Things take a dark turn this episode when Sabrina learns they must feast upon the flesh of a witch to keep with a longheld tradition. However, this doesn’t sit well with Sabrina and so she begins digging to figure out a way to put an end to it. We also learn more about Roz, Susie, and Harvey’s family history thanks to a task given by Ms Wardwell.
During the previous episode, Sabrina performed an exorcism on Susie’s uncle to rid him of the demon Apophis as Susie, Roz, and Harvey were being haunted by him and they would be next to be possessed.
An Invitation
Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) discovers some lamb intestines pinned to their front door, which means they have been selected to participate in the year’s Feast of Feasts. The tradition is meant to honour Sister Freya who gave her life so the original Greendale coven could survive during the winter. One member from each family is offered as tribute and then someone is made Queen, which means they also offer their life and their flesh.
At Baxter High, Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) is teaching a class and speaking of family histories and pushes for the students to dig into their family, and directs this mostly at Harvey (Ross Lynch). Afterwards, Sabrina asks Wardwell about the Feast and if there is a way to get out of it. That night, Harvey asks his grandfather about his family, and their family weren’t always in mining. When they were known as Von Kunkles, they were hunters, and specifically targeted ‘those’ people tunnelling in the hills. Their family got rid of those people and took the land for themselves.
Susie (Lachlan Watson) then looks into her history with her father and she’s intrigued by her ancestor Dorothea who dressed like a man because it was safer that way back then. Meanwhile, Roz (Jaz Sinclair) speaks with her Nana, who begins talking about the cunning as apparently the women in their family can see things that others remain blind to. According to her Nana, it should be happening to Roz around the age she is now. Later on, Susie and Roz visit Roz’s nana again who says the witches cursed the Walker women with blindness.
All Hail The Queen
Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) has been selected for the Feast while Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) tells Sabrina that her father banned the Feasts when he was High Priest, but Blackwood (Richard Coyle) started them again after a ‘calling’.
The witches draw their paper when Sabrina barges in and offers herself instead, unless Zelda (Miranda Otto) wants to admit the tradition is barbaric. Sabrina takes her place and when they burn their paper, Prudence’s burns white and shows she is selected as Queen. After a stern lecture from Zelda, it appears Sabrina’s smoking red paper means she is the handmaiden and she has to tend to Prudence’s every desire.
Prudence moves in and Sabrina has to give her a milk bath, and afterwards it seems the Sisters, Nick, and Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) are all getting it on together. The next day, Sabrina drags Prudence to Baxter High so she can seduce and torment some mortal boys. Sabrina introduces Prudence to her friends and Prudence knows of Susie’s ancestor Dorothea, who was a ‘true ally’ to the witches. Meanwhile, Harvey speaks of his family history, which leads to an angry Prudence. The pair then talk to Wardwell, who says there is a witch who rejected the crown and perhaps they could speak to her.
Into The Woods
Wardwell, Sabrina, and the Sisters head to the forest in search of Dezmelda. She speaks of her own Feast experience at a younger age than them and apparently the High Priest was meant to ‘initiate’ her.
Meanwhile, the Kinkle family head out to hunt…in the very direction Sabrina and the others are when they hear a gunshot. Harvey was asked to take the shot since it was his first hunt and he kills a familiar in the shape of a deer. The witches cloak themselves and Sabrina won’t accept that Harvey is a killer. Sabrina arrives home to find Harvey there and he’s upset, however, he couldn’t take the shot.
Lady Blackwood (Alvina August) is distressed over cramping and spotting, and it seems it’s all over the Sisters conspiring against her and so she cast a spell to make Prudence the Queen. Sabrina believes perhaps Prudence could be Blackwood’s daughter, which is why Lady Blackwood sees her as a threat.
The Feast
The Sisters and Blackwood’s gather at Sabrina’s for the Feast and Sabrina serves Hilda’s special cake for dessert, and it seems now the truth comes out. Lady Blackwood confirms she enchanted the box and that Prudence is Blackwood’s daughter. When the coven gathers, Father Blackwood says Prudence cannot fulfil her duty and that Dark Lord has said there will be no Feast, however, a woman gets up and slits her throat. The witches begin stabbing her and taking their fill of her. At the end of the episode, Dorcas (Abigail Cowen) and Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) hold voodoo dolls, which resemble Harvey and Tommy and they smash them with rocks.
Overall Thoughts?
Well, we all knew that this Sabrina series was going to be dark, but cannibalism? We were just as surprised as Sabrina. However, surely Sabrina would have known about the Feast earlier on? Regardless, the episode clearly showed how dedicated these witches are to their Dark Lord, and are very firm believers, such as Prudence for example.
Given that “long pig” is mentioned in the first episode, this bit of cannibalism shouldn’t be a surprise.
