Our next movie-bucket-list-poster film is what many movie buffs consider a classic, but does some humour have an expiration date? Let’s run to our gate and catch a flight on the 1980’s film Airplane!

Now before we take flight on this hilarious movie, with a pretty well stocked cast if I do say so myself, let’s chat about the movie’s rating.

I’m more than positive this has probably been commented on since the movie’s take off in 1980. Maybe PG slid by in the 80s, this film today would be barely skidding past PG-13 and more likely be landed in a rated R setting due to its sexual content, and let’s not forget (spoiler alert) the alarmingly surprising graphic nudity just randomly placed in the movie.

In all honesty, I am not a fan of nudity in movies. I don’t think it’s necessary or adds any concreteness to the plot, and in this case, it is definitely just an extremely crude joke for an older audience – certainly not a PG crowd. Also branching off that, some of the humour and jokes displayed in Airplane! are a little stuck in their time, and not appropriate now as it was over looked then. Not only with its crudeness and inappropriately sexual bits, but it also has some jokes that flirt with the border of acceptable and racist.

But, there isn’t all bad to this classic, I enjoyed quite a lot of it! There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, timeless quotes, and I’m sure you’d have to watch the movie more than once to catch all its clever puns. With this movies witty and fast-paced humour, groovy music, goofy sound effects, and cheesy violence, it’s no wonder so many consider this a classic comedy.

Now here’s the tough part, and partially why I took so long to write this article: the final score. Though with all its positives and hilarious moments, I just can’t get passed those striking moments, it really put a damper on my experience of watching this. Of course, some out there may totally disagree (which of course is fine) and some may be relieved to read this, but before we score, let’s highlight some golden parts:

And now, with great anticipation I give this film 5 pilot’s wings out of 10. As I said above, I really love the fast pace comedy and all the puns, but there were large elements of inappropriateness I just couldn’t over look. And to our left you can find our scratch off movie poster image!

The recipe for Airplane! is: Bell bottom pants, lots of little free flowers, one blowup auto pilot, airplane tickets, neckties, and but of course fish diner.

If you’re interested in getting this poster for yourself or another fellow movie lover you can find it on Amazon!

Written by Briah Krueger

This 2007 film is not your Grandpa’s typical Western, actually it’s not a typical anything. Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel and brought to life by acclaimed directors Ethan and Joel Coen, our next stop on the 100 Movie Bucket List is No Country for Old Men.

The Coen brothers made quite a film from this novel, with its well-fitting and talented cast, a storyline that eagerly holds your attention, and capturing the horror of a villain that dare I say is made strictly of nightmare material. But we’ll get to all that fun stuff in just a moment. This film opens with beautifully captivating landscapes and a soothing story-teller voiceover from none other than Tommy Lee Jones, who portrays the Sheriff in the film.

The camera work is so crisp and unique, at times you almost feel like you’re there and get lost in the oasis of the scenery. Or if you’re in one of the many uncanny suspense filled scenes, you may find yourself surged with panic and sympathy for our main heroic characters.

The story follows an unexpected discovery of 2 million dollars from our main character Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) in Texas, around the 80s. Before finding the money, he comes across the outcome of drug violence in the middle of the desert with several dead men and then finds the trail to the 2 million dollars.

And to follow his tracks to retrieve the money and destroy most anything in his path is the notoriously evil hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem). Now I don’t use the word evil (at least not seriously) often, at times I think it can sound a bit cliché, but our villain in this movie Chigurh is nothing short of it. His calm and unpredictable behaviour makes your skin crawl with uneasiness, as he quickly reveals with his actions how ruthless and relentless he is.

He’s honestly one of the purest evil villains’ stories and films have brought to life; there’s no soul in his eyes and not a trace of humanity in his alarmingly deep and rattled voice.

Every supporting actor in this film (Honorable mentions: Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt) brings this story of mystery and uncertainty even more to life with their very well portrayed characters and of course those Texan accents. Our main characters show fearlessness, bravery, and some cunning brief comedy relief at times.

Though I haven’t read the book, I would hope and believe that the Coen brothers did it justice with winning four Academy Awards. Including: Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Attaboy Javier Bardem!), Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Writing Adapted Screenplay. (Thank you IMDB!). This film is original and just the right amount of chilling that you still enjoy the film and are invested in its ending. Though, I won’t lie to you, you won’t like the ending.

