Dragons have been everywhere in the bookish world recently, from Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series to Sarah A. Parker’s When the Moon Hatched, and even Taran Matharu’s Dragon Rider. Even in the wider world dragons are dominating: HBO’s House of the Dragon series is currently commandeering the small screen.

But when we think of dragons, what do we picture? Probably the enormous fire-breathing, winged creatures of olde: Smaug-type monsters that horde treasure in caves; Targaryen dragons that incinerate whole armies with just one flame-licked breath; huge creatures unfurling their leathery wings like those in Fourth Wing. The thing is, though, dragon lore goes way beyond these archetypes. The Girl With No Reflection, my upcoming debut YA fantasy novel, features Chinese dragons which are quite different—and a lot less familiar to mainstream audiences—than Western dragons.

How are they different? Well, for one, Chinese dragons typically don’t have wings. Instead, they are serpentine creatures with horns, manes and claws, and their ability to fly is magical rather than mechanically powered. And, instead of breathing fire, Chinese dragons tend to control the elements, especially water and wind. In traditional Chinese folklore, dragons impact the weather. It was a commonly-held belief that a displeased dragon god could bring about phenomena such as droughts, tidal waves, or floods.

Unlike in Western mythology, Eastern dragons are also depicted less as monstrous beasts, and more as god-like beings that represent prosperity and good fortune. While they can be mercurial, they are also wise and benevolent, living peacefully alongside humans and even helping us.

Throughout history, dragons were a symbol of Imperial power, and were closely linked to Chinese royalty. Since dragons were thought to represent ‘Yang’ (male energy), emperors were associated with dragons, and throughout many periods of Chinese history only royalty—and sometimes officials—were permitted to wear clothing decorated with dragon motifs. In Chinese culture, dragons are celebrated during events such as Chinese New Year and the Dragon Boat festival.

In the Chinese Zodiac, 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, so it’s the perfect time to read books about dragons! If you want to know more about books that do dragons a little differently, then read on…

In Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White, Amélie Wen Zhao concludes her Song of the Last Kingdom duology with a tale that is both beautiful and devastating. Set in a world where Elantian colonisers have invaded the Last Kingdom in search of legendary Demon Gods, the story follows two protagonists, Lan and Zen, each bound to a Demon God with the shared goal of defeating the Elantians by also destroying the powerful Gods.

Lan, fuelled by the memory of her mother’s death at the hands of Elantian invaders, is determined to complete her mother’s mission of destroying the Demon Gods. On the other hand, Zen, who made a pact with the Black Tortoise, is willing to sacrifice his own soul to save the Kingdom and the girl he loves. However, he needs more power than a single Demon God can provide and seeks to resurrect an undead army led by his late great-grandfather. Both of them will have to discover the truth behind their own past as well as the truth behind the Imperial family and other secrets of the Kingdom that will lead them to make decisive choices.

The novel weaves a complex narrative as Lan and Zen embark on their quests, each facing internal struggles with their own meaning of power and with the Demon Gods bound to them—the Silver Tiger and the Black Tortoise. Their journeys are fraught with challenges, as the young protagonists are not the only ones in pursuit of the Demon Gods. The Elantians want to acquire them too and continue their conquest and destroy the Kingdom. Lan and Zen’s separate hunts will bring them together numerous times throughout the novel only to separate them again and again.

Wen Zhao’s prose is gorgeous, and her storytelling is always reminiscent of Xianxia novels. The reader will be drawn into a world filled with magic, demons, and a richly developed story. The writing evokes a sense of ache, longing, and love that complements well the mostly slow pace of the book. However, at times the pacing can also feel pretty rushed which clashes with the stagnant moments of the novel.

All in all, equally beautiful and devastating, Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White is an enchanting conclusion to the Song of the Last Kingdom duology that explores themes of choice, truth, and the consequences of one’s actions.

Love a mythology retelling? You are in the right place! Books inspired by the myths and legends of ancient worlds have grown wildly in popularity, largely thanks to #BookTok. The trend is showing no signs of slowing down in 2023, with a host of exciting new releases.

The Kingdom is under the Elantian regime. Elantians have killed civilians with their metal bound magic, and outlawed the people’s magic. Lan, our protagonist, is a songgirl with a mysterious and untranslatable mark on her wrist. A mark only visible to her and which was her mother’s last act before she was killed by the invaders. In her journey to uncover the secrets of her mark, she will discover the ways of a world she previously only knew through folktales. One night, whilst she’s working at the Teahouse she is cornered by the enemies and hurt, and the only way to stay alive is for her to run away with the boy she met that same night. Zen, a practitioner whose magic derives from demons, senses strong qì magic within her. Together, they set off on a journey to escape from Elantian magicians and soldiers whilst uncovering the mystery and truth about Lan’s powerful mark. She will have to learn to draw energy from her surroundings and find balance in her energy in order to make it out alive. Will they manage to protect the nation or will they unleash the demons that sleep at its heart?

