Q&A: Seressia Glass, Author of ‘Game On’

We chat with author Seressia Glass about Game On, which is a nerd-focused, video game centered rom-com about two players on opposing teams who go from enemies to allies, allies to friends, and friends to… maybe something more.

Hi, Seressia! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! I love all things purple. I’m a dog person. I eat way too many gummy bears and watch more Asian dramas and anime than American shows

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I started writing as a child, mostly to supplement my reading habit and for extra credit in English and French classes. I even began a fantasy story about three sisters who had to protect the realm, inspired by A Wrinkle in Time. But it wasn’t until I won a “Living the Dream” essay contest for the first MLK, Jr holiday in Atlanta, that I realized how I could touch people with the words I wove together. It took another fourteen years, but I eventually realized my own dream of being an author.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

  • The first book you ever remember reading: Encyclopedia Brown
  • The one that made you want to become an author: A Wrinkle in Time
  • The one that you can’t stop thinking about: The Color Purple

Your latest novel, Game On, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Smarts, snarks, charts, and sparks

What can readers expect?

Great banter, friends and family. A slow burn romance with two people who use their smarts and their hearts to get their HEA.

Where did the inspiration for Game On come from?

From conversations about seats at the table, own voices, and problematic representation on the former bird site. I wanted Samara to take some of that on in her own way with passion and receipts.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I really enjoyed writing Aron and discovering his family through him. Samara’s epic read at the end of the book was very fun to write!

With over 25 published novels, what are some of the key lessons you have learned when it comes to writing and the publishing world?

I’ve learned that publishing is cyclical. What’s out of favor today can be the next hot thing tomorrow. I also know to not to burn bridges because an assistant editor at one house may become a senior editor at the next house. You are running a small business, don’t show you’re a** and hurt your brand. Readers have long memories!

What’s next for you?

I have a couple of different ideas for my next project, so I’m going to fiddle around with them and see which one lights my brain up!

Lastly, are there any 2024 releases that you’re looking forward to that our readers should keep an eye out for?

I’m still struggling with my 2023 reads, I haven’t even thought about 2024 yet!
