“I’m so excited to introduce readers to my second novel, HEARTBREAKERS AND FAKERS.
This book is extremely personal to me in that it reveals a bit of the worst parts of who I used to be. I spent so much of my energy in high school trying to get people to like me–pretending to be the person I thought they wanted me to be instead of figuring out who I really was. Penny isn’t very likeable at the start of this story. She makes stupid mistakes, is selfish and reckless and so caught up in presenting the “right” version of herself to the world that she loses herself in the process.
There’s so much pressure on teenage girls to be perfect role models, and this carries over into literature. We expect our female YA protagonists to be sweet, relatably awkward, and likable–the “not like other girls” foil to the “mean popular girl” character. But I didn’t always make the best decisions at seventeen. I let my insecurities direct me and sometimes I hurt people’s feelings. I made mistakes. I had complicated friendships with other girls that in the moment felt like they’d last forever and then burned out in a single summer; girls I tried so hard to impress who didn’t actually know anything about me because I was too scared to show them.
HEARTBREAKERS AND FAKERS is an exploration of these shallow relationships. It’s about learning from your mistakes, growing up, and becoming a better person. But it’s also a love story. I had so much fun getting to put my own spin on the fake-dating and hate-to-love tropes! I am such a sucker for the tension that comes from characters having to fake their feelings. I love putting my characters into the meanest best awkward situations (did someone say there’s only one bed??). Penny and Kai aren’t perfect people…but they just might be perfect for each other. I can’t wait for you to meet them.”
