We chat with author Alex North about The Man Made of Smoke, which is a story of fathers and sons, shadows and secrets, and the fight we all face to escape the trauma of the past.

Hi, Alex! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi there! Thanks for having me on the site. I’m 48 years old and live in Leeds, UK, with my wife and son. My first book as Alex North, The Whisper Man, came out in 2018, but I wrote ten books before that under a different name. I studied Philosophy at Leeds University, and then worked in the Sociology department there for a while. When I’m not writing – which is most of the time – I’m probably either reading, listening to music, watching films, going to the gym, or trying to stop doomscrolling and get some sleep.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

It’s been with me for as long as I can remember. Books were a big thing in my house growing up, and I used to love weekend trips to the local library. When I was a kid, my mother would fold sheets of paper into a book, sew the edge, and encourage me to write stories inside. It never really occurred to me that I would do anything else. I have a strong memory of messing up a maths test at school when I was eleven and thinking “It doesn’t matter – I’m going to be a writer.”

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

The first book you ever remember reading: As a kid, I had this old, battered book of fairytales and children’s stories, some of which I learned later came from Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffmann. Terrifying stuff. I remember the story about the tailor with enormous scissors bursting in and cutting off the little boy’s thumbs.

The one that made you want to become an author: Anything by Diana Wynne Jones, but probably Power of Three.

The one that you can’t stop thinking about: I mean, I can stop thinking about anything if I try, but maybe All The Colours Of The Dark by Chris Whitaker. It’s been a while since I loved a book so much.

Your latest novel, The Man Made of Smoke, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Despair. Acceptance.

What can readers expect?

Okay, so now I need to explain those five words!

First and foremost, The Man Made of Smoke is a psychological thriller about Dan Garvie, who has a terrifying encounter with a serial killer as a child and grows up to become a criminal psychologist. When Dan’s father goes missing, he returns to his childhood home to investigate, and begins to discover possible links to that old crime. And on that level, I hope a reader can expect tension, mystery, surprises and scares, and characters they’ll come to care deeply about.

But the book also involves Dan revisiting and processing some very painful memories. It’s about coming to terms with our mistakes in the past, which is why the five sections of the book are titled after the five stages of grief and trauma.

Where did the inspiration for The Man Made of Smoke come from?

The initial idea was always the M.O. of the serial killer in the story – which is something I can’t talk about, as it’s not revealed until halfway through the book! But I sat on that particular idea for a long time, trying and failing to find a way to make it work. I couldn’t figure it out, but it wouldn’t go away. It was only when I came up with the very first scene in the book – a teenage boy experiencing something frightening at a service station – that things started to click into place.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

There are always the good days when the writing flows, but what I enjoy most is when some little detail that’s been there since the first draft suddenly makes sense and takes on a larger meaning. Survivors of the killer in The Man Made of Smoke all remember fairylights strung between the trees in the location he takes them to. That detail was in the book from the very beginning, but I had absolutely no idea why, and I kept thinking I should take it out. It was only at the very end of the final draft that I realised what it meant – at pretty much the exact same point that Dan does in the book. Those moments are great. It can feel like ‘past you’ gave you an amazing present, and you’ve just figured out how to unwrap it.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

All the usual ones. I wish I was the kind of writer who gets everything correct first time, but I’m not. It takes a lot of drafts to get to the finished book. I always need to write it a few times before I work out what it should have been all along. Which is exactly as irritating as it sounds.

With a number of books to your name, what are some of the key lessons you’ve learned since your debut?

It never gets easier – it gets harder, and I think that it should – but you start to become familiar with certain stages in the process. Every book is a little bit like climbing a mountain, and you learn to recognise the steep bits and the places to rest. You begin feeling certain things and think to yourself “Oh, so I’m at that point, am I?” The key lesson there for me is that I know I can do it, even if it feels impossible. There’ll be countless times when I’ll say “I can’t do this” to my wife, and she’ll tell me “yeah, that’s what you always say.” Which is true. And it’s reassuring to keep that in mind even if it doesn’t help all that much when you’re in the thick of things.

What’s next for you?

