October is the spooky season with tricks, treats, and terror filling the air. It’s also when ghosts, ghouls, and supernatural beings make themselves known. Halloween is the perfect time for horror films and TV specials with most TV shows having at least one Halloween themed episode, while others have more and sometimes these episodes are linked. Here are a variety of fun and scary episodes from 31 TV shows, so sit back, relax and enjoy watching your favourite characters on this frightening feast day!

1. Friends: The One with the Halloween Party (Season 8 Episode 6)

Halloween arrives in New York as Monica and Chandler throw a costume party for the gang. Chandler has a costume mishap resulting in him wearing a pink bunny costume, Joey comes as Chandler, Phoebe as Supergirl, Monica as Catwoman and Ross as “Spud-Nik”, Rachel wears a fancy dress before she can no longer fit in it due to her pregnancy. Her maternal feelings cause her to give out all the candy resorting to giving money instead. Sean Penn guest stars as Ursula’s fiancé.

2. Modern Family: Halloween, The Last Halloween (Season 2 Episode 6, Season 11 Episode 5)

Spooky season is a big deal in suburban Los Angeles resulting in seven different Halloween episodes in this series. The first Halloween episode showcases Claire’s love for Halloween as she turns her home into an elaborate haunted house for trick or treaters. Mitchell goes to work dressed up as Spiderman with unexpected results, Cameron repeatedly tells a traumatic childhood story of why he is scared of Halloween. Meanwhile Gloria starts talking with an English accent. This episode marks the 30th episode overall. In the final Halloween episode, the audience sees Phil trying to scare Claire until he eventually succeeds. Alex and Luke both go through a break up and Gloria wins a Drag Queen contest. 3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Halloween (Season 1 Episode 6)

This episode starts an iconic Halloween tradition in the precinct between Jake and Captain Holt that continues throughout every season. Jake bets Holt he can steal his Medal of Valor from Holt’s locked office before midnight. His efforts are hilarious. Amy and Charles have to go undercover in costume much to her dismay and Terry discovers Rosa’s secret. Although this episode is not particularly scary, it is fun to watch these beloved characters celebrate Halloween. (See also Season 2 Episode 4, S3 E5, S4 E5, S5 E4, S6 E16)

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Halloween, Fear Itself, All the Way (Season 2 Episode 6, Season 4 Episode 4, Season 6 Episode 6)

Being the chosen one means Buffy fights off Vampires on a day-to-day basis alongside any other demon that decides to rise up over Sunnydale. Therefore, it’s no surprise that there are three Halloween episodes across the seven seasons. The first Halloween episode takes place when the gang are still in high school: the costume shop owner performs a spell that turns everyone who bought their costume from him into their characters, for example, Buffy loses her slaying powers and becomes a weak debutante in her pretty dress. The second episode is at a college haunted house frat party where everyone’s worst fears come to life and the third showcases Buffy’s role as a parent in her sister Dawn’s life. Regardless of Halloween, these three episodes are worth a rewatch as they show Buffy’s character development from high school student, college student and legal guardian.

5. The Vampire Diaries: Haunted, The Five (Season 1 Episode 7, Season 4 Episode 4)

 Mystic Falls is home to vampires, hybrids, doppelgangers, werewolves and witches: everyday is like Halloween. However, there are two specific episodes in the series to note: the first takes place at a Halloween dance at the high school. Vicki, Jeremy’s girlfriend, is a new vampire with an addictive personality but Stefan kills her because she  attacked Elena. Damon compels Jeremy to forget about Vicki. Stefan’s good guy personality and Damon’s bad boy persona are played against each other in both of these episodes and the rest of the series. In Season 4, Damon dressed as Jack the Ripper with Elena and Bonnie as his victims attend a Halloween frat party at Whitmore College. Damon helps Elena master her new bloodlust and she begins to feel things she shouldn’t. *blares feel so close by Calvin Harris* Meanwhile, Klaus acts as a puppeteer controlling Stefan and tortures Connor, a vampire hunter belonging to the group, The Five.

6. Pretty Little Liars: The First Secret, This is a Dark Ride, Grave New World. (Season 2 Episode 13, Season 3 Episode 13, Season 4 Episode 13)

Anonymous texts from a creepy stalker that knows way too much about you and your friends is enough to scare anyone on a regular day. Therefore, these Halloween specials are extra terrifying. It also cannot be a coincidence that each Halloween special falls on the thirteenth episode. This first episode is a prequel to the pilot. The Halloween before Ali goes missing, Alison and the girls get invited to Noel Kahn’s Halloween party until a worrying text from Alison causes the liars to leave and go to an abandoned house. The next episode unfolds on a terrifying ghost train with the girls dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, Daisy Buchanan, Marie Slim Browning and Barbarella with interference from A. The last Halloween episode takes place first in a graveyard, then underground tunnels which leads the girls to a creepy old mansion. The end of the episode confirms that Alison is alive and wants to come home to Rosewood.

7. One Tree Hill: An Attempt to Tip the Scales, Not Afraid (Season 3 Episode 4, Season 8 Episode 6). 

Tric is the perfect setting for Halloween in both of these episodes. In the first, a masquerade ball leads everyone to dress up as who they would like to be rather than who they are. For example, Hayley dresses up as Sandy from Grease. Stolen kisses, practical jokes and commitment issues are at the heart of this episode as Fall Out Boy perform. In the second one, although in their adult life, the gang enjoy an open mic night at Tric on Halloween with some funny costumes as Julian arrives as a Dalmatian with his mother as Cruella and Hayley comes as herself in high school; a pregnant cheerleader.

