Our favourite kickass girl is back for a second season on Netflix with the new season premiering on International Women’s Day! Jessica Jones returns after three years since the first season, but we did have the honour of her gracing our screens last year in The Defenders.
In the second season, New York City private investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is beginning to put her life back together after murdering her tormenter, Kilgrave. Now known throughout the city as a super-powered killer, a new case makes her reluctantly confront who she really is while digging deeper into her past to explore the reasons why. . This season, Jessica will be forced to question who she really is and how she came by her powers if she’s going to survive an immediate and deadly threat. Her present is about to slam into her past as the show continues to venture into some cool, sexy, dark and morally questionable places.
Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg explains where we find Jessica at the beginning of the new season. “We get to the end of season one and Jessica is forced to kill someone,” she says. “Even though that person is her tormenter and attacker Kilgrave, she is still taking a life, so it’s this very dark victory. On one hand, she’s gotten rid of a bad guy, but on the other hand she’s become what he wanted her to become so she’s very deep in doubt about who she is.”
After the high-profile killing of Kilgrave, Jessica must also deal with her increased notoriety in New York City. She may want to continue to operate in the shadows, but she is now known as a powered person by many she encounters, on both a personal and professional level. “She’s attracting clients who want her to be a hero and her own perception of herself is that she is so not a hero,” says Rosenberg.
As for the supporting characters, Hogarth, Malcolm and Trish are all dealing with issues that have forced them to look at themselves in a new way. Trish will become more involved in Jessica’s investigations so we will see the friendship between the pair strengthen even further as the season will have a particular focus on family and ties stronger than family.
Meanwhile, Jeri Hogarth hit rock bottom at the end of Season 1, but she will be climbing back to the top since that’s the kind of person she is. But while there are some things money and power can get you, there are some things it can’t protect you from.
For Eka Darville’s Malcolm, he now aspires to become a private investigator like Jessica and we saw their friendship develop a little in The Defenders. At the start of the season, he’s essentially running the show at Alias Investigations whether it be attending to potential clients or picking Jessica’s ass up off the floor after a night of drinking.
Joining the new season is Golden Globe and Tony Award winner, Academy Award and Emmy nominee Janet McTeer who will be playing a multi-faceted character. The details of McTeer’s character have been kept tightly under wraps other than that she plays a mysterious woman who holds crucial insights into Jessica’s past and others like her
Another new character who makes a substantial impact on Jessica’s emotional journey this season is a man named Oscar Arocho, played by J.R. Ramirez. Oscar is a talented artist and a doting father to a young son called Vido. He is a normal, down-to-earth guy with a lot of heart and vulnerability and he moves into Jessica’s building as the super.
Finally, there was the return of season one’s charismatic villain, Kilgrave. Melissa Rosenberg was thrilled to have the opportunity to write for this character again. “The beauty of the Marvel world is never say die,” she says. “David brings so many levels to everything he does and every take is different. It’s just delicious watching him in this role.”
Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) is joined by an incredible returning cast that includes Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse) and new cast members including Janet McTeer (Me Before You), J.R. Ramirez (Power), and Terry Chen (Continuum).
Marvel’s Jessica Jones is executive produced by series Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight, Dexter), Raelle Tucker (True Blood), Jim Chory (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Luke Cage, Marvel’s Iron Fist) and Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Luke Cage, Marvel’s Iron Fist) who also serves as Marvel’s Head of Television.
