In the previous episode, Zelda was cared for by Mambo Marie and remained in Limbo along with Hilda. However, the two sisters were guided by their brother, Edward, only for Zelda to discover the answer on how to save them and promptly killed by Blackwood. Lilith is now pregnant with Lucifer’s child and Blackwood now bears the Mark of Cain and he teams up with the pagans in order to retrieve his precious egg. Sabrina is able to retrieve the final Unholy Regalia item, Judas’ silver, only to be tricked by Caliban, who entombs her. The pagans succeed in bringing the Green Man to life, thanks to Harvey’s blood and death, along with several other characters being killed.

Decades Later

Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) reads the tale of when the Morningstars fell and King Caliban (Sam Corlett) tried to claim Earth but failed. The pagans beat Caliban and claimed Earth as their own and an army of celestials took to Hell. Apparently, decades have now passed, and Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) still remains entombed, wondering who might come save her. However, her family and friends are all dead and the only person who can save Sabrina is Sabrina.

Another version of Sabrina wakes the entombed Sabrina and they switch places. Future Sabrina tells her to retrieve the Unholy Regalia from Hell and to take Greendale back from the pagans. When she’s done, it’ll be her turn to do the process again, to complete the time loop.

Sabrina finds the Regalia when Herod (Ian Rozylo), Pontius Pilate (Daniel Nemes), and Vlad (Michael Antonakos) reappear, ready to attack. Sabrina stops them with her powers, and they tell her the archangel Michael defeated Caliban and the pagans now rule Earth. She then transports home, which is overrun by greenery and sees the skeletons of Agatha, Prudence, Mambo, and Zelda, along with the headstones of Salem and Hilda.

It All Comes Together

Later that night, Sabrina searches the house when she is almost attacked, however, Herod, Pontius, and Vlad kill them. With her new protectors in tow, she visits the school and then pays a visit to the carnival where she finds the Green Man, along with the skeletons of Robin, Nick, Roz, and Theo. The pagans are still giving the Green Man blood when Ambrose appears. He tells her everyone is dead, and the mines are the only safe place left.

Ambrose has read many books over the decades, but he still has the egg, which she realises they can use to save everyone. The must smelt down the Unholy Regalia and form it into a weapon—a morning star—along with using the egg’s magical time properties. However, they will need the stone circle, but Blackwood has the Academy and still bears the Mark of Cain.

Sabrina retrieves the jar that trapped Batibat (Megan Leitch) in Season 1 and at the Academy, she releases Batibat on Blackwood (Richard Coyle). Standing in the circle with the egg, Sabrina wields the morning star with Ambrose, Herod, Pontius, and Vlad pushing the circle to create a vortex. After chanting several times, Sabrina finds herself back in time at the point where Blackwood was searching for the egg in the Academy.

Sabrina transports home to warn Mambo Marie (Skye P. Marshall), Prudence (Tati Gabrielle), and Ambrose that Blackwood is coming, and they must leave. She then finds Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) with her friends and she transports them also to Dorian’s Gray Room. Zelda (Miranda Otto) then wakes with the answer on how to defeat the pagans and she insists they will bring Hilda back. Surrounding the Cain Pit, the females call on Hecate. After quite the dramatic moment and speech, Hilda (Lucy Davis) emerges from the grave.

Farewell To The Carnival

They ponder how they can stop the town so they will put the townspeople to sleep with a magical lullaby and the pagans will likely now use Ms. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) as the virgin.

The pagans concerns ease when Robin (Jonathan Whitesell) brings Ms. Wardwell to Carcosa (Will Swenson) and Nagaina (Vanessa Rubio). They place Wardwell within the Green Man and the pagans eat the fruit. Wardwell begins to be covered in vines, however, the Green Man turns to black as it was a glamoured Pesta and Sabrina. The coven then drives the pagans from Greendale and Harvey (Ross Lynch) plans to slay Nagaina using the handy old mirror trick, however, Roz (Jaz Sinclair) saves his life and they keep Nagaina’s head.

Hilda confronts Circe (Lucie Guest) with a poppet in her hand and breaks the arms and legs, followed by Circe’s neck. Zelda and Ambrose face Carcosa who begins to play his tune, but he’s quickly run through by Prudence’s sword.

Double Trouble

Sabrina must now return to Hell to complete the time loop and says goodbye to her family. This Sabrina confronts herself and warns her of Caliban using a glamour and not to give him the silver. Other-Sabrina suggests merging; however, present-Sabrina has an idea, which the other catches on to as other-Sabrina still wants to be Queen after retrieving the final Unholy Regalia item.

Other-Sabrina confronts Caliban and then entombs him. She tells the Court she obtained the last item and it is now time for her to become Queen, so Lilith prepares Sabrina for her coronation.

As for our other characters, Theo (Lachlan Watson) and Robin are together, while Roz and Harvey take their relationship to the next level. Ambrose brought Dr. Cee’s (Alessandro Juliani) cocoon to the house so Hilda can say goodbye, however, she finds him sitting up and very much alive. Prudence visits Ambrose as she found Dorcas dead and believes if she killed Blackwood in Scotland, many things would not have transpired, but Ambrose wouldn’t let her do it. At the Academy, Prudence sees Nick on the steps and the pair both feel alone.

Mambo and Zelda enjoy a drink by the fire and Zelda says they are now the Order of Hecate, worshipping the three-in-one. Mambo believes there is a darker force coming and they will need to prepare the coven for war.  After that, Zelda then kisses Mambo!

At the Spellmans, Hilda, Zelda, and Ambrose are feeling quite down when Sabrina returns to tell them she wants to be a teenager and she’s done with Hell. Ambrose pulls her aside as he is aware something is off with her and she informs him of what she’s done. Ambrose believes she’s created a time paradox, which could have terrible ramifications. Sabrina thinks that Lucifer and the Aunties won’t be a problem, but Lilith on the other hand could stir up some trouble if she realises there are now two Sabrinas.

We get to see Hell-Sabrina assume the throne and crowned Queen of Hell. Meanwhile, Blackwood, accompanied by Agatha (Adeline Rudolph), Judas (Darius Willis), and Judith (Whitney Peak), calls on the eldritch terrors and stabs the egg, which causes a great flashing of lights and screams. It is the beginning of the end. The end of the Spellmans. The end of all things…

Overall Thoughts?

I absolutely love that Sabrina was able to stop herself from tearing her life in two and having to decide between Earth and Hell, but Ambrose is right…there are going to be some serious ramifications in the next season.

Unfortunately I was slightly disappointed with the ‘cliffhanger’, but also we didn’t learn much about these eldritch terrors. That being said, the concept of ‘eldritch’ is often seen in fantasy with it stemming from H. P. Lovecraft’s work, just take a look at Cthulhu if you’re intrigued and various reiterations can be found within books, movies, and gaming.

All in all, it was quite a full-on season and I am dreading waiting another year for Season 4.

In the previous episode, Sabrina enlists the help of the hedge witches to take on the pagans and capture Circe so Dorcas and Roz can be returned to flesh. As for Hilda, she transforms into a spider thanks to Circe and Zelda is forced to shoot and bury her in the Cain Pit. Lilith flees Hell with Lucifer after her, but he quickly captures up with her and she asks for Blackwood’s help to ensure their survival as she has been asked to separate them. Caliban tried to help Sabrina with Roz’s situation, but it didn’t go to plan as the spell could only work if Harvey truly loved Roz.

