When I read the synopsis of Across a Broken Shore, I knew it was the kind of book I would enjoy and I was happy to accept it. I was not disappointed at all. This book was filled with so much depth, feelings, and heavy subjects that I was not expecting. This book gave me all the feels and I connected with Willa from the first pages. It was unfortunate how her parents and older brothers—except Paddy—dictated her life and how she had been dealing with guilt for years over an accident that caused a tragedy she never meant to happen. Her family was grieving and no one knew how to deal with it. Willa’s determination to study medicine despite not having any support from her family and it wasn’t a profession women normally went into, was admirable. She was torn between duty and her wants. Seeing that struggle was what gave this book the complexity and Trueblood did an amazing job of showing it.

Willa was a strong female character who had become the obedient daughter since an accident some years prior to the book starting. It’s clear that Willa doesn’t have a strong relationship with her parents or any of her brothers besides Paddy. She does what is expected of her and will go into the convent in five months despite her interest in medicine.

The incident that changes the trajectory of Willa’s future, is when Paddy has an accident while working in the family bar. Nick, the eldest, and Willa are tasked with taking Paddy to a doctor since Willa’s twin brothers, Sean and Michael, are off on an errand and her father refuses to leave Willa in charge of the bar. They take him to see the doctor only to find out he retired and Doctor Katherine Winston is his replacement. Nick is shocked to see a woman who’s a doctor but Willa realises that their brother needs help and moves forward. She ends up being offered a job by Dr. Winston but is unsure about taking it. Willa has been reading medical books for a few years and because of her, Paddy did not lose too much blood. While talking with Willa, the doctor recognises Willa’s passion for the profession. Paddy is the one who eventually convinces Willa to take Dr. Winston up on her offer and he will help her figure out how to lie to their parents and other brothers. He realises it’s an opportunity for Willa to have hands on learning and he’s hoping she will go after what she wants.

During this, Willa also meets a young ironworker named Sam who is a drifter living in a boarding house in her neighbourhood and working on The Golden Gate Bridge. She starts working for the doctor and is learning a lot from her but she feels guilty at having to lie to her family about her whereabouts all the time. She and the doctor are called to help at the field hospital onsite for The Golden Gate Bridge and she sees Sam again. Later, she sees Simon—the son of a pregnant woman who Willa helped Dr. Winston treat—again as well when she learns he’s been stealing from the nurses at the field hospital. This leads to her learning about the state of the homeless people in San Francisco and sparks her nurturing and caring nature. The story progresses from there with Willa learning so much from Dr. Winston and growing closer to Sam, Simon and his family. She’s constantly going back and forth with herself and with others about what she will choose to do. I don’t want to give away the major points of this story but know that it ripped me apart and had me crying my eyes out by the end.

This was a well-written story about love, family, grief, guilt, and finding your way in the world. Willa was one of my favourite characters and her struggle became my struggle as I read Across a Broken Shore. It was clear she was trying to do what she thought was the right thing. She’s wracked with guilt and since no one has talked to her about it, she didn’t know how to get past it. I loved Sam. He was caring, sweet, and it was very clear that his feelings for Willa were immediate and real. He encouraged her and would never be the type of man to hold her back. I also liked Willa’s family. It was interesting how all of them were dealing with their grief the only way they knew how but by the end they had to deal with it together to move on. Dr. Winston was a strong female character who believed in Willa even when Willa could not believe in herself. She wanted to see the next generation of female doctors succeed and that’s why she took Willa under her wings. I loved Cara—Willa’s best friend—too because she was also a strong character who knew what she wanted out of life and went for it.

Across a Broken Shore was a heartbreaking, beautiful, and timely story about a young woman having to decide between family expectations and her dreams. Trueblood did a magnificent job of showing the internal struggle Willa was going through and showing a strong, tight-knit family. I enjoyed that there was a backdrop of a love that did not overshadow the overall story. This was another favourite for me and it will stick with me for a long time.

The last thing eighteen-year-old Wilhelmina “Willa” MacCarthy wants is to be a nun. It’s 1936, and as the only daughter amongst four sons, her Irish–Catholic family is counting on her to take her vows—but Willa’s found another calling. Each day she sneaks away to help Doctor Katherine Winston in her medical clinic in San Francisco’s Richmond District.

Keeping secrets from her family only becomes more complicated when Willa agrees to help the doctor at a field hospital near the new bridge being built over the Golden Gate. Willa thinks she can handle her new chaotic life, but as she draws closer to a dashing young ironworker and risks grow at the bridge, she discovers that hiding from what she truly wants may be her biggest lie of all.

Ten books. A dozen documentaries. Hours spent with a historian. Notebooks full of time-specific facts. This is how writing a Young Adult Historical book starts—lots and lots of research.

For my first YA Historical book, Nothing But Sky, I spent over a year teaching myself the ins and outs of barnstorming and how the mechanics of a biplane worked. I watched countless videos, talked to pilots, and even did an interview with a modern day wingwalker to understand what it must feel like to stand out on the wings of a plane soaring 500 feet above ground.

In the early drafts of that book, there were pages and pages of exposition I knew I wanted to include. But when I went back to read those first chapters, I realised I had a problem. My book read more like non-fiction than fiction.

What I learned through the process of writing YA Historical is that there needs to be a blend of history and narrative in order for the book to work. While you can use historical facts to set the tone, your book needs to be more about character and plot—a lesson I had to learn early on when critiques came back that my book was more “tell than show”.

