Hi, Camryn! Welcome back! How have you been since we last spoke for the release of Friday I’m In Love in 2023?

I can’t believe it’s been that long! I’ve been okay! Trying my best!

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

Oh man, I was really little. I remember keeping a composition notebook where I wrote a sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, which I’m pretty sure I saw in theaters in 2005 or 2006. So for that long! A lot of teachers encouraged my love of reading and writing, which just encouraged me to do it more.

• The first book you ever remember reading: The Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo
• The one that made you want to become an author: Percy Jackson or Ella Enchanted
• The one that you can’t stop thinking about: I think about the Princess Diaries series a lot. I thought about applying to Sarah Lawrence because that’s where Mia wants to go.

Your latest novel, In Between Days, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Funny! Raw, emotional, nuanced, complicated.

What can readers expect?

They can expect a really heartfelt and emotional story about family, both ones you’re born into and the ones that you make, explorations of grief, and a sapphic love story set in a bookstore!

Where did the inspiration for In Between Days come from?

I actually wrote a screenplay version of this story years ago in college for one of my screenwriting classes. My professor gave me a lot of compliments on it, but the voice didn’t really feel like me, I think because of the rules of screenwriting. Mira seemed like a really internal character, which was hard to get across in a screenplay, and I really wanted to be inside her head. A book seemed like a great way to do that, especially an epistolary one where we see all her thoughts in her journal.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I really enjoyed writing this story through Mira’s journal. All of my YA books are from a first person point of view, so I’m usually very close to the character, but this was the closest I’ve ever been. I was trying to figure out how Mira would react to things right away. It was really fun to write her with a lack of a filter in a way.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

My own father passed away almost eight years ago, and even though the circumstances in the book are completely different from my own, writing so deeply about grief was difficult for me. It could be really emotional. I felt like this is the book I really had to write, since I had so much to say about grieving as a young person, and feel like it can be so lonely to lose a parent or someone close to you when you’re younger. Not only is our society in general not really sure how to handle grief, but young people generally haven’t experienced that type of loss, so your friends don’t really relate to you. I wished that I had a book like this when I was going through my own grief journey, so I thought about that whenever I found it difficult to keep going.

Your books incorporate a diverse range of themes and topics, such as In Between Days exploring queerness and grief. Has your process for approaching emotionally heavy or personal themes shifted throughout your career?

I honestly think I’m more daunted to do it the more books I write. When I was younger, I knew that I was approaching big topics, but had a lot of confidence about my ability as a writer, in my research, and also in resources like sensitivity readers and interviewing people I knew to help me tell the stories well. I think that writing has generally gotten harder as I’ve gotten older, since I have higher standards for myself, and I know what I want and what I don’t. I also think there’s more gravity to big topics like grief! I’ve taught writing classes and done a lot of school visits, so there are faces to my readers now in a way there wasn’t necessarily earlier in my career.

So basically, I think about it a lot more, fret a lot more, and check in with my friends and critique partners more, and make a lot of notes for my editor to go over with me to make sure I’m telling the story in the best way possible.

What do you hope your readers take away from In Between Days?

Oh man, several things! One thing that was really important to me was showing that it’s not just possible to have friendships and mentorships with older queer people, but also really cool! I think we have so much to learn from older queer people in our communities, but they’re also just cool people, and it’s really rewarding to have connections with people who are older than you. Richard and Mira’s relationship is so special, and I hope that inspires people!

I also want people to have more empathy for each other. Mira learns to be more empathetic to other people, both inside her family and out, and the people she makes connections with learn how to be empathetic about the grief she’s struggling with. My experience of losing a parent has been really difficult, but I’ve formed a lot of bonds with people since then – I’ve joined a grief group, bonded with older people in my community, and even formed tighter bonds with family members I didn’t speak to frequently. I hope readers look at who needs some empathy in their own lives and try to help out.

What’s next for you?

I’m working on my next YA book, due in 2028! And what I said about every book being harder to write is very true. Wish me luck!

I’m really excited for Seventh Period Girl by Joya Goffney, Behind Five Willows by June Hur, and This Must Be the Place by Kelly Quindlen! So far this year, I’ve really liked The Moon Without Stars by Chanel Miller and Love by the Book by Jessica George.

