Books that feel like hugs are a sweater weather staple, and The Teller of Small Fortunes has been added to my rotation of favorite comforting books. It’s such a warm and lovely read, perfect for when the temperature dips and snow dusts the ground overnight.

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

I credit this book for sparking my love of all things fantasy. It was an up-after-bedtime, flashlight-beneath-the-covers kind of book. My original copy is missing the back cover and chunks of pages are taped back inside where they belong. Everything about this one is cozy: The ridiculously lovable characters, the whimsical setting, the magical mishaps—but the coziest of all are my memories of falling completely in love with fantasy during my very first read.

Haunt Your Heart Out by Amber Roberts

I crammed so much comfort into this feel-good small-town romance. We’ve got sleigh rides, snowy evenings, crackling fireplaces, the silliest dog, ghost hunting, a creaky old bookstore, and found family, swirled all together like the pumpkin spice in your latte. While writing Haunt Your Heart Out, I was craving sweater weather and books that felt like hugs, so I poured those wants onto the page to create a sorta-spooky, totally cozy book that’s a bit like curling up on the couch beneath a fuzzy plaid blanket while snow falls outside.

Happy holigays, indeed!

I’m a sucker for an atmospheric read and in Make the Season Bright—as with the Bright Falls series— Ashley Herring Blake delivers on all fronts. The holiday setting with all the staples you’d expect (cookie baking and decorating, snowy outdoor activities, and snow also being an extra character that causes trouble…and magic) brought all the cosy holiday vibes and added a magical layer to this second chance romance.

I quite enjoyed the pairing of a very Hallmark-esque setting with the realistic fallouts that come from a romantic relationship that ended in tears.

Trust that I personally would hold a grudge for the rest of my life if someone left me at the altar, but somehow, the author made this second chance romance work and, more importantly, convinced me that Charlotte and Brighton should give this thing another go. Second chance romances are notoriously hard to get right because you have to show both why the characters belonged to each other in the past even if it didn’t work out as well as why they should now, after hearts were broken and years of distance, try to reconcile. Blake excels at showing the unresolved emotions between Brighton and Charlotte that work particularly well with how opposite they both are. Charlotte’s more reserved and closed-off nature paired quite well with Brighton’s more extroverted, light-hearted personality.

What makes a great romance for me is when I can see the characters grow individually and this book delivers that as well. Brighton, who is determined to make things right and Charlotte, who is struggling with her anxiety and the way it impacts her life on a daily basis, undergo a lot of necessary growth before they can truly reconnect, which makes it so easy to root for them.

What I will say though is that I occasionally felt like conversations and characterisations cut off right before they could get deep enough and truly reveal something to the reader. That was especially the case with Charlotte for me. While we do learn that she is more closed off and scared of getting hurt again, I wanted the story to dive deeper into those feelings and what inspired them even before the whole leaving someone at the altar situation. Similarly, Brighton and Charlotte getting back together felt somewhat unresolved – instead of talking everything out, they give in to their desires which was definitely a good time (the spice was spicing, if you catch my drift) but left me wanting a little bit more relationship work.

Lastly, another highlight and as is a common pleasure with books by this author, Make the Season Bright features a diverse cast of kooky secondary characters that brings the found family trope to life. I always marvel at how Blake makes every character stand out so clearly even with limited page-time, but from band members to Sloane’s relatives, everyone just added a little something to the story that made it feel so much more well-rounded.

Releasing July 9th 2024, The Next Best Fling sees two broken hearts decide that the best way to get over their first loves is with a no-strings-attached relationship in this spicy and charming debut romance.

The book community can moan and groan about love triangles all they want—I’ll be on the couch with my Kindle and a snack because I eat it up every single time. Whether it’s time to move on from an unrequited love, exes who stick around to wreak havoc when someone new enters the chat, a main character torn between two siblings, or even a love square, there’s something so captivating to me about these complicated dynamics of the heart.

Love’s a mess, and sometimes we’re not sure what we want until we navigate our way through it. I had a blast exploring the messier dynamics in The Next Best Fling, and it’s one of my favorite aspects to read in romance books.

Here are some messy romances that had my eyes glued to the page, and if quite a few of these also involve fake dating? I guess you could say I have a type.

Complicated Exes

Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date by Ashley Herring Blake

After a (failed) one night stand with an unlucky in love romance author leads Stevie’s friend group, including her ex who’s now dating within said friend group, to believe she’s finally moving on, Stevie will have to fake date the woman to save face. Luckily, Iris is in desperate need of inspiration for her next book, and what better way to beat her writers block than living out a beloved romance trope?

The Bright Falls series explores the joys and complexities of queer friendships in beautiful and fascinating ways. Stevie is put in an awkward position, but it’s made even worse when her ex’s jealousy comes out once Stevie and Iris start fake dating. I loved the way Iris helped Stevie through her anxiety, and it was so satisfying to watch Stevie break down Iris’s walls and convince her she’s worthy of love. And while the series overall is fever hot, this book is the hottest by far.

