Further horror is coming to AMC with their new television series, NOS4A2, which stars Zachary Quinto

The supernatural horror series NOS4A2, based on Joe Hill’s bestselling novel of the same name, tells the story of Charlie Manx, a seductive immortal who feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland – an icy, twisted Christmas village of Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Manx finds his whole world threatened when a young woman in New England discovers she has a dangerous gift.

Zachary Quinto plays Charlie Manx, while Ashleigh Cummings plays Vic McQueen, a young, working class artist who discovers she has a supernatural ability to track the seemingly immortal Charlie Manx. As part of her official character description, it says “what Vic lacks in social confidence, she makes up for in courage, humor, and tough-as-nails grit.”

In a statement, author Joe Hill expressed his excitement about his novel being produced by AMC.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the forthcoming adaptation of NOS4A2. I know it’s in good hands with showrunner Jami O’Brien: her beautifully composed scripts show a writer at the height of her powers, one who has an exquisite touch with character and a relentless instinct for suspense,” said Hill. “AMC’s record speaks for itself: who wouldn’t want to be in business with the ‘Mad Men’ who ‘Broke Bad’ and made ‘The Dead Walk?’ And Tornante’s dedication to bringing singular visions to TV has freed everyone involved to do their best and truest work. I can’t wait to see Vic McQueen turn the throttle and go after Charlie Manx. Let’s ride.”

The series stars Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), Ashleigh Cummings (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries), Olafur Darri Olafsson (The Deep) as Bing Partridge, Virginia Kull (Big Little Lies) as Linda McQueen, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Punisher) as Chris McQueen, Jahkara Smith (of YouTube fame) as Maggie Leigh, Karen Pittman (Luke Cage) as Angela Brewster, Rarmian Newton (Nightmares & Dreamscapes) as Drew, Darby Camp (Big Little Lies) as Haley Smith, and Ashley Romans (Shameless) as Tabitha Hutter.

Jami O’Brien (Fear the Walking Dead) created the show for television, and will serve as showrunner and executive producer, along with executive producers Joe Hill and Lauren Corrao, Co-President of Tornante Television. Tom Brady (Colony) serves as co-executive producer and Henry Bronchtein (Sopranos) will line produce. The series is produced by AMC Studios in association with Tornante Television.

NOS4A2 premieres June 2nd at 10pm ET on AMC with 10 episodes in the first season.

Based on the best-selling novel by Sarai Walker, AMC’s new television series Dietland is a darkly comedic story that explores a multitude of issues faced by women today.

Dietland is a wickedly funny and extraordinarily timed satire about Plum Kettle, a ghostwriter for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines. Struggling with self-image and fed up with how she’s treated by her boss and society, Plum sets out on a wildly complicated road to self-awakening. At the same time, everyone is buzzing over news reports about men, accused of sexual abuse and assault, who are disappearing and meeting untimely, violent deaths.

Plum also finds herself in the middle of two factions – one sisterhood who may be responsible for the attacks on male harassers, and the other which preaches female empowerment. She straddles these two groups, trying to make sense of the changing world and her part in it.

Equal parts revenge fantasy and heartfelt journey to self-acceptance, Dietland, which is based on Sarai Walker’s 2015 best-selling critically acclaimed novel of the same name, is a darkly comedic story that explores a multitude of issues faced by women today – including patriarchy, misogyny, rape culture, and unrealistic beauty standards.

CHARACTERS

Plum Kettle: Plum lives in Brooklyn and works for Daisy Chain, ghostwriting the “Dear Kitty” advice column for the fashion magazine’s self-involved editor. She’s waged a lifelong battle with her weight, and while saving money for weight loss surgery, a mysterious woman enters her lonely life. Her world is upturned by two rival factions – caught between old ideas and radical new extremes, Plum must decide for herself what it means to be a revolutionary as the “war of the sexes” becomes literal.

