Hi, Chanel! Welcome back! It’s been five years since we last spoke for The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, so what have you been up to?

In the last five years since The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba’s release, I’ve published four novels and a short story, and am now celebrating the release of my most recent book, An Infinite Love Story.

Your latest novel, An Infinite Love Story, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Historical. Romantic. Speculative. Emotional. Cosmic.

What can readers expect?

An epic love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s Space Race with a speculative twist.

Where did the inspiration for An Infinite Love Story come from?

I was inspired by the courage and strength of the early astronaut wives as they navigated their instant celebrity and faced the danger of their spouses venturing into space and the unknown. Through my fictional heroine Vivian, I wanted to honor that sacrifice through the lens of a woman who is thrust into extraordinary circumstances.

Can you share some insight into researching for An Infinite Love Story?

Because the early astronaut wives were celebrities at the time, I read and watched as much media coverage from the late 1950s to the late 1960s as possible including features, interviews, articles, and more. Autobiographies written by some of the astronaut wives were also wonderful resources There was a wealth of information available about the Space Race because it was such a topic of global interest at the time. I read a lot of non-fiction books published during the time period and watched documentaries about the 1960s and space travel. I also travelled to museums and Kennedy Space Center to learn more about the Space Race. I’ve published several books set during the 1960s so I was able to draw on some of my earlier research as well which was helpful.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I really loved writing the love story between Vivian and Joe. It’s one of the most emotional love stories I’ve ever written and I enjoyed exploring the early days of their relationship as they fell in love in 1961 against the backdrop of some of the pivotal moments in the Space Race.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

If I ever feel disconnected from the story or characters, I typically interpret that as a sign that I need to step back and reevaluate what I’m doing because something isn’t working. My characters usually “talk” to me so that really helps me get a good sense of the direction the story should take. If they’re silent, then I know there’s a problem I need to address.

What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned since your debut novel published?

The thing that has stuck with me most is the importance of perseverance. There are so many ups and downs in publishing, and the most important thing is to remember why we write and to have that passion for books carry you through the peaks and valleys of this career.

What’s next for you?

My next book, The Diplomats, will be out in the summer of 2027. It’s set during the Cold War and features a speculative element.

Lastly, what books are you looking forward to picking up? Any you’ve read so far this year that you’ve enjoyed?

I recently read and loved an ARC of Witches Three by Kristin Judd. It’s a new historical coming out in January 2027, and it’s a powerful story of magic and motherhood that interweaves three timelines in a poignant way.

I cannot for the life of me imagine why anyone would want to live in Florida.

The house looms before me, a pale stone behemoth jettisoning from the swampy earth. It casts a long shadow, towering three stories high with a parapet on top as though it’s readying itself to guard against intruders. Its palatial size and exterior appear to have been plucked from some European city and dropped on this godforsaken plot of land in Miami. There are arches and flourishes all around the building, the fanciful embellishments reminiscent of a wedding cake’s intricate design. Enormous glass-paned windows dominate the facade, equally impressive doors leading out to a front patio set atop a stone staircase made of the palest coral that matches the house’s exterior walls.

The grass sways a few feet away conjuring images of snakes slithering through the tall blades. What sort of reptiles do they have in Florida? Large ones capable of felling a full-grown person? This feels like the end of civilization as we know it-a far cry from Manhattan and the sensibilities we have grown accustomed to.

The house is nearing completion, the progress an undeniable sign of just how long my husband has been keeping this secret.

Robert took me to Italy for our honeymoon years ago, and it appears he gathered a great deal of his inspiration from the grand houses we saw on our trip there.

There weren’t alligators in Italy, though.

And it wasn’t this hot.

A thin line of sweat trickles between my shoulder blades, my already dampened gown sticking to my skin as I trudge away from my husband’s roadster toward our future home. As a little girl sitting in the pews of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, I often thought about the fires of hell as I prayed for my immortal soul. I envisioned the devil’s playground to have a climate like this one, but in all my wild imaginings, Lucifer didn’t have iguanas.

Men mill about the property, working on the construction Robert has planned. It looks to be rough work, heavy pieces of stone being carried from one side of the house to another, the radiant sun beating down on the men. It must be hell doing such strenuous physical labor in this stifling heat.

A few cast curious glances our way, no doubt wanting to get a measure of the new owners; some low chuckles drift toward us, and my cheeks burn as I realize they’re likely laughing at me and how out of place I look in such a rugged environment. When Robert told me he was taking me for a trip to Miami for my birthday, I fancied a romantic weekend at one of the luxurious resorts that have cropped up along Florida’s east coast. I thought the surprise he mentioned would be an elegant necklace or perhaps a pair of earrings. After all, forty feels like a momentous occasion that should be marked, albeit with something smaller than real estate.

