Q&A: Devney Perry, Author of ‘Bluebird Gold’

We chat with author Devney Perry about Bluebird Gold, which is a gripping romance set in 1983 where a woman’s search for the truth about her father’s death entangles her with the small-town sheriff and a legend of lost Montana gold.

Hi, Devney! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I was born and raised in Montana, and while Washington is where I currently live, Montana will always be home. I’ve written over fifty books and being an author is my absolute dream job. My husband and I have two boys, and when I’m not writing, you can usually find me in the bleachers of some sporting event.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I’ve always loved reading. My mom is an avid reader and she definitely gave me the bookish gene. I didn’t discover my love for writing until I was in my thirties, but it all stems from how much I love to read. Writing feels like that thing I was always meant to do, I was just waiting for the right time.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

  • The first book you ever remember reading: The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
  • The one that made you want to become an author: Dark Paradise by Tami Hoag
  • The one that you can’t stop thinking about: The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah

Your latest novel, Bluebird Gold, is out December 30th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Nostalgic, mysterious, cozy, romantic, emotional

What can readers expect?

Bluebird Gold is a story about a woman searching for the truth about her father’s death, and along the way she reconnects with her past, becomes entangled with the small town sheriff and stumbles upon a lost gold legend. It has elements of suspense that will keep readers guessing. And of course, there’s romance. It’s filled with plenty of tension, banter, heat and swoony moments.

Where did the inspiration for Bluebird Gold come from?

My dad has always loved Montana history, and he’s told me countless stories over the years. The legend in Bluebird Gold is loosely based on one of my dad’s old stories. It’s far from historically accurate, but beneath my embelishments and creative liberties, there are a few golden nuggets of truth and history.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I loved both of the protagonists. The won me over from the very beginning. And I love writing this book in the 1980s. That gave this entire story a nostalgic vibe and that little bit of uniqueness I’ve been craving.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

Honestly, this book just poured out of me. It was one of those that was easy, start to finish.

What’s next for you?

I’m looking forward to heading back to fictional small town Montana to write the next book in this series! There are more love stories to tell and more mysteries to solve in Dalton.

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed this year? Are there any you are looking forward to picking up in 2026?

I loved Empire of the Dawn by Jay Kristoff. I read my first Freida McFadden book, The Housemaid, and I’m so excited for the movie. The Winter King by C.L. Wilson was excellent. I’m such a mood reader I am not sure what I’ll pick up in 2026, but one of my goals is to read some of the books that have been stockpiled on my Kindle for ages.