In the beginning, when we meet Lan, she appears to be a strong and confident girl. Even so, as the story progresses, even though she still has those qualities, we also get to see a more vulnerable side of her, especially with the way that the colonial regime impacted her (stealing her name and identity). We don’t get to know Zen on the same deeper level as Lan but he does have a dark past of his own and intricate feelings and motivations. It’s thanks to their respective experiences with trauma that they get to form a deeper connection. Overall, all the characters in the book are fleshed out really nicely. They all have believable motivations and backstories and nice character development even though this is only the first book. Song of Silver has a wonderful cast with realistic relationships and who struggle to determine where their loyalties lie. We do see some typical YA tropes in the book but they are used effectively.

Romance is not a central point in the story, nonetheless, we do see some sort of a relationship develop between Lan and Zen. The end of the book puts them both in a tough position, so it will be interesting to see how their relationship moves forward in the second book. Two characters who love each other deeply also have an ill fated ending in this book so it would be great to see more of their relationship in the second book as well!

Something really interesting about Song of Silver is how the author used Lan’s lack of knowledge about the magic system and some bits of history to build the world for us the readers. Zhao managed to do it wonderfully in a way that does not feel like complete exposition. The worldbuilding is delicate and it’s extremely rooted in history. The qì-based magic system focused on its duality and balance with yin and yang is also so well thought-out. One would think that the historical intricacy along with the complex magic system focused on qì energy would make the novel hard to read but that wasn’t the case. The author truly weaved it into the story so well with a writing that is very lyrical. Not only that but Zhao’s passion and knowledge of Chinese folklore, culture, and history do shine through the pages of Song of Silver. All these elements, along with the way the author explores the passage of time and the impacts of coloniatsion on future generations, do set the book apart from similar stories.

The book is rather long which allows for a slower burn. However, it’s action packed and well paced so there’s never a dull moment. There are some plot twists that one may or may not see coming but all the chapters end in a way that make the reader not want to put the book down. Since this book is the first one in a duology, there are still some unanswered questions which hopefully will be resolved in the sequel. The story does build up to a cliffhanger as well so waiting for the sequel will be a struggle!

Overall, Amélie Wen Zhao created a solid fabulous start to a new fantasy series. With themes of self discovery of one’s power, strong magic, found family with a splash of romance, war conflicts,  and a ton of vivid mythology, Song of Silver is the perfect book for fans of the Chinese xiānxiá fantasy genre.

Blood Heir is Amelie Wen Zhao’s debut and the first instalment in an epic new series that follows the story of Princess Anastacya Mikhailov of Cyrilia who has lived her life in safety, hidden behind palace walls. She is later framed for her father’s brutal murder and must leave behind everything she has ever known to find his killer and prove her innocence.

Alone, on the run, desperate, and in danger, there is only one person who could help vindicate the princess. He is Ramson Quicktongue, a cunning, silver-tongued crime lord of the Cyrilian underworld. Though Ramson has sinister plans of his own, he may have met his match in Ana as the princess might just be the most dangerous player of them all.

This particular book was subject to controversy towards the end of 2018 as the author was slammed on Twitter for being offensive. The author was also subject to cyberbulling which led to a decision of retracting this book from publication. I read the blurb and the sample at the time and could not understand the controversy. I was elated, as were my friends, when I heard the book went ahead for publication and we were given the opportunity to be early readers as part of a blogger-buddy read along.

Starting this book on the first day of 2020 was the best start to the new year. Blood Heir was a fast paced and interesting read that I could not put down. I would rate this one of the best books we have read in some time. Personally, I felt this book sent me on a wild ride. From beginning to end I was quite impressed with the plot, characterisation, and pacing, not to mention the mystery surrounding Princess Anastacya’s plight and Ramson’s character. The story is full of twists and turns and it’s not afraid of being brutal and ripping apart this calm world. Whilst the inspiration of the Russian tale was there, I could see this book standing apart from the original tale.

I enjoyed both Ana and Ramson as characters and found them interesting as they formed an unlikely alliance but were worlds apart in their own minds. I enjoyed the dialogue between the two – their constant banter and sarcasm, they were both quite humorous and what made me enjoy them most was my inability to determine who to trust more as both blind sided me with their next moves as the story went on. I also really warmed up to the supporting character, May.

Now this book is finally in bookstores, I hope readers get a chance to sink their teeth into this one and enjoy it as much as I did and hopefully be their own judge for this story. Personally I really enjoyed it and I am trying to sit tight for the sequel.
