New To TV: Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing DC Universe TV Series 2019

With the DC Universe platform now available, the original content is slowly being released! The latest series is Swamp Thing, which sees the combination of horror and science come to our screens once more with Aquaman director James Wan at the helm.

The new DC series focuses on CDC researcher Abby Arcane. When she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

Andy Bean (Power) stars as scientist Alec Holland while the transformed version of his character, Swamp Thing, will be played by Derek Mears. As for Abby Arcane, she will be played by Teen Wolf‘s Crystal Reed and her character is described as “…smart and caring… her strong sense of empathy puts her at the center of a horrific life-threatening epidemic in her hometown, where she faces emotional demons from her past…” Also joining the cast is Kevin Durand as comic book villain, Jason Woodrue, or Floronic Man. His character’s official description teases: “Prickly genius Jason Woodrue is a biogeneticist without equal and he knows it. Brought in to study the unique properties of a small-town Louisiana swamp, Woodrue becomes fixated on unlocking the potential contained within — leading to tragic and monstrous consequences.

Back in April, the series was forced to cut the episodes from 13 to 10 due to creative decisions and now the 10th episode will serve as the season finale.

“I’m beyond sad,” actress Virginia Madsen, who plays Maria Sunderland on the series, wrote in a now deleted Instagram post. “What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp. And despite the rule I am going to use the hashtag. #swampthing.”

The series stars Andy Bean (Power), Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf), Derek Mears (The Flash), Kevin Durand (The Strain), Henderson Wade (Riverdale) as Matt Cable, Ian Ziering (Sharknado) as Dan Cassidy/Blue Devil, Will Patton (Shots Fired) as Avery Sunderland, Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) as Sheriff Lucilia Cable, Maria Sten (Channel Zero) as Liz Tremayne, Leonardo Nam (Westworld) as Harlan Edwards, Virginia Madsen (Designated Survivor) as Maria Sunderland, and Adrienne Barbeau, who starred in the 1982 version of Swamp Thing, in an unknown role. The series comes from James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, and Michael Clear who are executive producers, with Rob Hackett serving as co-producer and Verheiden and Dauberman also as the writers.

Swamp Thing premieres May 31st on DC Universe with new episodes weekly.
