After several delays due to the pandemic, Atypical’s long-awaited fourth and final season finally premiered in July and had fans say one final goodbye to the show. Atypical tells the story of the Gardner family whose oldest son, Sam Gardner is autistic. As previous seasons have focused on Sam navigating his relationships, school, and his journey to independence, this final season has continued to do so, increasingly so as Sam realises and achieves his big dream, which is visiting Antarctica.

It’s no secret that Sam loves Antarctica and penguins. Throughout the show’s run, Sam narrates the show and has consistently compared the relationships between himself, his family members, and his friends to the relationships between penguins, has drawn penguins for fun and for school, has a room that is decorated from top to bottom in penguin merchandise and has adopted a penguin named Stumpy at the local aquarium. So, when Sam is prompted to think about what his big dream is, it’s no surprise that he reveals his dream of going to Antarctica and decides to signs up for an aboard program at his college. However, unluckily for him, halfway through the season, he finds out that the program has been cancelled due to a lack of interest and thus, needs to find another way of getting to Antarctica.

Meanwhile, Sam’s younger sister, Casey Gardner is now trying to figure out her sexuality as she has recently gotten into a relationship with her classmate and friend, Izzy while also trying her best to balance her academic and athletic responsibilities. As she is faced by academic and athletic pressure, Casey shows signs of anxiety as she bites her fingernails so much that they start to bleed and when a scout from UCLA comes to see Casey run during her race, Casey is so stressed out she walks off the field and skips out on the race. Following her anxiety attack, Casey has to figure out what she wants out of school and track while also navigating her relationship with her girlfriend, Izzy, who herself has a rocky relationship with her mother and runs away from home halfway through the season.

While their kids are figuring out their lives, Doug and Elsa are relearning how to navigate their relationship while also dealing with their individual problems. As the season unfolds, Doug’s lifelong coworker and best friend, Chuck retires and then promptly dies from a heart attack in a follow-up episode. As he is reeling from the sudden death of his friend, Doug realises that life is short, that he has 54 vacation days saved up, and decides that he will join Sam on his journey to Antarctica. While Doug is on his self-discovery journey, Elsa is prompted by Izzy’s rocky relationship with her mother to reconnect with her own estranged mother but then discovers that her mother is displaying signs of dementia.

Side plots include Sam’s best friend and coworker, Zahid maturing due to a cancer scare, Sam’s girlfriend, Paige deciding what she wants to do with her future and Casey’s girlfriend, Izzy dealing with her rocky relationship with her mother and running away from home.

In its final season, Atypical is able to explore many of its storylines at length and weaves a brilliant story of independence, identity, and growth. Despite this, some arcs such as Elsa’s mother’s dementia, Izzy running away and Casey’s anxiety attacks are not explored in depth and are mostly glossed over.

Overall, although some storylines are glossed over and are not given as much attention as other storylines, Atypical‘s final season still delivers an emotional ride that focuses on the characters’ growth and identity individually and collectively.

What did you think of the final season of Atypical? Tell us in the comments below!

June is Pride Month and we are here to discuss all our favourite ships from TV shows! As we are discussing couples, here is a spoiler warning if you haven’t watched or are halfway through any of the following One Day At A Time, Greys Anatomy, Shadowhunters, Elite, Glee, The 100, Modern Family, The Bold Type, Schitts Creek and, Atypical beware!

Elena and Syd (One Day At A Time)

Elena and Syd are both awkward and are trying to figure everything out together. They treat each other with respect and are best friends. Both of them are nerdy, activists, and all around amazing people, this pairing is one we hope lasts till the end of time.

Callie and Arizona (Grey’s Anatomy)

These two have had their fair share of obstacles and they have supported each other through many of their worst times. We see these two fall in and out of love on multiple occasions, but there is no denying that these two are one of the sweetest couples on Grey’s Anatomy.

Magnus and Alec (Shadowhunters)

Magnus and Alec had everybody swooning and crying, these two defied the odds and made their relationship work even when the entire Shadowhunter world was stacked against them. Both Alec and Magnus are such kind people and always try to understand and accept each other.

Ander and Omar (Elite)

Elite is filled with drama and relationships falling apart, but these two are one that everybody is rooting for. Ander and Omar are both trying to come to terms with their sexuality and they have a lot of death surrounding them too. These two have a passionate relationship that everybody hopes will work out in the end.

Kurt and Blaine (Glee)

Kurt and Blaine gave us so many beautiful duets and such swoon worthy moments. They were so sweet and one of the most iconic couples on Glee.

Clarke and Lexa (The 100)

These two were such a surprising pair that none of us knew we needed! They came from completely different sides, but they understood each other and we really needed more for the two.

Mitch and Cam (Modern Family)

Mitch and Cam may be polar opposites, but these two are perfect for each other. They are the best parents and always manage to make us laugh. Also they gave us the iconic “The Lion King” scene so what is not to love?

Kat and Adena (The Bold Type)

These two are badass women on their own and make one powerful couple. They have had their fair share of ups and downs, but these two have a healthy relationship and communicate very well.

Patrick and David (Schitts Creek)

These two are the sweetest and most pure couple. They make each other laugh, are patient and open, and are all around adorable! They even make working together look cute!

Casey and Izzie (Atypical)

These two went from enemies, to best friends to something more. They are both still trying to figure out what their relationship means but we can’t wait to see more of these two in the next season of Atypical.

Because there are so many amazing LGBTQ+ couples, here are some honourable mentions; Emily and Maya from Pretty Little Liars, Daryl and Josh from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Corey and Mason from Teen Wolf, Ola and Lily from Sex Education, Noah and Shane from Faking It, and Santanna and Britney from Glee. Of course there are so many more couples and these are just based on what I have watched!

Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as his mother, Elsa, who is on her own journey of self-discovery. Michael Rapaport plays his father, Doug. Brigette Lundy-Paine (Margot vs Lily, The Glass Castle) plays Sam’s sister, Casey, and Amy Okuda (How to Get Away with Murder) plays a therapist, Julia. Additional cast includes Nik Dodani (Alex Strangelove) who plays Sam’s best friend, Zahid, and Jenna Boyd plays Paige, Sam’s on again, off again girlfriend.

In the second season, set in the wake of some major changes in the Gardner family’s natural environment, Sam (Keir Gilchrist) is struggling to adapt to some shifts in his high school friend group. Elsa is still trying to earn back the trust of her husband Doug after having an affair. Meanwhile, Sam’s therapist Julia is still working through last season’s surprise pregnancy while helping her patients get back on track.

Atypical was created, written and executive produced by Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother, Will & Grace). Academy Award-winning producer Seth Gordon (Baywatch, The Goldbergs) also executives produces.

The 10-episode second season will be available internationally September 7th on Netflix.