Everything Has Gone To Heaven

Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) race out of their rooms and find Zelda (Miranda Otto) on the floor, so Ambrose calls for Mambo Marie (Skye P. Marshall)  and Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) to help. Mambo Marie removes the bullet and informs them there is life, but she is lost in Limbo. They hear a scream and Mambo Marie warns them to not let whatever it is into the house. Outside the three of them find a banshee—one or more of the Spellmans will die.

Lucifer (Luke Cook) wakes to find him as himself with Blackwood now gone, who has been given the Mark of Cain by Lilith (Michelle Gomez). In exchange for that, he gave Lucifer’s seed to Lilith, who is now with child. She tells him it’s a boy, which grants Lilith merely a stay of execution and she’s ordered to summon the Infernal Court.

Carcosa (Will Swenson) is angered after four pagans were killed when Blackwood (Richard Coyle) is brought in, showing them the Mark of Cain and seeking an alliance. He tells them about the secret entryways into the Academy, in exchange for retrieving his precious egg.

Meanwhile, Theo (Lachlan Watson) and Robin (Jonathan Whitesell) are holding hands when Robin confesses he is a hobgoblin, which means he can run fast amongst other things. The pair decide to sleep together as they are ready, but also Theo doesn’t want to be sacrificed to the Green Man. Meanwhile, things are getting hot and heavy with Roz (Jaz Sinclair) and Harvey (Ross Lynch), but Roz sees visions of Sabrina and Harvey kissing. She stops and asks him if he still loves Sabrina and he says he loves Roz, while also accidentally mentioning the Pygmalion spell, which she doesn’t know about.

Saved By The Cheerleaders

In Hell, Lucifer asks the demons to kneel and promptly kills one of the Kings when he speaks against him. Beelzebub informs Lucifer of the quest for the Unholy Regalia when Caliban (Sam Corlett) introduces himself, and it seems the quest must be completed.

At the Spellmans, Ambrose talks of a siphoning spell that could take the powers from the hedge witches and replenish the coven. However, it would kill them, but Sabrina gets an idea. Sabrina tells Roz she’s in need of a young, energetic group…the Ravenettes! She asks if they can perform at the Academy to help restore the coven’s powers. The Ravenettes stand in the middle of the stone circle and perform to ‘Hey Mickey’, while the coven performs a spell and takes some of their energies.

After they finish, Blackwood and the pagans arrive, but Sabrina is able to transport the Ravenettes to school and the coven escapes to Hell. However, Sabrina left her aunties effigies behind and returns to retrieve them where she has a brief run-in before escaping again. The pagans find Circe (Lucie Guest) and a dead Dorcas (Abigail Cowen), who was attacked by  Agatha (Adeline Rudolph). Blackwood now wants every Spellman dead.

Meanwhile in Limbo, Zelda walks into the Spellman house and Hilda (Lucy Davis) is there also. Zelda is speaking of returning when Edward Spellman (Georgie Daburas) walks in. He says he will help guide Zelda and they must start in the past. They come across a young Zelda and Blackwood at the Academy and look at a spell Blackwood ripped out, which features moons. In another memory, Hilda and Zelda find a baby Sabrina left in their house and Edward prompts his present sisters to look in the basket where they find a blanket with a half-moon.

Back at Baxter High, Ms. Wardwell is angry when she enters the classroom and an announcement is made for Roz, Harvey, and Theo to head to the office. They are approached by Carcosa and  Nagaina (Vanessa Rubio), but Robin whisks the three of them away, revealing he has betrayed them. The group of four hope to reach out to Sabrina using her special marker.

The Third and Final Quest

Lucifer and Lilith approach Sabrina to inform her she needs to complete the final challenge and tell her of her baby brother, while Prudence and Ambrose will go back to help the aunties. Lucifer says only Judas knows where the silver is and he speaks to Sabrina in her head telling her to go to a place in the Ninth Circle and she’ll find Judas alongside Cassius and Brutus.

Ambrose informs Marie that the house may be attacked next, so Ambrose will be the first line of defence against the banshee and Blackwood, but Prudence can have the killing blow.

Sabrina finds Judas somewhat entombed and she offers him water in exchange for the location. One of the ways to find it? Betray someone she loves with a kiss. She then heads to school and finds Harvey, and he brings up the issue with Roz briefly and she backs out of kissing him. She returns to Judas and the other option is to go to the Field of Blood where his silver is buried in the crypt with the first vampire, Vlad the Impaler.

Sabrina is about to enter into another painting when Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) comes across her and he realises her priorities have changed. After she leaves, Nick receives an SOS message from Roz and he goes to help Sabrina’s friends. Robin tells them the locals will be filled with a spore and the Green Man will then bloom with the blood of a virgin and everyone will die. That is when Carcosa, Nagaina, and the carnival folk barge in.

After finding the silver, Sabrina begins counting it, however, Vlad (Michael Antonakos) awakens and enchants her with his voice. It appears Vlad is the son of Judas and he says he will drink her blood, but it burns his mouth as she has diluted celestial blood.

The End Is Nigh

Prudence hears Agatha laughing and she learns of Dorcas’s death. Agatha is stabbed by Prudence, who is then stabbed in the back by Blackwood. Ambrose finds Prudence dying by her sister and tells him what Blackwood is after.

Still in Limbo, Edward shows his sisters the future where witches gather to see an old, white-haired Zelda into the afterlife with Sabrina and Hilda by her side. Edward then gestures to drawings of the new moon, half-moon, and full moon, to which Zelda also says maiden, mother and crone—the three phases of a witch’s life. It is then that Zelda wakes up with the knowledge of how they can regain their power. However, when she wakes, she sees the banshee, a dead Mambo Marie, and Blackwood looking on. He then stabs Zelda and the banshee finally stops screaming.

Sabrina returns to Judas who wishes to feel the silver, but Sabrina is tricked as Caliban used a glamour. He traps Sabrina in the stone, and she sees Lucifer and Lilith have also been entombed.

At the end of the episode, Roz and Theo are held captive at the carnival and they see Robin and Nick have been killed. They then see Harvey is trapped, giving the Green Man life. Vines cover Harvey and his neck snaps, with the Green Man releasing spores into the air…

Overall Thoughts?

Well… Zelda survived, only to be killed again and Hilda still remains in the Cain Pit, which means she could likely be dead. This episode really is going Game of Thrones-style and just killing off everyone, but with so many characters killed, something has to happen in the final episode of Season 3, since we know they can’t be that cruel with a Season 4 already in the works! Despite this, things are not looking good for the witches with the Green Man now releasing its spores into the air and bringing death to mortals and witches. Who’s going to stop it all? Will it be Sabrina even though she’s entombed alongside Lucifer and Lilith? Let’s find out…

In the previous episode, Sabrina embarked on a search to retrieve Pontius Pilate’s bowl and succeeded, which leaves her and Caliban now with one item each. Sabrina also used the bowl with the help of Ambrose to rid Nick of Lucifer’s evil residue. Ambrose was quite busy with helping Sabrina, along with discovering Carcosa is the great god Pan and creating a way to send out an SOS to the hedge witches. However, the hedge witches arrived and they weren’t happy to have been summoned. The episode also saw Lucifer stir up some trouble with Harvey and some of the coven members, as well as something strange happening to Hilda thanks to the pagans.