8. Ugly Betty: The Lyin, the Watch and the Wardrobe  (Season 1 Episode 5) 

The Suarez house is transformed with Halloween decorations by Ignacio. Betty arrives at Mode dressed as a butterfly for the costume contest only to learn that Marc only sent the email to her. She takes it in her stride and decides she has won. Marc finds a new way to make fun of Betty by dressing up as her. Henry, secretly dressed as Superman, grows closer to Betty, much to Walter’s dismay. Amanda tries to get her claws into Daniel by keeping his watch from their night together but Betty figures it out. Meanwhile, Daniel visits Claire in rehab and Wilhelmina’s wicked  witch personality thrives in this episode as she can’t fit into a designer gown and has been slandered for dating a younger man.

9. Sabrina the Teenage Witch: A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It (Season 2 Episode 31)

This tv show has many Halloween themed episodes to choose from due to the realm between living and the dead being at its weakest on All Hallows Eve. Also, it being Hilda and Zelda Spellman’s favourite holiday. Episode 31 shows an unexpected Halloween party being thrown at Sabrina’s enchanted house for all of her fellow, mortal students. Although she was the last to know, Sabrina decides to let the party go ahead. The arrival of talking furniture, Ghouls from the closet, termites, overflowing cauldrons, and an attention seeking, talking cat make this Halloween party one to remember. 10. How I Met Your Mother: The Slutty Pumpkin, The Slutty Pumpkin Returns (Season 1 Episode 6, Season 7 Episode 8)

Although there are three Halloween episodes in this series,  the first and the last are the ones to note because they are linked. The first Halloween episode of the series highlights Ted’s hopeless romantic personality trait as he goes to the party on the roof hoping he will meet this girl in a slutty pumpkin costume four years earlier. Marshall and Lily enter the costume contest as a parrot and a Captain Sparrow character at MacLaren’s and win with surprising results. Barney must change his costume multiple times as his pick up lines keep failing him. Robin doesn’t like to share which causes Mike to break up with her. The last Halloween episode is a continuation of the first as the title suggests, The Slutty Pumpkin Returns. Ted discovers the slutty pumpkin costume in a shop window and finds out the identity of the girl, Naomi (guest star Katie Holmes). They begin dating until they both agree they have no chemistry and break up. Barney’s worst nightmare comes through as Robin discovers he is one quarter Canadian. (See also Season 6 Episode 7)

11. New Girl: Halloween (Season 2 Episode 6)

 This Halloween episode marks the 20th episode in the series. Jess goes to work at a haunted house, dressed up as a zombie. She develops feelings for Dr Sam even though their relationship was meant to be just physical. Nick is stressed out because his college crush, Amelia, is coming to visit him. He also faces his fear of haunted houses with entertaining results. Schimdt tries to get close to Cece but realises she’s happy with Robby. Winston and Shelby fight about their costumes. 12. Desperate Housewives: Now I Know, Don’t be Scared (Season 4 Episode 6)

Halloween arrives on Wisteria Lane with consequences for all. Gaby continues her affair with Carlos while trying to break up with potential governor candidate Victor. Bree forbids Danielle from attending Bob and Lee’s Halloween party because she’s pregnant. In true Danielle fashion, she disobeys and her water breaks at the party. Lynette beats cancer but becomes obsessed with a possum in the garden. Edie’s biggest fear comes through as Carlos ends their relationship. Susan meets a living ghost, Mike’s father, who she thought was dead. Secrets past, present and future come to light on Halloween night. (See also Season 7 episode 6)

13. Sister, Sister: Halloween (Season 3 Episode 7)

In an effort to be different, both Tia and Tamera buy the most outrageous costume they can find only to end up dressed the same as each other. The twins borrow Roger’s brand new Mercedes convertible to drop their friends at a Halloween rave even though they are grounded. The girls end up at the Canada US border and on the late night news leading to a hilarious reaction from a furious Ray in his pink bunny costume.

14. Glee: Rocky Horror Glee Show (Season 2 Episode 5)

Music and holidays go hand in hand. McKinley’s high school Glee club pays tribute to the 1973 Rocky Horror Picture Show Musical. Carl and Emma attend a midnight screening of the film which prompts Will’s decision to make this the school play. Finn and Rachel are cast as the leads but Finn struggles with body image issues due to his role. With the play cancelled, Glee performed it for themselves. Seven cover songs are featured in this episode, ending with the Glee club singing Time Warp.

15. Stranger Things: Trick or Treat, Freak  (Season 2 Episode 2)

There is a clue in the title that ‘strange things’ are always happening in the town of Hawkins. Halloween is no different. The boys dress up as Ghostbusters paying homage to the film at that time while nobody else at school is in costume. That’s a nightmare in itself. The kids continue to fight monsters from the upside down in this spooky episode filled with 80’s references.

16. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody: The Ghost in Suite 613 (Season 1 Episode 19)

Since Stephen King’s The Shining and subsequent film version, hotels can have a creepy element with abandoned rooms, long corridors and basements. In this episode, The Tipton hotel is the perfect setting to discover a haunted room. After Muriel tells a ghost story about suite 613, Zack, Cody, London, Maddie and Esteban decide to spend the night. Esteban holds a séance, Arwin detects paranormal activity while the rest of the gang wait patiently to hear from ghost Irene.