Only For The Week by Natasha Bishop

Janelle is completely over her ex. Is it a little weird that he’s now engaged to her sister? Completely, but she’s always known he was wrong for her on some level, despite all the pitying glances she now gets from her friend group. When her ex’s best friend and best man, Rome, joins everyone for the destination wedding, they can’t deny their attraction to each other. After all, he’s always had a thing for Janelle even when she was with his best friend. Their friends might think the worst of Janelle if they knew what was going on between her and Rome, but their fling will last only for the week leading up to the wedding, so it’s no problem…right?

Rome is the book boyfriend we all deserve. Renting a yacht all because Janelle’s one wish for the wedding getaway was to read in peace by the water? The definition of if he wanted to, he would. He stands firmly beside Janelle as she discovers the true reason her sister has become so cold with her recently as the wedding date creeps closer and closer.

My American Duchess by Eloisa James

Something I love about historical romances is that they’re always going to have the most delightfully unhinged plotlines. There is a point in this book where I audibly gasped, shouted “no way” and paced the length of my bedroom. Just when you think this book is going one direction, the rug gets pulled out from underneath you. Just trust me on this one, Eloisa James is a staple in hist-rom for a reason.

The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath

Edward has always held a torch for his twin brother’s wife, Julia. But when an expedition abroad goes terribly wrong, his brother’s dying wish is for Edward to take his place as the Earl of Greyling until Julia delivers her baby safely to term. As Edward is pretending to be the Earl and falling for his brother’s wife more and more every day, he knows he can’t keep up the ruse for much longer. But the deception may be too great for Julia to ever look past, no matter how conflicted her heart.

Speaking of unhinged plots? Lorraine Heath hasn’t met a line she’s not willing to cross for the sake of a really good romance. Not everyone will be able to get behind Edward’s actions, but this book was so expertly crafted that I could not put this book down until the conflict was resolved and he and Julia had their well-deserved HEA.  

The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa

What’s more humiliating than being left at the altar? Being a wedding planner and a jilted bride at the same time. So when Lina receives an opportunity to change the downward trajectory of her career, she’ll do anything for the chance to prove herself. Even if it means collaborating with Max, her ex fiancé’s brother, the man who encouraged him to leave her at the altar…

Packed with Mia Sosa’s sparkling brand of humor and hijinks, this is the perfect set up for an incredible forced-proximity, enemies-to-lovers rom-com that explores Lina’s long-held grudge as she begins to thaw and Max’s rocky sibling relationship as he reckons with the fact that he’s falling for his brother’s ex fiancé.

Unrequited Love

Say You’ll Be Mine by Naina Kumar

After Meghna’s best friend, writing partner, and object of her affection gets engaged, she knows it’s time for her to move on. After agreeing to let her parents introduce her to a potential match, she meets Karthik, who isn’t interested in forming anything real but is looking for a way to get out of his mom’s matchmaking schemes. Maybe fake dating someone else will make Meghna forget all about her crush and get Karthik’s mom off his back. That is, if they don’t accidentally fall for each other in the process.

A delightful twist on My Best Friend’s Wedding—Meghna and Karthik’s banter and sizzling chemistry won me over immediately. It was so lovely to watch Karthik convince Meghna that she deserves so much more for herself than the scraps she receives from her best friend/unrequited love.

The Romantic Agenda by Claire Kann

Joy has secretly been in love with her best friend, Malcolm, for forever, but when he announces that he’s found the love of his life, she’s crushed. Even worse, he wants Joy to go on a weekend getaway with his newfound love and a man named Fox, who has a complicated relationship with Malcolm’s girlfriend. After forming a tentative bond, Fox proposes they pretend to have a fling to get make Malcolm jealous, but surprise themselves when they realize they might actually be right for each other.

Joy knows her approach to relationships is different from others because of her asexual identity, which is partly why she clings to the idea of Malcolm because of their shared experiences and years of friendship. But it isn’t until she meets Fox that she realizes she’s been doing herself a disservice by holding herself back from other opportunities for love. The complicated dynamics between these four characters are explored with humor and self-reflection, and it was incredibly beautiful how the resolution between everyone was handled with so much care.

Sapphic fake dating, what more could you want, am I right? Blake decides to end the highly beloved Bright Falls series with a wonderful romance between two struggling artists who, for their own reasons, are closed off to love…and yet somehow manage to open each other’s hearts for the possibility of a once-in-a-lifetime-romance.

Iris and Stevie were a such a great pairing and much of that comes down to their well-developed personalities. Iris is a bisexual queen and I loved her confidence in her curvier body and her determination not to let anyone tell her to follow the stereotypical, traditional road of what everyone else in her family has chosen. She’s fun, smart, and intriguing, but there’s so much more to her and as the story unravels, we learn the reasons for her decisions and why she’s so against dating.

