If there’s one thing that is certain in life, it’s that Disney movies will always be a hit and as an adult, and like many others out there, I still love Disney. We all have our favourite films and characters, but how do they fare against one another?

Let’s start with the sidekicks, as they are the ones who are often forgotten. We’ve decided to tackle the near-impossible task of ranking Disney sidekicks into a top 10! While many great candidates, from Thumper to Baloo and Gus Gus, didn’t make it into our list, would someone else be on yours?

10. Flounder (The Little Mermaid)

PROS: An adorable little fish and his petite size is a bonus when it comes to escaping from sharks!
CONS: Unfortunately he helps or lets Ariel do lots of questionable things. There’s a line between being a supportive friend and letting your friend pine over a human and give up her voice for him. Yes?

9. Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King)

PROS: This sidekick duo adds much-needed humour to this emotional story and with the best musical numbers, they clearly were successful since they got their own sequel.
CONS: Prey befriending a common predator? Except we do love those unlikely animal friendship videos…

8. Louis (Princess and the Frog)

PROS: Hilariously incompetent, endearing and who doesn’t love a shy, jazz-playing swamp crocodile?
CONS: Just a little lazy and lacks self-confidence, but he does make a great underdog character.

7. Maximus and Pascal (Tangled)

PROS: A horse and a chameleon makes another unlikely animal pairing. They’re both smarter and more resourceful than the humans are most of the time, so they owe them a lot.
CONS: Neither can speak which leads to a language barrier that not everyone can cross as easily as Rapunzel.

6. Genie (Aladdin)

PROS: The amazing voice of Robin Williams brings this character to the next level. He’s also responsible for most of the humour in the movie and probably one of the more popular Disney characters of all time.
CONS: Aladdin is an idiot and doesn’t listen to him ever. He also has no choice but to be a major enabler.

5. Lumiere (Beauty and the Beast)

PROS: This movie has a ton of sidekicks, but Lumiere beats them all. With a killer accent, the master of sick burns (ha, get it?), and he gets the best musical number of the movie!
CONS: Only gets to be a human for like 2 minutes and is a non-human servant for a jerky beast.

4. Raymond (Princess and the Frog)

PROS: Somehow a freaking firefly steals the show, and he is the sweetest, most lovable sidekick ever. Well, he is in love with a star for heaven’s sake. My nomination for most underrated character.
CONS: [SPOILER] Unfortunately faces the  most tragic death in a Disney movie.

3. Mushu (Mulan)

PROS: Eddie Murphy. Isn’t that enough? Also, he’s a tiny, sassy ass dragon.
CONS: Major inferiority complex.

2. Olaf (Frozen)

PROS: Best part of the movie and received a ton of hype. He’s also the king of one-liners without even knowing it and he is a snowman that wants to go to the beach…
CONS: Doesn’t have a solo movie yet. Need it ASAP.

1. Dory (Finding Nemo)

PROS: The greatest Disney character of all time! Dory has got the proof with her own solo movie and she’s also constantly quoted by real life humans.
CONS: Zero.

While Beauty and the Beast is the most anticipate film of 2017 for many, I wasn’t so sure if I wanted to see it. When it was first announcement caused excitement, both the teaser and the trailer didn’t seem impressive. Nor did I believe Emma Watson was the right choice for Belle, especially in comparison to the casting choice for the live-action remake of Cinderella. This may seem trivial, but the dress as well! It may be just a dress, but being a Disney film, it’s always an important element of the film!

But oh boy, how very wrong I was.

Emma Watson’s performance in the role of Belle was commendable. Albeit her facial expressions may have been too much at times and many facing the issue of separating Hermione Granger from Emma Watson, there was little to disapprove of. From the way she has made Belle move and talk, you can truly see how Belle is different from the rest of the villagers.

Now let’s talk about the Beast. There seems to be not much to say about him, especially since he’s not that different from the original Beast. At first he was violent and scary until he showed his sweet side. The CGI effect and Dan Steven’s acting really added another dimension to his character. As for Gaston, Luke Evans did an excellent job in playing the suave and handsome character and even though this is strange to say, he really makes you hate the character more than the original Gaston.

The visual effects in this movie are spectacular. From the menacing and alive castle, with hints of its previous glory to the furniture such as Chip and Lumière, it truly feels magical. The team behind the film has truly taken their time in paying attention to the details and capturing the essence of a Disney film.

Beauty and the Beast follows the same story as its animated original, but the atmosphere and the acting seem to alter some of the scenes. For example I found this to be the case during the beginning of the film during the voiceover about the Beast’s origin story and the fight scene between Gaston and Beast. The diversity in this film was a step up with LeFou, Plumette and Garderobe and even though they’re side characters, it’s a start and if you pay attention, you can also see many Asian actors during scenes of the film. While many believe the slight twist in altering the film to add a homosexual scene is nothing, for some countries, such as my own, it’s been the source of a significant amount of controversy, especially when Disney refused to cut the scene.

There aren’t many areas which come across disappointing, with the only ones being quite trivial for some. Firstly, the iconic yellow dress is gorgeous, but it feels too plain in comparison to the live-action Cinderella dress. Then there’s the ballroom scene. Thankfully they didn’t use Ariana and John’s version (even though it’s a decent cover), but the scene just doesn’t feel as magical as the animated version with grand windows and the starry sky.

All in all, Beauty and the Beast is a beautiful and magical movie which stays true to its core. It’s full of nostalgia, but fresh for both viewers who have or have not seen the original film. It also seems to mark a new era for Disney, and as much as I am hesitant to say this, I look forward to seeing what Disney has in store for us next.

In the new preview, we see Belle (played by Emma Watson) sing the opening song, ‘Belle’ as she strolls through the village.

The film also stars Dan Stevens as the Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth.

Beauty and the Beast hits theatres next month.
