Article contributed by Hannah French

The most recent adaptation of Little Women was a masterpiece and took the world by storm. It was filled with feminist messages, heartwarming sister relationships, and romance to make you swoon. The cast had Saiorse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies,) and Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia). But what should you pick up to read or watch next? Well I have broken down the movie into sections with some recommendations for you all!

If you loved the feminism in Little Women a.k.a the scene where Jo talks to her mum about how women are more than just their looks or when Amy tells Laurie what it means to be a woman in the 1800s. I would recommend you watch the Netflix original series, Anne with an E.

Anne with an E is about Anne Shirley, an orphan girl who comes to live with an elderly brother and sister in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. Anne has a big imagination and an even bigger heart. This show is beautifully shot, has incredible characters, and so many feminist moments. The most feminist-centred episode would have to be Season 3, Episode 7, so if you’re just going to watch one episode, watch that one. Anne is very similar to Jo and it is also set in the past (1907), so this a perfect watch if you loved Little Women. This TV show is based on the books Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, but the TV show did something very similar to Greta Gerwig’s adaptation and has taken a more modern twist and opened a discussion about relevant issues today.

Things A Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls is also a great read if you want to read something with a feminist undertone. This book is set in the early 1900s during the suffragette movement in England. Things A Bright Girl Can Do is filled with badass women and is so insightful to a movement we often forget about.

If you loved the time period of when Little Women is set I would recommend either watching or reading Little House on the Prairie. This story takes place in Minnesota in the 1870s-90s. The costumes in the show are great (not quite as extravagant as in Little Women), it shows how people survived and how hard people had to work. This is based on the real life of Laura Ingalls-Wilder and her family settling into Walnut Grove. Laura is feisty, brave, and a little reckless. This show/book is filled with heartwarming family moments and a great insight into what it was like to live in this time period.

If you loved the romance in Little Women I would recommend watching Poldark. This show is set in Cornwall, England in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It has a strong female lead and a romance that will have you swooning, the accents are also amazing. If you’ve watched The Hobbit, Aiden Turner is the dashing love interest in this.

Family plays a very important role in Little Women and if you adored that aspect of this movie you should definitely go and check out One Day At A Time. Although this show is set in present day America, it has a great family dynamic and discusses so many important issues.

Little Women is all about the March sisters and if you loved any scene with all four sisters together you should pick up The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. This book might just be the modern Little Women and it follows four sisters on summer holiday in Massachusetts. This book is targeted at younger readers but can be read at any age.

Greta Gerwig is one talented director, if you adore this woman (who doesn’t?) you should check out her other very successful film Lady Bird. You may see some familiar faces in this film as well (Saiorse and Timothée just seem to have the best chemistry). This film is about a teen girl in her senior year of high school and how she navigates her relationship with her mum, friends and boys

In case you’ve already watched/read all of these you can always just rewatch the movie, that never hurts.

Written by Emily Clark

The third and final season (unfortunately) of Anne with an E released January 3rd 2020 on Netflix.

Anne is a charming series loved by many, but one that hasn’t quite made it into the mainstream, and even though it is not being renewed, I believe it deserves to be celebrated and enjoyed by many now and in the years to come. The series is based on the 1908 children’s book Anne of Green Gables by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Knowing this, perhaps you might think the story would be aimed at children or not relevant to this day and age, however, within this series and the world seeded from Montgomery’s books are lessons that are relevant to everyone, and encourage us all to keep an open mind about the world.

As you watch, you will see that Anne is a child with a big heart and lots to say, even though she has been mistreated as an orphan, tossed from place to place and never shown real love, she has this amazing imagination and love for the world. When she comes to live at Green Gables with siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, it takes a while for everyone to accept for who she is. Avonlea is a town of closed-minded people, to which Anne is simultaneously a breath of fresh air and a force to be reckoned with.

Marilla and Matthew never intended to adopt her, they wanted a boy from the orphanage to help with the farm, but there was a miscommunication and they ended up with a girl. They nearly send her straight back, but Matthew, a shy and serious man, quite the opposite in personality to Anne, takes a liking to her and convinces Marilla to keep her.

At its heart, Anne is a coming-of-age story, but it is also the story of how one little girl transforms a whole town, opening peoples eyes to new possibilities and stamping out some of its prejudice. She stands up for people she feels are being wronged, whether it is herself or someone else, and often this sparks understanding in others.

The show tackles questions of sexuality, sexism, and racism and bullying in its storylines, things which are still very relevant today, and time and time again we see Anne do her utmost to help those who are treated badly because she knows herself just what it feels like. Beneath it all, of course, Anne is still a child, and her emotion sometimes overtakes her, she does things she ought not to, even though she may believe it is what is right. Many a time she is shunned by her friends for saying the wrong thing, or Marilla for her impulsiveness, Anne has a lot to learn just like everyone else. Even so, she brings so much to Avonlea, and it eventually repays her kindness in love, friendship and family, all the things she could only dream of until she met Matthew and Marilla.

It is a beautiful and at times heartbreaking tale and if nothing else, it is perfectly shot and cast. Amybeth Mcnulty (Anne) brings a passion to the role, every word she says full of heart. Geraldine James (Marilla) is brilliant, as are all the rest of the cast which includes R. H Thomson (Matthew), Korrine Koslo (Rachel Lynde), and Lucas Zumman (Gilbert Blythe). Every character feels so precisely written and acted, and you find yourself feeling everything the characters feel with intensity. It’s unlike any series I’ve ever seen for its emotional power, mainly because Anne goes through so many extreme highs and lows and cannot seem to let herself be in-between. Through all this, the camera is great at portraying this emotion, and revealing moments she or others are untruthful, or upset, or hurt. Even though so much is said, it is what isn’t said that makes everything so intense, as there is often a lack of proper communication between the characters. It is the drama of this that gets you interested, but you’ll stay for the unique outlook of the world Anne With an E gives you.

Long story short, I think you’ll love it as much as I do, but don’t just take my word for it, find out for yourself!

Anne With An E is a CBC and Netflix original series, produced by Northwood Entertainment and created by and produced by Moira Walley-Beckett. It is also produced by Miranda de Pencier, Debra Hayward, Alison Owen and Ken Girotti and John Calvert.

A fiery redhead is in your immediate future with the release of the second season of Netflix’s Anne With An E this weekend.

The first season premiered last year, inspired by the timeless Canadian novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Now, in the second season, Anne with an E continues to chart bold new territory, adding new characters and storylines while further exploring themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity and empowerment through the lens of its fierce, starry-eyed, irrepressible 14-year-old protagonist.

Season 1 ended with us wondering about the safety of the Cuthberts. In the finale, the two shady men that mugged their hired hand Jerry in town were now seen at Green Gables. The pair were responding to an ad that Marilla had placed as they were looking for boarders. They arrived separately and pretended not to know each other for purposes that could only be for nefarious reasons.

However, the season 2 trailer looks as though the Cuthberts are out of danger for a little while with a visit to the beach. Although, Lily Allen’s cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” with lyrics like “This could be the end of everything/So why don’t we go somewhere only we know?”
