Morgan is being ghosted by her ex. No, really. It’s sad Zach died and became a ghost. But Morgan and Zach only ever went on the one date, and now she’s being haunted by him. Zach has no desire to spend eternity with Morgan, but he can’t recall his past and doesn’t know how to move on.

At a support group for humans and their haunters, Morgan and Zach run into Sawyer, whose fiancée-turned-ghost has started to fade. Unlike Morgan, Sawyer isn’t ready to part ways with his ghost. Although they face opposite issues, Morgan and Sawyer decide to work together to solve their problems.

As Morgan and Sawyer try to solve their paranormal conundrums together, they find something even more surprising—a tender, growing affection between them that threatens any unfinished business they’re seeking to close. The ghosts of their past might be there in spirit, but the connection between Morgan and Sawyer is as alive as anything they’ve ever felt.

I resentfully follow Morgan to one of the leather booths beneath a photograph of a classic California bungalow. Morgan leans in to read the plaque, then points to a smudge on the window. Maybe it is the spirit of some 1920s Hollywood ghost, or maybe the camera’s flash caught in warped glass. We’ll never know, and I don’t care to speculate.

When Morgan opens a laminated menu, however, my disloyal stomach groans.

Reluctantly, I inspect our options. The Great Beyond Burgers. The Blair Sandwich Project. Wings with “haunt sauce.” On Sundays they have Paranormal Flapjacktivity.

Of course.

Morgan eagerly orders the Blair Sandwich. I only muster enthusiasm for the least whimsically named menu item, fries with ghost-pepper ranch dip. The fact ghost peppers happen to be named that doesn’t mean I’m disrespecting the dead.

While we wait, Morgan picks up an EMF detector nearby. She waves the plastic unit in our vicinity.

“Zach,” she says to the empty seat next to her, “is there another ghost here?”

Obviously, no one replies. I keep wishing I could disbelieve her—it would mean I had gained nothing from the meeting Kennedy sent me to.

But everything Morgan has said is impossible to ignore. So here I find myself, in a ghost bar with a woman who is talking to someone invisible.

“He says he can’t see one,” Morgan informs her living lunch companion—me.

“Those don’t work,” I cannot help remarking, nodding to the EMF detector.

Morgan smiles. “You’re such a skeptic for someone who lives with a ghost,” she comments playfully.

“You don’t need a device to measure where they are,” I reply. “You just feel them. Haunting is . . .”

I hesitate. Is what? What wouldn’t Morgan scoff at? Haunting is the visible echo of countless dreams that won’t happen. Haunting is the future you imagined, playing out in the shadow of your worst fear.

“Nothing like this,” I conclude, hoping Morgan hears the finality in my voice.

If she does, she ignores it.

She studies me without judgment. “What’s it like for you then?”

I meet her gaze. Though I find the question silly—like wondering what’s memory like? or what’s feeling like?—Morgan’s interest seems genuine. It’s sort of impressive. Openheartedness radiates from her like sunshine.

Despite the EMF detector she’s clutching, her interest relaxes me. “It’s love. Grief so real it’s palpable. Not . . . jump scares and green slime,” I say, gesturing to the menu references.

Morgan doesn’t sneer like in the support group. Instead, she looks to her left. To no one. “I hope you know that if you ever green-slime me, I will re-kill you.” She pauses. “You don’t even want to know how.” Seeming satisfied, she looks to me. “I don’t grieve Zach, though,” she replies. “I definitely didn’t love him.”

Her bag, perched on the table, starts to wobble suddenly. When it tumbles from the edge, Morgan catches it clumsily, looking relieved.

“He doesn’t like it when I’m mean to him, but I don’t like it when he cock-blocks every date I’ve been on since he appeared,” Morgan explains matter-of-factly. “Does your ghost ruin your sex life?”

I shift uncomfortably.

“No,” I say.

“You’re lucky,” Morgan informs me.

Unbeknownst to Morgan, I hear the phantom echo of my own promise to Kennedy. I’m the luckiest man in the whole world.

“Maybe Zach loves you,” I say.

Morgan laughs.

“If you could see Zach’s face right now,” she replies. “I promise you. He doesn’t. Okay, okay, dude”—she glances to her other side—“no need to rub it in! I have feelings!”

Our food is delivered. Promptly Morgan produces from her bag shining pieces of black crystal. She sets them up forming a secure perimeter surrounding her sandwich.

“Leave my food alone,” she warns. I know I’m not the person she’s speaking to.

I start in slowly on my fries. The ghost pepper sauce is decent, even if eating ranch from a B-rated restaurant may have me joining Kennedy on the other side real soon.

Morgan continues in between bites. “I went on one date with Zach three months ago, and neither of us wanted a second date. I didn’t even know he died until he popped up in my bathroom mirror while I was brushing my teeth. I have no idea why he’s haunting me. Was it similar for you?”

“Not really,” I say, hoping one- or two-word responses will communicate that I do not want to elaborate.

No such luck.

“How did you first discover you were being haunted?” Morgan presses me.

I sigh. I keep to myself mostly these days. I’ve forgotten how pushy the living can be in conversation.

