Hi, Dylan! Thank you so much for chatting with us! Firstly, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Thank you so much for having me—you all at The Nerd Daily are fantastic!

I grew up in Wellsville, the same small town in which my rom-com series is set. I began writing stories in middle school, largely to work through personal challenges I was experiencing at that time. Writing is a form of therapy for me, and is the way I process the world. My husband and I met in seventh grade and eventually became high school sweethearts, marrying after we graduated college—we just celebrated our 30^th anniversary! After working over a decade in corporate America (doing things that did not involve writing fiction), I quit to pursue my dream of becoming a novelist. Today I’m busy pursuing my happily ever after with my husband and our two daughters as we split time between Florida and Wellsville, NY.

If you had to describe Change of Plans in five words, what would they be?

Rom-Com with depth and substance.

What can readers expect?

While the book is the third in the Matthews brothers’ series, you can expect to pick this up without having read the other brothers’ stories and immediately feel at home. Wellsville is a Hallmark-like small-town, and the characters in this book are among some of my favorites—especially Bryce’s three nieces, whose hijinks are very, very similar to those of my daughters, growing up!

If you had to pick, which Matthews brother are you most like and why?

I’m most like Drake Matthews (from How Sweet It Is) because he overthinks everything, and also because he is a writer who enjoys disappearing into his work-in-progress. Also, Drake and I both use everything and everyone around us as inspiration for our books!

Do you have any “dreamcasting” for Ryker and Bryce if Change of Plans were to be adapted?

In my head, Ryker was a combination of Chris Hemsworth and wounded-warrior-turned-model, Alex Minsky, and Bryce was a combo of a brunette Scarlett Johansson with Colette, the female chef in Ratatouille.

Will there be any more books in this series of interconnected standalones (perhaps featuring Kate’s sister Kiersten Sweet *crosses fingers*)?

Maybe! *crosses fingers with you*

Bryce’s niece Addison loves Tinkerbell. Do you have a favorite Disney character or movie?

YES! In fact, my short pitch for this book was a rom-com where Despicable Me meet Ratatouille. One of my favorite scenes of all time is in Despicable Me when Gru goes through the nightly tuck-in routine, culminating with the reading of Three Little Kittens—it melts my heart every time!

What was the inspiration for Bryce’s nickname, “Aunt Beamer”?

Since I’d crafted Bryce as the daughter of a trucker who grew up learning to drive everything with wheels, I wanted to give her a car-inspired name. Her full name is Bryce May Weatherford, and with the initials of BMW,  her parents nicknamed her “Little Beamer” which morphed into “Aunt Beamer” when her brother had his daughters.

Change of Plans is full of funny and heartwarming moments. Did you have a favourite scene to write and if so, why?

Aw, thanks for that lovely compliment! I loved writing the cardboard pirate ship reveal scene so much because it showcases Ryker’s love language—acts of service. Ryker best communicates his feelings through physically doing things for those he cares for—it’s one of the many things I find swoony about Ryker!

Besides Change of Plans, what’s a book that romance readers should definitely add to their summer TBR lists?

Summer romance reading is the best! I’d highly recommend Ana Takes Manhattan, by Lissette Decos; A Lakeside Reunion, by C. Chilove; Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez, and I loved Emily Henry’s newest, Happy Place as well as the new release by Meredith Schorr, Someone Just Like You.

Lastly, what’s next for you?

I’m working on a duology that will loosely tie into the Matthews brothers’ series, so look for more small-town romantic comedies with all the feels soon!

Change of Plans is part of a series of interconnected standalones about the Matthews brothers with the main moral of the story is that it’s okay to ask for and accept help. This small-town romantic comedy is perfect for fans of books like Knot My Type by Evie Mitchell, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez, Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake by Mazey Eddings, The Summer Cottage by Annie Rains, and Maggie Moves On by Lucy Score, along with movies like Raising Helen and Gifted. Potential trigger warnings include PTSD and military flashbacks, custody disagreements, loss of parents, vomiting, broken bones, and dementia. Themes include change, communication (and miscommunication), parenthood and motherhood, family, war, mental health, fear of failure, death and loss, love and sacrifice, loneliness, trust, heroism, challenges of growing up, and working-class struggles.

It was enjoyable how Newton described the process of applying for and being matched with a service dog as I thought that this was very interesting and unique; it’s not something that I’ve seen very often (if at all) in romantic comedies. The meaning behind the service dog’s name was also very heartwarming! Personally, I appreciated that Change of Plans was an interconnected standalone as I find that it’s easier for me to get into the plot since I’m already familiar with the setting and a lot of the characters. There was some hesitancy regarding how Bryce’s nieces would appear and if the three of them would distract from the plot, however their hilarious antics were enjoyable, including a “laugh out loud” disastrous Easter party and all the Tinkerbell references.

The custody disputes and the PTSD flashbacks were a little harder to read as these topics as sensitive, so it will be interesting to discover what other readers think of them too. The side story involving the brothers mother, Patty, wasn’t overly interesting as it didn’t seem to do a lot for the plot and lastly, the miscommunication trope was disappointing as it’s one of my least favourite tropes and appeared multiple times.

