Destination Unknown transports readers to the year 1987 in New York City at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Micah, a teen who knows he’s gay but very much closeted, is at a dance club pretending to be an extrovert to please his friends. When Micah meets CJ, an out and proud guy whose fearlessness and exuberance shine brightly, Micah can’t help but be attracted to and scared for the boy who travels so proudly through life. As their lives become more and more entangled in the AIDS epidemic that’s decimating their community, Micah and CJ’s budding friendship and romance will be tested time and again—but it will also serve as a lifeline in a time of utter uncertainty. With a bond that will determine the course of their futures, can these two find their way when the final destination is unknown?

To say that Destination Unknown completely caught me by surprise would be a crass understatement. I don’t know what I was expecting from this novel, but goddamn, did it deliver! Destination Unknown had me hooked from its very first sentence and didn’t even let me go after finishing it. I don’t want to talk about the plot too much because I feel like the best thing you can do is read this book without knowing where it’s headed, so let me gush about everything else instead.

What drew me into Destination Unknown was the vivid characters Konigsberg creates. Much of what drives this story is the crass juxtaposition between Micah and CJ. On the one hand, we have Micah who is closeted for a multitude of reasons that could all be condensed to stigma—Micah fears AIDS, fears the reactions from his parents, fears being part of a community that has received nothing but backlash from everyone else. Then we have CJ, who is as out as you can be—he’s not afraid to be himself, act and dress the way he likes no matter what others say and he’s also not one to be shamed for his sex-positive mindset. To watch these two boys who grew up in the same world and yet didn’t fall in love with each other is spellbinding. Every interaction, every prejudice, every point of contention between them was impossible to look away from—my eyes were glued to the pages. In part, I think, this was because I related to both characters and understood where they were coming from— Micah has valid reasons for being scared and holding back and CJ has even more for spending the time he has on this earth being exactly who he wants to be, no matter what others try to tell him. Yet their connection is so genuine that you can’t help but feel angry, sad, happy, ecstatic and terrified for both of them throughout the novel.

The way Konigsberg reflects on the AIDS crisis in this novel is also incredibly powerful. Granted, I can’t speak for its representation since I—well, I wasn’t around back then—but the way Konigsberg manages to transport you to that time period and describe the AIDS crisis in both an educational and emotional way is incredible. I’ve read quite a few novels that thematise this time period but never have I felt so…connected to the lingering fear and, in turn, the overarching theme of love being love than while reading Destination Unknown. This book somehow manages to show both what people must have gone through back then—especially queer men—while also showing the power of love, community and acceptance and how, yes, we need a cure, but we also need to drop prejudice surrounding this illness. This is very much a story that emphasizes the importance of having a good support system, of educating yourself on topics such as safe sex and HIV and most of all, not forgetting that kindness and contact shouldn’t be taken away the second someone gets sick.

Honestly, I can’t recommend this book enough—there’s really no way to put into words how much I not only learned but gained emotionally from Destination Unknown thanks to its emphasis on community and support but I wish this was a novel that kids had to read in school, if only to show them the inherent and indestructible power of kindness.

A poignant story about what it was like to come of age during the AIDS epidemic in 1980s New York City, Destination Unknown is at times funny, ecstatic, gut-wrenching, devastating, life-affirming and most of all, a timely reminder that while love might not cure all ills, it certainly is the best thing we humans do.

Destination Unknown is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of September 6th 2022.

Synopsis | Goodreads

From Stonewall Award winner Bill Konigsberg, a remarkable, funny, sexy, heartbreaking story of two teen boys finding each other in New York City at the height of the AIDS epidemic.

The first thing I noticed about C.J. Gorman was his plexiglass bra.

So begins Destination Unknown — it’s 1987 in New York City, and Micah is at a dance club, trying to pretend he’s more out and outgoing than he really is. C.J. isn’t just out — he’s complete out there, and Micah can’t help but be both attracted to and afraid of someone who travels so loudly and proudly through the night.