“What do you think, Anna?” my husband asks, spreading his arms out expansively as though he could encompass the whole of the property in his reach, seemingly oblivious to my obvious discomfort. “Isn’t it amazing? There’s no other house for as far as the eye can see and then some.”

I’m saved from a response by an insect swarming perilously close to my face.

It hovers in midair, likely calculating its plan of attack, before it finally retreats with an irate buzz as though recognizing me as an interloper and reluctantly ceding its territory.

I wish I could hie off with it.

There are those who hate city life, the houses close together, the streets teeming with people, the noise, and the bustle, but I’ve grown accustomed to it, find familiarity in the sounds that play in the background of my days.

The silence here is deafening.

“Anna?” Robert asks again.

I take a deep breath, lifting my skirt out of the swampy muck.

“I would like to see the rest of it,” I announce, biting back a string of blistering curses.

“You should see the best part,” Robert announces, pointing past the house to the view of Biscayne Bay. “You can’t put a price on this location.”

I could, and my price would have one zero attached to it whereas I fear Robert’s has quite a few dangling behind an astonishing number.

I trudge past the house, and I walk toward the water’s edge, careful to keep a healthy distance between me and the bay. I’ve always had an uneasy relationship with the ocean. It’s lovely to look at, but never having learned to swim, I am terrified by the crashing waves.

The closer we get to the bay, the breeze grows, offering a respite from the heat.

The water is undeniably stunning, sparkling beneath the sunlight, nothing but horizon before us. For an instant, a breath, I can understand what drew Robert to the property. I imagine there’s a great deal you would put up with for a vista such as this one.

I glance down at the rocky seawall, a nearly six-foot drop between the land and the water. The turquoise sea crashes against the coral, forming white foamy caps. It’s an abrupt change from land to ocean; should we put up a railing or something for safety?

Robert laughs when I posit the question. “And ruin the view? Besides, to do it the length of the property would cost an absolute fortune. We’d be better off just heaving our money into Biscayne Bay.”

It feels like we’re already doing that.

“What about hurricanes?” I ask, turning back to face Robert lingering behind me.

“The architect working on the house has built it to withstand hurricanes.”

Is such a thing possible? It seems hubristic to assume that anything man makes can meet Mother Nature’s fury.

I turn and peer over the edge of the seawall. Fish flit back and forth beneath the water, their bright colors like vibrant jewels flashing in the sunlight.

You don’t see that in New York, I suppose.

I lean forward-

A bloodcurdling shriek peals through the air.

We had the pleasure of chatting with Chanel about her new release The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, writing, book recommendations, and so much more!

Hi, Chanel! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Thank you so much for having me! I am a Cuban-American author who is originally from Florida, and I write historical fiction inspired by my Cuban heritage. I love to read, travel, and spend time on the water.

How is your 2021 going in comparison to that other year?

So far, fingers crossed, I am really hopeful that 2021 will be a brighter year.

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

Honestly, I can’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t reading, so there are too many books to list here that shaped me and inspired me to become a writer, but the book that probably inspired me the most to write about my Cuban heritage was Carlos Eire’s extraordinary memoir Waiting for Snow in Havana. It was the first time that I saw my family’s story reflected in a book, and it moved me tremendously and inspired me to want to write about my experiences growing up as the daughter and granddaughter of Cuban exiles who came to the United States as refugees and passed their love and memories of Cuba down to me.

When did you first discover your love for writing?

I’ve always been an avid reader and it was my passion for books that inspired me to try to write one. I started working on my first manuscript about thirteen years ago and it’s been an incredible journey along the way.

Your new novel, The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba, is out on May 4th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Adventurous, emotional, suspenseful, inspiring, informative

What can readers expect?

The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba is set during the late 19^th century and is inspired by the true story of Evangelina Cisneros, an eighteen-year-old Cuban revolutionary who was falsely imprisoned by the Spanish and subsequently became an international celebrity when her plight was used by William Randolph Hearst as a rallying cry for American intervention in the Cuban fight for independence from Spain. Evangelina’s imprisonment in the notorious Recogidas prison for women in Havana and subsequent infamy intertwines with the stories of my other two heroines: Grace Harrington and Marina Perez.

Grace is an American newspaper reporter caught up in the subscription fight between Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst in New York City, and in her quest to be the next Nellie Bly, she is drawn to Evangelina’s story. In Cuba, Marina Perez also becomes involved in the effort to save Evangelina as she works as a courier for the revolutionaries in Havana. She’s sent to a reconcentration camp with her mother-in-law and daughter while her husband fights for freedom in Cuba’s countryside.

Where did the inspiration for The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba come from?

In the summer of 2018, I was down in the Florida Keys on a research trip for last year’s book release The Last Train to Key West. While I was there, I visited the San Carlos Institute—a Cuban heritage center—and I also visited a memorial to the USS Maine. I became intrigued with the idea of writing a book set during the Cuban fight for independence from Spain and the Spanish-American War. The more I researched, the more fascinated I became with this tumultuous period in history and the people who lived during these times. When I came across the true story of Evangelina Cisneros, I knew I wanted to write about her life.

