Get ready for the battle of the brothels!
Harlots is Hulu’s new original series set in London during the 18th century and features London’s most valuable commercial activity: sex.
Based on the stories of real women, the series follows Margret Wells and her daughters as she struggles to reconcile her roles as both mother and brothel owner. Her business soon comes under attack from a rival madam, Lydia Quigley, who has a ruthless streak, so she must fight back even if it means putting her family at risk.
“It’s a show about economics as much as it is a show about sex work,” says Lesley Manville, who plays Quigley. “What the show does really well is show prostitution from every social angle.”
Told from a ‘whore’s eye view’, the creators behind the series promise the audience there won’t be any male gazes present in the show and to achieve this, only female directors were hired. The showrunners also promise there will be just as much male nudity as female which is a topic many have an opinion about.
Starring Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Samantha Morton (Fantastic Beasts) and Lesley Manville (Maleficent). All eight episodes of Harlots hits Hulu today.