Kitty Montgomery: Kitty is a glamorous, wildly ambitious senior executive at Austen Media where she oversees many magazines including Daisy Chain, which she was instrumental in launching and building and therefore holds a special place in her heart. Passive-aggressive, self-involved, and impassioned in the most superficial way possible, Kitty feels a unique connection with her readers, whom she affectionately calls “my girls” and is convinced she’s really helping them. Her world is thrown into complete chaos when an unknown organization starts targeting people in her orbit. Sucked into a terrifying news cycle, Kitty can no longer rely on her old-school media power and must instead play a whole new game of master manipulation where rules no longer apply.

Verena Baptist: The author of the anti-dieting screed Dietland, Verena is a body-positive therapist who notoriously exposed the secrets of her family’s weight-loss program as a pyramid scheme – she’s a woman on a mission. Verena possesses a beauty that is natural yet imposing; with a commanding presence, she’s made it her life’s work “to be assertive and bold in fighting all forms of misogyny and gender inequality.” Verena runs Calliope House, a collective of women who have been marginalized, and reaches out to Plum, eager to provide her with a new way of looking at her life. Her peaceful feminist principles are thrown into doubt when an underground group of vigilantes begins taking matters into their own hands and shaking up the patriarchy.

Julia: Crisp in appearance and a fast talker, Julia is the manager at “the beauty closet,” an underground warehouse filled with every kind of beauty product imaginable. She is welcoming and warm, but she’s not all she appears to be and is capable of being sternly assertive and controlling. Julia is on a mission to deprogram the women of the world on what it means to be beautiful, and wants Plum to be on her team by providing her with the contact information for all of “Kitty’s Girls.”

Dominic O’Shea: Handsome and confident, Dominic is a rough-around-the-edges NYPD detective who’s hired by Kitty to investigate a hack at Daisy Chain. While at the magazine’s offices, he easily strikes up a conversation with Plum. Charming in a very approachable way, he seems genuinely interested in Plum, who is slightly wary of his motives.

Starring Joy Nash (Twin Peaks), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Robin Weigert (Big Little Lies), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Erin Darke (Good Girls Revolt), Adam Rothenberg (Ripper Street), Tramell Tillman, Rowena King (Of Kings and Prophets), Will Seefried (The Deuce), and Ricardo Davila (Instinct).

Dietland premieres June 4th 9/8c on AMC with a double episode.

If you would like to check out the book, you can learn more about it on Goodreads or purchase it from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.

Brave the rough seas in AMC’s new television series The Terror, which stars Jared Harris, Ciarán Hinds and Tobias Menzies.

Inspired by a true story, The Terror centers on the British Royal Navy’s perilous voyage into unchartered territory as the crew attempts to discover the Northwest Passage. Faced with treacherous conditions, limited resources, dwindling hope and fear of the unknown, the crew is pushed to the brink of extinction. Frozen, isolated and stuck at the end of the earth, The Terror highlights all that can go wrong when a group of men, desperate to survive, struggle not only with the elements, but with each other.

Jared Harris plays Captain Francis Crozier, who is captain of the HMS Terror and second in command of the expedition. Francis Crozier is a peerless sailor, but also an Irishman who has reached his glass ceiling in Her Majesty’s Royal Navy. He’s had to accept his second-class status without internalising it even as he sees his accomplishments again and again go unrecognised and his expert advice unheeded. When disaster strikes the expedition and he finally has a chance to prove himself, will he be able to face down his many demons and rise to the challenge of saving his men?

The captain of HMS Erebus and commander of the expedition is Sir John Franklin (Ciarán Hinds), who is an experienced leader with a blemished record in the Royal Navy, a man “everyone likes, but no one respects.” He saw men die under his leadership on a previous polar expedition, and, nearing the end of his uneven career, would like to retire in full glory as the man who finally discovered the Northwest Passage. But despite his best efforts, his ambition puts his men in horrible danger and he must try to undo the damage caused by his Victorian hubris.

Then there’s Captain James Fitzjames (Tobias Menzies), who is second in command of Erebus and third in command of the expedition, James Fitzjames is a rising star in the British Royal Navy. He has secured John Franklin’s confidence in spite of his never having sailed in the polar regions before, and develops an enmity toward Crozier. Fitzjames perceives Crozier as a joyless alcoholic bore, but he secretly knows that Crozier sees through his self-aggrandizing bluster. And Crozier is not wrong: When the expedition finds itself in desperate straits, the confident mask Fitzjames presents to the world begins to slip, revealing a man with crippling secrets.