A connection occurs. Is it friendship? Romance? Is C.J. the one with all the answers… or does Micah bring more to the relationship that it first seems? As their lives become more and more entangled in the AIDS epidemic that’s laying waste to their community, and the AIDS activism that will ultimately bring a strong voice to their demands, whatever Micah and C.J. have between them will be tested, strained, pushed, and pulled — but it will also be a lifeline in a time of death, a bond that will determine the course of their futures.

In Destination Unknown, Bill Konigsberg returns to a time he knew well as a teenager to tell a story of identity, connection, community, and survival.

Released on September 1st, The Bridge is Bill Konigsberg’s sixth novel. As a result of this work, Bill says on his “about” page that “…30 percent of the hair [he] had at the start of writing The Bridge is now gone, never to return.”

Being such an influence on his scalp health, we had no other option but to chat with him about the novel, to unravel every little detail about such an astounding piece of literature!

We ask about his influences, his writing process, and, of course, the best ways to approach a difficult topic, such as suicide is. He says he “hopes the book winds up being worth the baldness” and we are more than sure it definitely is.

Congratulations on your new novel, Bill. Could you start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

Thank you, and sure! I guess I’d say I’m a writer who cares deeply about being authentic. That when I started writing books, it was exceedingly important to me to write books that told the truth about being gay, and that every time I start a book, the question is always, “Who am I, and what is it that I have to say?” The Bridge is a departure in that instead of focusing on LGBTQIA+ issues, I set out to write a book that spoke the truth about chronic depression, of which I suffer, and suicidal ideation, which has be a struggle multiple times in my life. It’s funny, because I seem to have this idea that I’m supposed to express the deepest truths about myself in my novels, and I’m not sure that’s something that other human beings find to be an important or compelling goal.

If you could describe The Bridge with just three adjectives, which ones would they be?

Real. Gut-wrenching. Hopeful.

Who are your main influences when writing? And were you inspired by any other literary work or piece of media when writing The Bridge?

My biggest writing influences are Toni Morrison, Armistead Maupin, and David B. Feinberg. Morrison because she is/was a powerful truth teller who can make me shiver with a sentence. Maupin because of the heart he puts into his books. And Feinberg, a writer who died during the early days of the AIDS epidemic, because he was able to see the savagely funny in the tragic, and that he was able to make me laugh and cry simultaneously without being the least bit maudlin.

I was very aware of 13 Reasons Why, the book and TV show, while writing this book. I liked that book and show, but I didn’t think they were good conversation starters about suicide. I don’t think the author meant for them to be. I really wanted to write something that could be a book of record on the subject, something that could be an important part of a national or even international discussion about mental health and suicide.

In The Bridge, Aaron and Tillie don’t make a life-changing decision; they make four. Why did you decide to give your story four different outcomes? And how did you plan the novel out?

I felt that covering all the possible outcomes up on that bridge was the only way to expose the lie that my brain tells me when I’m depressed, one that I understand many other people hear from their brains, too: that it wouldn’t matter if I was no longer here. It’s a very dangerous lie, and what I wanted to show was what happens when each character gives in to that lie, and what might happen when they don’t. I wanted to show not just what happens to the people closest to them, but also people they don’t even know and who don’t know them, which is why I wrote the part about when they both decide to jump.

Loneliness, family ties, shattered expectations, forgiveness, self-acceptance, and the steep path towards recovery are some of the main topics that follow Aaron and Tillie’s story and revolve around the broader topic of suicide and depression. If you could have paid more attention to any of those recurrent topics, which one would it be and why?

Great question! If I could turn back time, I think perhaps I would have focused more on self-acceptance because it’s so important. As a nearly fifty-year-old person, I am sometimes amazed at how little the exterior stuff matters if and when I don’t love or accept myself. That has to be where it starts, and while I did focus there, I think even more focus might be useful.

Of course, suicide, suicidal thoughts, and depression are delicate topics to write about, especially when you have suffered from them yourself. What would be your advice for someone who wants to write about these topics and raise awareness about them?