Another book. I’ve got it all planned out and have made a tentative start on it, and it feels okay at the moment. But we’ll see how that goes…

Lastly, what books are you looking forward to picking up this year?

I don’t know, really – it’s nice to be surprised by some random pick. To cheat and answer a slightly different question, a few I’ve read recently and really enjoyed would be We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough, The Impossible Thing by Belinda Bauer, and The Midnight King by Tariq Ashkenani. They were all great.

Will you be picking up The Man Made of Smoke? Have you already? Tell us in the comments below!

A dark, suspenseful new thriller about the mysteries of fate, the unbreakable bond of siblings, and a notorious serial killer who was said to know the future.

Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Alex North’s The Angel Maker, which is out now!

Growing up in a beautiful house in the English countryside, Katie Shaw lived a charmed life. At the cusp of graduation, she had big dreams, a devoted boyfriend, and a little brother she protected fiercely. Until the day a violent stranger changed the fate of her family forever.

Years later, still unable to live down the guilt surrounding what happened to her brother, Chris, and now with a child of her own to protect, Katie struggles to separate the real threats from the imagined. Then she gets the phone call: Chris has gone missing and needs his big sister once more.

Meanwhile, Detective Laurence Page is facing a particularly gruesome crime. A distinguished professor of fate and free will has been brutally murdered just hours after firing his staff. All the leads point back to two old cases: the gruesome attack on teenager Christopher Shaw, and the despicable crimes of a notorious serial killer who, legend had it, could see the future.

Paul Adams has not returned to his hometown since leaving for college, a deliberate choice made in an attempt to put his past behind him. He grew up in a relatively poor town and faced the same struggles as many other adolescents, trying to find his place with school, friendships, and a first crush. Yet his experiences were not entirely ordinary, not even close. In high school one of his dearest friends was murdered. And Paul was accused of this gruesome act, taken in for questioning before the true murderers were identified. It turned out that the murderers were also friends of his. One confessed to what he had done, but the other simply disappeared without a trace, leaving the community wondering about him for years to come.

Twenty-five years after this horrifying event, Paul is forced to return home to see his mother one last time before she passes. Not surprisingly, being back in town stirs up many memories and emotions for him. And, although his mother is quite ill, in rare moments of lucidity she urges him that something is “in” his childhood home. Full of panic, she seemingly warns him that something terrible is at hand. Uncertain what she means by these statements, Paul considers they may not mean anything at all. Anything that will ever make sense to him, that is. However as the days pass by, strange things begin to happen and Paul begins to wonder if his mother may actually be trying to send him an urgent message, a vital clue before she dies.

As Paul spends his time saying goodbye to his mother and attempting to decode her cryptic words, he also learns of several murders which bear a striking resemblance to that of his close friend in high school. One just happened recently, in fact, about a hundred miles away and a shrewd detective sees the same links as Paul. Despite the lack of concern from her co-workers, she follows her intuition and continues to pursue a link among these cases. Between the two of them, can the truth be uncovered? And, if so, at what cost?

North’s narrative travels back and forth between the past and the present, revealing bit by bit what really happened leading up to and on the day of the murder so many years ago. And, as one might expect, things are not exactly what they seem. As the story progresses, he draws connections to the other murders which have occurred in the wake of the first, leading the reader to question more and more how they might be connected. Mostly predictable in plot, The Shadows does slip in one great twist which the reader is unlikely to see coming and it is this twist which sustains the latter part of the novel. North’s writing is solid, his characters likeable, however this one may fall a bit short of expectations for fans of his debut novel The Whisper Man.

The Shadows is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore. Many thanks to Celadon Books for providing me with an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

Synopsis | Goodreads

The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times bestseller The Whisper Man

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile–always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet–and inspired more than one copycat.

Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree–and his victim–were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and senile, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.

It’s not long before things start to go wrong. Reading the news, Paul learns another copycat has struck. His mother is distressed, insistent that there’s something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago.

It wasn’t just the murder.

It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again…

Tom and Jake move to a little village where Tom hopes for not so much a new beginning, but something better for himself and Jake in the wake of his wife’s death — Rebecca.