The Terror stars Jared Harris (The Crown), Ciarán Hinds (Red Sparrow), Tobias Menzies (Outlander), Adam Nagaitis (The Commuter), Paul Ready (Utopia), Nive Nielsen and Ian Hart (The Last Kingdom).

The new series premieres March 26th 9/8c on AMC.

AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead returns with the second half of Season 3 after its mid-season finale in July.

Season 3 saw our characters being split up by the events of the previous season, and after the tragic and unexpected death of Travis (Cliff Curtis), the core group took up residence on the ranch of Jeremiah Otto (Dayton Callie). Their new home caused Jeremiah develop a bond with Nick (Frank Dillane) and Madison (Kim Dickens), but his feud with a tribe of Native Americans led by Walker (Michael Greyeyes) caused a significant problem. However, in the mid-season finale, we saw Nick kill Jeremiah to help stop the impending war with Walker’s Nation, and then Madison covering things up and claiming Jeremiah had committed suicide.

As for the rest of the group, Madison and her family were going to try to save Broke Jaw Ranch; Daniel is at the dam; Strand is trying to make it back after Daniel left him for dead; Ofelia is working with Walker, who has an uneasy truce with Madison and the people who defended the ranch.

The official synopsis for the mid-season premiere is short and sweet, but hopefully holds the promise of some exciting scenes.

“In the aftermath of the Clark family’s actions, new leadership assumes control of the Ranch. Daniel assists Lola in the distribution of water.”

Executive producer Dave Erickson teased an upcoming big bad in an interview with Syfy Wire:

“There will be nobody in the immediate first few episodes, but we will meet a character down the road who represents a greater danger and evil than anybody we’ve met to this point. And it’s someone who I think Jeremiah Otto will pale in comparison to him. So there’s the potential of a Big Bad that will come to the fore later on. As the family comes together, and it will be somewhat traumatic and somewhat violent if they do come together, they need to be in opposition to something. So one of the things we’ll thread into the story as we get towards the end is who that force is, who that person is.”

Fans will be treated to two hour-long episodes titled ‘Minotaur’ and ‘Diviner’, with another six episodes rounding out the second half of the season plus the show already renewed for a fourth season.

The mid-season premiere airs September 10th at 9pm (Eastern Time) on AMC.

Fear the Walking Dead’s mid-season finale pulled no punches and it was a surprisingly shocking and tense episode that had me glued to the screen for two hours. With the fight against Walker taking full attention this week, it was an intense ride to the end.

It seems that the first thing that needs to be talked about, as usual, is Madison Clark. Her arc over this season has become progressively more and more desperate as she has become ever more determined to keep both her family safe and herself in a position of leadership at Broke Jaw Ranch. This all came to a head in ‘The Unveiling/ Children of Wrath’, as Madison took control of many of the attacks upon Walker’s reservation.

She was so determined to not lose Alicia to Walker that she spearheaded the attack to rescue her, while also returning Ofelia and stealing the relics trailer that Walker held dear. As a leader, she is resorting to as many violent means as she needs to keep the ranch and her people alive.

The best part of these two episodes though was the fact that the writers managed to convey both sides distress and motivations in a believable way. Through both Alicia’s time as hostage and the return of Ofelia (Mercedes Mason), we learnt a lot about the head of Blackhat Reservation.

Walker is no longer just the violent leader of a group determined to get their land back at all costs. Now he is a leader that not only wants his land back, but is trying to the best by his people and provide them with a way of living through the apocalypse. He talks of how his people, the First People, have been prophesized to reclaim the land once more and shows Alicia the bones of his grandfather, who was buried on the land that Jeremiah now owns.

Like last week these episodes were truly about leadership and who deserved to stand up if Jeremiah was to kick the bucket. Obviously, Madison set herself up as a prominent replacement but so did Jake. He nearly got scalped in an effort to bring peace and despite being sick helped everyone with the anthrax attack. Nick also stood out as a leader, joining Troy’s militia and fighting off an anthrax attack before stepping up and doing what had to be done after he found out Jeremiah’s secret.