I would most certainly, and plan to, watch No Country for Old Men again and though I am no movie-buff-judge, I would say this is an instant classic for you thriller fans. There are two things in this movie that held me back in my score giving, I won’t reveal them for spoiler alert reasons, but those two things didn’t stop me from giving this film an 8.5 out of 10. No Country for Old Men is truly a powerful and enchantingly violent movie experience you should definitely give a shot (no pun intended).

Next stop on the 100 Movie Bucket List express is arguably one of Quentin Tarantino’s best films; ladies and gents get ready to twist for the 1994 cult classic Pulp Fiction.

A small disclosure before we begin, this movie is rated R and contains heavy language, drug content, and graphic scenes. Alright, now let’s party on!

This movie lived up to its hype and “movie street cred” with its matchless storyline and Tarantino’s classic touch on the cinematic world. You can spot a Tarantino movie within the first few minutes; he loves playing with plots and tossing in charismatic stories that may not impact the plot itself greatly, but we as an audience greatly appreciate it.

Pulp Fiction follows the story of several characters; the whole movie itself consists of overlapping stories all intertwining together to make a one-of-a-kind movie experience featuring snappy and clean camera work, a timeless soundtrack, and classic 90s charm.

The film fades in with the definition of the word Pulp, which I thought was clever and intriguing. And to ease your curious minds here it is:

Pulp/’pelp/ n. 1. A soft, moist, shapeless mass of matter.

A magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper.

American Heritage Dictionary

New College Edition

Now that we have our short literary lesson out of the way, back to the eccentric world of Tarantino.

The stories entangled together in this film are mainly from three characters: Vincent Vega (John Travolta), Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson), and Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis). Travolta and Jackson’s characters are the diamonds of the show, portraying two hitmen working for a successful man by the name of Marsellus (Ving Rhames). And Willis plays a Boxer who gets himself into a world of trouble after disregarding an order made by Rhames.

Though the stories aren’t in order, everything is tied up in a nice little bow by the end of the film, leaving you wanting more of this spectacular world. The suspense and intrigued nature of the film is held onto throughout each scene and every line of dialogue. The script itself is brilliant, it could stand alone without the video and still be absolutely amazing; but Tarantino gives us an intense and excellent cast to bring it to its outstanding and violent life. A collection of superb cast members powers this film, delivering us with immediately liked and fascinating characters. (Some honourable mentions: Uma Thurman and Christopher Walken). Tarantino also has a small role in arguably one of the funniest and best scenes in Pulp Fiction.

Now, onto the scoring. I actually watched this movie twice with a bit of time in between each viewing. I sincerely enjoyed it the first time I watched it, but the second time I truly fell in love with the movie and its witty banter, and hilariously catchy dialogue. This movie is like no other, all in all Tarantino is a master story teller and deliverer of adrenaline. With that said, Pulp Fiction earns 9 bullets out of 10.

Written by Briah Krueger

Here we are movie junkies, we’ve hit the Tarantino express! This film, and our next one, we’ll be plunging into Quentin Tarantino’s violent and cunning world of cinema. And we’re kicking it off with one of his earliest films, the instant 1992 hit Reservoir Dogs.

I was quite impressed with the movie itself, but even more so when I found out that this was one of his first big films. This story is incredibly unique and crafted with such cleverness there’s no way you wouldn’t be captivated into this crafty world he’s brought to us.

Reservoir Dogs is a story about six guys who are complete strangers; each given an assigned colour as a code name – Mr. White, Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Blue, and Mr. Brown. (Fun fact: Quentin Tarantino often makes brief appearances in his films; he’s Mr. Brown!)

They are directed to not tell anyone their real names or where they’re from. They’re also each given job to pull off a robbery. But, the robbery doesn’t go over smoothly, and that is our big question throughout the movie: what happened? Most of the movie takes place in a warehouse where the characters argue and try to figure out what went wrong and who’s still alive.

With a charming and charismatic cast, the acting in this film is so well done you can feel the characters pain, panic, and frustration. I was especially blown away by Steve Buscemi’s performance as Mr. Pink. He gave us such a fantastic portrayal of his character, and truly made you believe in the story. This film’s dialogue is witty, full of bantering, quick, and it’s smart (a common trait for Tarantino films).