Overall, Change of Plans is a funny and heartwarming page turner and would be perfect for fans of romantic comedies and single parent romances.

All Fired Up is a delightful second chance, opposites attract, small-town romantic comedy. In addition to fans of How Sweet It Is, All Fired Up would be perfect for fans of the Bergman Brothers series by Chloe Liese, the Brown Sisters trilogy by Talia Hibbert, the Hot and Hammered trilogy by Tessa Bailey, and the Written in the Stars trilogy by Alexandria Bellefleur. The novel deals with themes such as change versus tradition, order and chaos, companionship, escapism, identity, family, love and heartbreak, loss, tragedy, work-life balance, mental health, overcoming past trauma, and war. In my opinion, the morals of this story are to take care of your mental health and to trust your heart.

All Fired Up is a companion novel to How Sweet It Is and whilst it’s not necessary to have read How Sweet It Is prior, I would definitely recommend it as it would significantly improve your reading experience. All Fired Up takes place about a year or two after How Sweet It Is and focuses on Drake Matthew’s publicist and Kate Sweet’s best friend, Imani, and Drake’s younger brother, Zander. Having recently enjoyed How Sweet It Is, I loved how the plot seamlessly flowed from Drake and Kate’s story to Imani and Zander’s story in All Fired Up. Furthermore, I appreciated that Imani and Zander had already been previously introduced and I was delighted that Drake and Kate continued to play prominent roles in All Fired Up (I love getting to see how my favourite characters’ stories continue post happily ever after). I also need to compliment Dylan Newton’s writing, especially of my favourite scene—Imani and Zander’s memorable hot air balloon ride, which is depicted in the book’s cover art, and Newton’s writing was so realistic, detailed, and well thought out, I felt like I was actually in the hot air balloon with Imani and Zander.

Honestly, there wasn’t much about this book that I didn’t like. One minor flaw was that I felt like there was too much of the “will they, won’t they” trope as, despite constantly spending time together and obviously being attracted to each other, it took a long time before Imani decided to give Zander a second chance. I also felt like the birth scene depicted towards the end of the book was a tad too graphic for my tastes.

Overall, I found All Fired Up to be a unique, romantic, and engaging read that I would highly recommend to fellow romance readers. I am very much looking forward to book three starring Zander and Drake’s brother Ryker’s story (which is expected in summer 2023)!

During a lull in her schedule, wedding event planner Kate Sweet agrees to plan a book launch for horror writer Drake Matthews to help her publicist best friend. Things get off to a rocky start when Kate accidently maims her new client and Drake vetoes every one of Kate’s “Spooktacular” book launch ideas. But the great Drake Matthews has writer’s block and the only thing he can seem to write is historical romance. So, when Drake realises that Kate may just be the inspiration he needs for his historical romance love interest, the pair form an unexpected truce, and their professional relationship quickly turns into something more.

Hi, Dylan! How Sweet It Is was such an enjoyable read! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi! First, thank you for having me on The Nerd Daily—I’m excited to be here! I grew up in rural Western New York where I hit my nerd stride early, as the library was my favorite hangout. I was an English major in college, yet my first career was in…banking call centers! The most writing I did was in memos and on Excel project plans. After a decade, I switched careers and began to write full-time. I married my high school sweetheart, and we split time in Florida and New York with our two much cooler daughters, two spoiled cats and a tone-deaf cockatiel. I love reading (shocker!) and fixing up our project home: a Victorian built in 1900 that stole our hearts and may or may not be the inspiration for the Victorian home in my debut rom-com.

If you could describe How Sweet It Is in only five words, what would they be?

A laugh-out-loud romance!

What sets How Sweet It Is apart from other romance novels?

Well, for starters, it’s set in the fall at Halloween—my favorite holiday! Having a sparkly heroine who is typically spreadsheet-perfect getting thrown off her game—becoming a chaos magnet as she coordinates a spooky book launch—was a different romance premise, for sure! Combine that with the hero being a world-famous horror writer and it’s safe to say SWEET is unlike most romances out there! But before that scares some of you away, don’t worry—the book isn’t spooky at all. Although my hero is known as the Knight of Nightmares, we discover that like many of us, Drake is a great guy just doing his job. You can like horror—even write horror—and not be horrifying. For me, there were so many fun things to work with as an author switching genres who is writing about an author switching genres, and the bookish elements of the novel are my favorite. I think the biggest factor that sets this book apart from other romance novels is that I kept it in a very specific lane: a funny, romp of a romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Have you ever been on any of the adventures that Drake and Kate go on in How Sweet It Is (e.g. the crypt or Niagara Falls)?

Ha, yes! Before the pandemic, my whole family joined me for a ‘research trip’ to Niagara Falls and we all did Cave of the Winds for the first time, and while I’ve been on the Maid of the Mist, I tend to get motion-sick so it’s not my favorite Falls attraction. Another fun fact: I love to visit cemeteries and while I’ve never been in a mausoleum exactly like the one Drake and Kate visit, I once had lunch in an old, underground crypt in London, England. It was spooktacular!

