Hi, Catherine! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I’m an author, actress and screenwriter based in London. I’m married and I have two children under 5 plus I’m giving serious thought to adding a dog to the mix, at some point. I’ve written/published 5 novels as well as writing and producing 1 TV series (The Ex Wife, Paramount Plus). And as an actress I (most notably) played Mabel Lane Fox in Downton Abbey.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

At school. I read a lot. I was sent away to boarding school at the age of 7, full time, so I would fill my after-school hours with books. Then, I guess I started writing consciously during my A levels. I remember being incredibly proud that my creative writing mock paper was handed around other classes as an good example of ‘show don’t tell.’ Then I got into drama school and acted full time for 13 years until I freaked out at about 34 that I might only have a few good years of tv/film work left in me and decided to try and write a novel…and the rest is history.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

The first book you ever remember reading: Douglas Adams – Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy.

The one that made you want to become an author: Oh hard one. Not sure there is one in particular. But authors like: Shirley Jackson, Chuck Palanuick, Stephen King, Angela Carter and more…But for the actual sheer perservance to sit down and write a book, beginning to end, I’d say it was: What I talk about when I talk about running by Murakami.

The one that you can’t stop thinking about: House of Leaves – Mark Z Danielewski, I mention this so much I may as well be his one woman press team lol! But it’s brilliant. A found footage style thriller about a house. It contains notes written by a family, and others, who have discovered that the house they are living in is much larger on the inside than on the outside. As you read each person’s notes you discover that each inhabitant tried to map the ongoing space they found beneath the house and they document their findings. Chilling, with the feel of a true crime.

Your latest novel, Look in the Mirror, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Lucy Foley summed it up perfectly in exactly 5 words: ‘An utter white knuckle ride’.

What can readers expect?

A subversion of usual phycological thriller plotting, it’s very fast paced, and very twisty, with an ending I can pretty much guarantee you will not see coming. It does not go in the direction you think it will!

Where did the inspiration for Look in the Mirror come from?

Classic escape/survival game stories: Stephen King’s Running Man, Battle Royale, Hunger Games and the growing and morphing appetite society has for increasingly personality-driven reality competitions. The commodification of identity, in reality programming, and the potentially stultifying idea that we can be pigeon holed by it inspired me.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I think I write as an actor. I need every character I write to have a life outside of the story, a clear and life affirming super objective that the story often only gets in the way of them achieving. I love all of my characters, and I write them so that if they ever get played by an actor there is a lot in there for them to play with.

What’s next for you?

I’ve just finished adapting a #1 Sunday Times Bestseller into a film and we’re currently waiting for news on a lead actress and director. I’m also developing two tv series with production companies and working on my next book.

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed so far this year and are there any that you can’t wait to get your hands on?

I’m late to the party on PIRANESI by Suzanna Clarke but I absolutely LOVED it. Her world building is hauntingly beautiful and monolithic – it stays with you. I can’t wait to read her next whatever it is…

Also, I loved BIG SWISS by Jen Beagin, and THE MINISTRY OF TIME by Kaliane Bradley and BREASTS AND EGGS by Mieko Kawakami.

Will you be picking up Look in the Mirror? Tell us in the comments below!

For those within the northern hemisphere, it is summertime and summer to me means reading thrillers. There is something to be said about reading the darkness that literature has to offer when everything is bright and sunny. I just can’t get enough of the foreboding, edge-of-your-seat feeling that a great thriller can give. So, here are some thrillers that are worth binging this summer, or really anytime that you need to read a great book!

You by Caroline Kepnes
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This book is dark, deliciously twisted, and completely un-put-downable! Joe meets Guinevere Beck when she walks into his bookstore. They share some flirtatious conversation as he rings her up and she leaves. But that isn’t enough for Joe. He needs to know more about her, so he searches her name on Google. Soon he finds everything he needs to know through her Facebook and Twitter accounts and creates a way to run into her again. He quickly becomes obsessed and begins taking over Beck’s life. Kepnes does an amazing job of keeping you on the edge of your seat and unable to decide if you’re on Joe’s side or completely horrified by what he’s doing.

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This is the type of thriller that will hook you instantly. Jar of Hearts is told in alternating perspectives. Geo and Kaiser who were part of a best friend trio when they were teenagers, now Kaiser is a cop and Geo is going to prison. Their third, Angela, disappeared when they were sixteen and her body has been found years later in the woods behind Geo’s childhood home.

Calvin is the boy Geo was in love with when she was sixteen. He noticed her the way no one else did, but their relationship was dangerous. And one night it exploded when Calvin killed her best friend Angela. Now Geo is in prison for keeping the secret all these years. The narrative goes back and forth between past and present and it keeps you guessing about what really happened that night and what is still happening as more bodies are turning up.

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This is the kind of thriller that gives you that foreboding feeling from page one. You know there is something lurking, just beyond your grasp, but you just can’t quite seem to figure out what it is.

The story follows a couple—Erin is a documentary film maker and Mark has just lost his job. However, they’re getting married and going on the perfect honeymoon to Bora Bora. While they are out diving and enjoying the beautiful ocean, they come across tons of paper floating in the ocean, a plane wreck, and a bag. The contents of this bag send the couple on a dark and dangerous journey.

Much of the book is spent in Erin’s head and there are times when as a reader you can tell there are things that Erin is missing, not seeing fully, but you aren’t quite sure what is happening either. It leads to the perfect ominous, thriller reading experience.

Our House by Louise Candlish
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

A brand new domestic thriller and it’s one that keeps throwing twists even after I thought I knew what was going on.

The story begins with Fiona, Fi, coming home after a weekend away to find someone else moving into her home. She cannot figure out what is happening, this must be a mistake or some sick joke. She and her husband Bram have separated, but still share the home in an effort to make the separation easier on their children. But it is this separation that has started the downward spiral that led to Fi’s current situation.

This story is told in multiple different viewpoints. We get things unfolding in real-time, from both Fi and Bram’s points of view, but also Fi’s story as told through a podcast and Bram’s story told through a final letter. It is such a clever story and one that left me slightly terrified as a fellow home-owner.

Bring Me Back by B.A. Paris
Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository

This was a wild-ride of a thriller. So much happens and it is completely addictive. This is the story of Layla and Finn who were seemingly happy and in love. They were on vacation when Finn stopped to use the restroom and when he came back to the car Layla was gone. It’s been ten years since Layla’s disappearance and Finn is now engaged to a woman who happens to be Layla’s sister, Ellen. But just when they’re about to get married, strange things start happening. Someone reports spotting Layla. Then Finn begins finding items from Layla’s past; things that only he and Layla know about. Is she still alive somewhere?

Bring Me Back was one of those thrillers that begs you to pick it back up every time you set it down. And you won’t be able to stop thinking about it until you turn the last page.

All of these thrillers are fantastic for any time you need a quick and enjoyable read!

If Indiana Jones lived in the X-Files era, he might bear at least a passing resemblance to Nolan Moore — a rogue archaeologist hosting a documentary series derisively dismissed by the “real” experts, but beloved of conspiracy theorists. Nolan sets out to retrace the steps of an explorer from 1909 who claimed to have discovered a mysterious cavern high up in the ancient rock of the Grand Canyon. And, for once, he may have actually found what he seeks. Then the trip takes a nasty turn, and the cave begins turning against them in mysterious ways.