Something that intrigued me a lot was Iris’s family. It was interesting to see her with her parents and siblings that have such traditional values which we still often see in society where you aren’t thought of a successful before you don’t complete the house-with-white-picked-fence-and-two-point-five-kids stereotype.

Stevie, meanwhile, just deserved to be wrapped up in a blanket and cuddled all day long. The way Blake approaches anxiety in this book with Stevie was so relatable and I loved that Stevie’s existence shows people that just because you live with anxiety does not mean you can’t want to be successful on a stage or in the spotlight. Stevie’s dream is acting and living with anxiety is not mutually exclusive with that dream.

I love this about Blake’s other novels in this series as well, but Iris and Stevie really were so supportive and understanding when it came to the other person. It always felt like, even when they didn’t see eye to eye, they respected each other on such a deep level that it infused their romance with so many layers. Whether it was about mental health, struggles in their professional lives or something else, those discussions always were a highlight to read about.

Being brutally honest, I actually didn’t like any of Stevie’s friends. Sure, Ren had some charming moments, but Adri and Vanessa had my blood boiling multiple times with how insensitive and downright despicable they were. Appreciating that Stevie eventually set boundaries and told her friends what she needs from them, but every time they treated her badly in the novel, I just wanted to chuck the entire thing to the point where I was frustrated the moment they entered a scene (which, again might have been the point but took away from Stevie as a POV).

Likewise, the ending also felt a bit all over the place for me. I’m not a fan of the traditional third-act break-up, and I struggled a bit with how much time we spent talking about the other couples of the series in the final chapters, but then again it is kind of hard wrapping up the entire series and showing where they other two couples are at without drawing attention away from the couple you’ve spent the last 300+ pages getting to know and love.

All in all, Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date is a satisfying, heartfelt conclusion to an exciting sapphic romance series that offers a lovely farewell to characters and will take the sting out of saying goodbye to the series once and for all.

What a pleasure to return to Bright Falls and its one-of-a-kind inhabitants! While the queer collective—Claire, Delilah, and Iris—are a bit less prominent in this installment to give Astrid her time to shine (and her bisexual awakening that no one deserve more), lovers of the first book Delilah Green Doesn’t Care will have a blast reconnecting with their favourite supportive gang.

I’m a sucker for a good rivals-to-lovers dynamic and Jordan and Astrid truly delivered on that account. From their first meet-ugly to their opposing opinions on nearly every design decision, I loved how both of them had their reasons for their choices. While Jordan wants to keep the charm of the inn alive, Astrid is pressured to both satisfy the inn’s owner, the HGTV show hosts and somewhere along the line also please her mother’s aesthetic. Following the ladies as they morph from bitter rivals to something more is a joy to behold, especially since Jordan’s snark and Astrid’s seemingly cool demeanour clash so wonderfully that their interactions feel like a tennis match where you don’t know who to root for. That is, of course, in great parts due to the greatly fleshed-out characters.

Blake excels at creating characters that feel so real they almost jump off the pages and straight into your heart. Not without their faults, these women are dealing with so many complex emotions that you wish you could give them a hug and make the bad world disappear for a moment. Both Astrid and Jordan have their own severe hang-ups that influence their choices and leads to unexpected situations, yet they also have to stand up for themselves and face the consequences of their actions. Astrid, in particular, goes through a lot of growth in this novel. Not only with her sexuality and realising that there might be more to the fleeting thoughts she has had about women in the past, but even more in terms of her relationship with her mother—and her own fear of failure because of said relationship.

While there were hints in the first novel about Astrid’s mother’s hold over Astrid, in this book, we really get to see just how much choices can be influenced by what kind of environment we grew up in. Astrid has a lot of toxic behaviour and thought processes to unlearn and Jordan’s own past isn’t easy to overcome, either. Yet their snarky, steamy and in turns even sweet interactions balance out the heavier topics of their romantic journey. While the dreaded third-act-induced break-up was a bit too formulaic, the pacing flows seamlessly otherwise. From the heightened stakes of the inn’s renovation (which acts as a sort of Hail Mary to save the family from bankruptcy) to Astrid and Jordan’s romantic entanglement that eventually makes Astrid come to terms with the unattainable expectations she has put on herself, the pages fly by as you root for the two stubborn women to get their happily ever after.

Finally, we get a glimpse at the upcoming final instalment in the Bright Falls series—Iris’s story—that is sure to be a knockout of a novel if Iris’s badass appearances in this novel are anything to go by.

Delivering an emotionally complex yet upbeat rivals-to-lovers romance with two headstrong women at its core featuring relatable themes that are sure to make millennials feel seen like never before, Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail is a welcome addition to the queer adult romance genre!