“Kennedy showed up shortly after she died. I didn’t realize it was her at first. Things in my house just kept being moved around. A folded blanket. A dish I left out moved to the sink. Mail brought in,” I explain.

“Man, I wish Zach were helpful like that,” she says. She reaches for one of my fries, then clenches her hand, withdrawing in reconsideration.

“Maybe if he were, you wouldn’t be in such a hurry to get rid of him,” I reply.

Morgan considers. She grows serious, the sunlight quality of her eyes clouding.

“I still would,” she finally says. “He’s . . . not supposed to be here,” she explains. “I don’t think he wants to be here either. I mean, it’s not really a life, just hovering around me. I think it’s better he move on, or whatever.”

She clutches the edge of her plate, expecting retribution from Zach, but nothing happens. Her bag sits motionless on the table. He . . . agrees with her.

My stomach knots.

It’s different with us, I insist to myself. Kennedy and I had a life. Have a life.

“Maybe,” I concede.

Morgan studies me more closely. I feel suddenly self-conscious, like when I shared in the support group. I offer her one of my fries, hoping to defuse.

She looks pleased and hits the ghost-pepper sauce unflinchingly. Her focus on me doesn’t let up, however. “Doesn’t Kennedy keep you from living a normal life? Surely it must be hard to explain to coworkers why the office feels haunted around you,” she ventures. “Your friends must be creeped out at your place.”

“I work from home,” I say.

Morgan raises her eyebrows, unsatisfied. “And your friends?”

“Kennedy is my friend.”

Morgan’s shoulders slump. “Dude,” she pronounces. “You need to have at least one friend who isn’t dead.”

I shrug. Defiantly, I dip my fry. “Why?”

Skepticism crosses Morgan’s expression when she opens and then closes her mouth. She lifts the EMF detector up and waves the unit closer in front of me.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Making sure you’re not a ghost,” she informs me. “Can’t end up in a Sixth Sense situation here.”

I nearly laugh, surprising myself. “Well, what does the very science-backed ghost-hunting tool tell you?”

“According to this, you’re alive, but I’m not convinced,” she informs me. “You’re right. Probably doesn’t work.”

Hi, Emily and Austin! Welcome back! How has the past 18 months been since we last spoke?

It’s so wonderful to be back! Has it really been 18 months? Time really flies by! Probably because we’ve been keeping ourselves busy publishing more adult romance, YA, and venturing into some new genres too. Of course, our three year-old German Shepherd named Bronte also occupies much of our time.

Your latest novel, Heiress Takes All, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Fun, fast-paced, twisty, swoony, thrilling.

What can readers expect?

Heiress Takes All is about a vengeful ex-heiress who assembles a crew of classmates (and one former teacher) to help heist her father’s fortune at his third wedding. It has everything we love in heist stories—an eclectic crew, romance, elaborate plans, and plenty of twists. While the heist is fast-paced—the whole book is set on the day of the wedding—there is still plenty of time for humor and banter. Olivia is out for revenge, and she’s not going to let anyone stop her…especially not her ex-boyfriend who has come to the wedding in hopes of reconciling with her in the midst of her high-stakes heist.

Where did the inspiration for Heiress Takes All come from?

We’ve wanted to write something more action-oriented for a long time. Like all of our ideas, Heiress Takes All came from our joint brainstorming. One of us suggested a heist taking place at a wedding, and the other suggested that wedding be the main character’s father. From there a revenge plot was born! We pulled from our love of movies like Ocean’s Eleven and Knives Out as we constructed our heist from within this horrible wealthy family. Of course, we come from romance, and we love putting romance into all of our books, so we made sure to build in a very inconvenient love interest for our mastermind.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

We love to write young women who are overlooked and underestimated. Olivia is bitter and smart and uncompromising. It was a ton of fun to let ourselves give into her worst instincts while falling for a cinnamon-roll love interest. That said, there’s one member of Olivia’s crew—Kevin—who blackmails his way into the crew simply because he wants to hang out with them all. He was a blast to write—someone who is basically the epitome of the “wait, you guys are getting paid?” meme.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing Heiress Takes All?

This was our first time writing a heist! We knew it would be a challenge for us, and it was. We wanted to make sure our twists were surprising but also fit the story. We’ve always been heavy outliners, and this book was no exception. We started from a place of knowing the major reversals and twists in the story, and we outlined the shape of everything in two weeks, totally swept up in the fun. Then, though, we returned to our outline and asked ourselves, what more can we do here? We added in more complications, more complexity to our villains and heroes. We pushed ourselves to pick apart every aspect of Olivia’s plan until we were satisfied.

What’s the process like when brainstorming future works?

Generally, we each come up with the beginnings of ideas. Sometimes they are more complete, and sometimes they are just a world or a character. From there, the other one of us adds to it. We’ve found that no matter how finished we might think an idea is on our own, the other one of us will always add some deeper dimension or clever twist. Sometimes we even combine two halves of story ideas we independently had together. Once we have what we consider the one-sentence pitch for the book, we come up with who our characters are—what they want, what is standing in their way, what their romance looks like. Only when we have the broad strokes in place do we get into actually outlining the story.