17. Bones: Mummy in the Maze (Season 3 Episode 5)

Bones episodes mainly consist of finding human remains in a strange situation. This episode is like every other one with an added Halloween twist. At a Halloween hay maze, a mummified corpse was found by a lost kid. A second body shows up at Shoreline Amusement Park and Booth and Bones rescue another girl from becoming the third body. There’s a Halloween party for the Jeffersonian Institute which Cam insists everyone must go to because there will be sponsors in attendance. Booth is dressed up as a squint and Bones is Wonder Woman. What a team.

18. Teen Wolf: Illuminated  (Season 3 Episode 16)

Werewolves are the first supernatural species introduced to Beacon Hills although it is home to other mysterious beings. A power outage puts a curfew on the town, however, Danny and Ethan manage to throw a blacklight Halloween party in Derek’s empty loft. The mystery surrounding the hooded figures is still at large as Ethan and Lydia are attacked and marked in the same way Isaac was; with a reverse number 5 as the symbol. This is a good episode to watch before the upcoming film.

19. American Horror Story: Murder House (Season 1 Episode 4, 5)

Each episode of AHS is scary but the two part Halloween special highlights the fine line between the living and the dead: the ghosts of anyone who died in the murder house can finally leave on Halloween night. Five mangled teens from a school shooting haunt Tate to find out why he killed them while he’s on a date with Violet. After seeing an ultrasound of Vivien’s baby, the doctor collapses leading the audience to believe there is something seriously wrong. Ouija boards, the return of the rubber man, and the revelation that Constance is Tate’s mother sums up some of the action.

20. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: Hex and the Single Guy (Season 4 Episode 7)

Bel Air is bewitched on this scary holiday as the Banks’ family attend a séance with a spiritualist to help Hilary make contact with Trevor, her dead fiancé. Will’s scepticism leads to a hex being put on the whole family as they all experience bouts of bad luck. The next morning, Will wakes up thinking it was a bad nightmare until the day begins to repeat itself.  (See also Season 1 Episode 8,9)

21. Dawson’s Creek: Four Scary Stories (Season 5 Episode 9)

Joey, Jack, and Pacey return to Grams’ house unsatisfied after seeing a horror film. Joey suggests maybe she can’t be scared anymore which is music to Jack and Pacey’s ears as they play a prank on her. To prove she’s not as scared as they think, she tells them a frightening story that happened to her. The boys follow suit and in true Grams fashion, she joins in and tells the scariest story of all, Jennifer’s story. The episode flashbacks to the time of each of their stories. Jen takes over Charlie’s (Chad Michael Murray) radio station on Halloween night and horror ensues. Gram’s retelling leaves Jack, Joey, and Pacey terrified. 22. That’s So Raven: Don’t Have A Cow (Season 2 Episode 2)

Raven and Chelsea find an old spell book in grandma Viv’s old trunk. They perform a spell and wish for an invite to Alana’s Halloween party. After the first spell works, they perform another to have the best costumes. However, a mishap during the potion making causes them to start developing cow features. Raven didn’t see this coming as she’s got cow ears and Chelsea’s got a tail. They rush to the party to stop the spell before they turn into livestock. Meanwhile, Cory decides he’s old enough to go trick or treating with his friends rather than his parents.

23. Hannah Montana: Torn Between Two Hannahs (Season 1 Episode 17)

Deception and mistaken identities take over Malibu in this Halloween special. Robby Ray’s niece, Luann, who looks like Miley, comes to visit from Tennessee. At first, she fools everyone (except Miley) with her sweet and innocent act. She ties Miley up and leaves her in the closet then goes to a party dressed as Hannah with an unsuspecting Lola. Terrified she’s going to ruin her secret, Miley escapes and rushes to the party. The two Hannah’s get mixed up and it’s up to Lily and Oliver to determine who’s the real Miley. Meanwhile, Jackson and Bobby Ray are annoying their neighbours with their Halloween decorations. 

24. The Big Bang Theory: The Middle Earth Paradigm (Season 1 Episode 6)

Penny throws a Halloween costume party and invites the gang which is a test of their social skills. After The Flash costume disaster, they must change outfits: Leonard is Frodo, Raj is a Norse God Thor, Sheldon is The Doppler Effect and Howard is Robin Hood. Penny kisses Leonard for the first time. Although this Halloween episode is not scary, it is fun to watch. (See also S2 E6, S6 E5, S12 E6).

25. This is Us: The 20’s (Season 2 Episode 6)

Halloween is here and the Pearson family are back in this fun filled flashback episode. It shows the big three at aged ten and then again in their twenties. Jack and Rebecca take the kids trick or treating dressed as Sonny and Cher while Kate is Sandy from Grease, Kevin is a cigar-smoking bum and Randall is Michael Jackson. The big three struggle in their twenties: Beth and Randall are awaiting the birth of baby Tess not long after Randall’s nervous breakdown; Kate is working as a waitress and involved with a married man and Kevin attempts to steal an acting role from his roommate and friend. Miguel reaches out to Rebecca for the first time in years. There are no present day scenes as this episode offers an insightful journey into the past lives of Kate, Kevin and Randall on Halloween.

26. Supernatural: Family Remains (Season 4 Episode 11)

Having already discussed the Salvatore brothers, it’s time to talk about the Winchester brothers: monster hunting duo Dean and Sam. In this episode, they investigate the appearance of a ghost girl after a man called Bill Gibson was murdered in a locked room in an abandoned house. His wife died in childbirth, and his daughter hung herself in this attic. The boys try to warn the Carter family who are going to move into the house but they don’t pay any attention until their son, Danny,  is kidnapped through the walls. Disturbing facts about the Gibson family makes this a horrifying episode.