Hi, Camryn! Thanks so much for joining us! Why don’t you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m the author of three young adult novels, a recent college graduate, part-time bookseller, and a fan of classic romantic-comedies. I’m excited for the release of my new book!

Lightning round: What never fails to make you smile, what’s a compliment you never get tired of hearing and what song would you put on every single playlist?

I always smile at dogs with little shoes. I never get tired of being complimented on my movie picks for movie night. I would always put a song by The Cure on a playlist.

Tell us about Friday I’m in Love! What can readers expect?

Friday I’m in Love is about a girl named Mahalia who decides to have a lavish coming-out party where she’ll celebrate her sexuality with friends and family, but keeps running into financial issues while also juggling a crush on a new girl at school. I was inspired by a lot of teen movies from the early 2000s and really wanted to write a Black queer ode to them.

Friday I’m in Love is your third novel and your first venture into rom-coms! What were highlights and struggles you faced while writing?

I think it was hard to actually make sure it was funny! Rom-coms make it look easier than it is. I didn’t want the laughs to be too cheap, but I also didn’t want it to feel like I was shoving laughs in at every available moment, so we had to find a balance.

Mahalia deeply connects to music in this book, especially older songs and bands. What songs would need to be on your perfect mixtape?

I think every song on Beyonce’s Renaissance, plus all of the disco that inspired it.

Friday I’m in Love is, beyond being an uplifting queer read, also very character-driven. Mahalia deals with a variety of complex issues from financial struggles to racism and homophobia, yet never gives up fighting for herself and her dream party. What do you want readers to take away from Mahalia’s story?

I really want people to know that they are more than just the struggles that they go through, especially if they’re marginalized. I also wanted people to lean into joy, even when things are difficult. Things have been hard for pretty much everyone the past few years. We’ve all dealt with that in different ways, but I hope this book is a bit of a salve for that.

And speaking of dream parties! What are the three essentials every coming out party needs?

An iconic playlist, a team of gay friends, and rainbow snacks, of course!

Friday I’m in Love features so many moments of black, queer joy! Without spoiling too much, did you have a favorite scene between Mahalia and Siobhan while writing?

The scene in the auditorium was a delight to write.

If Friday I’m in Love were to be adapted into a movie, what three songs would have to be on the soundtrack?

I’d really want Silk Chiffon by Muna, Just Like Heaven and Friday I’m in Love by the Cure. A lot of the Cure! They should be featured prominently.

With Friday I’m in Love releasing soon, are you already working on another project? If so, can you share a tidbit about it with us?

I’m really in between projects right now! I have some ideas, but am still in the early stages, and get superstitious about sharing. But I definitely want to write more rom-coms.

Last but not least, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Ah! I’m currently reading Chloe and the Kaishao Boys by Mae Coyiuto, which comes out in March, and I’m in love with it. The voice reminds me of Meg Cabot and the Princess Diaries, especially if you consider meddling family members, but it’s so funny and delightful in a way that doesn’t feel forced at all. I’d love to write something like it.

Excited about the idea, Mahalia starts saving money, taking on extra shifts at her afterschool job and awkwardly flirting with Siobhan, all so she can live her dream. But before she knows it, Mahalia is faced with unfinished homework, unpaid bills piling up and enough drama in her blossoming friend/relationship with Siobhan to fill a Shakespeare novel. With the universe interfering in the worst of ways, can Mahalia make her party dreams still come true?

My Super Sweet Sixteen but make it gay? Sign me up! What makes Friday I’m in Love stand out is the way Garrett manages to connect so many plot threads into a cohesive, enjoyable story. From including lighthearted moments such as trying to figure out the perfect songs for a mixtape or planning the perfect queer coming out party to more complex topics such as financial struggles and friendship dynamics, this book delivered a well-rounded story.

Mahalia is a flawed character you can’t help but love. There are some choices made that bring unexpected consequences but nevertheless, Mahalia perseveres and learns from her mistakes. There’s of course also a romance that adds its own hurdles to the narrative but there are also incredibly sweet and fluffy moments between Siobhan and Mahalia that readers will love to swoon over. While reading the back and forth between Siobhan and Mahalia can at times get frustrating, I think that’s the intention behind it—to feel as torn as Mahalia does when it comes to whether Siobhan actually has feelings for her or is just dragging her along. Garrett aptly shows how difficult it can be to never quite know whether you’re being friendzoned or whether there’s more. Siobhan also goes through her own journey of accepting her sexual orientation and learning to be true to her heart which I know readers will connect with.