My advice would be to take care of yourself! To have a plan for getting help, because it’s pretty hard to write about these issues while staying above them. I had to go pretty deep in while writing this book, and it was sometimes challenging, at the end of a writing day, to pull myself out. For that reason, I had plans in place, people who I knew I could talk to if necessary. Beyond that, I’d just say it’s important to sit in the feelings. It can be hard to commit to feeling those feelings, but that’s what writers do. We sit in the chair and feel what our characters feel, even when it’s unpleasant.

Suicide and mental illnesses tend to be either heavily romanticised in media or approached in such a way that leave people suffering from them feeling guilty. Where you worried about unconsciously leaning into these two approaches? How did you work around them?

I really started leaning heavily away from those, so I guess I’d say it was never far from my mind. I wanted this to be a book that pulled no punches, that was as real as I could be about mental illness and suicide, and there is simply nothing sexy or romantic about either. I guess because I was feeling so avoidant of them, I didn’t really notice working around them? Not sure if that makes sense, but it never came up.

On a hopeful note, where do you see Aaron and Tillie in 20 years?

Hmm… Tillie will be working with kids, especially kids who struggle with being bullied online or kids who struggle to speak up for themselves. No doubt. She will be a very powerful woman. Aaron will probably be a bit like me: someone who still struggles with wanting people to love and admire him. As such, his life will be up and down. He will have battled depression and prevailed many times, and he will lead with his heart. But because he has not mastered self-acceptance, he will still have dark times. Wow. Heavy answer, no?

And on a less serious note, if Aaron and Tillie could each recommend a book, which ones would they be?

The Bridge. Kidding! Aaron would recommend the new book K-pop Confidential by Stephan Lee, because it touches on his desire to be a famous musical idol. Tillie would recommend Faith: Taking Flight by Julie Murphy, which is about a kick-ass, plus-sized superhero.

Finally, what are your plans for the future? Are you working on any other novel at the moment?

I’m currently working on my next novel, Destination Unknown, which is about two boys who meet in 1987 in New York City, with the AIDS epidemic as the backdrop. That’s when and where I grew up, so I’m finally trying to write the story of what that was like.

“Tillie stares up at the tree and thinks of branches. The interconnectedness of them all, and the base, the tree, as their source. How one decision, one branch, may seem disconnected from the others but they’re all banded together. And one seemingly simple decision leads to another, and on […]”

When a person decides to end their life, there are only two possibilities: to go through with it or not. But that is not the case for the protagonists of The Bridge, Aaron and Tillie: they can both jump from the George Washington bridge, one of them can decide to jump while the other doesn’t, or both can decide to not jump…

Published on September 1st, The Bridge is Bill Konigsberg’s latest novel. His new work revolves around how suicide affects every aspect of not only one’s existence, but also that of others. Talking about suicide usually involves people wondering what could have been done different and how would a person’s death affect the people around them. Bill Konigsberg does exactly that, but taking it a step further. He offers the reader all the possible outcomes of Aaron’s and Tillie’s decision to jump (or not) by making use of alternative timelines. But fear not, despite the apparent repetitiveness of the premise, never does the novel read as monotonous. On the contrary, it becomes increasingly gripping as one version of reality closes and the next one starts.

Divided into four main sections and making use of an omniscient narrator, The Bridge explores every single unanswered possibility when facing such a desperate turning point in someone’s life. The Bridge has a raw, hard start, as the novel begins with the three harshest outcomes: Part A follows Aaron and Tillie’s family and acquaintances after she jumps; part B is the opposite as it is Aaron who jumps. Finally, part C shows how life goes on (with difficulty) after they both jump, showing how the what-ifs and the should-haves remain in time years after their death, to the point where even the people who were meant to meet Aaron and Tillie feel their absence. However, part D is a complete turn in the opposite direction. It is an ode to life, where neither of them jump and Aaron and Tillie find solace on each other.

