This announcement means Supernatural has been picked up for its 14th season and it will continue its streak of the longest-running series in both The CW and previously The WB’s history. That being said, with so many renewals, cuts will have to be made eventually. While we love Supernatural, could this be the final season or will they wrap on Season 15? We will find out this time next year!

Greg Berlanti’s five superhero dramas have been renewed—the network will create a seventh season of Arrow, a fifth season of The Flash, a fourth season for both Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and a second season for their new drama Black Lightning, which also airs weekly on Netflix for international fans.

The popular Riverdale series will be returning for a third season (no surprise there with how fast it grew in popularity on Netflix with international fans), plus another new CW series Dynasty will be back for more drama, hair pulling and glorious outfits. Jane The Virgin is back for season 5, but could we be nearing the end of the series? I personally think this could be a final season as it just doesn’t feel the same anymore after their 5 year jump.

Rounding up the renewals is Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with a fourth season. However, after the announcement, co-creator and star Rachel Bloom tweeted that the show had been picked up for a “final” season—which wasn’t stated in The CW’s announcement. Bloom and co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna have previously spoken about the series only having a four-season plan, so perhaps this is one that will face the chopping blocks to make way for some new content?

We will find out about renewals for Life Sentence, iZombie, The 100, and Valor in May, but if you ask me, can The 100 really be getting another season? As for iZombie, I love the series, but I don’t think it has ever received the popularity it has deserved. Then for Life Sentence and Valor, these seemed like series that would get cut after one season when they were announced…but I could be wrong!

As we said, The CW does need to make way for new television series and they did recently announce that they would expand their primetime viewing to six nights (Sunday to Friday) come October this year when all the series start back up again… Despite this great change, we definitely are in need of some fresh content. Perhaps some superheroes may find themselves wanting to hang up their spandex soon?

With four DC superhero shows already under their belt, it’s surprising that The CW can fit another one in. However, this series is a little different to their others as the lead character was previously a hero, but he hung up his suit after he started his family.

The series follows Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) who was gifted with superhuman powers to harness and control electricity nine years ago. He used his powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. But after too many nights with his life and his family on the line, he left his superhero days behind.

Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community. Joining him will be his eldest daughter Anissa (Nafessa Williams), who will suit up as Thunder.

Black Lightning definitely sounds like an interesting show, however, it won’t be part of The CW’s Arrowverse—at least for now. At the Television Critics Association winter press tour, co-executive producers Salim and Mara Brock Akil as the Arrowverse doesn’t fit with their vision for the series. “I say this with all due respect, but they’re not really relevant to the show that we’re doing,” said Salim Akil.

Why else should you be excited about the series? Well it’s the first DCTV series to feature a black lead and it features a romance between two women of colour. Plus the series will also cover more hard-hitting topics that other series don’t particularly address such as race, justice, oppression and gun violence.

Not only are the above all valid reasons to get excited about the show, but it’s not an origin story so hopefully it will feel fresh and new.

The series stars Cress Williams (Hart of Dixie), China Anne McClain (Descendants 2), Nafessa Williams (Code Black), and Christine Adams (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D).

Black Lightning is set to premiere today at 9/8c on The CW.

The first look trailers include Black Lightning, which will be the network’s fifth superhero series. The CW president Mark Pedowitz spoke about each series and for Black Lightning, he noted that the series will exist outside of “the Arrowverse”. The topic of genre over-saturation was also brought up and he said, “we believe we have the best superhero programming around everywhere.”

As The CW continues to maintain a balance between their superhero and supernatural-related shows, the network is bringing Dynasty, Life Sentence and Valor into the fold. Dynasty is a reboot of the 1980’s soap drama and comes from the executive producers of Gossip Girl and The O.C, so you can bet it is going to be filled with drama and secrets.

Next up is Life Sentence which stars Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale as the female lead diagnosed with terminal cancer. She then finds out she’s not dying after all and now has to cop with the rash of life choices she made when she thought her life would soon be over.

Then there’s Valor, which seems like a strange choice for the network and many have already commented on the series saying it won’t last long. With several military dramas picked up over the past few weeks by various networks, Pedowitz claimed he has been trying for the past six years since he arrived at the network to launch a military drama. The CW already has two previous failed attempts under their belt, and Valor is “the best version of what we could do”, which doesn’t instil much faith.

VALOR
An elite unit of U.S. Army helicopter pilots called the Shadow Raiders are sent on a top secret mission that goes terribly awry. Nora and Gallo grow closer, and soon find themselves torn between duty, honor and desire.
