New To Netflix: The Umbrella Academy

Umbrella Academy Netflix Series

Ready for some new and unusual superhumans? Based on the best-selling graphic novels, The Umbrella Academy is a new Netflix Original series.

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. But not everything went according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded.

Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeve’s passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya, and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

THE CHARACTERS

Number One: Luther Hargreeves / Spaceboy (Tom Hopper)
Luther has super-strength, and after an accident during an expedition to Mars, his head was transplanted onto the body of a gorilla. He was groomed by his father from an early age to be the leader of The Umbrella Academy – a responsibility that has always weighed heavily on him. He is resilient, a workaholic, and possesses the ability of heightened physical strength. Upstanding to a fault, Luther always tries to do the right thing, even if that means putting others before himself.

Number Two: Diego Hargreeves / The Kraken (David Castañeda)
He can hold his breath indefinitely and he is also an expert knife thrower. He is a skilled, intense vigilante who has a real problem with authority. He isn’t as naturally strong or smart as his siblings, so he’s worked three times as hard for everything. Believing he should have been the leader of his family instead of his brother, he carries a massive chip on his shoulder that makes him hostile to just about everyone.

Number Three: Allison Hargreeves / The Rumour (Emmy Raver-Lampman)
She is beautiful, elegant, and a formerly world-famous movie star who possesses the power of suggestion – anything she says aloud comes to pass. Her life seems perfect from the outside, but her ability has undermined every relationship she’s ever had. With her career on the decline and her marriage in shambles, she refuses to use her power as she seeks a more authentic life

Number Four: Klaus Hargreeves / The Séance (Robert Sheehan)
When barefoot, his powers include levitation, telekinesis, and to contact the dead.

Number Five: Number Five / The Boy (Aidan Gallagher)
Appears to be a thirteen year old boy, but in actuality he is a fifty-eight-year-old man trapped in the body of a child. He doesn’t suffer fools and is the smartest person in the room. He’s haunted by the things he’s seen and done, and is on the verge of losing his grip on reality

Number Six: Ben Hargreeves / The Horror
His character may be long gone, but he’ll pop up in flashbacks.

Number Seven: Vanya Hargreeves / The White Violin (Ellen Page)
She is estranged from her family due to her lack of powers, but remains a very important character.

Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige)
The pair are time-travelling assassins who have no issue with violent methods, although Hazel will eventually become at odds with Cha-Cha.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves / The Monocle (Colm Feore)
The leader of the Umbrella Academy who adopted the children and he is known to be manipulative and cold towards the children.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the popular, Eisner award-winning comics and graphic novels created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics.
