How has your work in the video game industry influenced your writing?

— I learned to write video games after I’d published 3 books. Sometimes video games will contain blocks of prose, in journal entries or inventory logs, for example. But most writing in video games is done in script format, with dialogue lines, action lines, and “ALT” lines if players need certain hints, trigger certain gameplay elements or tutorials, or fulfill some other criteria. My work in video games has taught me to write snappy dialogue that moves like an action movie, in which every line packs a punch and does a lot of heavy lifting to progress the story.

Why do you write for teens specifically?

—For many of us, the teen years are extremely formative, full of dynamism and disillusionment. They’re the years in which you’re building off the foundation that you were raised to believe, using blocks from the world around you. And sometimes, those two don’t marry well and things fall apart, and you learn to use other building materials, or break down the foundations you were taught and build whole new ones that better suit you. I love writing about people doing their best as they grow up.

What do you think makes your book unique to the market?

It’s FAST. It takes off from page 1 and doesn’t stop til the end. Around 30 different poignant topics are touched upon including climate change, gentrification, “wokeness” in media, classism, racism, hostile architecture, visible vs. invisible marginalization, radicalization vs. activism, corporate marketing masking as activism, the school-to-prison pipeline, Earth stewardship, Indigenous relationship with Eco-activism, neurodivergence, gender identity, predatory lending and the income gap, welfare and public assistance, etc. This book is about 4 teens taking on the world as it is and figuring out how to change it for the better.

EXCERPT

It’s a regular Tuesday morning.
My mama is crocheting, my zaza is washing zucchini from the garden, my sister, Ava, is writing in her journal, and I’m trying

to figure out where this QR code clue leads so my team can win this week’s cryptology puzzle and stay at the top of the Vault leaderboard.

My fingers fly across my phone keyboard under the table as I stare absentmindedly into my almond-milk oatmeal with raisins and pepitas.

ME: I’ve looked at everything. Code might be a dead end.

At least I hope that’s what I typed. Autocorrect gods, take pity on me. Phones aren’t allowed at the table, or in the morning before school, but I have a clue to find.

Just as I’m about to let go of my phone, I feel four distinct buzzes in my hand. My phone only buzzes when I get a text in all caps, and the team only texts me in all caps when they’ve got a lead.

I have to look.

“So, Ava-bear,” says Mama, setting her crochet project down and leaning her elbows on the table. “How’s journaling going?”

Ava sighs and runs a hand through her long dark hair, pulling it all to one side and twisting it around itself. She’s only older than me by a couple of years, but she has the cynicism of someone twice her age.

“I mean, it’s going,” she says, her voice a low early-morning croak. “I’m doing affirmations right now. None have come true, but they’re making me more optimistic, I think.”

“Good.” Mama smiles, tucking a loose strand of hair behind Ava’s ear. Mama reaches into the tiny satchel at her hip, and I wonder if I have time to glance at my phone, but she’s too fast. She pulls a roller ball out of her bag, takes Ava’s wrist in her hand, and rolls the oil gen- tly over her veins.

“Lavender for calm,” Mama says, still smiling, “and . . .” She pulls a crystal on a string out of her bag and slips it over Ava’s head. “Blue tourmaline for tranquility.”

The concentration grooves between Ava’s eyebrows melt away, and a smile spreads across her face. “Thanks, Mama,” she says.

“I know you don’t think they work,” says Mama, pulling out another crystal on a string and turning to me, “and you probably won’t until you really need it. But even if it only works as a visual reminder of what it represents, it works.”

The string goes over my head, and I look down at the pointy purple crystal sitting in the middle of my chest.

“Amethyst today,” says Mama, “for protection.”
That’s a new one.
“Why do you think I’ll need protection today?” I ask. She shrugs

and scratches around a bandage taped to the inside of her forearm, covering a new tattoo.

“Just a feeling,” she says, leaning in and kissing my forehead. “There are a lot of protests going on downtown today—okay, Juju- bean? Be careful.”

My phone buzzes again. My heart skips.
I glance at the clock. 7:47 a.m.