What kind of research did you have to do for The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba?

So much research! I read/watched/listened to over one hundred different sources while working on The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba. There were so many aspects to this story from the excesses of the Gilded Age setting, to the Cuban fight for independence from Spain, the explosion of the USS Maine, the Spanish-American War, and the lives of some of the central characters like William Randolph Hearst, Joseph Pulitzer, and of course, Evangelina Cisneros. I spent a lot of time going through the historical record as I tried to bring this time period to life. While I utilized many sources to craft each facet of the story, for Evangelina’s character I referred to her “autobiography,” a book that was published during her period of infamy by Hearst—and likely written and influenced by members of his staff—as my primary document.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while writing and how you were able to overcome them?

The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba is the first time I’ve written about a real-life figure as one of my heroines, so it was really important to me to represent Evangelina’s story as faithfully and accurately as possible. I used her “autobiography” as my guiding influence for that reason, but even with that, it was still at times hard to get a sense of who Evangelina really was outside of the public spectacle that was made of her life. Even her autobiography was likely written by members of Hearst’s staff, so she could be a difficult character to feel close to at times. It was important to me to give readers a sense of her spirit and to convey her love of country.

What’s the best and the worst writing advice you have received?

I think the best writing advice I’ve received is to read as much as possible. I learn so much as a reader both from other historical fiction authors and from authors in other genres.

I’m not sure that I’ve really received bad writing advice, but I think everyone has to find what works for them and follow their own path.

What’s next for you?

My next book is a dual timeline historical fiction book set in the 1930s and 1960s in Cuba, Spain, and the United States. It features three Cuban heroines whose lives unexpectedly intersect against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, the Cuban Revolution of 1933, and the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Since I introduced the Perez family in Next Year in Havana, readers have been asking for the rest of the Perez sisters’ stories, and I’m excited to share that this next book which will be out in 2022 features Isabel Perez’s story as one of the heroines.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

I’ve been on an amazing reading streak lately and I’ve read and loved some fabulous ARCs of historical fiction releases that will be out later this year. I highly recommend Island Queen by Vanessa Riley, Sisters in Arms by Kaia Alderson, The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray, and The Riviera House by Natasha Lester.

A book that weaves together the stories of remarkable women always hits my sweet spot, so when I picked this book up thinking I would do just a little lazy Saturday morning reading, I soon realised I could not put it down. Each character is so unique and interesting, and written so incredibly well, that within just a few pages each already feels like a living, breathing person. It takes no time at all to get completely invested into their lives.

The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 is a very real event, in fact to this day it remains one of the three worst Atlantic hurricanes on record. It is against the background of this looming storm that we meet the three magnificent characters that the story revolves around.

Helen is a kind waitress in a diner and is very heavily pregnant. She’s a local in Key West who seems to brighten the day of most of her customers while she herself lives a rather miserable life in a run-down beach shack with her physically abusive fisherman husband. One customer comes to her aid and begins to change the course Helen believed her life was set on.

Mirta is on her honeymoon in the Keys after just marrying an American man who is a virtual stranger to her. Back in Havana, her family had fallen on difficult times financially as well as politically. This arranged partnership would benefit her family greatly. Slowly, however, she is beginning to learn of her new husband’s notoriety and how dangerous her new life may be.

Elizabeth has come down to the Keys from New York searching for someone. At the same time, she is also searching for a solution of how to save her family after the devastating Wall Street collapse. As a young, single woman she is not safe investigating the Veterans Camps with their poor sanitation conditions and thousands of strangers. Fortunately, she finds a rather unexpected ally along her journey, though he has secrets, too.

The stories of all three women are fascinating and beautifully written. Each of their stories is completely unique and are interwoven beautifully. In the events of each story there are men involved, but our three women are always the focus. Each of them feel incredibly modern, but still fit perfectly into the 1930’s narrative.

The storm looming over the novel is a character in and of itself and it is written ass perfectly as Cleeton’s human characters. As someone who lives in a hurricane-prone area, I admit to being quite particular about how hurricanes are described or used in stories. Cleeton does an outstanding job of capturing and conveying the attitudes of locals before storms move in, the general disagreement about where storms will go, and the sheer panic when it is suddenly too late to decide about evacuation and you are left to your own devices.

Without a doubt, this is one of those books that as soon as you finish it you will be handing it off to your best friend. It is a great book club selection, and will make the perfect summer beach read. I highly recommend it especially for fans of Chanel Cleeton’s previous novels as well as fans of All the Ways We Said Goodbye or Fountains of Silence. This is another masterwork of historical fiction.