Witches Helping Witches

Zelda (Miranda Otto) informs the witches about the group of pagans, which has Pan and a gorgon amongst them. Pesta goes to kill Zelda, but Mambo Marie (Skye P. Marshall) stops her and Zelda tells them they can form a new coven if they stand with them against the pagans.

Prudence (Tati Gabrielle), Nick (Gavin Leatherwood), and Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) prepare the Desecrated Church for the witches and Prudence learns of their break-up, which only happened two hours ago, and she suggests a cord-cutting spell that could rid Sabrina of her emotional ties.

Sabrina visits her friends and she learns from Robin (Jonathan Whitesell) that the pagans came to Greendale to resurrect the old gods, including the Green Man, and he will stand with Sabrina. He informs her the resurrection can’t be completed without a virgin sacrifice, but there’s still time. Caliban (Sam Corlett) then appears with a proposal and he will help Roz (Jaz Sinclair) if Sabrina agrees to it, and so she goes with him in search of a spell.

In Hell, Lilith (Michelle Gomez) receives the fetish doll she received from Adam and it’s come from Lucifer, so she is leaving at once. Later on, Lilith visits Zelda and seeks sanctuary, but Zelda turns her away.

Meanwhile, Hilda (Lucy Davis) is watching TV with Dr. Cee (Alessandro Juliani), who briefly sees Hilda’s current reflection in the TV, but dismisses it. The pair then sing ‘By The Sea’ from Sweeney Todd when Hilda’s current form shows. She explains she’s be cursed by the pagans and she believes she is going to die. Hilda doesn’t want to distract the coven and instead wants to be with Dr. Cee.

True Love’s Kiss

Caliban and Sabrina search texts in the library and proposes that instead of competing to find Judas’ pieces of silver, they find them and rule Hell together. However, that would occur only if they marry, but he would stop Earth from becoming the Tenth Circle. She won’t have it and suggests potentially working with Heaven, but everything must be in writing and will be a political alignment. Caliban is disappointed it won’t at least be carnal.

Sabrina and Caliban find Harvey (Ross Lynch) with Roz, who is now in pieces, but Caliban says she can be put together. Sabrina and Harvey talk about still being virgins, which he’s surprised about, along with Sabrina’s break-up.

Mambo Marie is teaching the coven a dance of protection when Zelda walks in outraged and stops it. Prudence explains she knows and invited Mambo Marie, and they need to adapt in order to survive. Mambo Marie apologises and hopes Zelda will get to know her better.

Caliban informs Harvey that the Pygmalion spell is most effective where Harvey and Roz first kissed, which was at school. At the school, Harvey learns he must give up his love for Roz in order to bring her back and if he kisses her again, she will return to stone. Harvey offers his love up to Aphrodite; however, it doesn’t work and Caliban says he mustn’t truly love Roz. Robin says Circe can likely tell Roz back into human form, but it’s too dangerous.

Meanwhile, a Southside Serpent walks into Dr. Cee’s store and Hilda has turned into a spider-like creature and devours the man whole. Dr. Cee returns from going to Pop’s in Riverdale and finds the man’s body, along with Hilda even further transformed and wanting her eggs to be fertilised. She later calls Zelda saying there’s been a death and to bring a gun. When Zelda arrives at Dr. Cee’s, she finds him encased in spider’s web and a transformed Hilda, who begs to be killed. Zelda shoots her and then buries Hilda in the Cain Pit, hoping she returns to her normal self.

A Little Witchy Badassery

Ms. Wardwell is praying when Lilith knocks on the door and uses Adam’s (Alexis Denisof) body to be let in. Adam-Lilith says she needs to be hidden and Wardwell agrees to help. Later on, Wardwell receives a visit from Blackwood (Richard Coyle) and he takes Lilith to aid with a ritual of separation.

Caliban and Sabrina go to the Academy and Nick thinks the two are together, which angers Sabrina, especially when she’s accused of lying. Sabrina tells Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) she wants to go on the offensive by using the hedge witches against the pagans, so they come up with a plan.

Ambrose and Sabrina offer wine to the hedge witches and she urges them to fight. They focus their energies on to a poppet of Sabrina, who is now at the carnival with Salem. She fights off a few pagans and traps Circe (Lucie Guest) in the Academy. They give Circe an ultimatum: she turns Roz and Dorcas (Abigail Cowen) back, or they chop off her hands. They return to their normal selves and Robin demands she also turns the pigs back into jocks. Afterwards, Sabrina runs into Nick and they both apologise with Nick offering to be friends.

Meanwhile, Lilith is conducting the separation ritual and tells Lucifer it’s recommended both parties be asleep, so he falls asleep. She clicks her fingers waking Blackwood and she says they must complete an act to ensure their survival.

At the end of the episode, Mambo Marie teaches her ways to Judas (Darius Willis) and Judith (Whitney Peak) in the doll house; and Sabrina decides to conduct the cord-cutting spell and places both Nick and Harvey’s names on the candle before letting it burn.

While Zelda waits for Hilda to rise, she opens the door thinking it will be her sister but finds Wardwell waiting, and she shoots Zelda.

Overall Thoughts?

Woah. Woah. Two deaths? Two Spellmans!? While it’s certainly a worry, let’s not be too concerned yet as they are witches and although their powers are essentially non-existent, they do have the hedge witches by their side and also, the season of course is going to end somewhat nicely so perhaps it’ll just be one Spellman?

I was surprised to see Nick and Sabrina become friends once again after breaking up and being heartbroken mere hours ago. Maybe it’s a witch thing? I’m sure many people would love for break-ups to be like that. Regardless, things are going to be crazy in the next episode with only two more episodes of the season…

In the previous episode, the coven celebrated the Hare Moon, however, they ran into the pagans in the forest, which caused some grief as they took away the moon to prevent the coven from restoring their powers. Meanwhile, Nick is having a difficult time coping after all he has been through and Dorcas and Agatha were on the receiving end of Carcosa and Nagaina’s anger.

The Second Challenge

Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) wakes chained at the Spellmans where Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) and Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) tell him he got high and freed Lucifer. They plan to do a cleansing ritual on him, but it takes 30 days and they only have three with the pagans after them. Ambrose will use the egg’s time warping powers to compress the 30 days into one day.

Sabrina then pays a visit to Roz (Jaz Sinclair) and tells Harvey (Ross Lynch) and Theo (Lachlan Watson) of the pagans, while Ambrose is researching how he can help Dorcas and Agatha too. Lilith (Michelle Gomez) says Sabrina is required in Hell as it’s time for the second challenge of the Unholy Regalia and she has informed all the coven that Sabrina is Queen.

Caliban and Sabrina must obtain Pontius Pilate’s bowl, but Sabrina declines. Lilith then steps in to say everything that has happened, including the coven’s failing powers, is because of Sabrina’s refusal to directly claim the throne. Sabrina must go to Golgotha in Jerusalem, which is locked in an eternal time loop and mastering time magick is a must to escape. Sabrina will travel through one of Dorian’s paintings and then use the egg’s time properties to aid her.

