Q&A: Gabriella Lepore, Author of ‘Watch Us Crack’

We chat with author Gabriella Lepore about Watch Us Crack, which follows two teens from rival schools who are each accused of a brutal murder and must identify the real culprit—even if it means destroying their budding romance.

Hi, Gabriella! Welcome back! It’s been about four years since we last spoke for the release of This Is Why We Lie. How have you been and what have you been up to?

Hi, thanks so much for having me back! I’ve been doing really well—busy writing more YA thrillers since This Is Why We Lie. After The Last One to Fall and Bad Like Us, I’m pleased to now be celebrating the release of Watch Us Crack. It’s been an exciting few years!

Your latest novel, Watch Us Crack, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Tense, twisty, deceptive, ruthless, and raw.

What can readers expect?

Readers can expect fierce hockey rivalry, a Romeo & Juliet inspired romance, plenty of twists and turns, and of course a few lies along the way!

Where did the inspiration for Watch Us Crack come from?

The hockey rivalry and the train linking two small towns sparked the story for me. I loved weaving in the tension of competing schools, the dynamic of old friends reconnecting, and the added layers of true crime TikToks—giving readers the chance to piece together the mystery alongside the characters.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

Cason was one of my favorite characters. His history and grief made him so layered and complex, and exploring that made him incredibly interesting to write.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

Because the book is set in Western New York and so rooted in ice hockey, I had to immerse myself in the sport and local culture. I spoke with people from the area to make sure my interpretation felt authentic.

What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned since your debut?

To keep growing and always be open to shifting and taking advice. To learn from feedback and trust the vision!

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on a few new projects. I’m excited to explore different genres alongside working on a new YA thriller!

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed reading this year? Are there any you’re looking forward to picking up?

I recently read How to Survive a Slasher by Justine Pucella Winans and enjoyed the horror trope. I also finally picked up Lockwood & Co, which had me completely hooked with the sharp characters and fun mystery—loved it! And I can’t wait to dive into Friends and Liars by Kit Frick later this year.
