“It is wonderful to see you,” Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) says to her. “Yes, it is, isn’t it?” Blunt’s Mary Poppins says.
It’s been a while since we last talked about Mary Poppins Returns and we’ve been craving some more news! Thankfully due to the 2018 Oscars, we have been graced with a teaser trailer for the upcoming film.
Set in 1935, the film will see Mary Poppins revisit the now grown-up Michael and Jane Banks, along with Michael’s three children, after they experience a family tragedy. Alongside Mary, her friend Jack (played by Lin-Manuel Miranda) will join her and the children as they embark on a new magical journey.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Rob Marshall spoke about the film.
“The bar is so high for this, but to be able to walk in the footsteps of this beautiful story about a woman who brings magic to this family that’s looking for wonder and hope and joy in their lives…I feel a great responsibility and reverence every day. We all feel it. We’re just lifting it up to get there with the right intentions behind it.”
Dick Van Dyke will also be joining the cast who played both chimney sweeper Bert and Mr Dawes Snr in the original film and will now be playing Mr. Dawes Jr. But the talented cast doesn’t stop there. Meryl Streep will be playing Mary Poppins cousin Topsy, Julie Walters as Ellen the housekeeper, Angela Lansbury as a balloon seller, and Colin Firth as William Wetherall Wilkins.
Mary Poppins Returns stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth, with the film scheduled to be released at Christmas time this year.