Too early to leave for school.
I open my mouth to make an excuse to leave the table besides the fact that I want to go look at my phone. Maybe I forgot my backpack upstairs. Shit, it’s on the floor next to me. My phone? Nah. As soon as I stand up, everyone will be able to see its imprint through my sweat- shirt pocket. Maybe I need to pee? Nah, Mama knows that one well.

Before I can think of an excuse that will work, the conversation continues.

“She’s right,” says Zaza, glancing over at all of us at the table and setting a colander full of zucchini on the kitchen counter. “Lots of protests. Everyone’s angry right now.”

“People are always angry,” Ava mutters, shutting her journal and taking a sip of her breakfast tea. “If it’s not one thing, it’s another.”

“Well, today the protests involve the garden,” says Mama, “so even I’m a little angry. We’ve had refineries in Puget Sound, but never one smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood. And cer- tainly never one that’s wiped out a community garden.”

Never mind. The puzzle can wait.

Mama’s forehead is furrowed, and her fingers whip the yarn around the needle lightning-fast. I clutch the crystal around my neck and wish there was something I could give her to make her feel better through all of this. But all I have are my words.

“I don’t think it’ll go through, Mama,” I say.

“It is going through, Jax,” Ava insists with a finality that sours my stomach. “The city has officially submitted a notice of intention to repurpose the land.”

“But we’re in the middle of Beacon Hill,” I argue, as if fighting Ava is fighting what’s inevitably going to happen to our garden. “Why would they put an oil refinery here?”

“Likely because we’re by an airport,” she grumbles. “How much do you wanna bet Roundworld has a deal with King County Inter- national to supply their fuel?”

“We’re also in the not-so-expensive part of Beacon Hill, Jax,” says Zaza, carrying the colander to the kitchen table. Before they sit, they lean down and give Mama’s lips a quick kiss good morning. Zaza pulls out a kitchen chair and settles into it, peeler in hand, and soon peels begin falling into a bowl in their lap as they continue, “And the gar- den is a community space. State-provided. Land isn’t cheap in Puget Sound like it used to be, so it’s fair game for them to take back and repurpose whenever they want.”

I can feel my blood warming with rage. How the hell is this legal? Matter of fact, how the hell hasn’t someone stepped in to stop this? Some rich company must have a bunch of money to throw at this for environmentalism clout. Maybe one will buy Roundworld out of the land? Protests are great and all, but how has no one from the bottom tunneled in from the inside? Actually, why hasn’t the Order gotten wind of this shit? They were there to rat out social media accounts after the Capitol invasion, and after the Taliban took over Afghanistan. Not that Mama’s garden is anywhere near the same scale of importance in the world, but . . .

It is in my world.

Morris recently took time out of her busy schedule (she just had a baby in November!) to answer a few questions for The Nerd Daily. Read on below for her thoughts on writing from the perspective of a young male as opposed to a young female, what she hopes readers will take away from this book, the superpower she would like to have for a day, and much more!

Hi Brittney and thanks so much for taking the time to answer a few questions for The Nerd Daily! To start with, tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is Brittney Morris, and I live in Philly. I’m the author of SLAY, THE COST OF KNOWING, MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES – WINGS OF FURY, and I’ve written for video games including The Lost Legends of Redwall and Subnautica: Below Zero. I have a degree in economics from Boston University, and in my spare time, I enjoy playing indie video games and traveling.

Your new novel, The Cost of Knowing, comes out on April 6, 2021. Formal synopsis aside, how have you been describing the book to others?

I’ve been describing it as DEAR MARTIN meets THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END. Both of those books had such an impact on me.

In the Acknowledgements you share that The Cost of Knowing “started off as a story all about Black boy joy”; however, as you got further into it, you felt that some key aspects of being a Black man weren’t being acknowledged. Could you talk a bit more about the story you started with and how this shift in your approach shaped the final product?

Sure! I started with a story about a happy-go-lucky Black teen named Alex who worked in an ice cream shop and was super colorful and joyful, but the more I wrote his story, the more I felt I was doing a disservice to Black men, painting this picture of the freedom that I wish for them without acknowledging the unique trials they face that make being joyful such a tall order.

