New To TV: Deception

ABC has a new trick up its sleeve with their new series which sees a magician join forces with the FBI.

When his career is ruined by scandal, superstar magician Cameron Black has only one place to turn to practice his art of deception, influence and illusion — the FBI. Using every trick in the book and inventing new ones, he will help the government catch the world’s most elusive criminals while staging the biggest illusions of his career.

Judging by the trailer, the series takes on the approach of past TV crime dramas such as Castle and The Mentalist where the all-too-fun and unqualified in crime male joins forces with a tough and serious female agent. Despite the fact many are over these cookie cutter dramas, they do end up getting watched to pass the time.

Deception does have potential as long as the quips, characters and plot don’t become overplayed, and more than likely, the two main characters will end up together. However, if they don’t and remain purely platonic, that will certainly be something we haven’t seen.

The series comes from Chris Fedak, who has written and executive produced for series such as Chuck, where a normal guy turned super computer teams up with the CIA and NSA, and Forever, where a 200-year-old doctor tries to find out about his immortality whilst working with the local police to solve crimes. So essentially, Fedak has significant experience in crime dramas and both series he has worked on were quite entertaining (especially Chuck). However, lets hope the series breaks the confines of its predecessors and then also doesn’t get cancelled in the first season.

The series is from writer/executive producer Chris Fedak (Chuck) and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Martin Gero and Sarah Schechter. Illusionist David Kwong (Now You See Me) will co-produce. The series is from Berlanti Productions and Quinn’s House in association with Warner Bros. Television. Deception is directed by David Nutter, who is also executive producer.

The series stars Jack Cutmore-Scott (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Ilfenesh Hadera (Baywatch 2018), Lenora Crichlow (Being Human), Amaury Nolasco (Prison Break), Justin Chon (Twilight), Laila Robins (Homeland) and Vinnie Jones (Arrow).

Deception premieres March 11th (US) at 10pm EDT on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand.
