine defies reason. He’s massive, fearless, and loyal. He’s hidden away for centuries, ashamed of who he’s been turned into until it turns out exactly who he is, is exactly who Carrow needs. He’s protective, which maybe some might call an alpha trait, but I don’t see it that way. Protective is fine as long as he sees her value and what she brings to the table, and boy does he! Also, a half demon, half vampire, and his fated witch mate? Sheesh. *fans self*

Meyer Harrington in “Funny Feelings” by Tarah DeWitt

Meyer is a former superstar comedian who stopped touring in order to raise his deaf daughter (DILF alert!) and manage the younger, prettier, up and coming comedic genious Farley Jones. His admiration and respect for Fee, letting her be exactly who she is and pushing her to challenge herself… while clearly pining for her, well. The result is both hilarious and bittersweet. Just like the best comedies.

Rhys, High Lord of the Night Court in “A Court of Mist and Fury” by Sarah J. Maas

“High Lord” doesn’t exactly say “beta” but hear me out. Rhys is secure A.F. He would do anything for his friends (including giving himself up for fifty years of torture to hide his kingdom). He would do anything for Feyre (including watch her marry his enemy). The pride Rhys displays at Feyre’s growth and ascension into power is unmatched and sexy as hell.

Noah Barden in “In a Jam” by Kate Canterbary

Childhood friends to (modern day) marriage of convenience? Yes please. But the real highlight for me is that Noah has been in love with Shay for most of their lives, so much so, that he’ll put himself through the sheer torture of “fake marrying” her just so she can gain possession of her late grandmother’s tulip farm. Oh, and did I mention he’s a dirty talking beta, who makes jam and is ALSO raising his niece as his own?

Jamie Fraser in “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon

Jamie Fraser has position and power, but not when we first meet him and never when it comes to his relationship with the headstrong and brilliant Claire. It’s not only their age difference, or even the jumping back and forth through the centuries, it’s his straight up loyalty to Claire and his self-assuredness when it comes to handling everything that comes the pair’s way. There’s is a true partnership grown out of respect, adversity, and love.

Josh Im in “Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating” by Christina Lauren

Hazel is the perfect characterization of “if I’m too much, go find less” and Josh Im doesn’t want to. They become best friends on a mission to help each other find love, but as Josh watches time and again as different men fail to understand the brilliance of Hazel, he realizes their mistake is his gain. She’s not too much for him, she’s exactly who he needs and he’s secure enough to love her out loud.

Jason Orson “The Line Up” by Meghan Quinn

It was hard to wrap up this list, but if any one of these characters would be comfortable being last, it would be Jason Orson. Major League baseball player, loyal brother, amateur chef and owner of the “best ass” in baseball (at least according to him). Jason’s undeniable sincerity and unwavering self-confidence hold up to and eventually melt Ice Queen Dottie’s chilly façade. He wears down her rough edges and convinces her to take a chance on him.

Hi, Erin! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Sure! I’m a former grunge girl who read a lot of Jane Austen growing up and fell in love with love. I married my college sweetheart and have two brilliant and hilarious kids. I’m obsessed with documentaries about Victorian serial killers, studying song lyrics, reading with my cat, walking my dog and baking with my kids.

When did you first discover your love for writing?

I’ve always loved telling stories and making people feel things, but I’m not at all comfortable in front of a crowd. In fourth grade, I was given a prompt to write a short story based off of a Norman Rockwell sticker and the teacher loved it so much, she read it out loud to the class. Everyone laughed (with me, not at, thankfully!) and it felt amazing to know something I wrote made people happy. I’ve chased that feeling ever since!

Your latest novel Never Saw You Coming is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Critical, challenging, gooey, swoony and flirty

What can readers expect?

They can expect the same swoony and sweet first love feels that my books are known for, but as always, I’ve layered in quite a few real life aches and growing pains, this time in the form of confronting toxic church and purity culture. It gets heavy, but I’m actually very proud of how polarizing this story is!

Where did the inspiration for Never Saw You Coming come from?

It’s an 100% fictional story, but it’s pulled directly from my own experiences growing up in the Catholic and Evangelical church, being told week after week that I was responsible for the purity of not only myself but of the boys and men around me. It was beyond time to confront that reality for my sake, my daughter’s sake and the sake of young men and women everywhere.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while writing and how you were able to overcome them?

Gah. Where to start? Seriously, every bit of this book was a challenge to write. At conception, I didn’t want to write it. I was afraid of challenging an institution I’d been raised in! Evangelical doctrine is intimidating af, and I worried about alienating myself and my family from our lifelong friends. However, I’ve been coming to terms with my own trauma based off of years of being told I should feel shame about my body and how it may affect another’s actions, and realized I couldn’t NOT write this story. While writing “More Than Maybe”, I met Meg and the more I got to know her, the more I knew in my gut she was the character meant to tell this story of found faith and found families and challenging beliefs. Then came the #MeToo movement and it started a whole other resurgence of acknowledging Pastoral abuse and the disgusting double standard of victim blaming. Out of this, Micah was born. He’s like the antithesis to this kind of trauma, but writing his character and spending time in his brain was emotionally exhausting. Every piece of this book cost me, but I’ve always felt like this story was worth it. I have the platform and the chance to do something about toxic purity culture and I wanted very much to honor that opportunity to the best of my abilities.

Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

Meg is a frigging DELIGHT to write on every level. She’s so cute and naïve and chock-filled with insistent anger at the many injustices of the world. I especially loved writing her and (sometimes) grumpy Micah’s early attempts at flirting and eventually falling in love! Their chemistry is out of this world and the way Micah adored her just oozed. I always wanted someone for Meg who would love her just as she was, fairy wings and all and Micah DOES THAT in spades.

What do you hope readers take away from reading Never Saw You Coming?

I hope they take away a stronger sense of self. That they can see how loved they are and how that love isn’t tied to their identities as assigned by any one church or organization. They can trust their hearts and their guts and know no matter what, they are worth it.

What’s the best and the worst writing advice you have received?

Best: Don’t be so precious about your stories. They’re just words. You aren’t the only one writing them. Just do you best and keep writing your truth as you see it. No one can replica your experience and style exactly, so stop worrying about running out of time/opportunities.

Worst: Write every day. Nope! Everyone is different. This works for a lot of people, but it can cause burnout and bitterness. If the words aren’t coming, take a breather. Consume other media. Spend time outside. I’ve found when I force words, I end up deleting them because they aren’t meant to be.

What’s next for you?

My adult rom com debut, Built to Last will be releasing next fall, 2022 from Griffin Books. It’s a second chance romance where sparks and sawdust fly when two former childhood costars with a tangled romantic history reunite to produce a home renovation show!