You also note that your intention was to write a book that speaks “alongside” Black men, not “over” them — I love this statement! What were some of the differences you found in writing from the perspective of a young male as opposed to a young female, like in your first novel SLAY?

Yes! Writing from Kiera’s perspective was so close to my experience, while writing from Alex’s prospective required way more thought and investment and most importantly, listening. While Kiera faced sexism in people assuming the developer of her game was male, and she had access to strong women in her life who rallied around her and helped her reach her dreams, Alex faces sexism in a myriad of other ways — pressure to provide for his home, being labeled the ‘man of the house,’ even being expected to be hyper sexual and/or dangerous simply because of his gender. Finding camaraderie among other men is also a challenge for him, given the toxicity that’s present in his life in various ways.

Time — the past, the present, and the future — is a central concept in The Cost of Knowing. It occurred to me that readers are likely to call this novel very “timely,” based on the increased attention the Black Lives Matter movement has received in the U.S. over the past year. However, there are multiple points throughout the book where you remind readers how embedded racism, discrimination, and harm against Black people have been in our country for hundreds and hundreds of years. What do you hope young readers will take away from the book with regards to the past, the present, and the future?

I hope that readers who see themselves in this book will realize that they’re not alone. And I hope readers see all the ways racism is embedded, to the point where it’s a part of our daily lives that those with racial privilege often take for granted. Sometimes, even with the best of intentions.

Okay, it may be cheesy, but I have to ask … If you had the chance to take on Alex’s ability to see the future for just one day, would you do it? Why or why not? Is there a different superpower you would rather have for a day?

Absolutely not! I’m already a wildly anxious person with depression. I think being able to see the future would stress me out to the max. I’d love to be able to teleport though!

I understand you have a BA in Economics, and I always find it interesting when people have varied interests, careers, and hobbies! So, I’m curious … What led you to become a writer?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. Then, somewhere down the line, someone told me to major in something that will pay the bills (read: feed the capitalist machine), so I chose economics with a focus in finance. While I still have a passion for financial education and empowerment at all income levels (especially when it comes to predatory lending), writing is what really make me feel like I’m making magic.

The past year has obviously been an unexpected and difficult one. How has your writing and creative process looked or been affected over this time?

Oh boy, yes it has. Well, I had a baby in November, so my writing process has been kind of ‘whenever I get a spare minute’ lately. I’ve also lost the ability to go to coffee shops, otherwise I’d bring the baby with me and hang out with him there all day, letting him nap while I write. So it’s mostly, sitting at home, getting outside in the fresh air when I can, and doing lots and lots of meditation.

Your first novel, SLAY, was a great success and I have no doubt The Cost of Knowing will be too! Do you have future plans to test the waters of adult fiction also, or do you think YA will remain your niche?

Aw, thank you! I think adult fiction would be fun one day, although lately I’ve had an idea for a middle grade bouncing around in my head.

At the age of 16, Alex Rufus has been through enough loss for a lifetime. Years ago his parents were killed in a car accident, leaving Alex and his younger brother, Isaiah, to be raised by their Aunt Mackie in a neighbourhood outside of Chicago. His best friend Shaun was then taken from him a few years later in another accident. There was one thing different with this accident though… Alex saw it coming. You see, following the death of his parents, Alex found himself with the ability to see the future through the objects — and even people — he touches. For example, when he slips his phone out of his pocket, he sees a flash of himself unlocking the phone right before he takes this action. When he touches something with more frequency, like the steering wheel of his car, he sees further down the road, years ahead to when the car will be totalled.

Alex does his best to maintain a normal life despite the constant barrage of future images he must withstand. He goes to school and has plans to attend college, he works in an ice cream shop and does yard work for his neighbours. His relationship with Isaiah has grown strained over the years, but he has a girlfriend he cares deeply about: Talia, Shaun’s younger sister. Alex is managing, more or less, until one day he finds an old family photo which triggers images of his brother’s impending death. In mere moments, the world is turned upside down as Alex battles internally over what to do. Can he change the future, even though he has never been able to before? And, if not, is there enough time left to repair the rift in his relationship with Isaiah? Can he face the reality of the situation and redeem himself from the failure he feels following Shaun’s death? Perhaps find a way to make something good come from this horrific situation?