With immensely significant moments of self-reflection on the part of the two main characters, the heart-wrenching grief their families have to go through, the moving interactions between Aaron and Tillie and their parents, and the incredibly unrelenting, witty, sarcastic humour of the protagonists, The Bridge is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. Despite the seriousness of the topic and the heartbreaking reality of it, Bill Konigsberg is able to create the perfect balance of light and darkness. All of these nuanced interactions, give an outstanding liveliness to the characters, to whom the reader has no option but to get irremediably attached. Also, showing how every person is interconnected and surrounded by love, even if their brain mistakenly makes them believe they are lonely, Konigsberg also pays especial attention to the importance of paternal support. Parents tend to be overlooked in YA; they are absent and careless, but Aaron and his dad’s relationship is the most beautiful portrayal of unconditional and endless love. Aaron’s dad is always there, ready to support his son and help him get through his depression. Such is also the case of Tillie’s mother, but while their bond solidifies throughout the novel as Tillie learns to trust her, Aaron and his dad’s is strong from the very beginning.

Linked to these relationships, Konigsberg focuses too in the need of speaking out and letting people around us help. Their parents’ support is key to their recovery, but so are the connections outside their families. This is especially poignant when comparing the sections that follow Aaron’s and Tillie’s recovery on their own, and the section where they both decide not to jump and become friends. When they have each other, someone who understands and is willing to stand by their side no matter what, their journey eases. At the same time, that contrast highlights how every single person counts: by saving your own life, you might also be saving others.

It is imperative to finish this review by applauding the utmost care with which Konigsberg offers support to people who might be going through depression and having suicidal thoughts. At no given point does The Bridge romanticise the two, and he is always gentle, never relying on guilt to urge people to seek for help. It offers a realistic and unadulterated view of these mental health issues, as well as of the process of getting better, which is no bed of roses. What is more, Aaron and Tillie represent two approaches to therapy. Aaron is blindly hopeful, to the point where—aided by his medication—he believes he can be cured in a day or two. While Tillie is blindly hopeless and thinks therapy is pointless. Neither Aaron nor Tillie get better immediately nor do they find their perfect form of therapy in the first try, and that is the hardest pill to swallow, but also the most comforting truth for those who might be going through recovery themselves when reading the novel.

To conclude, The Bridge has no apparent real closure, but four open endings. The real outcome of the story is left for the reader to decide. However, the clever organisation of the novel, which leaves the only completely positive outcome for last, effectively transmits a message of utter, blinding hope. The Bridge is a wake-up call, a sign not to jump, and an open letter to every single person who might have thought about committing suicide to let them know that they are not alone. Being a survivor of suicide and depression himself, Konigsberg words are a balm to the soul. The Bridge is an attempt to show the world that things do get better, that you and the people around you lose more than your life if you decide to jump, and also that even if recovery is one heck of a steep path, it is a journey worth taking.

The Bridge is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

Synopsis | Goodreads

Two teenagers, strangers to each other, have decided to jump from the same bridge at the same time. But what results is far from straightforward in this absorbing, honest lifesaver from acclaimed author Bill Konigsberg.

Aaron and Tillie don’t know each other, but they are both feeling suicidal, and arrive at the George Washington Bridge at the same time, intending to jump. Aaron is a gay misfit struggling with depression and loneliness. Tillie isn’t sure what her problem is — only that she will never be good enough.

On the bridge, there are four things that could happen:

Aaron jumps and Tillie doesn’t.

Tillie jumps and Aaron doesn’t.

They both jump.

Neither of them jumps.

Or maybe all four things happen, in this astonishing and insightful novel from Bill Konigsberg.

Housman’s melodic and memorable poems have been popular for over a century. He writes typically of lost love, of the brevity of happiness, of young soldiers doomed to die. Admirers have found his work elegant and resonant; detractors have thought much of it mannered and glib. But Housman speaks with two voices: the smooth texts conceal a dark sub-text. This tormented and secretive man wrote poems alive with indirect self-disclosure