Jake is a sensitive kid, the kind that you would find drawing in class while everyone else is playing. Tom on the other hand doesn’t quite know how to respond to Jake. It’s as if without the buffer of Rebecca to translate what his little guy says and does, he is adrift. He is quick to irritation and being practical at heart, he doesn’t always ask the questions he should of Jake, and assumes the simplest answer.

That’s not to say he isn’t trying, because he is. But he’s also grieving too. So when he hears Jake talking to someone who isn’t there, he gets irritated that Jake hasn’t grown out of talking to imaginary friends, but in reality, that’s when things get creepy — and where Alex North’s immense talent at creating atmosphere in this book takes off.

At the same time readers are introduced to these two, they are also introduced to the case underlying this book: a missing boy, and his links to a predator, The Whisper Man, from decades before. The detectives, Pete and Amanda, on the case are interesting and represent two very different POVs into the case.

Pete, in particular, having caught The Whisper Man before is a controlled man, in a constant battle against the desire to drink. This case ruined him, but that’s not an excuse for his alcoholism and the decisions that led him to be where he is.

Amanda is finding this case to be her Whisper Man case, the one that will consume her and linger with her all the time. She is focused and determined, and she and Pete complement each other well… even more so when North draws the different threads of these characters together.

A young boy who is a prominent character in a book that involves a case about kidnapped young boys… you know what’s coming right?

But, wonderfully, that’s hardly the most important and interesting part of this book. North crafts relationships and characters that are compelling and emotional and an atmosphere that creeped me out because, among other things, I kept questioning is Jake seeing something supernatural? Is there a simpler explanation for it? Perhaps, perhaps not.

My one problem with this book is the desire to push a romance that really didn’t go anywhere, and stuck out in what was otherwise an utterly engrossing read.

The Whisper Man is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.

Synopsis | Goodreads

If you leave a door half-open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken…

Still devastated after the loss of his wife, Tom Kennedy and his young son Jake move to the sleepy village of Featherbank, looking for a fresh start.

But Featherbank has a dark past. Fifteen years ago a twisted serial killer abducted and murdered five young boys. Until he was finally caught, the killer was known as ‘The Whisper Man’.

Of course, an old crime need not trouble Tom and Jake as they try to settle in to their new home. Except that now another boy has gone missing. And then Jake begins acting strangely.

We’re at the halfway point of 2019! For many of us, that’s some scary news, however, there’s plenty of exciting book releases to look forward to!

To kick off the second half of the year, July sees Riley Sager, Michele Campbell, and Paul Tremblay deliver the thrills, while Kayln Josephson and Elizabeth Lim bring the fantasy, and Jasmine Guillory gifts us with a great new romance novel.

Well-known and best-selling authors Ruth Ware and Philippa Greggory deliver new novels in August, along with thrillers from Alex North and Lauren North, a debut YA fantasy novel from Erin A. Craig, and a fun romance from Hannah Orenstein.

September has some highly anticipated books awaiting us with the final instalment in Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight series, a sequel to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and of course, a new novel from the King himself, Stephen King. If you’re in need of some fantasy, be sure to turn to Adrienne Young, Tamsyn Muir, and Alix E. Harrow.

With only three months left, October holds Leigh Bardugo’s first adult fantasy novel, along with exciting titles from Garth Nix, Renée Ahdieh, Christina Lauren, and Joe Hill. Plus there’s also Thomas Wheeler and Frank Miller’s graphic novel Cursed, which is a twist on King Arthur and will be adapted into a Netflix series in May 2020 starring Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).

As for November, there’s plenty of fantasy to get lost in from authors such as Erin Morgenstern, Holly Black, Amélie Wen Zhao, and Maggie Stiefvater. Or perhaps be in suspense with a new novel by Mary Higgins Clark or follow a romance in Andie J. Christopher’s Not The Girl You Marry.

To end the year, enjoy new novels from Josh Malerman, Jeff Lindsay, Sara Shepard, Tomi Adeyemi, Damien Angelica Walters, and Tarryn Fisher.