Ambrose is overseeing Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) connect with Agatha (Adeline Rudolph), which is dangerous while Agatha is manic. Agatha’s thoughts are all over the place, but Prudence sees the faun and they realise Carcosa is the great god Pan, which means they are in more trouble than they realised.

He later studies stone-Dorcas (Abigail Cowen) and he hopes they can amplify their power using a circle of stones and there’s one beneath the ground where Sabrina was almost baptised. He suggests they use the last of their magic to bring them to the surface.

Stuck Within Time

Lilith and Sabrina travel to Golgotha and the slightest misstep could have Sabrina stuck in a time loop. Sabrina is approached by Pontius Pilate (Daniel Nemes) and seized. Sabrina is then locked in a cage next to Caliban (Sam Corlett) and Barabbas (Oliver Rice), who is forced to relive the same day.

Pilate approaches them and says the punishment is 100 lashes, so Caliban steps up to receive them in place of Sabrina, while she tries to learn what happens to Barabbas when he is pardoned.

Meanwhile, Elsepth (Em Haine) speaks to Melvin (Tyler Cotton) and she wants to give Sabrina to the pagans when Blackwood-Lucifer (Richard Coyle) appears, and tells them to join the pagans. Elspeth and Melvin give themselves to the pagans and Carcosa (Will Swenson) stabs Elspeth in the throat, while Melvin runs free and Lucifer-Blackwood watches on angered by how he has been treated.

Zelda (Miranda Otto) is trying to figure out what to do and Hilda (Lucy Davis) suggests they call on other hedge witches, such as Dezmelda. Right then, Ambrose and Prudence walk in and tell them of their plan with the stones. As for Hilda, she recalls Circe chanting and realises something is happening to her and later on, Hilda has a large bump on her cheek and when she squeezes it, several spiders escape.

At Cerberus Books, Robin (Jonathan Whitesell) is approached by Billy (Ty Wood) and Colin and he chants something when they threaten him, but Theo swings in to call them off.

Trick After Trick

During the trial, Barrabas is pardoned and Sabrina and Caliban are sentenced to death. However, Sabrina uses a glamour to be Barrabas and takes off with Pilate’s bowl and escapes. Sabrina feels guilty for leaving Caliban there and decides she will see to Nick and the coven before going to Hell.

Meanwhile, Blackwood-Lucifer taunts Harvey and suggests Harvey and others wreak havoc on the carnival so he doesn’t feel so useless. Robin and Theo are making out, but Theo stops as he doesn’t know anything about Robin, who then speaks of his adoptive parents in the military and he doesn’t believe in what they do. Theo receives a call from Harvey explaining what he wants to do, so Theo and Robin go after him.

Ambrose has brought the stones into the Academy and Sabrina participates in calling to the other witches. Lucifer approaches Agatha and suggests she seeks her revenge, so she comes running in and smashes one of the stones and almost smashes Dorcas. Unfortunately, their message didn’t get out and Melvin tells them that the pagans killed Elspeth.

Harvey and the jocks trash the carnival when Circe (Lucie Guest) approaches and turns the four jocks into pigs. Theo and Robin arrive to find Harvey with the pigs and Robin recommends they leave. Theo and Harvey go to tell Robin about Greendale, but he tells them about himself instead.

Help Arrives?

Ambrose and Sabrina see Nick, who seems worse and filled with Lucifer’s residue, which is infernal and corrupting. Ambrose they lure out the residue into someone who has the same blood: Sabrina. She drips her blood on to Nick and the residue begins pouring out of his nose and pooling into a mass. It jumps onto Sabrina’s hands and she douses them into Pilate’s bowl, which is filled with holy water.

Meanwhile, Hilda tell Zelda something has happened to her, but Zelda isn’t listening when Ambrose shows the essence of Lucifer to his aunties. Feeling hurt, Hilda pays a visit to Dr. Cee (Alessandro Juliani) and she hides her changed state from him with a glamour.

Sabrina visits Nick, who is now better, but he doesn’t think he can be with Sabrina as he’s not sure if it was something within that made him say what he said. He wants her to focus on being Queen and he leaves. Lilith take Sabrina to Hell with the bowl when a naked Caliban reappears claiming Sabrina cheated and he doesn’t plan to lose. Sabrina informs Lilith that Lucifer escaped and she’s concerned as Lilith will be killed by him.

Ambrose mixes the residue with other substances in hopes to keep the pagans at bay when Gryla (Heather Doerksen), Pesta, Sycorax (Kaylah Zander), and Mambo Marie (Skye P. Marshall) appear with Gryla saying they will kill them for summoning the witches.

Overall Thoughts?

There comes a time in a season when it hits a little lull, and that would be this episode. While Sabrina retrieved the second item, it was unfortunately less interesting than King Herod’s crown, along with some strange things occurring like Harvey asking the jocks for their help? Regardless, bringing the hedge witches into the fold will be interesting, especially since they’ve already announced they wish to kill the coven… Will they be a third big bad the coven must face?

In the previous episode, Sabrina embarked on a quest against Caliban in order for her to fight for her role as Queen of Hell, while the coven realises they’re facing issues with their powers. The majority of the characters all visit Professor Carcosa’s carnival and there Sabrina has to face off against King Herod after retrieving his crown since it’s part of the Unholy Regalia. We also learn more about the carnival folk and that they worship the old gods and are in need of a virgin as a sacrifice.

A Loss of Power

At the Academy, Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) is fresh out of the shower and he’s about to have some kind of elixir when Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) astral projects in to invite him to her cheerleading performance. After she leaves, instead of having a few drops, Nick downs the bottle.

Roz (Jaz Sinclair) and Harvey (Ross Lynch) are making out when Roz mentions her father will be out of town for a week and that they’re ready to take it to the next level. After she leaves, a Medusa-like shadow appears on Harvey’s wall. The next morning, Harvey and his dad are having breakfast when the snake charmer, Nagaina (Vanessa Rubio), walks in wearing his mother’s robe after spending the night with Mr. Kinkle.

Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) are planning to celebrate the Hare Moon and as the youngest member of the coven, Sabrina must be the symbolic hare and she will release a rabbit into the forest and sing. Hilda also tells Zelda that her and Dr. Cee are engaged, but Zelda isn’t happy.

At Baxter High, Ms. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) is looking over several books when Lucy’s mother (Kayla Deorksen) comes in to thank her, but Wardwell doesn’t know what she’s talking about as it was Lilith. Sabrina sends Nick a magical message to see where he is and he’s busy drinking at Dorian’s. Harvey then mentions Nagaina at his house, so Roz, Harvey, and Theo (Lachlan Watson) are going to investigate the carnival, but Robin (Jonathan Whitesell) wants to sit this one out. Hilda arrives as Sabrina is needed at the Academy and Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) tells the Spellmans that Lucifer (Luke Cook) has cut them off from their power.