Reading those critiques was painful, but I knew they were right. So, what did I do? I made a plan to ensure I was getting the balance right between history and story. Here’s what it looked like:

Write a complete synopsis of the narrative from beginning to end

Look at setting in each chapter and include specific historical elements to set the scene

Weave in small anecdotes from the time period that bring colour and context to the story but don’t detract from the pacing

Walk the readers onto the page, and into that moment of history, by including as many visceral details as possible – (sight, sound, scent, touch)

Once I had this plan in place, I tore apart the manuscript for Nothing But Sky. The main focus was on story first. When I was sure the narrative was solid, I went back and added historical details that had relevance.

For instance, there is a scene in my next book, Across a Broken Shore where the main character, Willa, visits a historical site in San Francisco called Sutro Baths. Back in the 1930s, it was an indoor bathhouse with six salt water pools. I did hours of research about the attraction. It would have been easy to flood the pages with historical facts, but then I’d lose the flow of the story. Instead, I only incorporated senses and period details that added to the scenes. I wanted the reader to feel like they’d walked into the bathhouse. Experience how the humidity made the men in wool suits and matching fedoras uncomfortable. How the smell of salt from the pools tinged the air. I wrote and revised that chapter at least thirteen times before I got the scene, balanced with a hint of historical fact, paced correctly.

The main thing to remember when writing historical fiction is that no matter how many real-life elements you want to include, story must always come first. It takes patience but if you get the balance between history and narrative right, you’ll take the reader on a journey they’ll never forget.

You can find Amy on Twitter and Instagram, along with at her website.

Can you tell our readers a little about you?

I’m the youngest of five and have been an avid reader since I was very young. My love of reading eventually turned into a passion for writing. My YA Historical books focus on young girls who love to crush societal boundaries. There may also be a dash of danger and a few kissing scenes, too!

When did it dawn upon you that you wanted to be a writer?

All my life I’ve had some type of writing going on. In college I studied journalism. After I graduated, I went on to work in entertainment eventually landing in the world of advertising and public relations. In all those jobs, writing was a prominent aspect whether it was editing copy or creating press releases. When my career came to a crossroads, I decided I wanted to try my hand at writing YA fiction. After the first chapters were on the page, I knew I was in the right place.

What is your favorite childhood book?

I always both love and hate this question because there are too many good books to choose from. If I had to pick one it would be Beverly Cleary’s Beezus and Ramona. I have two older sisters and I was like Ramona, constantly trailing after them and wanting to be included in all their antics.

Across a Broken Shore has such an interesting plot! Can you tell us a little about the book?

The book takes place in 1936 San Francisco and follows the story of eighteen-year-old Willa MacCarthy who is expected to carry on the family tradition and become a nun. But when she encounters the new neighborhood doctor who is female, she secretly goes to work with her to help care for the men building the Golden Gate Bridge.

What was the inspiration for this story?

It was two things:

First, I saw a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge someone posted online, and I started to think about the tough working conditions those men had to live through in order to build the bridge. Not more than a few minutes later, another image came up online of a woman named Lucy M. Wanzer. In 1876, she was the first woman west of the Rockies to get her medical degree. Coincidentally, she lived and practiced in San Francisco.

The fact that two connected images of San Francisco came up at once felt like the universe was telling me something. A few hours later, I had a rough outline of what would become Across a Broken Shore.

What sort of research did you do to write this book?

Very early on in the drafting process I took a research trip to San Francisco. I knew I couldn’t write about the building of the bridge if I didn’t walk across it myself. It was important for me to feel the sway under my feet, the whip of the wind across my face, in order to understand the real perils the men went through to build the bridge.

After basically buying every book possible about the bridge’s construction from the museum store, I then went and had a three-hour meeting with a local historian. He was born and raised in the Richmond neighborhood where my main character, Willa lives in the book. He read several drafts of the story and made sure all the historical elements were accurate.

If you had to describe Willa in three words, what would those three words be?

Determined, loving, and loyal.

Your story is set in the 1930s San Francisco. Why did you choose that as the setting for your book?

I knew the backdrop of this story had to include the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. I hadn’t seen the construction of the bridge tackled in any Young Adult books, and I wanted it to be an important thread. As the bridge changes and grows over the course of the book, so does Willa.

What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

That it’s okay to struggle with your purpose. Even in today’s modern times, teens have a lot of expectations piled on them, not only from their families but from society as well. I hope Willa’s story will show them that it’s within their rights to question their own path. To blaze an unexpected trail in spite of other people’s expectations.

Do you have a set schedule for writing, or are you one of those who write only when they feel inspired?

My mornings consist of two things: coffee and writing. I take the early part of the day to write. After lunch, I run errands, take care of email etc. If I’m on deadline, I write every day. If I’m plotting a new story, I may take off a day or two to do research or let the story marinate for a while before I head back to the computer.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Your time will come. Finish the story and then write the next one. It’s the only thing you can control in the publishing world.

Writing can be an emotionally draining and stressful pursuit. Any tips for aspiring writers?

I don’t write every day and I don’t think you have to in order to be successful. Sometimes my best story ideas come while my mind is not focused on writing. Little things like exercising, getting coffee with friends, or traveling opens my mind to new possibilities.

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with us?

I’m currently revising a YA Contemporary that plays off experiences I had while working in entertainment in L.A.. There’s also a YA Thriller currently sitting on my laptop that I’m anxious to finish too!

And one final question: do you have any book recommendations for us?

Of course! Here are some of my favorite recent YA reads with strong female leads:

Girls with Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young, We Walked the Sky by Lisa Fiedler, The Grace Year by Kim Liggett, The Deepest Roots by Miranda Asebedo, and The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee.