27. Once Upon A Time: The Doctor (Season 2 Episode 5)

Storybrooke becomes home to a new monster, Frankenstein, otherwise known as Dr Whale, in this episode. Frankenstein is the first character to appear from literature that is not for children. The scene in the lab is a reference to the 1931 film, Frankenstein. In the present day, Dr Whale wants Regina’s help in bringing his brother back but she refuses because she’s trying not to use magic for Henry’s sake. Dr Whale revives Regina’s first love Daniel Colter by giving him an enchanted heart with disastrous results. Torn Limbs, hearts inserted and removed and an ogre massacre is just a  part of the action in this episode.

28. 13 Reasons Why: Tape 2 Side B (Season 1 Episode 4)

The ghost of Hannah haunts every episode of this show as the audience are brought through her thought process before her death. This episode takes place on Halloween. It focuses on the character Tyler Down who is on the fourth tape which documents the reasons Hannah committed suicide. He was stalking Hannah and taking unwanted pictures of her. He took a picture of her and Courtney Crimsen kissing and showed everyone at school which ended the girls’ friendship. Clay helps to clean the outside of Hannah’s house as it has been toilet papered and chats with her mom. He delivers his own form of revenge by sending a naked picture of Tyler to the whole school.

29. Heartland: The Haunting of Hanley Barn (Season 3 Episode 4)

Hooded figures, thunder crashing and a power cut make this episode a spooky one. Hudson’s favourite ghost story takes place at Hanley barn. Mr Hanley’s horses are being spooked at night by the supposed ghost that’s been haunting the place. During a thunderstorm, Ty and Amy spend the night keeping an eye on the horses while Caleb, Soraya and Ashley try to frighten them. A tragic love story from years ago comes to light at the end.

30. That 70’s Show: Too Old to Trick or Treat, Too Young to Die (Season 3 Episode 4)

Hitchcock’s horror influence infiltrates Point Place Wisconsin as the gang fall victim to different comic spoofs from the films.  Laurie attacks Kelso in the shower while her red shampoo goes down the drain. Fez thinks Bob killed Midge and disposed of her body. Eric has vertigo after falling from the garage roof and Kitty is left in charge of birds which does not end well. (See also Season 2 Episode 5)

31. Dynasty : Wild Ghost Chase (Season 3 Episode 3)

The Carringtons have a flair for the dramatics and this Halloween spectacle lives up to their reputation. What better way to celebrate the scary season than with a party at the manor. Fallon is dressed as Marie Antoinette and Adam is Louis XVI and ironically they both end up in Halloween cake following their fight. After his sister’s body is found in the Carrington Lake a few episodes back, Evan destroys Fallon’s garden which is part of her community service to try and ensure she goes to jail but later apologises.

Based on the bestselling novel written by Jay Asher, 13 Reasons Why tells the story of why teenaged Hannah Baker took her own life and the events which follow her death, diving into the lives of multiple characters across four epic and emotional seasons. Whilst the show may have aired its fourth and final season, us dedicated fans aren’t ready to let go of this insightful drama-mystery series. We round up 10 emotional moments, both heartwarming and heartbreaking, that occurred over the four seasons.

Please be advised that spoilers will feature in this article along with mentions of potentially triggering events such as self-harm, shootings, suicide, rape, and death.

1. The Night We Met (Season 1)

‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron is the designated song for the slow dance that makes up what has to be one of the sweetest scenes throughout the entirety of the show! As the chaotic crowd of headbanging teens at the Winter Formal settles to couples swaying slowly to this sorrowful song, the awkward moment which Clay and Hannah share before dancing together is completely relatable to teenage life and romantic scenarios. When they finally do begin to dance, the atmosphere is tense in all the right ways, the connection between these two characters as well as the chemistry is so painfully obvious that you can’t help but shout at the screen for Clay to make a move and kiss Hannah right there on the dancefloor.

2. The Death Of Justin Foley (Season 4)

Whether you expected it or not, perhaps one of the most heartbreaking scenes came in the finale of 13 Reasons Why’s very last season. . . The death of Justin Foley. After a long battle against drugs, abuse, and being homeless before being adopted by the Jensens and working to turn his life around, Justin’s health takes a turn for the worst and he collapses at prom only to be hospitalised. He is then diagnosed as HIV positive, which progresses to AIDS and acts as his cause of death due to AIDS-related pneumonia and fungal meningitis. The death left many fans furious and heartbroken, what with it being all the more bitter thanks to Justin’s sympathetic story and the efforts to turn his life around, only to have his potentially promising future ripped away from him.

3. The Making Of Tape 14 (Season 1)

Perhaps one of the most tension-filled scenes in the show is when Clay makes the decision to confront Bryce Walker in his own home. After the continuous pressing from Clay about how Bryce raped Hannah, Bryce proceeds to beat up Clay before offering the other an ice-pack and drink. As the two sit together in the following scene, Clay receives the closest to a confession and anyone is likely to get and it is later revealed that Clay cleverly was recording the entire interaction. This tape recording of Bryce’s confession then becomes tape 14, an addition to the 13 tapes left behind by the late Hannah Baker who was one of Bryce’s rape victims.