A great part of the storytelling in The Cost of Knowing hinges on the concept of time: learning to process and accept one’s past, remain present in the current moment, and cope with being able to see the future. Morris draws a striking parallel between the anxiety Alex feels due to his magical abilities and the undue burden he faces as a young Black man in the U.S. Alex’s difficulty focusing on the present while attempting to ward off visions of the future is not so different from the constant awareness he must have of what could happen to him out in the world based solely upon the colour of his skin. With his ability to see the future in everything he touches, Alex lost the privilege of being a child, innocent and free, at a young age; he holds a weight much heavier than any sixteen year old should. This burden also reflects the mental weight of living in the wake of hundreds of years of discrimination and racism; the generational trauma and very real physical consequences faced by young Black men in America still to this day.

Because of the prominence of the Black Lives Matter movement in the U.S. over the past year, there will likely be a temptation for readers and reviewers to frame this book as “timely.” But let’s be clear, as Morris is in this novel: racism is not a new topic. The heightened risk of being killed — by a member of law enforcement, a neighbour, a stranger — is not a new fear. These things have been going on, in one form or another, for centuries.

The Cost of Knowing does present a fresh take, however, crossing genres to weave together a coming of age story with prescient social issues, blending the fantastical element of future-sight with a commentary on racism and power in the U.S. today. Morris’s writing is crisp and clear, her characters and storyline undeniably memorable. Although it is tagged as a young adult novel, readers of all ages will surely find themselves compelled by the story of Alex and Isaiah.

After whatever that last year was, we’re certainly hoping that 2021 will be a significant improvement! Just like every single industry, the publishing industry faced its own challenges with many 2020 releases delayed by months or even years in some cases and it caused much concern for authors with either recent or upcoming releases.

But with every year, there’s also the improvement when it comes to diversity and whilst it still unfortunately takes devastating events to invoke some kind of change or even discussion, there’s great change heading our way with 2021 releases (and even 2022 and 2023 based on book announcements made thus far).

The year promises for more #ownvoices authors to be heard with stories of fierce Black characters taking the lead role (and also killing it on their covers), queer characters and their journeys offering hope, characters embracing their bodies and their culture, and so much more. Then there’s the continuing shift in perception on genres, including romance and YA, with some incredibly great stories and offering a new take on the genres altogether.

To be honest, it’s quite exciting and refreshing, and we at The Nerd Daily can’t wait to see what comes next and cover 2021 releases!

If you love gaming and teenage girls who stand up for their rights, you will adore Slay. It was important and moving, I just couldn’t put it down! The author was inspired to write it after watching Black Panther, so I thought it was smart to pick it up just after I watched the movie and I was not disappointed.

The novel follows Keira, who secretly developed Slay, an online gaming community where black people duel from all over the world. But when someone is shot because of the game, it’s all over the news…and Kiera doesn’t know what to do.

The plot was so engaging, entertaining, and impossible to put down – it will have you up at 2am reading. It was so immersive and interesting and it was definitely character-driven, but was exciting none the less!

“If black gamers want their own space online away from the eyes of the majority, let them have it. Y’all have Mummy and Legacy of Planets. Do you need to have everything?”

The characters are so lovable, especially Kiera and her younger sister, Steph. They felt like such real people with their struggles and insecurities. Kiera’s voice felt real and easy to relate to, her thoughts and opinions are great to read and the dynamic between the two sisters was absolutely beautiful to watch their relationship grow. The side characters, especially Claire aka Cicada, were awesome. It was awesome to see their lives and views occasionally dotted throughout the book, and from Kiera’s perspective too.

Slay, the game, was so interesting! It was fun to see quite a few scenes inside the game and how the rules worked, whether you game or not. I think a lot of gaming based books and even gaming, in general, are often very male-dominated so the feminist aspects of this book are awesome.

Slay was such an amazing and important book that I’d definitely recommend everyone picks up. It discusses race, identity, relationships, and more in such an important way at the same time as being impossibly fun to read. What a gem of a book!