The tension of the Walker conflict continued to escalate until the last fifteen minutes or so. Madison revealed that she had always done what needed to be done, telling a haunting tale of how she killed her own father to protect her family before the apocalypse, as a way to reinforce the reason why she hid Troy’s secret (killing the Vernon’s) from Alicia. This directly led into why she went and asked Jeremiah to kill himself, the price Walker requested in return for peace. It also serves as a reason to explain why Nick killed him in the final moments, as he is following in his mother’s belief of doing what needs to be done.

It was hard to feel sorry for Jeremiah or think that Nick didn’t make the right decision by the end of the episode as the Dayton Callie’s did an excellent job of portraying Jeremiah as a racist and conflicted character. The reveal that he had killed Walker’s family years before made it easier for his death to be accepted as a suitable way of gaining peace.

Aside from all the drama featured at Broke Jaw, the second half of the finale featured Strand as well. Strand is in a desperate situation, alone and without a home and on the verge of giving up. He found the Abigail again and, after a brief and interesting conversation with a Cosmonaut, ended up burning it and leaving it behind. It was good to see his leaving of his past behind him and hopefully his story demands more attention in the second half of the season.

Fear the Walking Dead set itself up to be a serious contender to the original show this season. However, its lacking in Strand and Salazar’s divergent plotlines needs to be explored more in the future. Apart from this it was good to see that maybe our survivors aren’t on the right/good side of this conflict as they originally thought and the finale provided a brilliant end to the Walker/ Broke Jaw conflict.

What do you think of the first half of Season 3? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Preacher took a more sombre tone with its third episode, ‘Damsels’. The trademark dark humour the show has come to be known for was still present, especially in the first half, but for the most part this episode took a step back and allowed the plot to move forward.

‘Damsels’ saw the return of Eugene Root (Ian Colletti) and Tracy Loach (Gianna LePera), the first time these characters have appeared since season one. In a scene that was reminiscent of the Saint of Killers introduction, viewers discover how Tracey ended up in her comatose state, and how this led to Eugene’s attempted suicide that transformed him into the man he was. Hell was a useful tool for providing these flashbacks to before the accident, but it was a very brief moment.

Too soon the story returned to Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy, who were busy searching for God in the jazz clubs of New Orleans. Once more the characters divided into two groups, and this allowed the story to divulge into two directions.

It felt like Tulip was kind of acting like a child in the first scenes of ‘Damsels’ but it quickly changed once her and Cassidy left the jazz clubs behind. The quieter tones of her story included opening up to Cassidy about the threat of Victor and her past as a hitman. It was great to see Cassidy be something more than comedic relief, or a character that does whatever Jesse and Tulip says, in this episode. His impassioned speech about being useful was something that Tulip needed to hear, although she pretty much dismissed it.

Her confrontation with Victor’s men at the end of the episode was a nice ending to the episode. It is divulging the plot even further beyond that of the search for God and will mean that more about Tulip’s mysterious past will be revealed in the upcoming episodes.

On the hunt for God, Jesse was finding failure in almost every club. It wasn’t until a tip from a bartender that he found Lara Featherstone (Julie Ann Emery), a jazz singer. After asking Jesse to meet, Lara was kidnapped by some unknown people dressed in white suits. The choreography of the fight scene here was brilliantly done, and it served as a reminder that Jesse also has a dark past in the show.

Lara began preparations to leave but in the process filled Jesse in on her kidnappers. She alleged that the group was a sect of crypto-religious nuts bent on ruling the world. She neglects to mention why these people are after her, but in the final moments, after Jesse and her have parted ways it is revealed that she is part of this group. And they now know that Jesse has Genesis., which he used in this episode, so the Saint of Killers is most likely right on their tail again.

It seems that in episode four Hell is going to have a prison break. Eugene returned at the end of the episode to discover his cell empty and a new partner to help him escape. In one of the more comedic moments of the series this turned out to be Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor), now sporting a pot belly.

‘Damsels’ not only provided a solid story based episode, but it managed to introduce a whole bunch of new characters and really start the ball rolling for season two of Preacher.