4. Hannah Baker’s Suicide (Season 1)

It’s every parents expectation that their children outlive them and every parents nightmare that that may not be the case. When 13 Reasons Why begins, Hannah Baker had already taken her own life, however. as Clay listens to the tapes left by Hannah telling of the reasons why there was no question in that it would all lead up to the moment eventually being shown. What is even more emotional than Hannah Baker’s suicide is when her parents find her. . . Her mother’s denial at what has happened and insistence that she is okay combined with her father’s panic makes for one of the most difficult to watch scenes in the show’s first season. 

5. Clay Jensen’s Lockdown Breakdown (Season 4)

Ever since Clay Jensen began hallucinating his deceased friend and love interest, Hannah Baker, fans have speculated on and questioned the state of his mental health. Finally, in the fourth and final season, Clay’s state of mind becomes a major focus in the show’s storyline. After hallucinations of Monty and Bryce and the school staging a shooting in a feeble attempt to prepare its students for the likelihood of the drill becoming a reality, Clay finally loses it. This mental breakdown which he has in front of the adults and fellow teens sees Clay behaving erratically and even grabbing hold of one of the guns, asking if having a gun makes him any safer. He is then tackled by one of the team and we next see him having been admitted to a psychiatric ward.

6. “I’m A Survivor” Assembly (Season 3)

Sexual abuse and rape are two of the typically taboo topics which 13 Reasons Why refuses to shy away from and one of the most impactful scenes within the show is this assembly scene in season 3 which sees survivors coming together and taking the chance to literally stand up and announce that they are survivors. It’s a sincerely eye-opening moment in the show as it goes to show just how you never know who and how many people have been affected by such a horrific event, and some of those who make a stand in this episode shocked viewers with their unexpected announcement.

7. Bryce Walker Is Murdered (Season 3)

From season 1, the majority of the fans who watched 13 Reasons Why yearned for rapist Bryce Walker to get his comeuppance and in season 3, he did. What was surprising though is that not only did this bring to the show a new mystery as fans speculated on who the murderer was and waited for it to be revealed, but some were also… conflicted. Before his death, Bryce seemed to be trying to make amends and turn his life around, aiming to become a better person and following his death we were left with not only the question of who killed him but also if, given the opportunity, would he have been able to fully change and should he have been allowed to live for that possibility to come to?

8. Charlie St. George’s Promposal(s) (Season 4)

In a show like 13 Reasons Why where the primary topics of the storyline revolve around suicide, rape, murder, and many of the harsh realities to life, it’s difficult to remember that the characters we see on screen are still just teenagers. In season 4, one of the more lighthearted and comedic moments centre around Charlie St. George and his attempts to ask Alex Standall to the prom. His attempts include banners across the corridor walls, a classroom filled with students wearing masks of Charlie’s face holding a ‘Prom?’ sign and this romantic scene of fake candles and fairy lights.

9. Justin Foley’s Essay (Season 4)

If Justin’s death didn’t have you in tears, then this scene most definitely will. Having cleared out Justin’s lockers in school, Clay comes across Justin’s college essay which just so happens to be written about him. Thanks to Clay’s vivid imagination, he is still able to see Justin as he was able to see Hannah, Bryce, and Monty and he sits across from the other in their room as he reads out the essay that just so happens to be about him. Justin’s college essay acts as a letter allowing Clay and viewers an insight into his mind and how he feels toward Clay who we have watched grow from an enemy to a friend to a brother to Justin throughout the course of the show’s four seasons.

10. Spring Fling Shooting (Season 2)

One thing that 13 Reasons Why is both praised and criticised for as a show is its daring nature to focus on taboo subjects that many try to avoid acknowledging the existence of. In season 2, following a rather graphic sexual abuse scene, Tyler Down shows up at the school during the Spring Fling dance armed with multiple guns and the intent of carrying out a school shooting. Despite how he is stopped from proceeding with his plans by Clay, this close call is chilling to watch and made especially emotional as viewers battle with conflicting emotions of terror as the show edges closer to the sensitive topic of a school shooting and the sympathy felt for Tyler as a character given what he has been through.

The other week one of our contributors presented a more positive look on 13 Reasons Why, whereas this article has more of an opposing view.

On May 19th, the second season of 13 Reasons Why dropped on Netflix. After not being a fan of the first season, and having read the book written by Jay Asher, I just had to see what the second season was all about…and I have to say, I was quite disappointed, mad, annoyed, irritated, and just in awe of the acting, storyline, and the “ending”.

A novel that started off a discussion regarding bullying and possible mental illness regarding teenagers was then turned into a show of revenge and vindication. It’s hard to say too much in fear of offending someone, or triggering anyone based on his or her own experiences. However, the beauty of pop culture is that movies, shows, and literature are meant for discussion, interpretation, and critique, and that is exactly what I am about to do.

Here are just a couple of reasons why this show is problematic, and just plain bad. Be warned, there are spoilers ahead and potential triggers.

Synopsis

The second season of 13 Reasons Why focuses on the trial between Hannah’s mother, Olivia Baker, and the school. Mrs. Baker wants the school to be held responsible for Hannah’s death—claiming that her daughter reached out for help in multiple ways to the school, and nobody did anything to help her. As each episode progressed, different characters were asked to take the stand and tell their version of the story including their interactions with Hannah Baker before she died.

Watching the trial was infuriating with seeing the kids in season 1 finally understand by the end of the season what bullying can do to a person and how much they wanted to end it, and can change the way the school and the teens act on a daily basis. Then comes along season 2, and each character that goes on trial except for Clay and Tony. They lie on the stand, keep secrets, and still after everything they have all been through, including having a peer commit suicide over bullying, choose to not speak up and get justice for Hannah.

