New To TV: Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

Jack Ryan John Krasinski Amazon Prime

John Krasinski is the latest Jack Ryan in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, a new series from Amazon Prime Video that promises plenty of action.

Jack Ryan is an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. The series follows the titular character as he uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication. This launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

Following the money leads Jack and his boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce) to Mousa Bin Suleiman (Ali Suliman), the Syrian-based terrorist mastermind behind a horrific attack in Paris. With assistance from government epidemiologist Dr. Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish) and Suleiman’s wife Hanin (Dina Shihabi), Jack becomes an unexpected hero as he races to stop the extremist from unleashing an insidious assault on US soil.

The series is based on the many Tom Clancy books that follow Ryan. However, this isn’t the first time Jack Ryan has been on the screen. Previous Ryan’s have been brought to life in various adaptations and actors—Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October, Harrison Ford in Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games, Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears, and Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

The show is produced by Paramount Television, Cuse’s Genre Arts, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and David Ellison’s Skydance Television.  Executive producing along with Cuse, Roland and Krasinski are Platinum Dune’s Bay, Andrew Form (Transformers), and Brad Fuller. Additionally, Lindsey Springer, Mace Neufeld (Patriot Games), Vince Calandra, Andrew Bernstein and Skydance’s Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross will also executive produce the second season with Allyson Seeger serving as a co-executive producer.

The series stars John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) as Jack Ryan, Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as James Greer and Abbie Cornish (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) as Cathy Mueller, along with Ali Suliman (The Looming Tower), Dina Shihabi (Madam Secretary), and Amir El-Masry (Rosewater).

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be released weekly from August 31st on Amazon Prime Video with eight one-hour episodes, with season two set to premiere in 2019.