A personal favourite of Friday I’m in Love is Mahalia and her relationship with money. I appreciate realistic depictions of money issues in novels, especially geared toward teens, and Garrett completely delivered. The anxieties Mahalia feels whenever money becomes a topic in her low-income household, yet still wanting to treat herself to a bash celebrating her queerness was a gripping narrative and left me rooting for everything working out. While I won’t spoil the outcome, I will say that I loved the focus on how money isn’t necessarily what makes or breaks a party and that support often comes from unexpected sources.

Another highlight I need to address is the way music is weaved into the narrative. Beyond giving this stunning novel its title (if you haven’t heard of the song Friday I’m in Love, listen to it right now, please), Mahalia often refers older songs and bands that made my little music-loving heart dance. Now, I can’t say whether Gen Z is actually as invested in *gulps* retro music, but I (a millennial) adored the way Mahalia connected to iconic bands such as The Cure, The Beatles and so many more. Also, can we please bring back the act of making someone a mixtape as a gift? It’s the most romantic gesture, like, ever. Anyway, if you’re a fellow music fanatic, you’ll love the little nods and mentions!

Black History Month is a month to reflect on the African American experience and how they have shaped society. So, what better way than to explore books about black main characters written by black authors? In Full Disclosure, Simone is a young woman who’s getting a fresh start at a new school. She’s making new friends, is a student director in the school’s production of Rent, and crushing on Miles, who makes her feel like the most important person in the room. The last thing that she’d want to get out is her HIV positive status. Unfortunately, that’s just what someone threatens when she starts dating Miles. With sex becoming a possibility, she must disclose her status to Miles, but her fear of his reaction is holding her back. As much as she’d like to keep her secret, Simone must take charge and own her own truth…even if it means facing her biggest fears.

Oh my gosh, the beginning of this book is so hilarious and awkward and everything that I didn’t know I wanted in Simone’s first visit to the gynaecologist. Simone is pretty down to earth and naturally curious, I loved her personality so much. Her friendship with besties, Lydia and Claudia, is also sweet and hilarious. I also don’t think I’ve ever bonded more with a book because of the musical mentions than in this one. Simone is the student director of a production of Rent in her school, and she talks about some of my favourite musicals through her interactions with Miles. Of course, there’s lots of fun things happening with Miles in this story, bonding over musicals just happens to be one of them.

The character development in this story is handled very well in my opinion. I feel like Simone has had to grow up very fast because of her HIV status and hasn’t truly gotten the chance to be a carefree teenager. The tension that she feels because she keeps secrets from her best friends, and even a potential love interest tell you so much about her. It’s also wonderful to read that Simone is not the only one growing in this story. This is one of the few stories that I was happy to see growth by more than just a select few. There’s just so much to learn that Simone DOESN’T HAVE to teach us. It’s a lesson that many (including myself) ought to know and remember.

I’ll be honest, I definitely learned quite a lot more about HIV from this story. Things like U=U (undetectable equals untransmittable), virus counts, and just simply the lengths that people with HIV have to go through to live mostly normal lives. This is tackled again and again in Full Disclosure, because Simone has to make decisions about who to tell about her status, and how it will impact her. The emotional toll this takes when she’s going through this is brutal, because it’s coming from a young woman who doesn’t necessarily like to be vulnerable.

There’s so many layers to this story that I’m excited for readers to unpack. It has this almost romantic-comedy sort of feeling, with a more serious message to readers about living their truths. We’ve got a story full of diversity, both in ethnicity and in sexuality. Camryn Garrett doesn’t shy away from talking about teens and sexuality…more importantly, Garrett establishes that it’s okay to talk about sex. One of my favourite scenes is in the story is related to sex, and involves *ahem*…condoms.

This story is definitely a 10/10 for me. It has an incredibly memorable character who I feel many will identify with. I hope that this story resonates with anyone that is in need of these words, and if you’re even the least bit curious about this title, I encourage you to add it to your TBR and read it when you have the chance; I don’t think you’ll regret it.