A show that has a huge opportunity to make a difference and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, instead focuses on spinning drama for good television and having their main theme as revenge.

Hannah Baker

A tragic character mixed in with bullying, peer pressure, and just the overall stress of trying to make friends in a new high school. I get it. It’s tough being a teen in a new school, we’ve all been there. She struggles to maintain her image throughout the show, while battling the gossip, rumours and bullying throughout the show. Was Hannah Baker depressed? Anxious? To me, it was pretty unclear. What was clear is the fact boys and girls bullied her, spread rumours, slut shamed, and even worse, raped. Hannah Baker was constantly focused on being accepted among her peers (aren’t we all?), but what I found irritating was her constant need to put herself in bad situations, regardless of what she experienced beforehand. After her first awful experience with Justin, she still drew herself to that group of people. Whether it was Marcus, or Zach, she continued to surround herself with them. No, that isn’t victim blaming, it’s just the truth.

Interestingly enough, Ryan Shaver played by Tommy Dorfman spoke the truest, most real words in the entire show in season 2. While being on the stand for the trial, Ryan Shaver recounts his conversation with Hannah Baker before she died. Sitting together on Hannah’s bedroom floor, Hannah confides in Ryan about her feelings for Justin even after he sent a photo of her around…and Ryan says, “You’ve put your hand on a stove, owie! You learned your lesson.”

This one line spoken by a character that sees through the fakeness of people tells Hannah she has been hurt before by this guy, and should have learned her lesson. And honestly? This quote reigns true throughout the rest of Hannah’s life. Even after Justin, Zach and even Marcus, she decides it’s a good idea to attend a party at Bryce’s house and get into a hot tub with him. Again, this isn’t victim blaming. I am genuinely wondering why you would still hang around these awful people after being hurt and burned by three of them already. It doesn’t make sense to me, and it doesn’t even set a good example, or a good conversation surrounding bullying, or even assault.

Jessica Davis

Another character mixed up in the world of bullying, slut shaming, and the repercussions of a traumatic rape from someone she once considered a friend. Throughout the second season, Jessica is clearly dealing with PTSD, guilt from Hannah’s death, and an inner turmoil on whether or not she should speak up about what Bryce did to her when she goes on the stand for the trial. Instead, she pretends she doesn’t remember who raped her, and wants to keep it that way. Honestly, I understand this. I can’t imagine what that must feel like, to go through everyday and seeing your attacker in school, still being loved by many people, and having the pressure of speaking up. But , this show should be about justice, no? Or is it going to continue on the trend of revenge and drama?

Jessica’s story line was the perfect opportunity for writers, producers, and even the mental health advocates that were involved in the making of season 2 to show girls that have been raped, or assaulted that it is okay to speak up, and that justice can prevail. Well, thank goodness by the end of the season she finally decides to speak on the stand and admit that Bryce is a rapist and that he has done it to her, Hannah, and who knows how many girls. At this point, this is when the watcher gets up and screams YES! JUSTICE! This is how a situation like this should be handled! Silence no more!

But instead, months down the line, Bryce is seen as innocent, and sentenced to three months probation.

Hear me out, yes this does happen in real life. Yes, it’s sad to see that rapists in high school who have a chance at being an athlete in college have a greater chance of being let go of a rape crime. Yes, victims don’t get justice. But this show had the opportunity to make the wrong things RIGHT. It had the opportunity to get Bryce in jail, show kids and even adults that this is what justice is. Not that rich, white athletes in high school can go around raping girls and receive little to no punishment. With the entire build up throughout the season, this was so incredibly disappointing to hear the verdict. I understand it could be to mimic real life situations, but how about using that platform to show what needs to be done instead?

Not only was this whole trial so irritating to watch when Jessica was involved, but it was cringe worthy watching Jessica and Alex get close and not for the reasons you think. After all of the bullying, the cheating, and the assaults, it’s great to see that two very broken and hurt characters find solace in one another. Justin magically disappeared from Jessica’s life, leaving her alone and scared. Then comes Alex to save the day. After Hannah’s funeral, Jessica and Alex go to the Spring dance together, and kiss, but as this is going on…Jessica longingly stares at Justin, who becomes Clay’s new adopted brother which I actually really liked. Here I am thinking, “Jessica, just don’t do it.” What does she do? She meets Justin outside in some creepy little alleyway and they hook up. After everything that happened to each character in this show, Jessica has the nerve to cheat on Alex. It’s just mind-boggling to me, and shows once again focuses on drama and revenge—revenge that will clearly happen once Alex finds about Jessica and Justin.

Justin Foley

Justin is probably one of my favourite characters (if I even really have any). Coming from a broken home and an absent mother, Justin struggled to be accepted by the jocks and made some pretty bad decisions. At the beginning of season 2, Justin isn’t even in the episodes at all. He’s mentioned a few times, but that’s it until we learn he was living on the streets for 6 months and sending postcards to Jessica? How is a 17-year-old kid able to just disappear for six months without the school noticing or anybody speaking up for him? That is, until Clay decides to find him and ends up finding him on the streets in Ohio and addicted to heroin. I mean, I don’t know if it’s just lazy writing, but it seems like Justin couldn’t fit in the beginning of the season, and they just forgot about him, then remembered he should come back. And let’s just not address the fact he was homeless and missing for six months from school, it’s fine.