What’s next for you both?

Next we actually have an adult cozy romantasy that we wrote with Bridget Morrissey under the pen name E.B. Asher. It’s called This Will Be Fun and it’s out September 10. It’s about a group of friends who saved their magical realm together but haven’t spoken since, until they’re forced to reunite on the road to the queen’s wedding.

Lastly, are there any books you’ve enjoyed picking up this year or releases you can’t wait to get your hands on?

We’re very much looking forward to Heist Royale, the sequel to Thieves’ Gambit. We are such fans Kayvion Lewis’ thrilling and epic series, and we can’t wait to see what is next for Ross and Devroe after that ending!!

This one comes out on April 9, and its perfect mix of intrigues and heartrending emotion is unmissable.

4. Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban

A recognizable title sets the tone for debut author Emma Alban’s wonderful period romance, a sapphic Bridgerton meets The Parent Trap about two debutantes who conspire to set up their widowed parents and end up falling for each other, leading them to contend with the quandaries and priorities of the Marriage Market. Like our favorite songs, Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend is a little classic and a little modern, a lot romantic and a whole lot of fun. Following a motif, its sequel You’re The Problem, It’s You comes out in August.

5. Kiss the Girl by Zoraida Córdova

Córdova’s contemporary update of the Little Mermaid, featuring singer Ariel Del Mar, eager to escape her youthful career and the aegis of her father, the head of Atlantica Records. When Ariel encounters rock singer Eric Reyes, she wants to be part of his world, even if it means leaving behind the life she knew. The music industry combines perfectly with the Disney classic in a wonderfully clever update that will have readers humming some of their oldest favorite songs.

6. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Ask anyone—the ultimate literary musical romantic drama, Daisy Jones is exactly as excellent as you’ve heard. The story of larger-than-life singer Daisy Jones and conflicted frontman Billy Dunne in the 1970s classic rock scene, Reid’s immortal work intertwines the stuff of real Rolling Stone legends—borrowing from Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen and more in one immaculately realistic rendering—with a heart-shaking emotional core.

7. The Daydreams by Laura Hankin

Lyrical and unputdownable, it’s a compelling and sharply entertaining look into the perils of fame.

Hi, Emily and Austin! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourselves?

Hi Nerd Daily readers! We’re longtime readers, so we’re so excited to be doing this interview! We’re married co-writers who write romance together, both YA and adult. We’ve been dating since we were seniors in high school, and after four years of long-distance in college we moved back to Los Angeles and decided to start writing together. We got married in 2019.

When did you first discover your love for writing?

We have different answers for this one. Austin has loved writing since as long as he can remember, whereas Emily only tried writing out once she got to college. We had no idea that we would one day write novels together. That said, stories have always been important to us, and even when we were just starting to date in high school, it was books and movies that we talked about nonstop. It’s always been the pillar of our connection in one way or another.

Do I Know You? is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Roleplay, second-chance, marriage, vacation, angst

What can readers expect?

Do I Know You? is our take on the marriage-in-trouble trope. It’s a romance that takes place after the “I do’s” because we believe romance should never end! While Graham and Eliza are feeling disconnected from each other, they never stop loving each other and wanting to make things work. It’s through roleplaying as strangers that they’re able to reveal new sides of themselves and get to know each other all over again. It was our goal to portray the angst and joy and fun that can still exist in a marriage. Also, you can expect hot tub scenes.

Where did the inspiration for Do I Know You? come from?

We came up with this book in the pandemic, when we were stuck inside in our house with only each other for company and it was easy to feel like every day with your partner is the same. For us, we escape that feeling by writing books together—in the hours we’re writing we put ourselves in our characters’ heads and re-experience falling in love all over again. It’s sort of like roleplaying, which is where our inspiration took off.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

It was a lot of fun to write the inciting scene where Graham and Eliza are accidentally introduced by a well-meaning guest who thinks they’re strangers. It’s an inversion of the classic meet-cute scene at a bar. While it functions just like those scenes, there’s an extra layer of subtext and tension as they challenge each other to keep up the game.

Do I Know You? is your seventh co-written novel with another to be published this year! Can you tell us about what your collaboration process is like?

We write all our books together. While Emily does more of the outlining and Austin more of the editing, when it comes to drafting, our process looks like us in our office, talking out sentences until we agree on every singe word and type it into the book. It takes…a lot of time, and it is not a conflict-free process, but it allows us to write the best books we can. And as an added bonus, work is also time spent together.

What’s next for you both?

Next up we have a YA romcom coming out on April 4 called Never Vacation with Your Ex. It’s about a couple who has very recently broken up, but because their parents are best friends, they are forced to go on a joint family vacation together.

In the adult space, our next romance is releasing next year and is called The Breakup Tour. It’s our Taylor-Swift-inspired romance featuring a pop star who has recorded an album about all of her exes only to find herself going on tour with the one she never stopped thinking about.

Lastly, are there any 2023 book releases our readers should look out for?

We’re so excited for Bridget Morrissey’s That Summer Feeling, as well as Faith McClaren and Victoria Fulton’s Ellie is Cool Now.