They confront him in the dungeon, and he says he will return it if they set him free. It’s then that they learn about Sabrina being Queen. Zelda is outraged and says Sabrina has a saviour complex, but Ambrose says they need to focus on their powers so Sabrina will head to Hell to get them the juice. After their visit, Nick faces Lucifer and begins hitting him all the while Lucifer taunts him. In his cage, Blackwood (Richard Coyle) is outraged about being beaten, but it seems the two may be working together.

Calling All Angels

Roz, Theo, and Harvey walk around the carnival, but nobody is there so Roz sneaks into Nagaina’s tent to try and use her cunning. However, Nagaina is there and calls Roz a sex-obsessed seer. Roz and Theo are approached by Carcosa (Will Swenson) when Roz comes running out and they all flee. Robin warned Carcosa and the carnival folk plan to celebrate Ostara.

In Hell, Ambrose appoints himself Sabrina’s privy counsellor and he’s excited to be in Hell. They ask Lilith for help, but she says his powers come from within Lucifer as he’s celestial. Sabrina then decides they need to find another angel.

They pay a visit to Dorian (Jedidiah Goodacre) about the angels she killed (in Season 2) and the other that was trapped in a painting as they plan to do some bloodletting, which the coven will drink. While Dorian drains some blood, Sabrina overhears whipping sounds and finds Nick enjoying being chained and beaten by sex demons. Sabrina storms off only to find Dorian has downed the blood with only a small vial left.

Meanwhile, Roz is shaking and Harvey goes to find Sabrina. When he arrives at the Spellmans, only Hilda is there, but she explains their powers are waning and gives a blanket to him to tide them over until their powers are back. She continues to get worse, so Harvey grabs a gun and heads to the carnival to figure out what happened. In Nagaina’s tent, he finds statues covered by scarves, but when Harvey returns, he finds Roz has turned to stone.

The Hare Moon

Upon returning home, Sabrina shows her family the small vial, when Hilda suggests a moon bath, which is a symbolic rebirth using oils and the moonlight. She suggests they use the blood as part of the oils they cover themselves in.

Sabrina and the coven sing ‘The Song of Purple Summer’ from Spring Awakening and after she releases the rabbit, she turns to find the carnival people wearing masks. She runs away to warn the coven, but they follow and Hilda invites them to join the coven for lunch. When Lilith is brought up, Carcosa is surprised they pray to Lilith and not Lucifer, but his people pray to others.

Nagaina asks Nick and Sabrina about their rites and speaks of Nick sharing his needs with others and not Sabrina. Meanwhile, Ambrose and Zelda speak to Carcosa who says they may not be leaving Greendale anytime soon and Hilda speaks with Circe (Lucie Guest), who isn’t happy Hilda keeps spiders as pets and quickly directs a spell at Hilda.

Circe, Nagaina, and Carcosa speak of something being wrong with the witches, while Zelda says to the other Spellmans that the carnival folk are pagan witches. They need to send them away so they try calling a storm, but it goes away as they’re too weak and Carcosa notices this.

Dorcas (Abigail Cowen) confronts Nick about his times with the sex demons, De Sade and Salo, when she is bitten by a snake, but Nagaina sucks the venom directly out of her. Nick kills the snake and they are angered and make the claim that the pagans time has come again. Nick doesn’t want to apologise to the pagan witches and Dorcas is sent instead to give them an offering, and so Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) sends Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) to watch over her.

Say Goodbye To The Moon

Sabrina tries to understand what Nick is going through and he tells her of what happened in Hell as he did it all for her and ends with saying Sabrina wasn’t worth it all. He then goes to see Lucifer who offers him vials of red mercury and dragon’s tears for a rush if he does Lucifer a favour.

While following Dorcas, Agatha hears a noise and becomes enchanted by a flute, which is played by Carcosa in his faun appearance, which is the same as what Roz saw at the carnival. Dorcas is then approached by Nagaina. Meanwhile, the coven cover themselves in the oils and their skin turns blue as they lie down beneath the Hare Moon.

The pagans have returned to the carnival and use the moon cake to take away the Hare Moon and Zelda says they need to get back to the Academy right away. Then they find snakes within each of their beds and the pagans waiting outside, who say they must bow and pray to the old gods and they have three days to decide. Agatha then appears dancing around in a deranged state, while Dorcas has been turned to stone.

At the end of the episode, Zelda suggests they free Lucifer to destroy the pagans because it’s the lesser evil, however, Sabrina finds Nick in the dungeon instead.

Overall Thoughts?

It’s interesting learning more about who these pagans are, especially when we see a Medusa-like appearance relating to Nagaina and then learning the palm reader from the previous episode is named Circe. If that means nothing to you, Circe is a sorceress from Greek mythology.

Four episodes in, it’s been quite enjoyable to see all of these different elements being brought into the series with Herod and now Circe… It’s certainly making the world of Chilling Adventures more grander and it seems nothing is off the tables.

In the previous episode, Sabrina and Roz joined the cheerleading team, while Sabrina had to begin her duties as Queen of Hell. Her first task? Dragging souls to Hell. After sending the first to Heaven, Sabrina had to face off with Jimmy who kidnapped a young girl, which he would exchange for another seven years. Meanwhile, Prudence and Ambrose found Blackwood and took him, Judas, Judith, and a strange egg back to Greendale where they freed Nick of Lucifer and put Lucifer in Blackwood instead. Theo also met a new student by the name of Robin and a carnival has arrived in Greendale.

A Quest Begins

Roz (Jaz Sinclair) and Harvey (Ross Lynch) are watching a movie and Mr. Kinkle (Christopher Rosamond) calls it a night and asks Harvey privately if he has protection. Meanwhile, Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) share a bed, but Nick is having nightmares about Lucifer (Luke Cook) and seems to have a deformed foot.

Zelda (Miranda Otto) isn’t happy Sabrina went to Hell on her own and then suggests Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) be a teacher at the Academy, but he wants to learn more, so he’s appointed librarian. Sabrina makes plans to go to the carnival with Roz and Harvey that night, but first, she’s skipping school for the day so she can be with Nick.

Lilith (Michelle Gomez) appears as Sabrina is needed at Court and it is then Nick learns Sabrina is the Queen of Hell. She doesn’t want to leave Nick, but he insists she goes. In Hell, Sabrina outlines her reformation of Hell, which includes learning a total of the souls and a freeze on deals with mortals with herself reviewing contacts. Caliban (Sam Corlett) then arrives to challenge Sabrina as he’s gathered the 666 signatures required of him and he says they must embark on a quest for the Unholy Regalia, which are the three most powerful occult objects and lost to the ages. She accepts his challenge and first up is King Herod’s crown.

Theo (Lachlan Watson) asks Harvey about the carnival and mentions he wants to ask Robin to the carnival, but he’s never asked anyone out before, so Harvey suggests proposing it as a group date and Robin (Jonathan Whitesell) accepts.

Syrup, Spells, and Smut

At the Academy, Zelda wants to appoint Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) as Prefect of students, when Melvin (Tyler Cotton) interrupts them. Hilda (Lucy Davis) is mopping up a mass of blood as Gerald tried to fly, but instead fell and died. It seems there’s something amiss with fevers and illness going around, and Hilda mentions what the Council said about loss of potency with magic.