Tyler Down

Last but not least…Tyler Down. A troubled, lonely, misunderstood teen who desperately just wants friends, and a place where he can feel safe. Honestly, his character made me sad. Sure, in season 1 he took photos of girls, specifically Hannah Baker without permission, but every character on that show has done something horrible. And even after the tapes got out, Tyler was still seen as a loser that nobody wanted to associate with. So much for no more bullying, right? Tyler finds himself befriending Cyrus, a hard-core, punk, anarchy lover. As their friendship blossoms, Tyler begins hating his school even more, loving metal music, and believing in complete and total anarchy. As Tyler’s character continues to get darker, and he begins loving guns more and more, Cyrus gets a little bit too scared and unfortunately their friendship is over. Tyler gets into a dark place mentally, but his parents notice and he is sent to a program where he spends his time outdoors and learns to control his anger. A few months later, near the end of the season, Tyler comes back to school, and he seems…happy! He seems in-tune with himself, and learned to control his reaction to certain situations.

After Bryce’s verdict, Bryce’s creepy, violent friend, Montgomery De La Cruz, is fixated on starting up more drama and super pissed off that Tyler came to the school. La Cruz finds Tyler in the bathroom, and the actions that followed shortly after are horrific, and upsetting. I actually had tears in my eyes while watching, and thinking this is completely unnecessary for television, or is it? What side are you on?

I honestly can’t find the words for this scene… as a society, we are conditioned to be “used” to scenes where girls and women get raped and assaulted in movies or TVs, but we rarely see a teenage boy get raped…especially the way Tyler did.

I don’t know if the show is just trying to have some type of shock factor, to have the viewer continue watching when season 3 rolls around…or if they genuinely want to show that even boys and men get raped. Regardless, after everything that has happened in this show in its two seasons, I think this has gone way too far, and actually creates some negative, and even dangerous perceptions in a viewers’ mind.

Ending

With the horrific scene involving Tyler and La Cruz, Tyler’s anger comes back and he decides he will grab his guns, go to the Spring dance, and shoot up the school. Before that, Tyler sent a text to his ex-girlfriend telling her to watch out because he’s on his way to shoot up the school? I don’t really know, because the text message was never shown. Tyler shows up in his car, dressed in all black, takes out this massive rifle, and Clay Jensen is standing outside trying to convince Tyler not to shoot up the school. After about five minutes of convincing, Clay says the words, “I don’t want you to die.” This line, these words, stick with Tyler, and makes him feel wanted and loved. Could this be an allusion to what should’ve been said to Hannah in her cry for help? We will never know, but it sure seems that way.

So, Tyler gets into the car with Tony, and Clay is left standing there with a rifle in his hands when the cops show up, and boom, the season ends.

A show that truly, truly, glorifies so many concerning themes, glorifies revenge, and honestly is all for the drama and shock factor.

I hope this allows you to think critically of the show, and have discussions with your peers about bullying, violence, and mental health in a healthy, productive way. Because…this show does not.

Hey, it’s Hannah, Hannah Baker. That’s right. Don’t adjust your… whatever device you’re listening to this on. It’s me, live and in stereo. No return engagements, no encore. And this time absolutely no requests. Get a snack. Settle in. ‘Cause I’m about to tell you the story of my life.

This is how season 1 of the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why starts off. Since it was release in 2017, many people have talked about this show with discussions primarily focusing on the triggers in the show and how it would encourage others to follow in Hannah’s example. While we all can hopefully agree on the fact that suicide and self harm should not be seen as a solution for any problems, there are many things we can learn from the series itself.

Jay Asher published this novel  in 2007 and it certainly has been a standout novel for him. Soon after I stumbled upon this book, I was shocked as after all, it was a young adult book. That being said, it could be possible that this show could be part of the school education plan. Why you say? Since we are now living in a time where people should start talking about how they feel and if their minds begin to drift into a dark corner of their minds or in search for help if they cannot deal with them on their own. We must find the courage to speak up and show bullies the consequences of their actions.

In the first season of the series as well as the book, the story explores Hannah Baker who commits suicide after being bullied for a long time. Before she dies, she records 13 tapes each with a reason why that led her to do what she did.

The group of tapes are overseen by Tony Padilla who found them on his doorstep one day and he is tasked with passing on the tapes to everyone who is mentioned on them with each tape focusing on one person in her life that helped to push her over the edge.

1. Justin Foley who took an inappropriate picture of her and let Bryce send it around school.
2. Jessica Davis who starts dating Alex and leaves her feeling like the third wheel.
3. Alex Standall who ends their friendship because of Jessica and writes Hannah’s name on the “not hot” list.
4. Tyler Down who stalked her and took inappropriate pictures of her.
5. Courtney Crimsen for hiding her sexuality and says Hannah is easy to have.
6. Marcus Cole who tries to sexually assault her because of a bet.
7. Zach Dempsey for stealing positive notes and only leaving the negative ones.
8. Ryan Shaver for publishing her personal poem in the school paper.
9. Justin Foley again because he let Bryce rape Jessica while she was passed out from drinking.
10. Sheri Holland for knocking down the stop sign which lead to the death of another student.
11. Clay Jensen the nice boy she wished would ask her once more how she really felt and not have to give him hints to do so.
12. Bryce Walker who raped her.
13. Kevin Porter the guidance counsellor who was her last cry for help.

It seems possible that one misinterpretation can change your life and how people see you forever. She was there for her friends and not scared to take a stand, but when she needed them the most, they left her alone in a spotlight she never asked for.