Tarantino is a maker of violent masterpieces. It isn’t senseless violence (most of the time) though, it has an intelligence attached to it. Each act has a purpose and enhancement to the plot. He pushes the boundaries of violence in movies to make you feel empathy and some kind of connection to the characters he’s created. He drenched this movie with dramatic and intimate camera shots/transitions, blasted it with memorable and catchy music, and sprinkled in plot twists that will sneak up on you and blow your mind.

The very format of this plot is genius, Tarantino is known for his signature touch of layers, timelines, stories within stories, and flashbacks (and we love him for it). He also always delivers with a great soundtrack, which is a big plus. A soundtrack can often make or break a film.

There’s no doubt this is one of his best films, it is certainly more than worth the watch and I would love to watch it again. With everything above said, with great consideration, this movie has received an 8 out of 10.

A few things held me back from giving this film a 9. Not to say this movie isn’t amazing, I would highly recommend it if you’d like to explore Tarantino films or if you’re an action movie kind of person. There were two factors that made me give this movie an 8.

I almost felt like the movie should have been longer. It’s running time is 99 minutes long, so around an hour and a half. And though that seems pretty decent for a movie, with its plot as the movie ended I felt a sense of dissatisfaction; like there should have been more.

Not all the characters feel fully developed. A lot is going on with this story and there are a lot of questions to be answered, but it would have been nice to get a deeper look at each of the characters. Some I don’t even quite remember their backstories, or if they were mentioned at all. But then again, maybe this was his direction, or he didn’t want to spend too much time on characters that wouldn’t make a huge impact.

Don’t let these two comments lead you away from giving this movie a chance, it is a great film and I’m glad I watched it. I suppose with each movie we want something more but do give this movie a go if you’re into original plots, action, and witty characters.

The recipe for Reservoir Dogs is: Black suites & ties, cigars, toothpicks, tip money, and lots and lots of bullets.

And but of course, here is our scratch-off image from the 100 movie bucket list poster!

All aboard the next film on our 100 Movie Bucket List; the 1995 mystery thriller, Se7en (directed by David Fincher). I hope you’re all strapped in and ready for a shuddering experience, this one was a wild ride!

With a young and brilliant cast consisting of Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and many other talented supporting cast members, this movie is guaranteed to throw you onto a rollercoaster of suspense, disgust, jaw-dropping, and ah-ha moments. But let’s get to those grimy details first.

Se7en is about a young detective (Brad Pitt) who moves to a new city with his high school sweetheart wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) and gets partnered up with another Detective who is retiring in just a week (Morgan Freeman). The two begin to work together, and soon discover they have fallen into the case of a serial killer. Despite their professional differences they work together to find this vicious master mind.

Later the two Detectives learn that this killer is killing people off according to the seven deadly sins: Gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy, and wrath.

The introduction of the movie and leading up to the title screen is grimly and slightly disturbing to say the least; but quite fascinating, and if you pay attention closely you’ll find some foreshadowing sprinkled in there. Immediately and uncontrollably, as the leading cast members names begin to roll, you are wrapped into this oddly vague mystery with squinting eyes from the eerie images on the screen. This film really knows how to make you shiver!

This movie is beautiful in its own extremely demented way. With its gradual and smooth transitions, unique camera angles and cut scenes, the crafted camera work is simply stunning. Each set is shudder worthy, dark, and well laid out. Along with its chilling soundtrack to really bring that full on creepy affect that makes you want to pull your legs up to your chest and watch behind your knees (or maybe that’s just me).

Se7en’s plot is impressive to the point of mind blowing exclamations at the end of the movie; it is tremendously clever, spine-chilling, and filled with truly genuine shocking moments. There was one point during the movie where I actually shouted, you’re in for an uncanny treat!
Morgan Freeman gives us a compelling and telling performance, as young Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow deliver us immediate likeable and captivating characters.

And now time for the big reveal of the movie rating, this was a tough one to decide! Movie Junkies, a drum roll please, Se7en has rightfully earned a 9/10. Though part of me was holding off just a tad due to its incredibly dark nature, I couldn’t deprive the deserving score this movie has earned with its intriguing, suspense filled, gruesome mystery. This movie’s plot leaves you wanting more, creeps right under your skin, and doesn’t disappoint.

The recipe for Se7en is: Tons of tattered notebooks, undeveloped pictures, intense acting performances, hundreds of little trees car fresheners, dark and sinister crimes, one cardboard box, and plenty of spaghetti sauce cans.