Zelda is thrilled to see the students studying, but they’re reading Buxom and the Beast, which is a witchy romance novel and she realises Hilda is the one who wrote it. They argue over it as Hilda has ‘portrayed’ the character’s sister in a poor light, while also doing things that don’t relate to being a witch or part of the coven.

Sabrina tells Ambrose about being Queen as she needs his help and Nick steals her away for lunch. They are interrupted by Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) and Dorcas (Abigail Cowen) who torment Nick about his foot and Lucifer, which causes him to leave in anger. Ambrose stops Sabrina from going after him as he thinks he has found the crown in…Riverdale. The pair arrive at Riverdale and retrieve the crown from inside a tree and Sabrina wants to destroy it, but Ambrose wishes to study it in hopes he can restore the coven’s power. After they leave, a maple syrup-covered Herod (Ian Rozylo) escapes from the tree.

Later on, Ambrose realises the crown could save them, but Herod puts Ambrose to sleep and takes his crown in search of Sabrina.

Nick drinks heavily at Dorian’s and Sabrina later finds him at the Academy trying to amputate his foot as he can feel Lucifer inside of him still, but Sabrina believes it’s something like PTSD.

Onwards To The Carnival

At Professor Carcosa’s carnival, Roz sees through Carcosa’s (Will Swenson) appearance and sees a faun-like creature before they all head off into the carnival. Harvey tries and fails hitting the high striker while Roz’s new popular friends watch on and when Billy (Ty Wood) tries, he hits the bell.

Meanwhile, Hilda talks to Dr. Cee (Alessandro Juliani) about what happened with Zelda and soon Dr. Cee gets down on his knee and proposes, which she says yes to. Ms. Wardwell visits a palm reader (Lucie Guest), who speaks of her fiancé Adam. As for Robin and Theo, they are on the Ferris wheel when Robin puts his arm around Theo and goes in for a kiss. However, Theo stops and tries to explain his situation and transition, but Robin doesn’t care and so they kiss.

Harvey heads into a tent and sees a woman (Vanessa Rubio) dancing with a snake as men watch on mesmerised, including his father. Meanwhile, Herod watches Nick and Sabrina on the carousel and Sabrina explains that she became Queen for him, not her father, and she asks about his time there. To avoid answering, they head into the Tunnel of Love. Not long after, Sabrina and Nick come running out with Herod attacking them. Nick removes the crown and Caliban briefly appears to steal the crown. Just as Herod is about to destroy the pair, Ambrose arrives in time to kill Herod.

Nick asks Sabrina about Caliban as they leave as he’s concerned and he decides he wants to go back to the Academy. However, he returns to Dorian’s and he believes Caliban is Sabrina’s new suitor before he takes up Dorian’s offer of entertainment and booze.

In Hell, Caliban dons the crown when Sabrina storms in and hits him twice, knocking the crown off his head. While she declares the round is his, she won’t let him take her throne and the demons begin chanting her name.

The snake charmer, palm reader, and Robin speak of Harvey, Ms. Wardwell, and Theo being virgins and that Roz may be a threat. The carnival group then plant a seed and slit the throat of a man as a blood sacrifice before chanting and calling to the old gods.

Overall Thoughts?

I thought the quest of the Unholy Regalia was quite interesting, especially when they mentioned the first item was King Herod’s crown, and it certainly added the scary and horror element in this episode that many have come to love within the series.

It’s also interesting that are essentially two baddies within the season again with the carnival folk and Caliban, but I’m particularly interested to see what the deal is with the carnival folk after Roz saw a faun-like appearance within Carcosa…

While I am slightly disappointed that Nick and Sabrina have been essentially torn apart, it’s good to see the series not glossing over traumatic events and showing how someone can turn to vices in order to cope. Here’s hoping he gets better as the season goes on.

The previous episode saw Sabrina venture to Hell with her friends to retrieve Nick, but she had to take on becoming Queen of Hell. Although she appointed Lilith as regent, she still has Caliban, Prince of Hell, challenging her for the crown. Zelda reopened the Academy with herself as Directrix and they prayed to Lilith instead of the Dark Lord, while Roz, Harvey, and Theo formed their own band, Fright Club. As for Prudence and Ambrose, they’re searching for Blackwood and the twins and met Mambo Marie who gave them a spell to find where Blackwood really is.

A Queen In Training

Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) visits Nick (Gavin Leatherwood), however, Lucifer (Luke Cook) is in charge at the moment and it seems as though Nick comes through, but Lucifer is only toying with her. Lucifer eventually allows Nick to take control and he is scared. When Sabrina exits, she accidentally disrupts the salt circle that surrounds Lucifer-Nick. Sabrina then browses the library when Cassius (Alex Diakun) appears, so she asks about soul transference and he says he will find some books for her.

Sabrina and Roz are now on the cheer squad and performing Run DMC’s ‘It’s Tricky’ and Lizzie (Jasmine Vega), another cheerleader, commends them on their work. Ms. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) was watching on; however, it seems Lilith is back to discuss some business with Sabrina. As regent, Lilith is there to train Sabrina and her first lesson is to drag two souls to Hell.

Sabrina meets Robert Robertson (Beau Daniels) who is playing a game of chess and he gave his soul to be the greatest chessmaster. Now deceased, she takes his hand and sees a black car, but another awaits and she tells him to get in the white car instead. She’s quickly transported to Hell and everyone is angered, but Lilith promises she’ll bring Jimmy Platt to Hell.

Meanwhile, Theo (Lachlan Watson) literally runs into a new student by the name of Robin (Jonathan Whitesell—yes he did play Kurtz on Riverdale in Season 3, but this isn’t a crossover), who asks for help to find his locker and then asks Theo to the pep rally.

Trouble At The Academy

Hilda (Lucy Davis) brings food to  Zelda (Miranda Otto) and it seems Hilda has been roped into helping with the Academy. Zelda speaks to the students as Directrix and then pray to Lilith, which Lucifer-Nick overhears and shifts to his own body before spewing beetles out so the witches can be reminded who their god is.

While teaching, Zelda hears laughing and dismisses her class with anger. Later on, Elspeth (Em Haine) and Melvin (Tyler Cotton) are down in the dungeons kissing when one of Lucifer’s beetles’ lands on Elspeth. Meanwhile, Zelda is in her office venting to Hilda when Melvin barges in saying Elspeth tried to kill him.

During another lesson, Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) is laughing and calling Zelda a bitch, so Zelda slaps her. Hilda and Zelda then realise after a sign that the Devil is afoot when Melvin enters as Agatha found a beetle in her hair and Zelda also had one in hers. She sends the students off to see if they can find the Dark Lord in the Academy.

Time For The Ice Cream Man To Scream

Fright Club are singing Wheatus’s ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ and interrupted by Sabrina once again. She explains dragging souls to Hell and hopes to put Lucifer in Jimmy’s deceased body so she can free Nick.

Sabrina approaches the ice-cream truck and Jimmy (Matty Finochio) says he has his extension fee ready: seven more years by giving them an innocent soul. Jimmy says she must accept his payment otherwise the young girl will die regardless as only he knows where she is. Sabrina goes to talk to Lucifer, and he explains how Jimmy was in a car accident, but Jimmy was the one who decided to pick children. Lucifer says she must get his soul or she’ll have trouble in Hell.