I wanted people to trust me, despite anything they’d heard. And more than that, I wanted them to know me. Not the stuff they thought they knew about me. No, the real me. I wanted them to get past the rumours.

While the tapes were an essential part of season one, the follow-up season saw Polaroid’s replacing them this time around. They show that there is a lot more going on at Liberty High than everyone could imagine.

Season 2 follows everyone mentioned on the tapes with each of them preparing to testify in court as Hannah’s mother is suing the school for not doing something against bullying and for not helping her daughter when she needed it.. Every episode focuses on one person and their true relationship with Hannah, who appears in flashbacks as well as Clay’s hallucinations. The season picks up six months after Hannah’s death and it seems Clay has suffered the most  with her death and starts ‘talking’ to her so he can understand her actions. In the end because he loves her, he has to let her go.

During the trial you get to know a different side of Hannah with various questions asked: who was Hannah? Did she provoke everything that happened to her? Did she call the people and actions by their names?

One of the most shocking episodes for me was when Zach gave his testimony, which was shocking because I did not expect to see another side of him—a side that cared for Hannah. It was sad to know how he felt and that he let her down because he was worried about what would the others say about their friendship.

The adults are put under the spotlight in this season as well and it shows two examples of a trustworthy and untrustworthy person.

Clay is called to Principal Gary Bolan’s office, who seems to be annoyed by the trial and asks Clay to stay quiet after the tapes were released online for everyone to listen to. Bolan is afraid that people would call her an example for every bad thing that happens in schools and put a bad light on Liberty High. Sadly, Bolan never listened to a single tape.

And then there is Kevin Porter, Liberty High’s ‘guidance counsellor’. Eaten up by his own guilt, he has to admit he could have done so much more. In Episode 9, Mr Porter has to testify and what he says is honest and full of guilt while also talking about everything that is wrong in our world and how it should change. His speech is focused on teenagers, but can also be applicable to almost every person.

“My name is Kevin Porter. I’m a guidance counsellor at Liberty High School. I would say I help as many kids as I can. That’s why I got into education. But I don’t get to see every kid. I try to keep an eye out, but you have to count on kids to come to you. And not every kid who does come to you is able to ask for the help they need. Not every kid tells you the whole truth.

I can’t go back and fix my mistake. I can’t change the past.”

As Mr. Porter says, we need change. Society, the law, and so on because people have to change, now more than ever as we are confronted with hate and bullying every day. Every single one of us, one way or another. In person, through the news, on social media, and so forth.

A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.

So what can we expect to see? A big part of the second season will be the trial with Hannah’s parents going up against the high school and many of the kids will be asked to testify, including Jessica. However, those who plan on testifying are receiving threats and warnings about what will happen to them if they reveal secrets.

The first season of 13 Reasons Why received a lot of criticism, with mental health and suicide prevention groups stating that the show managed to break many of the accepted rules for portraying suicide on-screen — such as featuring a graphic, prolonged scene of the main character’s death and showing the suicide as a force for positive change and catharsis in the narrative.

Creator Brian Yorkey talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the themes to be explored in Season 2.

“Recovery is a central theme for us,” he said. “So many of these kids had been through traumatic experiences, both due to Hannah’s death and also independent of that and just as a part of their lives, and we wanted to begin to see them start back on the road toward wellness and wholeness and see what that looks like in the sense that recovery is not a straight line, and it’s not a simple process. That’s a central theme of the season.”

Last week we received the announcement that the season would hit Netflix on May 18th, and now today, Netflix has released the official trailer for the second season of 13 Reasons Why and it reveals an intense mystery surrounding Polaroids.

Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of Hannah’s death and the start of our characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery. Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah’s death concealed. A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.

Judging by the trailer, it seems the series will be heading in a darker direction and will hopefully answer several questions we all had at the end of season one: How will Jessica heal in the aftermath of her assault? Will Bryce be brought to justice? How will Clay move on from the devastating loss of Hannah? What happened to Alex? What choices will Tyler make in the face of his social isolation?

The trailer song says it all with lyrics like “How far does the dark go?”, especially when Clay finds the first Polaroid stating that “Hannah wasn’t the only one”. Speaking of Hannah, despite Katherine Langford’s character being dead, it seems the memory of her will haunt Clay and possibly even guide and aiding him to find the truth about this latest mystery.

The series is premiering at the perfect time as the book is celebrating 10 years since its first publication. A 10th anniversary edition of Thirteen Reasons Why was released in December last year, which features exclusive content including an alternate ending, notes and deleted scenes. Another version of the book has also been released to tie-in with the upcoming series. The Netflix tie-in edition features a 16-page full-colour photo insert displaying scenes from the show, and interviews with the cast and crew.

In January, we received the first teaser for the series, which featured brief snippets of each of the character’s. In this full-length trailer, we see much more of the cast in action.

The story centers around Hannah Baker, a teenager who committed suicide and leaves behind a series of recordings explaining the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. These recordings are found by a fellow classmate, Clay Jensen, who learns about Hannah’s pain, and also discovers he is one of the reasons why.

The series is premiering at the perfect time as the book is celebrating 10 years since its release. A 10th anniversary edition of Thirteen Reasons Why was released in December last year which features exclusive content including an alternate ending, notes and deleted scenes. Another version of the book is scheduled for release next week to tie-in with the upcoming series. The TV tie-in edition features a 16-page full-colour photo insert displaying scenes from the show, and interviews with the cast and crew.

13 Reasons Why stars Katherine Langford, Dylan Minnette and Alisha Boe. The series hits Netflix on March 31st.
