Based on Liane Moriarty’s best-selling 2014 novel, Big Little Lies will premiere today on HBO.
With a star-studded cast, the 7-episode miniseries is set in the seaside town of Monterey, California, but with small little towns, nothing ever appears to be as it seems. Filled with doting mothers, successful husbands, adorable children and beautiful homes, what lies will they tell to keep their perfect lives from unravelling.
The series will be told from the perspective of three mothers: Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and Jane (Shailene Woodley) who paint a picture of a town fuelled by rumours and lies. Conflict, secrets and betrayals are revealed which will compromise relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors.
The darkly comedic drama weaves a tale of murder and mischief as it explores society’s myth of perfection and the contradictions that exist beneath our idealized façade of marriage, sex, parenting and friendship.
The series is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club and Wild) and written for television and created by David E. Kelley (seven-time Emmy winner for Picket Fences, LA Law, The Practice and Ally McBeal). Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman also executive produced the series.
Big Little Lies stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgård and Adam Scott.