Sabrina and her friends find a flyer of a missing girl named Lucy (Evelyn Burke) and they hope to use Roz’s (Jaz Sinclair) cunning to find her. They visit Lucy’s mother (Kayla Deorksen) in hopes they can retrieve something so Roz will have a vision, which they do and she sees Lucy in a freezer.

Sabrina casts a spell to reach out to Lucy so they can get more details from her, but Lucy is falling asleep, so Sabrina tries teleporting blind by using Lucy’s voice as a beacon. She finds Lucy, but Jimmy has drawn sigils all around the room and Sabrina can’t escape or use her magic. Luckily, Lilith finds Sabrina and says she needs to sort out Jimmy, so she’ll see Lucy home safe.

At the pep rally, Harvey wants to take Jimmy down, but first it’s time for a cheer and they perform ‘It’s Tricky’ again. A young boy asks for an ice cream, however, it’s a glamour and Sabrina sends Jimmy straight to hell. The Kings are still against Sabrina ruling and she claims that Hell needs a makeover.

Capturing Blackwood

Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) and Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) are at Loch Ness in Scotland and spy a long-haired and bearded Blackwood (Richard Coyle) doing some kind of summoning ritual. A creature emerges from the water and gives its egg to Blackwood, who then calls out to his two teenage sacrifices. Prudence rushes towards him and Blackwood promptly kills the creature. Ambrose threatens the egg and Blackwood explains he spent 15 years in a temporal church to purify himself to wield different magic. He speaks of the old ones as well, along with the eldritch terrors.

Ambrose wants to take Blackwood and the egg back to Greendale, but the sacrifices ask them not to kill their father…it’s Judas (Darius Willis) and Judith (Whitney Peak)!

Back in Greendale, Sabrina returns home and Zelda and Hilda confront her about Lucifer-Nick, along with Cassius and the soul-transference books. Prudence and Ambrose then return with Blackwood and the twins, right when Zelda was asking who would be strong enough to be a flesh Acheron for Lucifer.

Sabrina drops Blackwood off at the dungeon to complete the soul-transference and Ambrose and Prudence put the twins in a living doll spell, so they are somewhat trapped in a dollhouse, while the egg floats in a fish tank.

At the end of the episode, Sabrina wakes Nick with a kiss, while Roz and Harvey are kissing in the back of his truck when Harvey hears something and notices a carnival in the distance.

Overall Thoughts?

While I was all for the performance of Masquerade last season, I am very hesitant about there being three scenes with singing in this episode and I feel as though many fans of Chilling Adventures will not look upon this favourably. With Riverdale, musical moments leave fans divided, especially when it comes to entire musical episodes. I don’t mind it in Riverdale, but I feel as though it detracts from this series and I don’t think the second rendition of It’s Tricky was really needed.

With all of that said, it was great to see Sabrina embracing her duties as Queen, but still struggling to fully go evil. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with this plotline of the egg and to find out exactly what the creature is. Also, I’m shipping Theo and Robin hard already.

The end of Season 2 saw Nick become a flesh Acheron to cage Lucifer and the best place to take him was to Hell. Lilith was appointed Queen and took Nick with her, while Sabrina vowed to do everything she could to rid Nick of Lucifer and bring him back to Earth. The season also saw Harvey and Roz become a couple, Susie transitioned and he is now known as Theo, Ambrose and Prudence teamed up to go after Father Blackwood who took the twins, Judas and Judith, with him.

One Month Later

The new season picks up a month after the end of Season 2 and Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) heads to Hell in search of Nick. She frees Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) from being encased in a wall and Lucifer (Luke Cook) chases after them, but they manage to escape through the gates of Hell. After telling Nick she loves him, he replies with ‘Daddy loves you too’ and turns into Lucifer…but it was all a dream. Sabrina hasn’t given up on Nick yet as she’s been going to the gates every day to try and reopen them and Harvey (Ross Lynch) accompanies her every time she tries.

At the Spellmans, Hilda (Lucy Davis) gathers the Academy’s students for breakfast and Zelda (Miranda Otto)  reminds them they have been there for a month after the collapse of the Church of Night. She wishes to reopen the Academy of Unseen Arts with herself as Directrix, but then there’s also the matter of Black Mass…who do they say it to now after everything with the Dark Lord?

The Academy is reopened and Zelda angrily smashes Blackwood’s statue into rubble when Hilda informs her the Council phoned to convene a meeting and Blackwood is meant to host. However, the Council isn’t aware of anything that has happened with the Church of Night. Later on, Hilda and Zelda say their prayers to the Dark Lord, but they feel uncomfortable doing so. Hilda suggests praying to Lilith, but Zelda doesn’t think she can take the Dark Lord from the students after what they have been through.

Hilda disguises herself as Blackwood, but she’s far too bubbly and it makes for quite the funny scene. The Council meet with fake-Blackwood and ask if he’s had trouble with the strength of his power, while also lying about being in contact with the Dark Lord. That night, the coven say their prayers to Lilith instead, which she hears and loves.

A Trip To Hell

At Baxter High, Roz (Jaz Sinclair), Theo (Lachlan Watson), and Harvey are worried about Sabrina and they want her to join the band or sign up for cheerleading with Roz. Meanwhile, the real Ms. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) is back teaching and she’s focusing on Dante’s Inferno, which is all about a journey to Hell. Sabrina goes to check on her afterwards and Wardwell can’t remember the last three months and she’s also suffering from nightmares. Sabrina then gets an idea and she goes to visit Dorian (Jedidiah Goodacre) about potential paintings that may be portals to Hell. Dorian says he has one and she can use it if she retrieves a flower, La Fleur du Mal, from the Forest of Torment for him.

Fright Club, which consists of Roz, Harvey, and Theo, sings ‘My Sharona’ when Sabrina barges in saying it’s time to go to Hell. The group of four head to Sabrina’s and cover themselves in ghastly water so they can stay hidden, while also wearing dead people’s shoes.

Dorian says they must find their way to the city of Pandemonium and Sabrina must be holding his flower to return. Upon arriving in Hell, they find themselves on the Shores of Sorrow and Sabrina asks a blonde-haired and bare-chested man (Sam Corlett) for directions. She’s told to follow the blood-red road…Wizard of Oz, anyone?

Travelling down the road, Theo sees Uncle Jesse (Jason Beaudoin) and they stray from the road briefly. Lilith (Michelle Gomez) learns Sabrina is in Hell as she speaks to a tongue-less Nick, who is chained to her throne. They continue on through the Forest of Torment and begin searching for the flower, which Sabrina and Roz find. However, Theo and Harvey are attacked by a tin man and Sabrina arrives just in time to stop him. Harvey sees that it’s his brother, Tommy (Justin Dobies), but Sabrina shoots him because it wasn’t really him.

A Quick Trip New Orleans

In New Orleans, Blackwood (Richard Coyle) is with Ms. Dubois (Nathalie Boltt, who yes, plays Penelope Blossom in Riverdale), but she soon turns into Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) and Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) appears too. They are searching for the twins, Judas and Judith, and Prudence runs Blackwood through with her blade. Unfortunately, it was one of the Judas boys wearing Blackwood as a glamour.

