Fresh off the box office success of Love, Simon, Netflix is all set to release their own teen romantic comedy that explores sexuality by the name of Alex Strangelove.
The new film tells the story of Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny), a well-rounded high school senior with a wonderful girlfriend Claire (Madeline Weinstein) and a bright future ahead of him – and with plans to achieve his last teenage milestone by losing his virginity. But things get complicated when he meets Elliot (Antonio Marziale), a handsome and charming gay kid from the other side of town, who unwittingly sends Alex on a rollercoaster journey of sexual identity, kicking off a hilarious and moving exploration of love, sex and friendship in our liberated and confusing modern times.
In March this year, the adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s best-selling YA novel Simon Vs. The Homo-Sapiens Agenda was released as Love, Simon. Earning almost $57.5 million USD at the box office, the film was definitely a success as a movie and also providing great representation for the LGBTQ+ community. Love, Simon was a great reprieve from other LGBTQ+ stories as they are often steeped in darker tones and while any representation in the community can be good, creating a more positive stance on it is even better. This looks like it could be the case for Alex Strangelove which exudes humour, quirkiness and all-round fun while still exploring important topics that many across the world are faced with.
Starring Daniel Doheny (Adventures In Public School), Madeline Weinstein (Beach Rats), Antonio Marziale (Altered Carbon), Daniel Zolghadri (Eighth Grade), Nik Dodani (Atypical), Ayden Mayeri (New Girl), Joanna Adler (American Crime Story: Versace), and Isabella Amara (Wilson).
Written and directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins), produced by Ben Stiller, Nicky Weinstock, and Jared Ian Goldman.
You can watch the Netflix original film internationally on Netflix.