What is your favourite scene or chapter in How Sweet It Is and why?

While I think the meet-cute (which is more of a meet-disaster) is ticklishly funny, and the mausoleum scene was where I fell in love with my hero and heroine as a couple, I’d have to say that my favorite scenes are the ones where Drake is with his family, specifically his brothers. I have no brothers, and have all daughters, so I’m fascinated by how guys/brothers interact. My husband has two brothers and their zany interaction is much like Drake, Ryker and Zander—the brother scenes in the book are much like the trio in real life, so they make me smile!

Drake’s mother owns PattyCakes and Coffee, so what is your favourite café order?

They say to write what you know, so Kate orders my favorite in the book: Chai Tea Latte!

What is the main message that you want readers to take away from How Sweet It Is?

So many times we have preconceived notions or labels for others: horror writers are creepy; first-born children are the responsible ones; you grew up in X so you must be like Y. Oftentimes, we even believe those fallacies about ourselves, and this limits us. If I could ask a reader to take one thing away from the book it’s this: challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone this year. Read a different genre. Try a new food/hobby. Set yourself an audacious goal…and block out any haters as you strive toward it. You are not one label, or even twenty, so allow yourself to grow out of your typical boundaries.

What is one challenge that you faced while writing How Sweet It Is and how did you overcome it?

Oh, by far the biggest challenge was writing and editing during the pandemic. While I aspire to be that author who writes from 9-5, her muse obedient and abundant during those hours, logistically, this is not my writing reality. I have a husband, kids, pets and I’ve been a Girl Scout leader for over 16 years—in short, even in the best of times, I struggle to get words on a page. When COVID lockdown began and both my girls were home taking classes in the dining room, I was suddenly crowned substitute teacher, lunch lady and IT guru in addition to author. With the library and other writing spots unavailable, my work-in-progress stalled. For a while, I wrote at night when everyone else was sleeping. That made for a cranky writer, and it’s hard to pen romantic comedies when you want to throat-punch everyone. Eventually, I established better writing boundaries, which I’ve kept to this day. A closed office door means that unless you are bleeding, and need a ride to the hospital, I am not to be disturbed or else you will need a ride to the hospital. (Just kidding on that last bit. Sort of.)

What are some recent books that you have enjoyed?

I was fortunate to get an advanced reader copy of Farrah Rochon’s THE DATING PLAYBOOK (coming August 2021) which combines romance with football, and as an avid Buffalo Bills fan, it doesn’t get much better than that. I also recently read ADULTING by Liz Talley, and if she doesn’t hook you in the first chapter, you must be made of stone! My fraternal book twin (that also debuted with me on July 13) THE REHEARSALS by Annette Christie, was incredible—like a clever, romantic version of ‘Groundhog Day,’ it kept me turning pages to see how the time loop would resolve. While I’m really digging rom-coms right now, I love YA and fantasy, and recently finished re-reading Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha series (looove me some Grishaverse!).

What are some things that you have been doing to help yourself stay positive during the challenging times of COVID-19?

Focusing on the things we could control, versus all the things outside of our control, was sanity-saving for me and my family. Also, the fact I was writing a romantic comedy forced me to focus on the hilarity found in everyday situations—and while sometimes it was a massive challenge to be lighthearted and funny in my writing, the effort itself paid off with my overall attitude and outlook. We were more fortunate than many in pandemic times, and I count my blessings that we are now all vaccinated and can see friends and family…and go to bookstores once more!

How Sweet It Is is a slow burn “enemies to lovers” contemporary romance novel with sprinkles of humour. It deals with themes like appearance versus reality, expectations versus reality, love and heartbreak, work/life balance, and family. Fans of The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, and Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur will adore How Sweet It Is! The main takeaways were that you must be true to yourself and follow your heart; Kate becomes an event planner instead of going into her family’s medical practice and Drake starts writing historical romance even though it’s not what his horror fans have come to expect. Another inspiring message from the book that I really liked is: “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice”.

One thing that I loved about this book were the funny moments that had me laughing out loud. For example, Kate’s terrified reaction to Drake’s pint-sized “attack dog” and Drake’s sketchy-looking tin man costume. The romantic scenes were great, such as Kate and Drake’s helicopter trip over top of Niagara Falls. I also loved the fact that Drake, dubbed the knight of nightmares, turns out to be a big softy. Lastly, without giving anything away, the end of this book was super romantic and very fitting!

To be honest, there wasn’t much that wasn’t enjoyable! Some minor cons were that I didn’t feel that the cover art really matched the plot or feeling of the book, Drake and Kate had a few misunderstandings that really could have been avoided, and we never got to find out if anything romantic happened between Kate’s publicist friend and Drake’s brother…maybe this could be a potential sequel!?

This was my first time reading Dylan Newton’s work and How Sweet It Is exceeded my expectations. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to other romance readers!