Prudence and Ambrose visit a vodou shop and meet Mambo Michele Marie Le Fleur, Priestess of High Haiti (Skye P. Marshall) as they need help finding Blackwood. The pair follow Mambo Marie’s instructions and pour Prudence’s blood over a world map, which shows Blackwood is in Scotland.

Claiming The Throne

Sabrina and her friends come to a red door, which says Baxter High, and Principal Hawthorne (Bronson Pinchot) traps them in a classroom, aided by Nana Ruth (L. Scott Caldwell).

Meanwhile, the Three Kings of Hell question Lilith’s right to the throne and she formulates a plan, asking her minion to bring Sabrina to her in hopes she can solve two problems at once. Now retrieved from being tortured by Hawthorne and Nana Ruth, Lilith greets Sabrina and her friends, while we see Lucifer and Nick fighting within his Nick’s mind. At dinner, Lilith says she can have Nick if Sabrina crowns Lilith as Queen of Hell to help with legitimacy.

At the court, the Kings are angered about Lilith taking the throne and instead they propose Caliban, Prince of Hell, which is the man Sabrina met on the Shores of Sorrow. He wishes to conquer the Earth and remake it as their Tenth Circle, enslaving both mortals and witches.

Sabrina looks at Nick and is dragged into his mind where Lucifer says she must take the throne to preserve the realms as the ‘old ones’ are coming. Sabrina then takes the throne and appoints Lilith as her regent, but Caliban says she has no right to rule as half-mortal. However, she dismisses the Court.

Lilith releases Jesse’s soul to Heaven and the group, including Nick, stand in a circle and return with the flower. They place Nick in the Academy’s dungeons to keep him safe.

Drinking milkshakes, Sabrina’s friends think she’s moving to Hell and she changes the conversation by agreeing to try out for cheerleading. The door then blows open mysteriously…and we later see several horse and carriages roll into Greendale…

Overall Thoughts?

I certainly didn’t think Sabrina would go to Hell, retrieve Nick, and become Queen all in the very episode of Season 3 as one would assume that would be the entire focus of the season. However, it made me even more intrigued to see what will now in the season since episode 1 was jam-packed with so many plotlines and introducing a few new characters, including Mambo Marie and Caliban. It was also very surprising to see Nathalie Boltt in the series, which will likely excite Riverdale fans and potentially means Chilling Adventures is trying to make viewers more aware of the two series being set right next to each other.

This exceptionally interesting series tells the true story of how FBI evolved into the minds of serial killers. The difficulties they faced to convince the law of their methods and ways of tracking and investigating dark and intriguing murders is a must-watch. The second season of Mindhunter has recently released on Netflix.

Wynonna Earp

This horror series is about Wyatt Earp’s descendent who protects the Purgatory town from demons and an immortal Doc. This action packed supernatural thriller show is available on Netflix and it’s a smaller gem that needs to be enjoyed by the masses.

It feels as though stories which prominently feature in this part of our collective consciousness have taken a particular precedence of late. Two in particular have received a huge following: Lucifer and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Interestingly enough, both are comics, both are in fact spin-off characters from other hugely successful series (Sabrina from the Archie comics, and Lucifer from Neil Gaiman’s seminal Sandman graphic novels), both have been adapted into television shows which have attracted a devoted following, and now both are Netflix shows. This also comes amid Good Omens being released on Amazon; even though it doesn’t feature the figure of Satan, it nevertheless points to the interest in the heaven/hell dichotomy, and further underscores Gaiman’s place within these narrative explorations as he co-wrote the novel with Terry Pratchett and is showrunner on the series.

So what the devil can we take away from the popularity of these shows? Well, I’d argue that it points to our society’s interest with what the story of the devil represents: a fall from grace, questions of redemption, the prospect of temptation, and even the thorny issue of choice. Sabrina more directly challenges the supposed truths outlaid in the Bible (see aunt Zelda teaching children that the false god sought to deny Adam and Eve knowledge and thus make them slaves) and then makes a broader criticism of blind religious faith. By contrast, Lucifer doesn’t spend a lot of time challenging biblical history but suggests that the story of the devil is more complex than may initially appear. The introduction of Eve in season four is a good example of this – see her monologue about being created to be someone else’s wife and not having any identity beyond that until Lucifer showed her she could be a person in her own right. Thus, both shows, despite the very different versions of the devil they depict, strongly feature these questions and show the characters struggling with them.

If we take the story of the devil, and indeed much of our religious teachings, as a way to regulate morality, then these shows look at questions of moral behaviour within the context of a framework which has existed to assist us in arriving at answers. Questions that seem to arise include what does it mean to be ‘good’, that we accept the punishments and torture we believe we deserve, temptation, and how much of our behaviour is determined by how other people define us. To that end, when Lucifer’s physical appearance [SPOILER] becomes increasingly demonic in season 4 as a result of his self-perception as a bad person, it serves as an exaggerated metaphor. How we see ourselves can feed into how we behave, but as the season’s finale showed, it is within our power to behave better and in so doing, change how we see ourselves.

In Sabrina, we see the manner in which the teachings of the Church of the Night and the lives of its parishioners are centred upon the pursuit of personal freedom. It thus implicitly (and explicitly) suggests that the directions on how to live and behave as laid out in the Bible and Judeo-Christian teachings are in fact a way to incite control and curtail personal freedom rather than a way to tell people how to live a morally ‘good’ life. As such, what becomes good is therefore the pursuit of personal satisfaction. However, much of the show reveals that the Church of Night’s teachings are in fact just as repressive and restrictive as those of the ultra-orthodox religions. In other words, the way Sabrina is structured almost places Sabrina in the position of Satan-esque rebel questioning what she has simply been forced to believe, and going against the moral authority as laid out by her deity.

The most significant contrast between the two shows is the fact that Lucifer is the central character in Lucifer, while in Sabrina, Satan is a largely peripheral figure whose presence is inferred more than it is definite until [SPOILER] the final episodes of season two. Whereas much of his appearance was in the incarnation of a goat-like creature until he assumes human form and becomes a significant direct actor within the denouement of the season. Moreover, Lucifer is someone struggling with the understanding of who he is and whether much of his self-understanding is predicated on the idea of playing a role that has been ascribed to him by others. The idea of the devil in therapy (and props here must go to Rachel Harris who plays Linda with finesse and wry humour) was initially hilarious to me, but as it has endured across the show’s four seasons, it becomes a space in which Lucifer genuinely exposes his vulnerabilities, and even has the occasional breakthrough, paving the way to a redemption for him.

If we return to the dichotomous way of really distilling the story of the devil (a fall from grace and a struggle for redemption vs a through-and-through force for chaos), Sabrina and Lucifer each take a side. Sabrina’s devil is a figure of self-interest, seeking to manipulate people around him to achieve his own demonic ends. By contrast, Lucifer shows us someone trying to be a better person.

They’re both shows that deal with the figure of Satan, and they’re both devilishly good. In the diametrically opposite way they both present and interpret the story of the devil, they demonstrate the malleability of the figure who has dominated so much of our society’s historic imaginings. But really, the best way to arrive at your own conclusion about this is to watch them if you haven’t, and re-watch them if you have.