I must say that if you are a thriller seeking person and love movies that keep you at the edge of your seat or may urge you to look away, but you just can’t stop watching. Se7en is bound to give you a shocking movie experience. And see our scratch off image from the Movie Bucket List poster!

If you’re interested in getting this poster for yourself or another fellow movie lover you can find it on Amazon!

Written by Briah Krueger

Here it is movie junkies, the kick-off to our 100 Movie Bucket List adventure!

The 2006 action-drama, The Departed, (directed by Martin Scorsese) really took me by surprise. Typically, I am not an action movie person, and I’m not particularly entertained by violence; but this film really reels you in. It’s amazingly well written and cunning plot is drenched in suspense and brought to its intense life by an all-star cast; Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin (to name a few).

Before we get into it, let’s take a short dive into the movie to get a little insight: The Departed follows the lives of two men who both go into the Boston Police Academy, but for completely different reasons. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), is a spy within the Boston police for the victorious mobster Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As the other man we follow in this film, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is undercover through the Boston police to become close to Costello and help bring him and his organisation down.

From the moment the introduction of the movie ends, and the title screen appears, this compelling film takes off. You become so drawn into this world of intense violence and mystery, you honestly forget that you’re watching a movie; you’re just mesmerised. I like to call this the “Genuine Hollywood Effect”. I’ve found that earlier films have this charm and vibe that you just don’t find in most movies today. Not to say that movies made today aren’t good, of course they are; but not all of them capture that “Genuine Hollywood Effect”.

The Departed does have a lot of violent content in it, but its fighting scenes and violence are so well orchestrated. It’s not overdone to the point where you feel sick to your stomach; you actually get a tiny bit of adrenaline going, just by watching the film.

This movie received 4 Oscars, and 1 Golden Globe award, and for very good reason. Its plot has so many layers to it and always catching you by surprise. I literally experienced jaw-dropping moments, one after another. If you aren’t too keen on heavy language, you may not appreciate all the dialogue the movie has to offer. Though I myself am not big on swearing, the cast captures such a blunt and witty humour in the movie that isn’t forced and enhances the story itself. Plus, you’re listening to Boston accents the whole time, so you can turn off the swearing sensor for roughly 2 ½ hours; I promise, it’s well worth it.

Now, time for the big decisions, where does The Departed fall on the movie scale. I’ll be honest, going into the movie I thought “Yeah, this will be a pretty decent movie it has a good starring cast” but by not even the middle of the movie my mind switched to “Holy buckets, this movie is AMAZING, what was I thinking”, I was really taken back! I don’t hand these out lightly, a lot of thought goes into the final decision. The script, film score, camera angles/shots, transition scenes, acting performance, and action choreography and some of the many things taken into consideration.

With all of that said, this movie has rightfully earned its score of 10/10. This was one of the greatest movies I’ve seen in a while that truly brings all the elements of great films together, plus the movie displays fantastic foreshadowing (which I’m a sucker for) and brings the movie in a clever full-circle.

The recipe for The Departed is: Upbeat Irish music, a brilliantly talented cast, Boston accents, intense well-planned violence, fast action, hilariously blunt humour, and lots of flip phone action. If you’re looking for a crime action movie to blow you away, take a bet on The Departed, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

And but of course, here’s our scratch off square from the poster!

Whether you’ve stumbled on this article by accident or upon seeing the title your movie soaked heart never jumped so hard, I humbly welcome you to this excitedly awesome journey every film junkie should embark on: The 100 Movie Bucket List.

This list is actually in the form of a poster! This unique poster features 100 movies, from classics to Disney, for you to watch. And as a reward afterwards, you get to scratch off the movie’s box to reveal a small illustrated picture from the movie! Though it seems like a small task to scratch off the movie’s silver box, it’s actually quite satisfying and fun! Plus it’s a nice visual of your movie accomplishments!

This list is incredibly diverse, and it’s refreshing to see such a wide variety of movies being appreciated and noticed. In no way do I like to give myself the ‘movie buff’ title, I’m more of a ‘movie enthusiast’, but so far I have scratched off 32 out of 100 films. Though I have seen more of the titles on the poster than I scratched off, I haven’t seen some of the movies in such a long time I’d like to give them another in-depth watch before scratching it off the list!

Some of the titles we’ll be exploring are:

The Dark Knight
