Looking for a dash of sci-fi this weekend? Netflix is here to deliver with their new original film, I Am Mother.
I Am Mother is a sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard), who is the first of a new generation of humans to be raised by Mother (Rose Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. But the pair’s unique relationship is threatened when an injured stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives with news that calls into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world and her Mother’s intentions.
In a statement from director Grant Sputore, he discussed how the film came to be. “It was conceived as a way to examine our increasingly intimate relationship with technology. In most senses, technology has made our lives better and promises to continue to do so in the future — but it’s important that we don’t sleepwalk into that future.”
“Looking toward a future where our technology threatens to outgrow us, like a child outgrowing a parent, I wondered what it might be like to be raised by a machine. I was quickly struck by the image of a hardened steel robot holding the soft flesh of a tiny baby. It seemed like a great way to explore this narrative from a fresh point of view, and not immediately paint a picture of robots as evil terminators out to destroy us, but rather a force that is inextricably linked and intertwined with humanity.”
The film stars Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby), Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids), and Clara Rugaard (Still Star-Crossed).
I Am Mother hits Netflix internationally on June 7th.
