Booklovers are usually one of two types; type one remember exactly what or who, when and how they were introduced to books and the second type have no idea why or how they started reading. Either way, both types rarely recall their lives before books; the phase before it (if it even exists) is likely referred to as the Dark Phase and every booklover has scrubbed it clean from their memory.

The booklover never truly lives too far from, or completely outside of, their book world. Their favourite book world is something that grows around their hearts and into their minds and is constantly nurtured. The book and its world is, of sorts, both their addiction and their comfort zone. Their thoughts often whirl and centre around a book (god forbid the dreaded cliff-hanger) and all the possible theories and worries about the story and its protagonists. This often leads to a large part of a booklover’s life remains unseen and thus they will forever be wholly mysterious and always wondered about.

Booklovers also have a knack to identify this subtle predisposition in another to get book-addicted and when they find this person, said person’s life is forever changed. Now, the question is why. Why would a booklover seek out another when everything they love is locked within the pages of a book? It’s simple; it’s because there are many times while reading, when a book has to be set aside for a minute so tissues can be blown into and emotion-filled messages can be sent to best friends or fellow booklovers before continuing.

Booklovers are both emotional and at the same time resilient, they’ve been through all kinds of experiences outside of their own; they’ve read about parents speaking about difficult things to their children, families making sacrifices for one another, protagonists facing humiliating difficulties and finding themselves despite it, and they’ve seen laughter and joy despite harrowing sorrow. They’ve seen themselves in typically at least one character in each book and they’ve learnt from so many lessons that perhaps one day will make itself known at the right moment.

Their lives aren’t truly counted by their birthdays as much as they’re measured by how long they have to wait for their next anticipated book’s release. Those who blog and read these books just a little earlier and share their joy, excitement, and thoughts on their platforms for others to read, gush about them, break them down, and discuss the million possibilities as that long awaited date finally rolls by. On the arrival of that date, eyes are wide open at 12AM, saved money spent, and all-nighters pulled as this book is devoured in one day (those with self-restraint last three days perhaps) and then the wait begins again or teary goodbyes and a series re-read commences.

No matter what kind of book one loves, their lives are shaped by the pages and pages of letters and the accumulated days of finding, reading, waiting, anticipating, crying, laughing, sharing, and growing. The worlds of us booklovers are deeper than we reveal, larger than it seems, infinitely welcoming of the new, forever reverent of the old, and always grateful for it all. At the same time, it only exists within us—just as perhaps it does for every other person who has a world of their own—ours just has some dragons in it.

Booklovers are beautiful people, warm and eccentric, strange and wonderful; but if you’re interested in puzzles, then you can see the pieces come together when you happen to glimpse this world.

1. BOOK RELATED JEWELLERY

One gift I fell in LOVE with was a gift my boyfriend got me for our 2 year anniversary, a bracelet with a Harry Potter sorting hat. And the Harry Potter fans rejoice! This bracelet is absolutely stunning and I wear it everyday to not only remind me of the magic world we dream of but also because well, what girl doesn’t love thoughtful gifts! I love the jewellery by @ohpandaeyes as everything is handmade with love and she has the cutest necklaces and earrings.

2. LIGHT READER

Have you ever sat in your room or outside as the sun starts to set, hello I was trying to read! The solution to your problem are book lights! These lights which clip on your pages are simply a lifesaver when it comes to those warm summer nights where you can just relax outside and read without straining your eyes and can also give you a better reading experience.

3. SUMMER TANK TOPS

What’s to say that your summer vibes need to be full of bikinis and shorts when you can get your own book-related tank tops and t-shirts. I’ve come to love my Beauty and the Beast and Harry Potter inspired summer lovin’ shirts as they are not only fashionable, but nothing feels better than representing your favourite fandoms!

Carly Coombe, who goes by @beautynherbooks on Instagram, has been running her bookstagram account for four years and has been buying book related gifts ever since.

“My favourite book related gift is actually one I bought for myself when I first started bookstagram,” says Coombe. “I bought a long sleeve shirt with a quote from Cassandra Clare stating ‘it was books that made me feel that perhaps I wasn’t completely alone.’ For summer, I love shops that capture the essence of summer that is bright colours, tropical scents and anything that screams I AM ON VACATION WHILE READING.”

4. CANDLES

Now, let’s talk about those sweet smells that we are in dying need of during those long summer nights as if the natural smell of the open pages isn’t enough. So many beautiful smells, from amber and sage to lavender and tropical waves. Candles are never a bad choice and I promise you, the smells will make not only your reading experience much more memorable but you will bask in the smells of your favourite books along the way.

5. HAMMOCK

Speaking of outside, ever think of hanging a hammock? Comfort and relaxation is what my mind dives into when I think of reading and what better way to embrace both while reading? That’s right, a hammock! All you need is two trees and well, a hammock! Trust me, they aren’t as expensive as you think and with an added pillow will make your reading experience one to remember.

Antique Book Mug from Society6, I Read Past My Bedtime Pillow from Society6, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Tapestry from Society6, Go To The Library Tote Bag from Society6, Rhinestone Bookmark from Book Art Bookmarks on Etsy

6. TUMBLERS + MUGS

Ever think of a tumbler for your iced coffee or sweet tea, there are many bookish shops that produce these beauties such as @enchanted_fandoms_ and @booksandballads on Instagram. For the lovers of ACOTAR, wizards and clever book puns, tumblers and mugs are perfect for every one of your cold drink desires this summer.

7. PILLOWS

Katelin, who goes by @pretty_little_library on Instagram says her favourite book related gifts would be pillows with either characters or bookish quotes on them. “In the summer, I’m drawn to bright colours on either the design or the merchandise,” says Katelin. “If they’re fun or bright, I’m there!”

8. TAPESTRIES

In the light of summer, tapestries are a great way to shield yourself from the gloomy books that may get you down in the dumps of a 2 star books or even if you’re in a reading slump. With quotes from your favourite books, bright coloured designs and the biggest wall towel you can think of, tapestries are the perfect way to hang loose and enjoy a backdrop to your already comfortable reading experience.

9. TOTE BAGS

Now how are you supposed to carry around all these book goodies? With a tote bag of course! Many shops carry tote bags with fun sayings and plenty of room to carry a few books and of course your favourite tumbler with that cute Harry Potter spell has to be filled with your green tea right? Many subscription boxes actually incorporate a small tote bag now because well, with all those bookish goodies, how else will you carry around everything?

10. BOOKMARKS

Who doesn’t love a great bookmark to keep track of their reading while they are out enjoying the summer sun? I personally love the unique bookmarks by @bookartbookmarks and @littlebookbar.
