Syfy has released the first trailer for their upcoming series Krypton, which will follow Superman’s grandfather.
The first sneak peek of Krypton debuted at San Diego Comic Con last year and this new trailer features more scenes and information that we have been waiting for. We know that the series is set 200 years prior to the birth of Superman and it will follow Seg-El, Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honour and save his beloved world from chaos.
The new trailer throws in an interesting tidbit with the inclusion of Adam Strange. This character is a time traveller who is from the DC comics world and may be familiar to fans as the jetpack-wearing space adventurer. Although we can’t spy his jetpack, he does have a crucial message for Seg-El—you need to save Krypton as your future grandson will be saving planet Earth. However, this can’t happen if Krypton is destroyed or Seg-El dies, so one could imagine that would put just a little bit of pressure on the guy.
With time travel playing such a big role, could Superman very well make an appearance? “The door is open,” executive producer David Goyer says.
This series definitely has its potential, especially since it isn’t entirely focusing on the bigger heroes of DC, but rather a family member of one of them instead. That being said, pilot episodes and the first seasons aren’t always the best as they’re trying to establish their version of the world and characters. Plus let’s be honest, sci-fi series often don’t receive the funds for special effects that they deserve.
At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the producers already have a seven to eight year plan for where the series could go and that doesn’t necessarily follow Kryptonian lore. “The time travel element does give us some unpredictability and some creative license to do some stories you don’t know or stories that play out differently than what people might assume,” said DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns.
While this is a DC television series, it isn’t tied to the DCTV universe that includes The Flash and Gotham, so Krypton will more than likely explore their own versions of characters. With the Phantom Zone being teased towards the end of the new trailer, it seems the series will have plenty of characters, planets and times to visit, which will offer up a very intriguing show ahead.
Krypton stars Cameron Cuffe (The Halycon), Georgina Campbell (King Arthur: Legend of The Sword), Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones), Elliot Cowan (Da Vinci’s Demons) and Ann Ogbomo (Wonder Woman).
Based on DC characters, Krypton is executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy). Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as executive producer and showrunner.
The new series premieres on March 21st on Syfy.
